SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 17, 2016 Mary sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, and it will not be taken from her. -Lk 10:39 -Lk 10:42 Scripture Readings Pastor’s Corner For the Week of July 17, 2016 Gen 18:1-10a; Ps 15:2-5; Col 1:24-28; Lk 10:38-42 Mi 6:1-4, 6-8; Ps 50:5-6, 8-9, 16bc-17, 21, 23; Mt 12:38-42 Mi 7:14-15, 18-20; Ps 85:2-8; Mt 12:46-50 Tues. Because the Titanic is sinking!”) or it could be one of the wisest statements. When everything around us is not going the way we want it, we can get very frustrated. When we think we will lose everything we rely on (house, job, life etc.) we can panic and start to flounder like a chicken with its head cut off (Headless Mike the chicken). We can often act like Martha, worried about every little thing. There is an alternative. We can act with calmness and serenity in the face of the same worries, as did Mary. We can see the difficulties of life as opportunities to remind ourselves of what is important, of what blessings we already have. If guests show up unexpectedly, we can, like Abraham and Sarah, welcome them with open hearts and make them feel comfortable. If we are undergoing pain and affliction, we can, like Paul, offer them back to God in union with the sufferings of Christ for the good of the Body of Christ. These are not easy choices. But if our faith is strong, we will experience the peace of Christ even if the Titanic is sinking underneath us. Blessings to all who offer their sufferings to God for us, especially through the most holy prayer of the Eucharist! Amen. Sun. Mon. Priest Mass Intentions Sat. Sun. Tues. Wed. Thurs. Fri. Sat. The wisdom of Carmelite spirituality provides us with practical considerations for our purposeful journey in faith. RE CLASSES – Your child’s faith is important to us! We are pleased to announce that our parish will be hosting the Denver Catholic Biblical School this coming fall on Monday mornings from 8:30-10:30 am! Classes begin the week of September 12th. If you’ve ever wanted to understand the Bible in a deeper way, grasp the big picture of salvation history, get more out of scripture readings at Mass, and grow in your knowledge and love of God and his Church, then you must enroll in this course! Visit www.sjvdenver.edu/biblicalschool for more information and to register. Save the date and attend one of the following information sessions, held at our parish, before class begins where you will hear a sample lesson called, The Road to Emmaus, and get more information about the program: July 25 at 6:30 pm and Aug 22 at 9:00 am. Several weeks ago, Judy and I went down to Pearl Street to do some evangelizing. We meet Stephan who said, “He was angry with God, because he has experienced some recent tragedies”. Judy did amazing job comforting this suffering soul. Stephan is a homeless vet. Please pray for him along with the others we have met this day who are in need of your prayers. If you would like to join us in street evangelization please come to our monthly St. Paul Street Evangelization Classes on the first Wednesday of every month at 6:30pm in the Adult Ed. Room, or contact John Cox ([email protected]). Registrations are now open. Forms are located in the pamphlet rack in the Narthex, or on our Parish web-site. TILLIE & MAIZEY – Wearing a silly hat was an option for Day 1 of VBS. Tillie figured that Sarahraria would wear her Spelunker hat that she bought for the occasion. How did she know it would be Silly Hat day? That was OK, Tillie didn’t need to be like her friend. She could just wear the newspaper hat that dad made. Oh now that would be funny, no one else would be wearing a newspaper on their head. RE CHALLENGE – Be creative with your ideas, you don’t have to be like everyone else. Do you love spending time with children? MUMS (Mothers Uplifting Mothers Spiritually) is in need of adults (classroom leads and substitutes) to care for our children two mornings each month. You would be needed the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month September through May, 8:45 am to 11:00 (meetings are 9:00 to 11:00). These are paid positions. If interested please contact Sarah at [email protected]. Please pray how you can help St. Francis of Assisi Parish. Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven” (Mt 7:21). It will soon be time for the Ministry Fair. Consider how God is calling you to help St. Francis of Assisi Parish and sign up! Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekends: So many times, we are like Martha, “anxious and worried about many things," that we forget the most important thing – Jesus.
