It is time to pack a long sleeve shirt , sweater, a light jacket…nothing beats this time of the year in Florida! The sounds of freedom are heard nearly all day long as riders tend to hit the roads a lot more. Along with that comes visitors from up north so beware and pay a whole lot more attention to your surroundings. This month the party starts at Seminole Harley-Davidson from October 11-13 as they bring Sanford Bikefest back to the dealership. The party continues at Seminole Harley from October 17-20. See pages 28 and 29 which list their schedule of events. Hogtoberfest at Orlando Harley-Davidson is from October 1820 please see page 2 for more information. The Legendary Boot Hill really has it going on this year with all day and night events taking place, see page 19 for more information. Harley-Davidson of Crystal River is celebrating their 13th Anniversary on October 19-20. If you’re here visiting and looking for a great ride, see page 12. Another great location is the Fox Head Lounge see page 43, a trip to Biketoberfest is not complete unless you have made the ride over to this old biker hang-out. There are a whole lot more events taking place in October other then Biketoberfest. Take your time...pick and choose, most of all ride and have fun. The event benefited the Professional Fire Fighters of Lake County Charities. There was great entertainment under the band shelter, plenty of vendors and lots of people. The parking lot was full of bikes coming and going all day long, the event also draws a lot of four wheelers where there is also plenty of parking. FREE BEER anyone...it kept flowing all day long, they never ran out. The Fire Fighters were grillin hamburgers, brats and dogs...it simply could not get any better. More pictures on page 11. Hark October, 2013 Rebel Rider Magazine 9 CARTER, TY M. Rank: Specialist Organization: U.S. Army Company: B Troop, 3d Squadron Division: 61st Cavalry Regiment Born: January 25, 1980, Spokane, WA Departed: No Entered Service At: Antioch, CA Date of Issue: 08/26/2013 Place / Date: Oct, 3, 2009, Outpost Keating, Nuristan Province, Afghanistan Citation Medal Of Honor For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty:Specialist Ty M. Carter distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a Scout with Bravo Troop, 3d Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, during combat operations against an armed enemy in Kamdesh District, Nuristan Province, Afghanistan on October 3, 2009. On that morning, Specialist Carter and his comrades awakened to an attack of an estimated 300 enemy fighters occupying the high ground on all four sides of Combat Outpost Keating, employing concentrated fire from recoilless rifles, rocket propelled grenades, anti-aircraft machine guns, mortars and small arms fire. Specialist Carter reinforced a forward battle position, ran twice through a 100 meter gauntlet of enemy fire to resupply ammunition and voluntarily remained there to defend the isolated position. Armed with only an M4 carbine rifle, Specialist Carter placed accurate, deadly fire on the enemy, beating back the assault force and preventing the position from being overrun, over the course of several hours. With complete disregard for his own safety and in spite of his own wounds, he ran through a hail of enemy rocket propelled grenade and machine gun fire to rescue a critically wounded comrade who had been pinned down in an exposed position. Specialist Carter rendered life extending first aid and carried the Soldier to cover. On his own initiative, Specialist Carter again maneuvered through enemy fire to check on a fallen Soldier and recovered the squad's radio, which allowed them to coordinate their evacuation with fellow Soldiers. With teammates providing covering fire, Specialist Carter assisted in moving the wounded Soldier 100 meters through withering enemy fire to the aid station and before returning to the fight. Specialist Carter's heroic actions and tactical skill were critical to the defense of Combat Outpost Keating, preventing the enemy from capturing the position and saving the lives of his fellow Soldiers. Specialist Ty M. Carter's extraordinary heroism and selflessness above and beyond the call of duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, Bravo Troop, 3d Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division and the United States Army 10 Gator Harley-Davidson 2nd Annual Chili Cook-Off October 2013, Rebel Rider Magazine 11 12 October, 2013 Rebel Rider Magazine 13 THUNDER MUSIC PARK BIKE FEST 2013 RAIN, RAIN, RAIN!! That’s how it was just about the whole week-end, but Saturday proved to be a much better day because for the biggest part of the day we were without rain. I spent all of my time at TMP and never made it to Starke for their bike fest; I was having too much fun to leave. Mike and his staff did a great job putting this together. HD of Gainesville brought a trailer load of the new 2014 Harleys along with the Strip Club Chopper crew and some of their awesome rides. All the vendors were great and I got to see many old friends that I haven’t seen in a long time. This is a great event so be sure to go next year, it will probably be even better Rebel Rider Duke To add to Dukes article Push and I did make it to Starke, the rain was steady the whole time we spent our time talking with vendors and some of the bikers that were Hard Core. Many large groups hung out at a very nice place called Down Town Grill. The whole entire staff was first class. This is certainly a place you want to put on your Get Out And Ride List. Push is a Hot Wing Connoisseur, she told me the wings she eat ranked right up there with some of the best. Down Town Grill is heavy into supporting veterans including a lot of Vet Discounts...if you’re a vet you certainly want to take the time to meet the wonderful owners...they have all kinds of veteran memorvillia hanging in the business. I will not give you the answer to my question, your going to have to find out for yourself...so if you’re here for Biketoberfest hit he road and visit one of Lake County Florida’s hottest biker hang outs. Outdoor deck, mist systems, parking for over a thousand bikes, beautiful lake views with breath taking sunsets. These are only a few things I will share. The rest is up to you to find out. October, 2013 Rebel Rider Magazine 17 Out And About 18 19 Sidelines Kicks Off Bike Night Sidelines in Mt. Dora has started a Bike Night. As I write this article they have had two so far advertised only on Pam * Phil’s and my Face Book. Turn out has been really good, I expect this Bike Night to become the largest in Lake County in no time. Sidelines has a lot to offer with an outdoor deck, indoor seating with a whole lot of flat screen TV’s, good beverage specials, great grilled wings, awesome pizza's with other daily specials on the menu. Pam * Phil do a great job running the Bike Night providing beautiful awards for the Bike Show. Corn Hole boards are set up for those who want a little added fun, service is always good, lots of parking for bikes, and if it rains you can always take your four wheeler and still hang out with friends. Riders are showing up from all over the Central Florida area. Rebel Rider Magazine will be covering this event as much as we can...so show up...you never know when your picture might be taken next. Hark 20 October, 2013 Rebel Rider Magazine 21 Chief Crows Private Park Here’s one for ya……Out off of sr. 100 in Florahome, Putman County is a great place to ride to and do some relaxing. I am not sure what Jack, owner of Buzzard Beach, Chili was called but it was simply awesome. While tasting other chili’s I gave Jacks a try...I noticed it had jalapeño's that had been cooked down for some time. No Doubt this chili was fabulous. Not sure who won the contest...but Buzzard Beach got my vote. One time I asked Jack…how do you get so lucky to hire such pretty girls...Jacks reply was they come to me. When you go to Buzzard Beach you will see what I mean. Not only is the food some of the best you will eat in Florida but the service is always second to none. Hark 24 October is Breast Cancer Month Let’s all remember the victims of breast cancer this month. Many of my friends have asked why they hardly ever see me with my wife so here’s her picture of her and her 2006 1200 Sportster. Her name is Jan, she is a mail carrier in the city of Gainesville and works on Saturdays when most bike events are held and that’s why you never see her. She is also a breast cancer survivor celebrating 9 years of being cancer free; she is also my very best friend. I love you honey. October , 2013 Rebel Rider Magazine 27 28 October, 2013 Rebel Rider Magazine 29 Out and About with Cowboy Dean The Great Suwannee River Clean Up took place at the boat ramp in Branford FL on Saturday the 21st. 20 volunteers participated in cleaning up . We worked from ½ mile north of the bridge back to the boat ramp on both sides of the river. It was amazing the amount of garbage we found floating and along the shoreline. 449 lbs. of trash including one semi-trailer tire, its tube, a car tire, 2 - 55 gal drums and massive amounts of plastic and aluminum was removed in about 3 short hours. This was my first experience volunteering for a river clean up and was amazed at the amount of trash people throw out into the water. One of the volunteers is this month’s National Geographic article called the Bahamas Blue Holes. Like biking, boating is pleasurable but all the trash distracts from enjoying the natural beauty of the bi-ways and water ways. October 5th will be another clean up on Newnan’s Lake in Gainesville. It will be at Palms Point at 9:00 am. P.S. They feed us great hamburgers and sausages with all the trimmings. The Street Bob and Super Glide Dyna models both return with minor enhancements, including standard fitment of the Twin Cam 103 powertrain, and the Softail lineup repeats with six variations, including the popular mid-year breakout addition. With all the excitement of the upcoming and over by now 110th Anniversary of HarleyDavidson it was almost possible to miss the really big news from the Motor Company. The 2014 Harley-Davidson lineup has been announced, eight of the new bikes benefit from an initiative that has been named “Project Rushmore.” Project Rushmore is the largest scale now model launch in Harley-Davidson’s One Hundred And Ten year history. The new bikes will feature improved braking performance, enhanced rider ergonomics, and dramatic styling updates that completely redefine and fundamentally transform the touring motorcyclist’s experience according to the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. Project Rushmore enhancements show up in four categories...Control, Infotainment, Feel and Style. The eight new bikes for 2014 are Road King, Street Glide, Street Glide Special, Electra Glide Ultra Classic, Ultra Limited, Tri Glide Ultra, CVO Ultra Limited and the CVO Road King. 2014 CVO Breakout The big news is the Twin Cooled High Output Twin Cam engine, this is called the next generation of the Harley-Davidson powerplant. This is the long-rumored liquid cooled Harley engine, finally implemented in a production motorcycle. There’s a 103 cubic inch version that will initially appear in the Electra Glide Ultra Limited and Tri Glide Ultra. A new Reflex linked antilock braking system {ABS} is standard on the new bikes, along with Daymaker LED and dual halogen lighting. Infotainment has been upgraded to include a new color screen system with voice recognition. Aerodynamics and ergonomics have been improved, including a new batwing fairing with splitstream venting. And style has been updated-but each new bike is still very recognizably a HarleyDavidson, through and through. 2014 CVO Limited Additional enhancements in the lineup include restyling of the Fat Bob, now incorporating the popular Dark Custom elements which replace shiny chrome with mean, blacked-out finish’s. All 2014 Sportsters can be ordered with ABS for the first time, along with an available keyless, hands-free security system. ABS is standard on all V-Rod models. 2014 CVO Road King See More On Page 35 34 Other Pictures On This Page From The 110th 2014 CVO Softail Deluxe October, 2013 Rebel Rider Magazine 35 Bike Night at Char’s Place WOW! By Robyn on page 40 38 Out And About With Duke Thunder Music Park. Chili Cook-Off 39 What a month! Rooster was traveling down St Rd. 41 in the early morning headed to work when a car pulled out in front of him. He was doing the speed limit (60 mph), around 8 am on his way to work! She admitted at the scene she was in a hurry and NOT paying attention, he collided with her car. As of writing this he was still in the hospital, with multiple injuries. Two years ago my ex and I were involved in a similar collision, we were traveling a 30 mph road when a SUV ran the stop sign, we did not have time to stop, the driver had FL minimum ins. and our own insurance was not enough to cover mounting medical bills. PLEASE, PLEASE, LOOK TWICE. Nothing is so important as paying attention when behind the wheel, put the phone down, turn down the radio, etc. This is happening way too often for me, every week I hear of another BIKER DOWN, some survive, some don't. Even with proper insurance the medical bills can add up, families are losing members, this is avoidable if we'd all look twice (maybe even 3 times), it really can save a life! Please, brothers & sisters, while on the roadways, remember: that person on the bike may be your brother, sister, mother, father, son or daughter!! Let's all ride safe with eyes & ears wide open. See you in the Wind with Big Grins, Robyn I was going to focus on Breast Cancer Awareness this issue and would like to give a shout out to many brave survivors like Cheyenne (bar manager at Willard's in Morriston) who is 7+ yrs in remission, Patty who is 10+ yrs in remission, Duke's wife (our own Rebel Rider rep's 'better half' who has many years in remission, and all the programs (michelle-o-gram: free or reduced cost mammograms in honor of a great woman who lost her battle) to help raise awareness of this deadly disease that takes too many lives each year. Harley Davidson of Crystal River will have a run Oct. 5, please get out & support this worthy cause. Please, ladies (& gentlemen-yes, men can get it, too) check yourself regularly, see your doctor for an exam, take advantage of the free or reduced cost in October. Another incident has drawn my attention, again. Renee Giles & her hubby were involved in a cage vs. bike collision not too long ago, Heads and Tails Lounge in Floral City hosted a benefit run for her to help offset the high medical bills they are now facing. Renee was not able to ride her benefit run, but did show for a brief moment at the end. Just behind this event, another friend was involved in another "cage vs. bike" crash. 40 More Pictures From Robyns Coverage Of The Renee Giles Run 41 More Pictures Renee Giles Run by Robyn Below Picture 110th Anniversary Harley-Davidson 42 RIDING SOB Boot Hill Saloon, on Main Street, in the heart of Daytona Beach; and O.B.s, Restaurant and Lounge, just north of beautiful downtown DeLand, to the Rebel Rider family of advertisers. Stop on in for a cold one during Biketoberfest….. Plan ahead for the 12th Annual Ocoee Founders Day Poker Run on Saturday, November 2nd. Registration starts at 9:30 at The Sandwich Shop on Clark Rd. and the run ends at “The Bar”, also on Clark Rd. The poker run benefit’s the Ocoee Police Department’s Holiday Toys for Kids in Need fund….. Have ya had enough yet? I know I have. Time to hit the back roads, the bars, you know all that good stuff. See ya next month! Biketoberfest! Octoberfest! Rocktoberfest! I ask you, is there any month more festive than October? Time to party!….. Hey, if you’re looking for a great place to camp during Biketoberfest, head on up to Thunder Gulch in Bunnell. They’ve cut their rates this year and they have the Black Cloud Saloon right there on site! What more could you ask for? Go to www.theblackcloud.biz and check ‘em out….. So the 9th Annual Sanford Bikefest “Thunder in the Streets”, scheduled for October 10-13, has been cancelled due to a lack of sponsorship. Wait, no - now it hasn’t been cancelled - it’s been changed into something more community inclusive called “Celebrate Sanford”. But they still want us bikers to come - so there are some bike events on the west side of town on Friday, and there will be a bike show, and bike stuff, and bike parking on Saturday, and - I don’t really know what it is. You can go to www.celebratesanford.com and try to figure it out for yourself. I do know that they have The Outlaws playing in Fort Mellon Park on Saturday, October12th, at 8:00 and they’re still going to have beer so that’s good enough for me….. I’d like to take a minute to welcome the legendary -Brad [email protected] Riding SOB on Facebook 407-432-5845 43 out of town. No great scenic journeys, but there is some stuff to see. You’re going to want to do “The Loop” at least once. You can head up and down the coast - there are some places where you can actually see the water.. And if your looking for some hills, or at least something that passes for a hill here in Florida, you’re going to have to head north or west over towards Lake County. BIKETOBERFEST FOR DUMMIES No - I’m not calling anybody a dummy. This is just kind of a starter guide for anyone that has never been to Daytona. And no, I’m not claiming to be an expert, these are just some of my observations through the years - I have been to every Biketoberfest and Bike Week since ‘96. And no, it won’t have all the answers - I’m sure I’ll miss lots and lots of things. But hey, maybe it’ll be a little help. Biketoberfest is pretty spread out now too. You can head off in just about any direction and make a day of it. Ride north on US 1 past Ormond and you’ll hit the White Eagle, go on into Bunnell and hit the Dog Pound or Black Cloud. Or if you’re really hungry, there’s a little stand called the Bantam Chef where you can great, big-ass fish sandwich (stop at the Flagler Bar for a cheap drink and the Bantam Chef will deliver the sandwich right to your bar stool!). So what is Biketoberfest? It’s kind of like Bike Week’s little brother, same family, only a little smaller. Same places, same attitude, just a little less crowded. Where Bike Week kinda formed on it’s own around the Daytona bike races over 70 years ago, Biketoberfest was created by the Convention and Visitor Bureau just over 20 years ago to fill in a slow time in the tourist season. Hey, if the bikers come and spend lots of money in the spring, let’s bring ‘em back in the fall and they’ll bring more money! Southbound will take you down past The Last Resort and the No Name Saloon. If you’re looking for some real Florida seafood you just can’t beat JB’s Fishcamp on A1A in New Smyrna Beach, and you’re going to want to stop in at the Old Dixie Pub in Mims for a cold one before you make your way back to Daytona. So where do you start? Gotta be Main Street. I know everybody complains about Main Street - the traffic sucks, nowhere to park, the cops won’t let you have fun (keep the drinks in the confined areas, don‘t dare flash anyone, and God help you if you do a burnout), too crowded, too expensive. But what can you say, Main Street is ground zero for Biketoberfest. Party central - Froggy’s, Dirty Harry’s, Main Street Station, the legendary Boot Hill Saloon. Hell, if you look up biker bar in the dictionary you’ll find a picture of the Boot Hill Saloon. Can’t really say you’ve been to Biketoberfest if you don’t make it to Main Street. Another day trip is southwest over to Seminole H-D and on into Orlando H-D. The dealerships have always got a lot going on for Biketoberfest, and hey you can always use another Harley t-shirt. If you take SR 415 over, you can stop in at the Cabbage Patch for the world famous coleslaw wrestling (not to ruin it but the girls that wrestle don’t look much like the girls on the t-shirt), and then hit the Foxhead Lounge for one of Loretta’s famous bloody Mary's. OB’s in Deland on 17 is another fun place to go! Next up is north on US1 to the Ormond Beach area. Iron Horse Saloon, Broken Spoke, Beaver Bar - another big party area - and the best chance to catch some bigger name bands. You’re not going to find any Sturgis caliber bands at Biketoberfest, but up in this area you’ve got a better chance of seeing somebody you’ve heard of. You’ve also got the Wally World of Harley dealerships up here - Destination Daytona. Not to be missed - the steak tips out back at Iron Horse and living legend David Allan Coe. David Allan Coe always does several shows at the Iron Horse and you sure want to catch him if you can.. There’s still lots more to see and do, but I’ve run out of time and space here. Hope this bit of info helps. I know sometimes it might seem like some of the residents and the police don’t so much “welcome” us as they do “put up” with us, but just remember to ride safe and keep it cool and you’ll have a great time. And then you can come back again next year and do it all over again! -BRAD If you want to do something other than drink, head on over to the speedway. There will be races and just about every bike company and aftermarket manufacturer you can think of will be set up there. You can test ride almost any bike made, all at one location. All kinds of stuff going on up and down A1A, US 1 and Beach Street. Lots of dealers and vendors on Beach Street, all centered around Riverfront Park and the old Daytona H-D, which is now a museum/store. Not to miss on US 1 is Tropical Tattoo’s Old School Bike Show on Thursday. Get there early ’cause there will be a crowd. If you want to get in some riding, you’ve gotta head 44 October, 2013 Rebel Rider Magazine 45 Cowboy Wrap Not everyone has the big bucks to do Air Brush artwork on their ride. You have to put Kirbside on your scheduled ride for the second Saturday of the month...Hark 47 Rippin’ and Running with Doc big Halloween Bash out at the Bat Ranch if you haven’t been Google it and go you wont be disappointed. There’s also Sanford Bikefest and while your over there be sure and swing by Seminole Harley Davidson cause there’s always a party going on over there with activities and lots of great concerts. Well I’ve get back to the party so till next time remember WFO till you see God then brake. Doc More Pictures 49 Hey ya’ll well all I’ve gotta say is thank God summers over and we can get back to enjoying our riding without melting us and our scoots. Again I went out to Kirbside on Plymouth Sorrento road for there Monthly Bash they have on every second Saturday which is getting bigger and bigger each month but why shouldn’t it combined with great entertainment good people and free grub what’s not to like. Also the Club Fallen Few were hosting a benefit for Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital so it was definitely the place to be. But earlier that day I was up in Leesburg at Gator Harley-Davidson for theirSecond Annual Chili Cook off and let me tell you it’s getting bigger and better each time and the band Shaky Pudding were there tearin’ it up as they always do . Well I also got an unexpected treat when my good friend Eddy asked me to drive David Lee’s (owner of The World Famous Irene’s in Tavares) tour bus tour to Tampa to see Kid Rock and ZZTop so of course my natural response to such a question was “Hell Yeah”. And to top it off the bus was full of the Barmaids from the Oasis Saloon in Sorrento lets just say a Freakin’ incredible time was had by one and all!!! Also Sidelines Sports Bar in Mt. Dora has started up a bike night on Mondays now with The Great Bikenight Pam Hosting come on out and check it out So fall is here and that means so many things are coming up like a li’l get together I like to call Biketoberfest and Roscoe’s Chili Cook off which I say hands down is still the best damn party I’ve been to in well over thirty years.
