OUR
MISSION
is to provide students with a Catholic
education rooted in the life of Christ and
to foster the pursuit of excellence in the
whole person.
Dear Friends of Bishop O’Connell High School,
In so many ways, Bishop O’Connell gives
proud testimony to the African proverb,
“It takes a village to raise a child.” Earlier
this month I had the pleasure of opening six
envelopes that had been left on my desk.
Each contained a gift to our Annual Fund.
Each came from a member of the Sisters,
Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary
who serve at our school.
Over my five-year tenure here, I have been
consistently impressed by the engagement
of our village of workers, believers and
supporters, bound together by a single
purpose. Within the building, many of
our 150 faculty and staff members volunteer
to serve on academic, disciplinary
accreditation, personnel and policy
committees and, like our sisters, donate
their personal financial resources to school
fundraising activities. Outside our walls, an
army of parents serves on the PTO, arts and
athletic booster organizations, the All-Night
Grad Party, and on the gala and golf
committees. They and a good number of
our alumni, past-parents and friends also
generously contribute their talents and
their treasures by serving on our Board of
Governors and its committees, and by
investing in the creation of opportunities
that benefit our students.
Recently, our village has used its financial
resources for its children to help purchase
computers and LCD projectors, crew shells
and trombones, microscopes and softballs.
Our village has helped to renovate our gym,
our chapel, our training room, weight room
and bathrooms. And it has contributed
generously to provide the extra resources
needed to attract, train and retain quality
teachers in a competitive market. Our village
has watched over and supported its children
by attending their games and concerts, by
providing them help with their homework, and
by listening, healing and encouraging them
after every fall, wrong turn and bump in the
road. And our village has prayed unceasingly
for its children, placing them always into the
loving care and gentle protection of Jesus and
his mother, Mary.
A senior girl came to my door recently and
said, “Mr. Breen, I love this place.” I was
pleased, but not surprised. Of course she
loves this place. This is our village. This is our
holy ground. This is DJO. So, on her behalf, I
thank you for being there for her and for
supporting her on her journey. I am proud of
the achievements of our students. I am proud
of our community and its commitment to
support them as they grow in learning and in
faith. And, like you, I am proud to be a small
part of what has been, what is now and what
will be in the years to come.

ACADEMICS
As a college preparatory high school, we continue to evaluate our
academic program with our students’ future goals in mind. Nearly
100 percent of Bishop O’Connell graduates matriculate into a
four-year university, so it is imperative that we provide them with the
background and skills necessary for success. The 2008-2009 academic
year saw a few additions to the course offerings at Bishop O’Connell
High School which included: Sports Entertainment and Marketing,
Musical Theatre and The History of Warfare.
Addressing the need for study skills for our students has
been both a concern and a priority for the past year and a
half. After much planning, we were able to provide a Study
Skills course taught by a team of O’Connell teachers to our
entering ninth grade students as they began their high
school education last August. Freshmen learned to hone
their note-taking and test-taking skills, as well as work on
reading and time-management skills. Use of the acquired
skills was the expected norm in their classes during this past
year and beyond. Because of the success of the program, we
will continue it for the class of 2013.
As the academic overseer, it is my pleasure to honor the
many achievements of our students during this past school
year. One of our graduates, Brendan Neyland, was a National
Merit Finalist and 21 of this year’s graduating class were
National Merit Commended Students. On Awards Night we
honored 20 graduating seniors who had earned the
distinction of AP Scholar and one student who was lauded as
an AP Scholar with Honor, based on performances in the AP
testing of their sophomore and junior years. This year, 411
students sat for 856 AP examinations in 24 subject areas.
Throughout the year, many of our students gained
recognition for outstanding academic performance including
39 awards in the National Latin Exam and four students who
achieved national ranking in Le Grand Concours – a national
French exam. Thousands of dollars in prize money were
awarded to O’Connell students for their outstanding
performance in speech and essay contests. We are especially
proud of four of our students who earned places in national
competitions to be held in various cities in the country over
the summer months.
Our science department had great reason to celebrate this
year with their exceptional achievements in the regional and
state science fairs. Several students will continue with their
research for presentation later this year.
This will be my last communication with the O’Connell
community as I prepare to begin a new path in my life at
Immaculata University. I take with me many wonderful
memories and relationships from my nine years at
O’Connell and a heartfelt thanks to all who have
enhanced these years that seemed to have flown by.

SPIRITUALITY
Each year, we work together to develop and nurture the seed of faith
in the hearts of our students. It is not easy to measure the success of
our labors. The workings of the Holy Spirit cannot ever be calculated,
summarized, and reported. Nonetheless, we put forth our prayerful
best efforts in the certain knowledge that God will make good come
even from our weaknesses.
This year, the Chaplain’s office had two major initiatives.
First, we totally revamped the retreat experience for all
four grades. Second, we created a new “coffee shop”
for students to create a sense of welcome, and to
provide a setting for discussion. Our retreats for seniors
were 24 hour events—the first overnight retreats at
O’Connell in nearly 20 years. The theme for the seniors
was “Who are you, and where are you going?”
Providing time for prayer, discussion, Mass, confession,
and relaxation, the retreats brought faculty and students
together to help prepare our seniors for the spiritual
challenges they will face in college. Our underclass
retreats were held on three separate days, once for each
class. The theme for the retreats was Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 –
“There is an appointed time for everything under
heaven.” Students had the opportunity to discuss the
challenges facing them at each grade level, to listen to
upperclass speakers share their experiences of struggle
and growth over the years, and to celebrate the
sacraments. These retreats gave every student in our

school a chance to call “time out” from their ordinary
stresses and pressures to focus for a moment on what
God is asking of them, and to think about where He
wishes to lead them.
As always, the Chaplain’s office offers its regular
activities: providing confession and adoration of the
Blessed Sacrament two days each week; offering Mass
each day and approximately each month for the entire
school; leading the students to Washington D.C. in
January for the annual March for Life; preparing new
converts for reception of the sacraments; welcoming
pastors from around the Diocese for Mass and lunch
with their students; inviting guest speakers to address
the students on a variety of spiritual and moral issues;
and striving to provide a continuous “ministry of
presence” to remind students of God’s abiding
presence in their lives, at all times.

ATHLETICS
For both spectators and participants, 2008-2009 was an exciting year
for O’Connell sports. Here are just a few of the highlights.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY secured back-to-back
championships in the WCAC, Virginia Independent
Schools meet and the Arlington County Championship –
a tremendous accomplishment, indeed.
*
VARSITY FOOTBALL had a winning season
against some formidable opponents, starting out
strong and finishing 6-4 and tied for fourth in the
WCAC. According to Head Coach Steve Trimble,
“we enjoyed a successful season and look forward to
what next year brings.”
GIRLS VARSITY SOCCER, a perennial powerhouse
in the Washington metro area, had another standout
season, before falling to St. John’s 2-1 in the WCAC
championship game. They ended the season with a
13-4-3 record.
BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL provided another
wonderful cage campaign. Under Head Coach Joe
Wootten, the Knights posted a 22-11 mark against
some of the country’s top competition.
BOYS VARSITY SOCCER was one of this year’s
most pleasant surprises, as this team advanced to the
WCAC championship game before losing a 1-0
heartbreaker to Gonzaga. Earlier in the playoffs, the
Knights topped favored DeMatha in overtime, wining
5-4 in the penalty-kick tie-breaker.
GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL continued to make
strong strides, as they rolled to a winning record of 1715. By the end of the season Jimmy Brown’s team of
veteran players were ranked at the top of the state,
but fell short in the state playoffs.
BOYS AND GIRLS SWIMMING once again had
record-breaking seasons, with the girls finishing third
at Catholic Nationals. Coach Evan Stiles had nothing
but accolades for his contingent of solid competitors
this year.
GIRLS VARSITY TENNIS proved to be another fine
showing by racquet girls who sported an 11-6 record
overall and placed fifth in the WCAC tournament.
VARSITY VOLLEYBALL showed extreme dedication
and determination as Coach Mike Barnett’s girls posted
a winning record, going 12-10 overall.

VARSITY WRESTLING produced a banner season.
DeMatha’s 23-year reign as WCAC champions came to
end this year, as the Knights took over the top spot in
rare form. This year’s wrestling team also became the
first team in O’Connell history to place in the top 10 at
the National Prep Tournament. After 29 years as coach
of this team, Bill Carpenter announced his retirement
at the end of the season.
VARSITY ICE HOCKEY created quite a buzz
around school this year. Playing in just their second
season in the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey
League (Virginia’s only high school hockey league),
the Knights garnered top honors, winning the
NVSHL championship (also known as the Capital
Cup) with a pair of overtime victories – first against
perennial powerhouse Stonebridge (4-3) in a semifinal game, and then against Forest Park (6-5) in the
final game. This talent-laden contingent drew
standing-room-only crowds to both their home and
away games all season long.

VARSITY SOFTBALL continued its tradition of
excellence, finishing out the season with a 23-4 record.
Considered the metropolitan area’s premier softball
program, the Knights reigned supreme once again
when May rolled around – winning their sixth
consecutive WCAC championship and seventh
straight Virginia Independent Schools title.
GIRLS VARSITY LACROSSE, under first-year Coach
Meghan Thompson, finished with a winning season (10-9)
behind some outstanding senior leadership.
BOYS AND GIRLS TRACK raced ahead of the
pack this season. The boys finished fifth at the State
Independent Schools track meet, while the girls
claimed top honors at both the state championship
and the Arlington County Championships.

PERFORMING
ARTS
The music and drama departments at Bishop O’Connell continued to
shine in 2008-2009. Talented ensembles of actors, singers and musicians
under the direction of Elizabeth Milam staged three large-scale
productions: Shakespeare’s classic A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the
fall, the musical Little Mary Sunshine in the spring and a special pre-Lent
musical production of Godspell in February. Audiences were delighted
by all the shows, and the performers have raised the bar for future
O’Connell productions.
The music ensembles at O’Connell also garnered additional
accolades this year. The growing pep band brought
excitement to pep rallies and football, basketball and
hockey games. The orchestra and band continued to grow
in numbers and in sophistication, performing an original
work this year by music program director Todd Mastric. The
vocal groups performed at a variety of venues around the
area this year, including singing an a cappella version of our

National Anthem. The O’Connell Singers, under the
direction of Michael Weinberg, were rewarded at this year’s
district choral festival with the highest rating possible and
rave reviews for their performance of Franz Schubert’s Psalm
23 (in German). All performing ensembles traveled to
Orlando, Fla. in the spring to compete in a music festival,
and brought back trophies and new performance
experiences under their belts.

The Annual Gala and Auction was
once again a tremendous success
and drew quite a crowd to the
Pentagon City Ritz-Carlton on
February 7, 2009, for an evening
of festivities and fundraising.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of
an army of volunteers and the

at O’Connell.

The Laurel Hill Golf Club in Lorton,
Va. was the backdrop for the
May 14, 2009 Connolly Golf Classic,
where close to 100 friends of
O’Connell came together for an
afternoon of golf and good times,
all to benefit O’Connell’s
needs-based tuition assistance
programs. At the end of the day,
new friends were made and more
than $30,000 was raised. The
O’Connell community is sincerely

ALUMNI CHALLENGE
Bishop O’Connell and Bishop Ireton have kicked off their 2009-2010
Annual Fund campaigns with a joint challenge geared toward alumni.
O’Connell’s Principal Joseph Vorbach (O’Connell class of 1983)
and Ireton’s Principal Timothy Hamer (Ireton class of 1978) are
taking this challenge personally.
Between now and January 31, 2010, alumni giving to each school’s
Annual Fund will be tracked, and the school with the highest
percentage of alumni participation will be declared the winner.
The losing principal will have to wear the other school’s uniform to
school for one whole day. Go Knights!

Joseph W. Connolly Scholarship
Murphy Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1997 to
recognize and pay tribute to Joseph Connolly,
beloved former O’Connell math teacher. The
scholarship is granted to a rising senior who
has demonstrated outstanding academic
achievement and citizenship.
This scholarship was established in 1999
by Mr. Robert Murphy ’67 on behalf of his
family (eight brothers and sisters are
O’Connell graduates) in memory of their
mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Murphy, beloved
former math teacher. The partial
scholarship is presented to a rising junior
who has demonstrated academic excellence
in mathematics.
Ballard Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1993
by Mr. and Mrs. J. Vernon Ballard in
memory of their son, John Anthony
Ballard ’70. The scholarship is granted
each year to incoming O’Connell freshmen
who have demonstrated both exceptional
academic achievement and outstanding
leadership ability at the middle school.
Henry Heishman Scholarship
The Henry Heishman was established in
memory of beloved O’Connell parent Henry
Heishman. The scholarship honors a rising
senior who demonstrates leadership skills
through a willingness to contribute to the
school. It honors a student who is humble,
hard working, respectful, active in
extracurricular activities and who has plans or
a desire to attend a four-year college.

Leadership Award
This scholarship was established by the
Muller family in honor of their father, COL
Frank Muller, beloved former math teacher.
This partial scholarship is awarded to a
student who has demonstrated high moral
character, personal discipline, academic
effort and leadership by example.

Scholarship
This scholarship fund was established in
2003 to recognize and pay tribute to Harry
“Jake” Jacobs, beloved former O’Connell
baseball coach.

Join the President’s Club
for 2009-2010
The President's Club is a special
group of donors who demonstrate
exceptional leadership and
generous commitment to the
mission of Bishop O’Connell High
School. Membership is open to
individuals, families or organizations
who make a minimum annual gift of
$1,000 to the Annual Fund. In the
fall, President’s Club members are
invited to an elegant reception in
recognition of their leadership. For
the 2009-2010 school year,
members who donate $1,100
or more will also be able to select
either a custom-made tie or tote
embellished with the Bishop
O'Connell logo. Ties and totes are
exclusive to President's Club
members only, and are available in
limited quantities.
