Disability Arts Cymru’s (DAC) very popular Annual Visual Art Exhibition

mixed media work by artists from across Wales. This year’s Exhibition
commemorates, and celebrates, the life and work of disabled artist Mark
Anthony Annis who sadly died earlier this year. DAC had worked with Mark
for many years, and Mark had requested that the Exhibition be in his memory.
DAC was established in 1982 with the aim of creating full equality in the arts
for Disabled and Deaf people in Wales. It works all over Wales, and across all
art forms, with any disabled artist who needs support and advice.

am lawer o flynyddoedd, ac roedd Mark wedi gofyn i’r Arddangosfa fod er cof
amdano. Sefydlwyd Celfyddydau Anabledd Cymru yn 1982 gyda’r nod i greu
cydraddoldeb llawn yn y celfyddydau i bobl anabl a byddar yng Nghymru. Gan

Iolanta / Duke Bluebeard’s Castle
(Tchaikovsky) (Bartók)
On the heels of her triumphant Met performances in Eugene Onegin, soprano Anna Netrebko takes
on another Tchaikovsky heroine in the first opera of this intriguing double bill, consisting of an
enchanting fairy tale (Iolanta) followed by an erotic psychological thriller (Duke Bluebeard’s Castle).
Netrebko stars as the beautiful blind girl who experiences love for the first time in Iolanta, while
Nadja Michael is the unwitting victim of the diabolical Bluebeard, played by Mikhail Petrenko. Both
operas are directed by Mariusz Trelinski, who was inspired by classic noir films of the 1940s. Iolanta
also stars Piotr Beczala, and Valery Gergiev conducts both operas.

Der Fliegende Hollander
(Wagner opera)
Wagner’s first masterpiece explores the themes
of damnation and redemption that would
fascinate the composer throughout his career.
In this tale of a captain forced to sail the seas
for eternity unless released by the faithful love
of a good woman, and the lonely girl who longs
to save him, Wagner created two unforgettable
characters operating near the limits of human
emotion. Tim Albery’s atmospheric 2009
modern-dress staging provides an ideal
platform on which Bryn Terfel’s turbulent
Dutchman, and Adrianne Pieczonka’s visionary
Senta will explore their passions and struggle to
find salvation in a hostile world. Admired for
his Wagner interpretations with the CBSO and
at Bayreuth, Andris Nelsons returns to steer the
orchestra through Wagner’s stormy score.

ENO Live:
La Traviata (Verdi)
La Traviata tells the moving story of how the beautiful, but fragile courtesan
Violetta, is coerced into sacrificing her one hope of personal happiness for the
sake of her lover’s reputation.
A tragic and resonant tale of society and morality, Verdi’s masterpiece combines
compelling characters with hugely powerful, moving and instantly recognisable
melodies, making it one of the most emotionally engaging and popular operas of
all time. Peter Konwitschny’s celebrated production of La Traviata returns to ENO,
cutting to the very heart of the opera’s themes of passionate love and tragic death
with a modern and uncluttered staging, and a running time of less than two hours.
Making her UK debut as Violetta is soprano Elizabeth Zharoff, who stars alongside
ENO Harewood Artist Ben Johnson as Alfredo and acclaimed baritone Anthony
Michaels-Moore as Alfredo’s father, Giorgio Germont.

Meera Syal (The Kumars, Goodness Gracious
Me, Rafta Rafta at the National) returns to
the National Theatre, directed by Rufus Norris
(Broken, London Road).
Pulizter Prize-winner Katherine Boo spent
three years in Annawadi recording the lives
of its residents. From her uncompromising
book, winner of the National Book Award for
Non-Fiction 2012, David Hare has fashioned a
tumultuous play on an epic scale.
India is surging with global ambition. But beyond the luxury hotels surrounding Mumbai airport lies
a makeshift slum, full of people with plans of their own. Zehrunisa and her son Abdul aim to recycle
enough rubbish to fund a proper house. Sunil, twelve and stunted, wants to eat until he’s as tall as
Kalu the thief. Asha seeks to steal government anti-poverty funds to turn herself into a ‘first-class
person’, while her daughter Manju intends to become the slum’s first female graduate.
But their schemes are fragile; global recession threatens the garbage trade, and another slum-dweller
is about to make an accusation that will destroy herself and shatter the neighbourhood.

ROH Live:
Swan Lake
(Petipa ballet)
Swan Lake, surely the greatest of all Romantic ballets, is
the captivating story of a beautiful woman transformed into
a swan, and a heart-rending tribute to the power of love.
Swan Lake is a perfect synthesis of choreography and music and, though Tchaikovsky did not live to see it become
a success, his first ballet score is now synonymous with ballet itself, inspiring generations of dancers and crossing
over into popular culture.
From the earliest days of the Vic-Wells Ballet, Swan Lake has been one of The Royal Ballet’s signature works. In
creating this production, Anthony Dowell aimed to return to an authentic version of the choreography created by
the great Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov for the Mariinsky Theatre in 1895. Yolanda Sonnabend’s designs draw on
the Russian Imperial Court of that period with an inspired blend of historical accuracy and gothic fantasy. The court
scenes of Acts I and III have a dark glamour rooted in the opulent style of Carl Fabergé, while the famous lakeside
‘white’ acts are rich with mist, shadow and moonlight.

Nursing Lives
Thursday 19 March – Iau 19 Mawrth
A heart-warming wartime tale of bravery and love from the UK’s leading full mask theatre company
When Flo, a feisty seventy-something, learns that the hospital she trained at during the Second World
War is being demolished, she decides to take one last look – and stop the bulldozers in their tracks.
Her illicit visit becomes a personal celebration of friendship, courage, adventure and romance. But is
what Flo remembers really the truth, or is history ready to be re-written?
Nursing Lives is a love story set in the early 1980s of Thatcher’s Britain, and takes us back to the
hard-working, heart-breaking, swing-dancing world of the UK’s wartime hospitals.
Like all Vamos Theatre shows, Nursing Lives is wordless, telling its story through physical
communication, a strong visual design and an original soundtrack. This is a humorous and poignant
production from one of the best of the UK’s full mask theatre companies
