November 2010 Alumni News Dear Jay, SFD, circa 1960s Fall is definitely upon us and we're all bundling up in coats, scarves, hats and gloves. I particularly love the coat in this SFD archived photo from the 1960s. We've hosted a few successful events this fall, mostly focused on career advice and resources. We heard insightful presentations from the Center for Women and Enterprise, and also from our own Jo Demetra. So now we kind of feel like starting off the holiday season in style. Hope you will join us for our holiday party on December 2nd, when Shaunt Sarian - handbag designer (www.shauntsarian.com) and SFD instructor - will be showcasing his new line of designer handbags, and even raffling one off to kick start this year's Alumni Scholarship Fund! Jo now has her own consulting business, helping designers go from concept to product using her motto of "doing it right the first time." excerpt from Jo Demetra's website: www.jodemetra.com Take your designs to the next level, side step the common mistakes in the cut and sew world, and do it right the first time. Use the expertise of a Design Consultant and Manufacturing Mentor with 20+ years in the apparel and accessory industries to bring your one item or entire collection to market. Whether you are an entrepreneur or a multi-million dollar business, the steps are the same. We will identify your unique customer and market niche, develop your products, prepare you for the development process, present a 3 of 6 Olivia Spence, Class of 1977 Olivia graduated from SFD in 1977 and was awarded the Designer's Line Award. Following graduation she worked in Seattle for three years for the one fashion designer there at that time, Malorie Nelson. Malorie was a textile designer, and it was there that Olivia learned her love of textiles. In 1980, she and her husband moved to New York, and Olivia worked for a number of companies: Albert Maxwell, Nicole Gadon Studio, and Design Library before landing a design job in 1986 working for Gloria Sachs, a Seventh Avenue designer, as an assistant designer. She helped design Gloria Sachs' cashmere sweater line, as well as working closely with Como, Italy mills developing Mrs. Sachs' signature paisley prints. From there Olivia went to Dana Buchman, a Bridge division of Liz Claiborne, and stayed for 19 years where she rose to be VP of Product Development, overseeing the design and textile development departments. In 2006, Olivia left Dana Buchman to join Coach as VP of Fabric, overseeing the development of all fabrics for their Women's accessories line and their apparel lines. Olivia is currently overseeing the textile development of Coach's Factory Store, Men's, and apparel businesses as well as managing the fabric purchasing department. Recently, Olivia hosted a group of SFD students at Coach, as part of their annual fall trip to New York. 2/14/11 11:19 AM SFD Alumni News - November 2010 https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_previe... complete development package to factories for creative, accurate, and cost-effective production. Class Notes Leena Dunn ('74) Leena has been working on the the show "The Office" since July, now in its 7th season. She has also been working with a fine arts photographer who hopes to use some of her images for a gallery and/or book that he's working on. Several years ago, Leena acquired several 1940's-50's costume illustrations as collectors' items. She was recently contacted by an assistant to Deborah Nadoolman Landis, Director of the David C. Copley Center for Costume Design at UCLA, and learned they would like to include several images "from the collection of Eileen A Dunn" in a new book by Ms. Landis. The new book will be a survey of the art of motion picture costume illustration, "celebrating costume designers and costume illustrators whose exceptional imaginations and lively characterizations contributed so much to the movies that we love." Carrie Levey Barnett, ('80) I run the US operation of a Chinese garment company called Chinamine USA (www.ChinamineUSA.com), located in the heart of New York's garment district. Having been a fashion designer for over 20 years primarily in children's wear (Healthtex, Playschool, Speedo), I branched out to marketing one of the largest Chinese garment manufacturers in China - Shenzhen Chinasilk/Deqing Chinasilk. Today we make over 20 million garments yearly. Working with designers from a wide range of companies from Tommy Hilfiger, Kate Spade, Milly NY, Gap, Talbots, Betsey Johnson, and Haute Hippie (to name a few), I collaborate with them on fashion directions and their needs. I am involved in designing the fabrics, embellishments and trends that we present to the designers, as well as working with the R&D and Sourcing teams to negotiate pricing (trying to fit the garment to a price point while maintaining design integrity of the garments). I travel to China about five times annually. In our NY office we run an intern program, where students participate in meetings with customers, hone their photoshop and digital photography skills, work in our fabric library, research trends, and gain a total understanding of the fashion world from 5 of 6 2/14/11 11:19 AM SFD Alumni News - November 2010 https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_previe... sourcing to design.
