MUD is dirty and gloopy – yet we’re more than willing to smear it on our faces and slather it all over our bodies in the name of beauty. And for good reason. Despite its yucky and murky nature, the humble mud is packed with beauty benefits. Many tourists visit South Korea every year to take part in its Boryeong Mud Festival, from July 15-21. Participants are treated to a goo-filled day, where they can paint themselves with the famous mud. And other types of mud from around the world – sadly not the ones you can dig up in your back garden or on festival fields – are often used in beauty products, such as Dead Sea mud, rhassoul mud from Africa and Moor mud in Austria and Hungary. “In our experience, one of the best muds to use is rhassoul mud, which comes from the Atlas mountains in Africa,” says Lush’s Helen Ambrosen. “It has been used for thousands of years to clean hair since it helps mop up excess sebum and oil. Rhassoul also has exceptional antimicrobial properties, so it can help combat spots, or inflammation. It also calms so it will help alleviate scalp problems.” THE SCIENCE BIT I Natural mud is rich in minerals – magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium, to name a few. All these are essential to skin metabolism, especially as we get older when mineral levels in the body fall. The body does not produce minerals on its own – it needs outside sources other than water and nourishment. I Mud has a high cleansing ability. It gets rid of fats and dirt, discards dead skin cells and exposes a fresh skin layer, while soothing and moisturising. Combined, these effects make skin smoother, more flexible, and give it a clean, fresh and silky appearance. I A lot of mud types have antiseptic and oil controlling properties, making it perfect to use on people who suffer from frequent spotty break-outs or those with oily skin. MUD-DY FACE THE main benefits for mud-based products are for the face. Superdrug’s Mud Mask, £1.99, Ahava Purifying Mud mask, £15 (www.missgroovy.co.uk), and Dead Sea Source Detox heated mud mask, £1.49 for a sachet at Boots, will whisk away impurities and refresh lacklustre complexions. Lush’s Cupcake facemask, £3.50, contains the deep cleansing rhassoul mud. It’s ideal for problem skins or people who suffer from breakouts, as the mud has antiseptic properties. Moor Spa’s Refining Facial Mask, £15.95 (0845 130 6768/www.moorspa.co.uk), is made of pure herbal dark mud, containing extracts from herbs, grasses and minerals to nourish the skin. It can be used on all skin types, ideally twice or three times a week. Add radiance and vitality with Borghese Fango Delicato mud mask, £37 from House of Fraser and Selfridges (01273 408 800). Made of mineral-rich volcanic mud, it’s a luxurious facial treat for delicate and dry skins. BODILY MUD MUD is also good for the body, particularly in body wraps and treatments. Malki Dead Sea Black Mud Mask soap, £3.29 at Boots, will get to work removing rough skin from elbows, knees and feet. Get a sense of indulgence with The Sanctuary’s Rasul Mud, £5.95 from Boots, and Boots Spa Organic Body Mud, £4.99, which both work well to detoxify skin.
