Apokoronas 2012 What’s going on in the area? This page is to let you all know what is going on in Apokoronas. It will expand as we get more information in - so send us details of your leisure activities. This is not the place for one off events or advertising cafeterias or restaurants etc unless they have regular events. we are concentrating on what is happening in Apokoronas though there may be the occasional mention of Hania, Rethymnon etc. Whats included ? Clubs, groups, meetings, classes. It does not matter if the groups are amateur or professional. The events page will remain as usual and this one will be updated as we have more information. The “Arts” Lessons and Classes Social Clubs Out and About Churches Charitable Groups Venues with regular events ! 2 Kalamitsi Arts Group Kalamitsi Arts Group (KAG) exists to provide and promote creative events in western Crete. Run by Phil and Francesca Harrison, the organisation each year presents Vamos Arts Week, an Autumn Festival, concerts, exhibitions, open studios, workshops, film nights, talks, poetry & prose readings, world cuisine and live music evenings, gourmet nights, quizzes and a Christmas Fair. You can also become a ‘Friend’ of KAG (details on website page) to support their operation and enjoy extra privileges. Toneel Drama Group Our aim is to provide entertainment to our audiences and give our members the chance to have fun, experience working in the theatre and learn new skills in a safe, supportive environment. We also hold acting workshops. Very few members have any previous experience in drama before coming to Crete. We welcome anyone who wants to join the group to be involved in any way – not just in acting but also in building sets, supporting productions either technically or more generally in front of house roles etc We also look to work with other groups in the Apokoronas area of Crete to promote arts and culture in the area for the benefit of all citizens.We are a members club. Members elect a small management team each year to manage the everyday activities of the group. www.toneeldramagroup.org Open Mike Night - Vamos These take place every other Tuesday and has proved very popular. [APG] The Apokoronas Photographic Group was formed in May 2009 by a group of photography enthusiasts of different nationalities living in the Apokoronas area. Members come with a wide range of photographic experiences, skills and interests The main objectives of the group are - to develop individual photographic practice and creativity -to share and exchange knowledge and technical skills These are facilitated by -the setting of a themed Monthly Photographic Challenge -review and discussion of the photographs produced -demonstrations of various digital editing programmes and techniques -bi-annual outings for a specific photographic assignment -an annual exhibition -The group meet in Kefalas 10.00 -12.00 on the last Tuesday of every month. Single days or whole holidays. http://cretancreative.com/ Gardening - ! 6 Churches St Thomas The Anglican Church of St. Thomas is situated in the village of Kefalas, which is 30 minutes east of Chania in the Apokoronas region of Crete. The nearest town is Vamos, 4 miles west of Kefalas. The Church is a left turn off the Vamos to Kefalas road, as you approach the village of Kefalas and there is a car park adjacent to the Church. We have a service of Holy Communion in English every Sunday at 11am. We welcome people of any (or no specific) church denomination or background. The service lasts around one hour with hymns, bible readings, prayers and a talk/address. This is followed at 12.30pm by our Church Children's Club for English speaking children aged up to 8,( but older children are welcome).which meets for half an hour with games, craft activities, bible stories and singing. You are welcome to both the11am service and/or the Children's Club. You are welcome at the Children's Club if you do not wish to attend the 11am service. Orthodox church Holy Metropolis of Kydonia and Apokoronas http://www.ec-patr.org/dioceses.php?lang=gr&id=73 Catholic Cathedral Chania The Catholic cathedral in Chania is No. 46 Halidon Street which is on the left, going down towards the harbour. It is right opposite the large Greek Orthodox cathedral. Winter Mass time: Monday to Saturday 6.0pm Summer Mass time for the same days is 7.0pm. (the times change when the clocks change) There is an English language Mass on Saturday evenings Sunday Holy Mass 10.0am throughout the year. All Cretans, tourists and other visitors are welcome to join for a Sunday service.
