Just add your creative touch for a one-of-a-kind card that shows Mom just how much you care. It’s a wonderful opportunity to show our moms just how much we appreciate them! p PET PLEASERS O We can say “so long” to unsightly and unsanitary pet droppings when all of our pet owners clean up after their animals. The next time you walk your pet, don’t be caught empty-handed—use a leash and carry a scoop or plastic bag for quick cleanups. A SPLASH FLASH Swimming season is here, and water safety is a priority. Please remember these important pool policies: • for their safety, minors must be supervised by an adult at all times • proper swimwear is required • no glass or alcohol in the pool or pool area • keep noise levels low • always close and latch the gates. Enjoy! DOORWAY DO’S & DON’TS When kept clean and tidy, your entryway can be an attractive approach to your home. Please don’t allow your home to spread beyond your doorway, though. Entryways and the areas around them must remain clear at all times. Doormats are welcome, but garbage bags, storage items, bikes, etc. are not. Verde Valley State Parks he Verde Valley is home to several T state parks, where friends and families can experience outdoor activities together. Dead Horse Ranch State Park, Slide Rock State Park, Red Rock State Park, Fort Verde State Historic Park, and Jerome State Historic Park all offer diverse opportunities for outdoor recreation. Dead Horse Ranch State Park is located along the Verde River and north of Cottonwood. It was the site of a working ranch in the past but is now a popular recreation park with camping, fishing, cabins, walking trails, paddling, and bird watching. The 3,300-foot elevation accounts for the mild temperatures that are ideal for camping, mountain biking in the Coconino National Forest, hiking along the Verde River, canoeing, picnicking, fishing, or just wading in the cool water. Slide Rock State Park is located north of Sedona along Oak Creek. It features spectacular red rocks, good swimming areas, walking trails, scenic views, and historic buildings. A historic orchard on site produces delicious apples each fall. The park is named after the famous Slide Rock, a stretch of slippery creek bottom adjacent to the homestead. The park is ideal for wildlife viewing, short leisurely walks, picnics, and swimming. s J Others’ Mogotht aebrill for a :I J s ’ t a h W ut, ike, can’t n’s Mother: B ’s Mother: M Albert Einsteiur senior picture. Hiking trails wind through Manzanita and Juniper trees that reach the rich banks of Oak Creek. Green meadows are framed by native vegetation and hills of red rock. The creek meanders through the park, creating a diverse riparian habitat for plants and wildlife. Get a glimpse into Arizona’s history at Fort Verde State Historic Park in Camp Verde, where soldiers were stationed for General Crook’s U.S. Army between the 1870s and 1880s. The fort was home to officers, doctors, families, enlisted men, and scouts. The park is the bestpreserved example of an Indian Wars period fort in Arizona, with several of the original buildings still standing. Stories of mining adventures abound at Jerome State Historic Park in the town of Jerome. See the Douglas Mansion set in historic period rooms and check out the mining tools of the trade. A self-guided tour of the historic park gives insight into the town’s mining king, James Douglas. It is one of the finest examples of Spanish Colonial architecture in the country. The white, Moorish-inspired design of the outside is elegant and simple, in striking contrast to the ornate entrance. The interior is richly decorated in paintings, carvings, frescoes, and statues. Appropriately, the mission is known as the “Sistine Chapel of the New World.” Today, the mission still functions as a parish church and center of the Tohono O’odham community. It is open to the public from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. To reach the mission, take I-19 nine miles south of Tucson to exit 92. For more information, please log on to www.sanxaviermission.org, or call 520-294-2624. Historic Route 66 Fun Run T his month, more than 800 classic, custom, and unique automobiles will cruise through Seligman, Kingman, and Topock/Golden Shores. Thousands of onlookers will join the celebration of the Historic Route 66 Fun Run, May 3–5. The “party” starts up Friday, May 3, in Seligman, with live music, entertainment, and a parade. It shifts into second gear at 9 a.m. Saturday, with a jaunt to downtown Kingman for a show-and-shine viewing and judging. There’ll be plenty of entertainment and food to enjoy. Then it slides into high Sunday morning in Topock/Golden Shores for the final gathering and awards. Route 66, called the Main Street of America, opened in November 1926. It was one of the most famous original U.S. Highways, cutting a 2,448-mile pathway from Chicago through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona before reaching Los Angeles. Though it isn’t on many maps today, remaining sections of this historic mother road take motorists on a nostalgic ride through towns steeped in Americana and reminiscent of a slower, simpler time. The Historic Route 66 Fun Run began in 1988, after the highway had been decommissioned and replaced with Interstate 40. Arizona maintains the longest, original stretch of Route 66.
