Asking Myself “Why, Is that really so?”
- DPSI Manager Uday Jana takes on a new challenge with Limitless Aspiration
Since its launch, DPSI (Doosan Power Systems India) employees have made consistent efforts to adopt the
Doosan Way into their daily lives. Recently, DPSI launched a campaign called “Our Story, Our Doosan Way” to
capture and highlight such cases within the company to demonstrate behavioral changes. DPSI employees
actively participated in this campaign to identify and share exemplary stories within the company. The story
shared below captures the intrinsic drive of Uday S Jana, DPSI Plant Engineering Team Civil and Architectural
Department, in setting advanced processes and systems.
DPSI has been carrying out dynamic analysis* using
Structural Analysis and Design (STAAD) software,
whereas Systems Applications and Products (SAP)
gives more accurate results. With an inner resolve to
be better, Jana trained himself in dynamic analysis in
SAP through online and external trainings.
“Engineering is my passion, and I always make sure
to keep myself updated with the latest engineering
practices. In the Mong Duong II project**, there was a
requirement to provide TG pedestal dynamic analysis.
I realized that if we do this in SAP, the quality of our
analysis would be much better and would also have
easier client acceptance. SAP is tougher than the
previously used STAAD software, as it is not userfriendly. But the accuracy of the results and the
output is much better in SAP software.”
To enable this, he first tried to learn as much as he
could by doing online trainings on SAP. To further
enhance his fundamental capability, he attended an
external seminar conducted by an industry expert in
the field of dynamic analysis. In the end, he
successfully applied dynamic analysis in calculating
the vibration of the turbine turning gear for the first
time in DPSI.
Taking Himself and His Team to the Next Level
He is now training his team members on how to use
SAP. “My team members completed their training and
successfully applied dynamic analysis using SAP for
the Bandel Project,” he said. He cares about
improving not only himself but the whole team.
“I have great faith in the Doosan Way. It inspired me
to raise the bar and start competing with myself.
During discussions with colleagues from other
두산사보영문 2014.04내지-최종.indd 3
organizations, I understood that STAAD is not the
best tool for doing dynamic analysis. This made me
question why we were still using STAAD at DPSI. I
also felt that DPSI had limited capability in dynamic
analysis. I decided to change this, and I did.”
Jana’s colleagues at DPSI also gave him abundant
praise. General Manager Sanjay Bansal said, “There
are some people who are capable and can work very
well by themselves. But Jana has shown the
importance of inclusiveness. He increases his own
knowledge while at the same time working with
others to improve team capability.”
Pranshu Garg, his team member, also added, “Jana
has been extremely forthcoming in transferring his
capability to me on conducting dynamic analysis in
SAP software. He openly and selflessly shared his
knowledge, which is a remarkable thing to do.”
Deputy Manager Soumitra Haldar stressed, “Jana
never misses an opportunity to take up new things,
quickly learn them and then share it with the team.
He has clearly demonstrated this quality by building
the team’s capability.”
The Doosan Way concept of Limitless Aspiration asks
the question, “Have you felt proud of yourself for the
growth achieved by setting higher goals?” If we have
more Doosan people who can say “Yes!” to this
question without hesitation like Manager Jana, the
future of Doosan will be even brighter.
*Dynamic Analysis: The condition or changes of stress imposed to destroy
materials are analyzed by lowering the strength of materials while taking the
vibration cycle and attenuation characteristics of a structure into consideration.
In power plants, it is used to calculate the impact of the vibration from highspeed rotating turbines to the surrounding parts.
**Mong Duong II Project: The construction project of a coal-fired power plant
with a capacity of 1,200MW in Vietnam was awarded to Doosan Heavy
Industries & Construction in 2010.

Promoting a Culture of Book
Reading in Doosan
- Doosan e-Book Library, a collection of more than 2,000
business and job-related e-books available in Korea
- More than 1,300 e-books checked out from FebruaryMarch, DLI “plans to build a larger collection”
Taekyu Kim, Manager of Doosan
Infracore, who has borrowed 47 books
from the Doosan e-Library, reads an
e-book on his tablet.
Now, free e-books are available to employees in Korea at
the company’s e-book library with just a few clicks.
Doosan established an e-book library to encourage
employees to be more self-directed in their learning. Doosan
Group’s e-Library was officially launched in February 2014.
On the first page of e-Doosan University, click on e-Library
to access. One person can borrow up to three books at
once for 10-15 days. If a book is already checked out, you
can reserve the book, and it will be sent to you
automatically when it is returned. Currently, a collection of
more than 2,000 books of more than 1,700 types related to
business is available.
More and More Employees Using e-library
As the e-library enters its third month, usage is also on the
rise. During the pilot operation period from February 1 to
March 27, more than 1,300 books were checked out. “It is
convenient to use as it is linked to e-Doosan University,”
said Manager Taekyu Kim of Doosan Infracore Global P/S
(Product Support) Team, who has borrowed 47 books. “I
usually read books using a mobile device when commuting
from Incheon to Seoul, and I hope more diverse e-book
content is provided.”
Vice President Kyungsook Moon of the DLI HRD Planning
Team said, “The e-library creates an atmosphere where
Doosan employees can study with books whenever and
wherever, and the merits are that it is cheaper than paper
books and free from loss or damage.” He added, “We plan
to build a larger collection of e-books down the road.”
How to Use e-Library
Doosan Group e-Library can be accessed through various devices. Download the Book
Player program for PC, or the Book Cube My Library application for iOS or Android. If
you try to log in through the application for the first time, you may run into a
certification error. In that case, go to the e-Doosan University website for your first log in.
With the record of access at least once, you can log in through the application using your
mobile device.
Doosan opened an e-Library to users in February. This is a

Oricom Wins 30 Billion Won in
New Projects from Eight
Advertisers
- Oricom’s success attributable to representative
system that formed IMC Idea Group
All Oricom employees gathered to celebrate winning a
series of projects, including KB Financial Holdings, and
to bolster the winning spirit of the team in charge at
Oricom Pride Hall on the 6th floor of the head office.
Oricom has received much attention in the advertisement
industry as it moved at a brisk pace: marking the chances of
winning a bid at 89%, receiving 30 billion won in new
projects from eight advertisers, declaring the Vision IMC
(Integrated Marketing Communication)* Idea Group, and
winning the grand prize for the “22nd Outstanding
Advertisement Selected by Customers,” with the “Beautiful
Planet Earth” of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction
recently produced by Oricom.
As KB Financial Group Inc. became a client once again after
four years, after delivering a bid presentation in mid-March.
Oricom now has concluded contracts with a total of eight
advertisers, including KB Financial Holdings, Nexen Tire,
Kyowon Wells, Our Home, Sports Toto, Woongjin Chemical
and Amway in the first quarter of this year alone.
As for KB Financial Holdings, among others, the competition

was fierce with the participation of 18 advertisement
agencies in a bid that extended to a third round. However, it
was a runaway victory for Oricom, as it was highly evaluated
for having “unique, creative ideas that can deliver KB
Financial Holdings’ business philosophy in an earnest and
quality manner, not to mention numerous successful
corporate PR campaign experiences,” and selected as its
advertisement agency once again after four years.
Oricom’s Winning Streak Expected to Continue
Oricom’s advertisers span a wide range of areas, including
finance (KB Financial Holdings), fashion (Our Home, Amway),
home appliances (Kyowon Wells), car parts (Nexen Tire),
entertainment (Sports Toto) and chemical (Woongjin
Chemical). The achievements are attributable to the recent
launch of the new Vision IMC Idea Group in March, following
the representative system that created 12 professional and
autonomous entities. “We are having a promising start to
2014: the green lights include a series of great results of bid
presentations, the grand prize for the 22nd Outstanding
Advertisement Selected by Customers, and the positive
responses the IMC ideas received by advertisers,” said
President Ko Young-sub. “I can assure you that the winning
streak will continue as long as we provide total marketing
solutions that meet the expectations of advertisers.”
The Oricom IMC (Integrated Marketing Communication) Idea Group is an organic system that
first identifies the way customers move in advance instead of chasing after their changes;
and second, creates a “people story” by encouraging customers to take charge in
participating directly, and gaining and spreading experience, rather than creating a brand
story via ad messages or production methods in the framework of the four traditional media.

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction launched the Software Center on February 25 and
completed the groundwork for the comprehensive application of the information and
communication technology (ICT) to its business units. We met with Vice President Woohyong
Sohn, the head of the Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Software Center, who is busy
laying the foundation for ICT in line with the ICT trend and aligning the newly established
organization.
“I hope you aren't confused by ICT. Think of taking an e-learning class on your smartphone.
Simply put, ICT is the information technology (IT) we all know integrated with the
communications technology of the Internet or a smartphone,” Vice President Woohyong Sohn
explained.
In an era of big data, technology that helps collect and use huge volumes of data is emerging
as a new growth engine cross a wide range of areas. More companies are preparing to gain
ground by integrating ICT into their businesses and create new business opportunities.
A GE case was taken as an example as Sohn went on to explain how ICT was incorporated
into the business of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction. “ICT was often used to analyze
personnel information to create values, but it has been increasingly adopted by the
manufacturing sector recently. Global corporation GE coined the term 'Industrial Internet'
years ago to describe ICT applied to manufacturing, and has been reaping the benefits of
high-energy efficiency."
Driven to Achieve ICT Driven Power and Water Business
Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction embarked on ICT preparation initiatives to build a
data management system to collect, save and use the plant operating data last year.
Preparation initiatives include plant feedback analysis (PFA) to analyze the operation data
reflected in design improvement; remote monitoring service (RMS) to monitor plant operation
data from outside in real time, identify improvement points and propose them to customers;
and the development of optimizers and simulators to improve the performance of main
equipment such as boilers and turbines.
“When the groundwork for ICT is completed by successfully carrying out the ICT preparation
initiatives, we will be able to enhance the competitiveness of our existing plant business,
increasing the chances of winning projects and delivering greater customer satisfaction,”
Sohn said.
On March 20 and 24, more than 80 ICT-related personnel from each BG gathered for an ICT
workshop held at the Changwon head office and Seoul office of Doosan Heavy Industries &
Construction. During the workshop, Sohn said, “As ICT is a technology applied to a wide
range of businesses of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, raising awareness of ICT
among employees will also be an important initiative. Please keep in mind that
communication with employees on ICT is equally as important as the construction of a data
management system.” He also added, “To share the process of the ICT initiatives and ICT
trends, we plan to publish ICT newsletters and invite guest speakers to give lectures on ICT.
We are also developing a training program to nurture data scientists for the analysis of
internal data.”
The goal of the Software Center is to build the ICT foundation on which Doosan Heavy
Industries & Construction will enhance the overall competitiveness of its businesses and
create new business opportunities under the vision of an ICT Driven Power and Water
Business. “We look forward to seeing what the Software Center will bring in leading the
future competitiveness of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction,” Sohn said.
As ICT is a technology
applied to a wide range
of businesses of Doosan
Heavy Industries &
Construction, raising
awareness of ICT among
employees will also be
an important initiative.
Please keep in mind that
communication with
employees on ICT is
equally as important as

Doosan Brand Up Ⅰ
Article by Byung Min Lee (Campaign Planner, Oricom)
For Doosan to transform into a top-tier player in the infrastructure support business (ISB), it has to raise brand awareness in the
Korean and overseas markets. Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction won the grand prize for the “22nd Outstanding Advertisement
Selected by Customers” in recognition of the aesthetic images, business value of delivering “Technology that enhances the value of
Earth” in places that lack light and water, and heartwarming life stories that customers can empathize with in a series of corporate
PR campaigns over the last nine years.
How B2B Company
Received the Best
Advertisement Award
- Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction wins grand prize
for “22nd Outstanding Advertisement Selected by
Customers”
- Three rules of communication used in the “Technology
that enhances the value of Earth”campaign
With local elections coming up, many news agencies are
reporting about the elections. Candidates long for voters to pay
more attention to their abilities and messages. However, it is likely
that people, inundated by the overwhelming inflow of messages
from real-time news to spam, have shut their eyes and ears to
new messages. In this sense, conveying a new message doesn't
have an impact.
Among advertisement campaigns, corporate PR shares many
commonalities with election campaigns. Some are already
famous, some are not, and the main message mostly is about
major accomplishments and visions. The most difficult aspect is
that such advertisements that aim to promote the image of the
company seem irrelevant to the lives of average consumers,
unlike that of familiar brands or services. Moreover, it deals with
issues outside the region, making such corporate PR campaigns
even more difficult to empathize with.
On March 27, the “Technology that enhances the value of Earth”
campaign of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction won the
grand prize at the 22nd Outstanding Advertisement Selected by
Customers awards ceremony. This award is the only award given
to companies selected by consumers for the best campaigns. Out
of the more than 3,000 creative ads a year, how did consumers
come to focus on that of a B2B corporation, which seems

distant from their daily lives?
As it is not easy to communicate as we would like nowadays, it
is a good idea to refer to the three rules of communication used
by the Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction campaign.
Talk About a Mission Before Accomplishments
As for corporate PR and all other companies, performances and
visions are essential for Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction.
However, rather than boasting about its top-tier performance in
the global arena, it speaks of its mission first. Most are probably
familiar with the fact that the reason behind the explosive
popularity of Apple is not just its product, iPhone. Countless Apple
fans pledge their allegiance to the company because they agree
with Apple’s mission: “Think Different.” Products are mere
reflections of the mission. As the marketing maxim goes, “From
reason comes judgment, and from emotion comes action.” If
consumers did not agree with Apple’s mission, its product would
not have been the subject of passion, but rather the subject of

Sungju Lee (second from right) of Oricom speaks to the children featured in the ad.
judgment. Returning to the story of Doosan Heavy Industries &
Construction, it is promoting the happiness of humanity and value
of livelihoods with light and water. In short, these technologies
will be “Technology that enhances the value of Earth.” Doosan
Heavy Industries & Construction is conducting campaigns that
move people emotionally with its mission that targets a 92%
approval rating by the average consumer.
Genuineness Before Rhetoric
“Earth is a beautiful planet, but not to all 7 billion people
around the world. To some, it is a planet of hunger, to others, a
planet of darkness…We reach into places with no light and
water and fill them in with our technology.”
The message of this campaign tells the mission as it is. There is
no glamorization. This draws the viewers’ attention and naturally
allows them to enjoy the story. The video and display have also
focused on showing the mission as it is. The models in this
campaign are all actual habitants of the local setting. The story

of their simple, yet happy lives made possible through light and
water naturally allows viewers to focus on the story and in
return, look inward.
This idea has been embedded in Doosan Heavy Industries &
Construction’s campaigns over the last nine years. If a person or
company continuously changes messages and voices, it’s
difficult for their messages to appear genuine enough to touch
the hearts of viewers.
Novelty Before Normality
What is needed to prevent a principal’s valuable lecture from
becoming a boring old lecture? Adding novelty that can win
back students’ attention would be most effective. Just as the
saying “form determines content” goes, novelty not only attracts
attention, but also helps convey the message more strongly.
This campaign combines the conventional factors of power and
water, and plays out a unique 60-second storytelling campaign
with newness in scale and formation. This video has a unique
vibe, as it uses skip-bleach processing (the silver in the film is
left in the print, “skipping” the bleach step to increase contrast
and decrease saturation) for the toned-down and polished
image with subdued yet high-contrast colors. The scene with the
water spraying down was filmed with a Phantom high-speed
camera (1,000 frames per second, while ordinary cameras film
30 frames per second), a camera as unique as its name, to
create an artistic and fascinating image of water to capture the
hearts of viewers.
The Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction campaign tells a
story of how to add value to our shared home, Earth, and
focuses on a company standing in the center of it all. The story
was expressed in a genuine and novel way to win the attention
and empathy of consumers and its value was once again
reaffirmed by the grand prize for the “Outstanding
Advertisement Selected by Customers.”
In this era of multiple communication channels but weaker
communicability, why not refer to the campaign technique and
communication methods of Doosan Heavy Industries &
Construction to tell a story that can reopen people’s ears and
capture their hearts?

Limitless Aspiration Toward
Improvement Brings
Advancement
- Tenacity, dedication and pride in practicing the Doosan Way
The Doosan Way is practiced by Doosan people in many business venues across
the world, leaving a strong impression with their unique tenacity, dedication and
pride. A lot of people, even those in different business sectors, say, “I want to
learn the mindset of Doosan People.” In this issue, we introduce how the Doosan
Way was practiced in diverse ways: 1) The Doosan Infracore Sales Division
Logistics Division Shipment Unit video-recorded, analyzed and improved the
logistics process; 2) Taegyun Kim, Manager of Doosan Engineering & Construction
Architectural Design Team, contributed to the revision of standards for the
installation of smoke control systems by filing a complaint; and 3) A client sent a
thank you letter to the Doosan Engine Operation Team for listening closely to the
client’s requests and showing great teamwork during a sea trial. Let’s find out
more about how the practice of the Doosan Way made Doosan even stronger.
“Problems in Parts Shipment Found
through Video-recording!”
- Doosan Infracore Sales Division Logistics Team Shipment
Unit Eliminates Bottleneck in the Process
Article by Jongbeom Woo (Doosan Infracore)
The Doosan Infracore Sales Division Logistics Team Shipment
Unit at Ansan Parts Center. The team members have worked
together at the parts center since the deployment of Enterprise
Resource Planning (ERP) in 2008, so they can practically read
each other’s minds and boast family-like team work. The task
of shipping parts is composed of five steps: ▶Bring a folded
box ▶Check the items and quantities of parts ▶Scan barcode
labels using a PDA and print and attach shipment labels
▶Print export certificates using a computer ▶Ship box after
banding.
Work Process is Videotaped to Find Bottleneck
After more than five years of shipping parts, they started
experiencing some issues. The time spent waiting in front of
the computer was getting longer and naturally delayed the
whole process. The team members in the Shipment Unit
questioned what was causing this.
So, they decided to record the work process and traffic line
from above, an idea pitched by Technical Staff Daekyu Cha. The
video clearly showed what was causing the bottleneck. They
could easily see the problem by measuring the time spent at
each step of the process. Employees were required to type in

information seven times to print export certificates, which
accounts for 58 seconds out of the 114 seconds in the total
process. As a member of the team was tied to the computer for
a long time, other members had no choice but to wait in line.
As the bottleneck was discovered, all members of the Shipment
Unit put their heads together to address the bottleneck
problem. They were determined to work together to find a
breakthrough. Starting something new was difficult, but they all
believed that once the issue was addressed, they would be
able to work more effectively in the end.
Entering in information to print export certificates required too

much time. In finding ways to streamline the process, Cha took
the approach of not using a computer altogether. Then, a
personal digital assistant (PDA), which is used to print
shipment labels, caught his eye. It was a device all the team
members had. He thought it would be more efficient to use a
PDA to print the export certificates and began researching ways
to lean the ERP system by doing PC-based tasks on PDAs. They
struggled to find an answer while exchanging ideas with the
Process Innovation (PI) team and Doosan Corporation
Information Communications BU.“It would be too difficult,”“It is
impossible,” and “Would this work?”
Believing in a Better Way to Do Things
The results were much better than expected. Now, the
information required to print export certificates is automatically
transferred by scanning the barcodes with PDAs. After
addressing the bottleneck problem, they recorded the entire
process again, which was reduced to 45 seconds. Moreover, as
shipment labels and export certificates are now simultaneously
printed, the traffic line has been significantly reduced and work
efficiency enhanced.
In recognition of their improvement activities, the Doosan
Infracore Sales Division Logistics Team Shipment Unit received
an innovation award at the B.o.B (Best of Best) Awards
Ceremony. Cha, a theme leader of the Shipment Unit, said, “It
facilitated the shipment process and enhanced productivity at
Doosan factories worldwide. I carried on with the belief that
there must be a better way, which in return enhanced the
fundamental competitiveness of Doosan.”

More Thrilling Than a Homerun
- Taegyun Kim, Manager of Doosan Engineering &
Construction’s Architectural Design Team, asked
“WHY” and contributed to the revision of standards
for smoke control systems
Article by Jinhee Kwon (Doosan Engineering & Construction)
When a fire breaks out, the biggest risk factor is smoke, which can
cause suffocation. Taegyun Kim, Manager of the Doosan
Engineering & Construction Architectural Design Team, raised an
issue with the odd standards for smoke control systems and
contributed to a revision of the standards for smoke control
systems by filing a government complaint. Now, smoke control
systems can be installed in a more effective manner at the site.
A smoke control system is a type of fire extinguishing system,
which senses smoke at the initial stage of a fire, propels smoke
out of the building and prevents smoke from spreading to
evacuation routes to help residents safely evaluate.
While reviewing design documents for the construction of Doosan
We’ve the Zenith in Ilsan, Korea, Manager Taegyun Kim questioned
why a smoke control system is needed for the stores on the first
to third floors of a building adjacent to a busy street. People
would easily evacuate when a fire breaks out. However, both
constructors and construction designers have never questioned
why and complied with the fire safety regulations up until now.
According to the previous standards, commercial and sales
facilities with a floor area greater than 1,000m2 located on
basement floors or floors without windows were required to install
smoke control systems. Manager Kim, however, thought smoke
control systems would serve no purpose if they are installed on
ground floors or even in small stores on the first
floor, only because one facility on the basement
floor needs a smoke control system. Therefore,
he filed a complaint, calling for the revision of
the standards that use more exact terminologies,
and persistently urged the government to take
action. As online complaints along with official
documents needed to be submitted for a fire
safety law to take
Manager Taegyun Kim

standards.
He contributed to a

effect, he also submitted official documents drafted by a
construction designer. By engaging a construction designer, a
constructor can secure more trust and objectivity. If a constructor
requests a revision of the standards alone, it may be viewed as a
business tactic to reduce costs. Despite all efforts, the revision
didn’t happen as quickly as they’d hoped. A little over a month
after the complaint was filed, a revision bill was announced, but
somehow no news was heard afterward. Generally, a law is revised
one or two months after the pre-announcement of the legislation,
but it wasn’t the case this time. They got tired of waiting, so they
contacted the National Emergency Management Agency from time
to time and visited the Legislation Information Center website
every week to check official newsletters and legislation.
Effective Smoke Control Systems and Cost Reduction
After seven months of waiting, he was looking through the
Legislation Information Center website as always and came across
news about the revised standards. He finally found what he was
looking for: “If the total floor area of commercial and sales
facilities located on basement floors or floors without windows is
greater than 1000m2, a smoke control system must be installed.”
It was a drastic change from the previous standards, which
stipulated, “If a smoke control system is installed for a facility on
basement floors or floors without windows, the commercial and
sales facilities (if over 1,000m2) on the entire floors of the building
must have smoke control systems installed.”
This case is never about compromising safety by reducing smoke
control systems, but more about minimizing unnecessary
installations and using resources more efficiently. It had positive
ripple effects across the whole industry, including construction
designers and constructors. Doosan Engineering & Construction,
among others, was able to reduce costs on large-scale
construction sites; including Doosan We’ve G-Well City and the
restructuring of Haeundae AID, according to the revised standards.
Manager Kim said, “As an engineer, I feel a strong sense of
responsibility to help change unreasonable standards for
construction design by setting higher goals with limitless
aspiration and tenacity.”

“During a Sea Trial, You Breathe Life into
a Marine Engine”
- A shipowner sent a thank you letter to the Doosan Engine Commissioning Team for
listening closely to client’s requests and showing great teamwork during a sea trial.
Article by Yeon Jeong Kim (Doosan Engine), Photo by Hyungjung Lee (Doosan Engine)
It takes a lot of effort by a great number of people to produce
one engine, from design to purchasing to assembly to trial test.
The last stage after an engine is fully assembled at the site is
called commissioning.
In this stage, an engine is tested to check whether it is
operating as intended. It is the moment when all the efforts of
the employees bear fruit, it is also known as the moment of
flower in manufacturing.
Engine commissioning is conducted three times: ▲A shop test
after assembly on the shop floor ▲A basin trial for the engine
mounted on the vessel after delivery to a shipbuilder ▲A sea
trial.
Thank You Letter From Ship Owner
One day, Dong Yeol Yang, Technical Assistant Manager of the
Doosan Engine Operation Team, received a letter from a ship
owner.
It was from C. Mahendran expressing gratitude for providing
service during the sea trial of the Kota Cempaka, a vessel
owned by Singaporean shipping company, PIL. In November
2013, Manager Yang and the personnel in charge of sea trials
participated in the “Cylinder Cut Out System Test” for the Kota
Cempaka. The test is designed to assess how many fuel pumps
it can operate in an emergency situation.
For the test, they blocked fuel injections from fuel pumps of
even or odd numbered cylinders and checked whether the
engines were operating safely in the RPM mode. While they
expected half the cylinders to work, all the cylinders were
operating. So, they could not carry out the test.
Based on knowhow accumulated over seven years, Manager
Yang started an inspection to find the problem. While closely
inspecting the engine, he found a problem in the solenoid
valve, which controls fuel injection.
The electric cords near the oil pump, which match each valve
and controlled cylinders, were twisted. He fixed the problem
immediately and was able to proceed with the test.
The ship owner was deeply impressed that Yang stayed up for
three days and four nights to perform sea trials and perfectly

meet all the requests made by the ship owner. Accordingly, the
ship owner emailed him a thank you letter and a request that
Manager Yang and the team handle a sea trial of the next
vessel, Kota Cepat.
Thrill of Commissioning
Manager Yang remembered the feeling as follows: “To be
honest, I never expected to receive a letter from the Kota
Cempaka. All I did was listen to what they said and fulfill their
requests.
I just did my job, performing a trial test, so I felt even more
grateful to the ship owner who expressed his gratification in
this letter. I wasn’t the only person there. The whole Trial Test
Team, including Assistant Manager Ho Chul Kim and Technical
Manager Sun Bae Jeon, did it together.
Thanks to the two veterans who were equipped with
professional knowledge of sea trials, we were able to carry out
the tasks promptly and perfectly.”
Manager Yang describes performing a trial test as breathing life
into a marine engine. He is thrilled when an engine he
assembled makes the engine sound for the first time.

A Doosan Way training session takes place in Waterloo, Belgium.
DICE EMEA Practices Doosan
Way with Training, Contests
and More
In the last year, DICE EMEA management and HR have taken
multiple actions to embed the Doosan Way into the organization.
The Doosan Way@Work methodology and training were created,
the Doosan Way Contest was launched, the Doosan Way Awards
will be presented at the end of April, and some tangible
reminders (agenda, desk calendar and posters) were produced
and distributed to employees across the region.
The DICE EMEA Marketing team
developed a reusable Doosan Waythemed agenda for EMEA
employees.
DoosanWay@Work Training
DICE EMEA’s first Doosan Way@Work action-based training took
place in September 2013 in Waterloo, Belgium. DICE EMEA
President Martin Knoetgen opened the training by emphasizing
the importance of embracing the Doosan Way in daily work,
encouraging the participants to learn and thanking everyone for
taking the opportunity to grow.
To develop the Doosan Way@Work methodology, DICE EMEA
blended Total Quality Management (TQM), Lean and other
process improvement methodologies into one comprehensive
package to provide a common language for employees to use
in their work. This training will become the standard for all
DICE EMEA employees in the future.
On top of the training aspect, Doosan Way@Work also focuses
on real-life projects aiming at practicing the newly acquired
skills and improving processes and performance of the region.
“The methodology is excellent and should be spread all over
the company,” says Cecile Godin, Parts SIOP Manager in
Waterloo. “Everybody can learn it, everybody can understand it,
it is easy, and it is a good start if you need a structure to base
yourself on.”
As of March 2014, four Doosan Way@Work trainings have been
completed, with a total of 105 people trained in Waterloo,
Belgium, and Prague, Czech Republic. The target is to train all

site will be announced during the Doosan Way awards
ceremony at the end of April.
Jean-Paul De Bartolo, DICE EMEA Talent Management Leader,
commented, “This is an excellent opportunity for our employees
to reflect on how the Doosan Way traits are expressed around
them, how their colleagues’ behaviors reflect the traits, and
how the traits are shown in daily activities. It also helps in
visualizing and personalizing each trait.”
Doosan Way Contest
The Doosan Way Contest is the least time consuming but the
most fun activity to embed the Doosan Way into the DICE EMEA
organization. The concept was conceived by a group of
employees in Waterloo with the purpose of allowing employees
to explore and express the Doosan Way principles via less
formal multimedia tools while working as a team.
For the first challenge of the contest, which was to explain
Inhwa in a poster format, four EMEA sites participated:
Waterloo, Frameries, Belgium; Dobris, Czech Republic; and
Lyon, France (Montabert). Each site presented one poster, with
the winners being decided by the DICE Communication Team.
The winner was the Frameries location.
The main selection criteria included the best illustration of
Inhwa , creativity and the element of fun. The winning team
received a prize and their output was shared through the EMEA
Doosan Way newsletter and posters in local sites. Spare Parts
Operations Team Leader Cecile Warrot, who helped coordinate
the contest entry for Frameries, said, “I believe this challenge
allowed people to get to know each other and to see how
Inhwa is expressed in Frameries.”
The second challenge was announced in March: Reflect the
core value of Open Communication in a comic strip. The results
of the contest will be available in April.
Doosan Way Awards
In February, DICE EMEA employees had an opportunity to
recognize their colleagues for demonstrating the Traits of
Doosan People. Employees completed the EMEA Doosan Way
survey, in which they nominated colleagues that best represent
each trait. The winners who collected the most votes from each
Tangible Doosan Way Reminders
In 2013, DICE EMEA looked for some tangible ways to focus on
the Doosan Way and create materials of everyday use that
would remind employees of the Doosan Way principles. So, the
local EMEA Marketing Team produced a Doosan Way agenda,
desk calendar and canvas poster.
The Doosan Way desk calendar includes a page with stickers to
mark Doosan Way-related events on the calendars. The agenda
contains the list of core values along with some quotes, cartoons
and images, in addition to bank holidays for EMEA’s key locations
and all public holidays for Belgium, France, Czech Republic and
Ireland. Much of the agenda is dedicated to space for notes.
To optimize resources, DICE EMEA will use the agenda cover for
the next three years. In 2015 and 2016, the region will only print
new notebooks to be inserted into the existing covers.
The Doosan Way is always visible
with this handy desk calendar
developed by the DICE EMEA
Marketing team.

- Takes great pride in his work, seeing customers and dealers smile
There are both glamorous urban areas and isolated country areas in China, a country
with the third or fourth largest surface area in the world. The April issue of Doosan
introduces Qinlong Yu of DICC (Doosan Infracore China Co., Ltd) who provided repair
and technical support for construction equipment in the Qinghai region, located near
the Tibetan plateau, for six months.

There are many areas 4000m above sea level in the Qinghai region. The sign in the back of Qinlong Yu indicates 4,797m.
In China, there are famous high
plateaus. A case in point is the Tibetan
plateau in western China. The Qinghai
region located near Tibet is also at such
a high elevation that some people
suffer from altitude sickness. Altitude
sickness usually involves headaches,
car sickness and a ringing in the ears.
In more serious cases, however, a
person may experience loss of appetite,
nausea, a feeling of suffocation,
shortness of breath, blue lips and even
death. Woldal is a new dealer based on
the plateau in Qinghai, so it is
designated as a dealer that requires
special care and support by the Product
Support & Aftermarket Team. For six
months from February to August 2013, I
engaged in technical support activities
with two of my colleagues.

conditions. Working in a place called
Muli, among others, is even tougher. At
the request of our client to repair the
DH500 excavator in the Muli Coal Mine
in March 2012, I traveled 600km. The
first 400km was bearable, as it took
only five hours, but the remaining
200km took us a whopping six hours
due to poor road conditions. When we
arrived at the site, it was already 2 a.m.
Even Uncooked Instant Noodle is Good
in Fulfilling the Task
When we arrived at the site, quality
accommodations were nowhere to be
found. There was only a building
resembling a dormitory. After spending
11 hours on the bumpy road, all we
wanted to do was sleep. The company
cafeteria inside the mine was already
closed, and there were no restaurants
nearby. We ended up relieving our
hunger with uncooked instant noodles,
which boils at 70°C due to the low air
pressure at high altitudes.

During our stay, temperatures during
the day were below -32°C, so you can
imagine how cold it gets. Despite the
tough environment, we started the
repair work. The first case was pretty
simple, as it was a minor malfunction
when the engine started, but the
second problem required replacement
parts. While disassembling the pipe, my
hands were so cold they went numb
and I accidentally bumped my hand on
the equipment. I also had difficulty
breathing due to the high elevation, so
I had to take a break in between the
work. After a week, we finally completed
our task and went back to the hotel in
Xining, the capital of Qinghai province.
I immediately took a hot bath. I felt
true happiness at that moment.
The AS vehicle drives through snow to meet customers.
There are many times when we are out
in a tough atmosphere to repair
equipment. Even though conditions are
tough, I take great pride in my work,
seeing customers and dealers smile and
show appreciation.
“It’s tough, but we are happy with our
job.”
Because working in PS requires longterm overseas trips, we can’t spend
much time with our families. I feel
especially indebted to my wife. At the
same time, the one who cheers me the
most is my wife. She is understanding
and supportive of my job. Also, when I
come back from overseas business
trips, PS & AM leaders show concern
about us and try to solve any difficulties
we may have. Sometimes, they try to
pass down their work knowhow and
lifestyle tips they gained from
experience. Their care helps me build a
great sense of pride.
Go PS! Go Doosan!
The PS personnel walk up the mountain to
repair equipment. The road is not paved,
so they have to walk.

Who is the Strongest Man at Doosan?
- Doosan S̆koda Power’s Petr Lahoda, a silver medalist of the 2013 World Masters
Powerlifting* Championship
One of the remarkable people of Doosan surely is Petr Lahoda, who in his free time
pursues an unconventional hobby in which he has reached some excellent results on
a global scale.
*What is Powerlifting? Powerlifting is similar to
weightlifting, as it involves lifting a barbell, but
barbells are lifted in a different way. Powerlifting
consists of three events. The first involves
squatting with a loaded bar resting on the lifter’s
shoulders, called “squat.” For the second, “bench
press,” the loaded bar is taken while the lifter
rests on a bench, and the last one is “deadlift.” In
each event, the lifter takes three attempts and the
greatest lifted weight in a given discipline is
always entered in the general result.

team currently focus on cutting costs
relating to industrial steam turbines
through the Design to Cost method and in
collaboration with the commodity purchase
department on quality improvement and
extension of supply offers. He divides his
free time between his family (his wife,
Simona, and 6-year-old daughter Anic̆ka)
and his passion – powerlifting.
He started playing basketball as a student
and continued to play until he was about
16. At age 18, he started working out and
competed in bodybuilding until 1994. In
1995, a friend suggested that he should
try to enter the South Moravia
Championship in Powerlifting, and he
placed second in his weight category. That
motivated him to go on, and he started
competing in powerlifting. In 2001, he
stopped competing and did leisure cycling
for another 10 years. Then in 2011 he
returned to powerlifting – this time already
in the Masters category up to 120kg.
He tries to practice four times a week. His
diet is practically unrestricted. During his
pre-competition preparation, he eats great
amounts of protein divided into four
meals a day. Ideal is the combination of
beef and chicken, and some food
supplements.
Participating in the World Championship in
Pilsen, Czech Republic
In 2011, he gained a silver medal at the
Czech Republic Bench Press
Championship, and in 2012, he won two
gold medals in two categories - one at
the Czech Republic Powerlifting
Championship and the other at the Czech
Republic Bench Press Championship. In
addition, he placed seventh on two
occasions at the European Championship,
where he lifted 765kg in total.
His dream was to participate in the
World Championship, which came true
on September 28, 2013, when he won a
silver medal for lifting 255kg in bench
press and reached an overall fifth place
for 820kg in powerlifting. In this way he
also helped the Czech team reach third
place in the nation’s competition (the
U.S. won and Canada placed second).
He said, “It was great to represent the
Czech Republic and even gain a medal.
The atmosphere at the World
Championship is something quite
different compared to the domestic
competition. It is really demanding in
terms of concentration and mental
resilience. There, I competed with
athletes who I had only read about until
then; and even if you are in really good
shape, things may not always turn out in
your favor. It is said about this sport that
half of the performance is in your mind.”
In 2014, he would like to get back to the
lower weight category. “I have competed
in the category up to 120kg until now
and I am considering a transfer to the
category up to 105kg. And then, if I am
healthy and nominated for the national
team, I would like to participate in the
European Championship, and, if possible,
in the World Championship in the
Masters Powerlifting, too, which will be
held in Pilsen this time.”
Petr may possibly be the strongest
man within Doosan. For that matter,
you can test your strength against him
at the competition to be held in Pilsen
on July 12.

Self-Improvement
Nurturing Both Technician Specialists
and Fundamental Competitiveness
- Doosan Infracore Promotes Self-improvement Through Technician Specialist
Training Program
“I can dream every day thanks to the
Technician Specialist Training Program!”
Jooho Kim, Junior Foreman of Infracore
Analysis & Measurement, has devoted
himself to studying recently. Even though
he has been involved in the development
of construction equipment for 30 years,
he always felt something was missing, as
he is not certified as a master technician.
He felt it was something he should have.
However, things have changed. Thanks to
Doosan Infracore’s Technician Specialist
Training Program, he can now pursue his
dream of obtaining certification. As he
spends a lot of time with his colleagues
in the study club, he became not only
more upbeat, but also more passionate
and confident in carrying out his tasks.
Doosan Infracore’s proposed vision for the
technical staff is “becoming the best
specialist in your own field.” Technicians
at all level—from novices to certified
masters—are eligible to receive support
to become the best specialist in their
fields. The program focuses on three
areas: ▲Develop a system to nurture
technician specialists ▲Support the
technical staff to obtain certifications
▲Create a self-directed learning culture.
As for the highly skilled technicians, group
coaching or lectures by guest masters are
offered to help them become masters.
Technicians who strive to obtain
certifications are encouraged and provided
with more grants.
The company also provides financial
support to technician study groups to
create a self-directed studying
atmosphere. Currently, there are 25 clubs.
General Manager Youngjun Bak of the
Infracore Shop-Floor HRD Team said,
“Through the Technician Specialist Training
Program, we hope to establish a culture
where hard-working technicians on the
shop floor are recognized and respected. I
believe Doosan Infracore will be able to
enhance its fundamental competitiveness
by nurturing the talented technicians.”
The five technicians pose with 32 certificates, the
fruits of their hard work. From left: Junior Foreman

Q. What do you emphasize the most when guiding the technical staff?
A. Setting a goal for oneself should top the list. Generally, people work only because they

in the Doosan Way are all I do.

Our Doosan Talent
Lin Hong, Assistant Manager of Doosan Corporation Electro-Materials BG Changshu Corporation Technology Team
Dreaming of Becoming a Facilities
Expert in Changshu Factory
- Roller skates as a hobby, but also participates in competitions
Article by Zev Lee, Manager (Doosan Corporation Electro-Materials BG Global Support Team)
Doosan Corporation Electro-Materials
BG’s Changshu Factory, China, was
established in June 2011, as the one and
only overseas manufacturing entity.
Assistant Manager Lin Hong has served
in the Facilities Division of the
Technology Team, the heart of a
manufacturing factory, since he joined
Doosan in September 2011. In the
beginning, the facilities division had
tough times in manufacturing, as it was
stuck with the dilapidated facilities of a
Taiwanese company, which was acquired
by Doosan when installing new
equipment at the initial stage of the
construction. Again and again, he
worked until dawn, fixing the facilities
on top of the busy day-to-day
operations.
The tasks may be demanding, but he is
passionate enough to put a smile on his
face for his colleagues at all times. His
positive attitude spreads positive vibes
to his colleagues as well.

Doosan Vina, Vietnam
“Labor of Love” 43 Married
Couples at Work
- Married couples at Doosan Vina, Vietnam
Article by Dale Gerstenslager (Public Relation Team, Doosan Vina)
Some of the 43 married couples at Doosan Vina gather outside the Main Office at the company’s Quang Ngai industrial
complex.
What do you think it would be like if
both you and your spouse worked for
the same company? Would it nurture the
relationship or be too much of a good
thing? To answer this question, we
explored the issue with some of the 43
married couples at Doosan Vina, who
represent 4% of our workforce.
My Wife is Both a Colleague and Friend
“Dynamite” is a popular way of saying
how great something is. When you take
the first names of our first married
couple, Tran Khac Tuyen of OE and his
wife Nguyen Thi Tam from Accounting,
you get “TNT,” which is, as they say,
“Dynamite!”
Tuyen has worked at Doosan Vina for
almost five years and Tam will celebrate
four years in September. They met at a
friend’s wedding when he grabbed the
seat next to her at the reception, a
position he has happily continued to
occupy at all parties since. When we
asked Tuyen whether working together
was good or bad, he said, “Our

2006 birthday party they first
met. Truong came to DV in May 2008
and Trang followed in 2010. The couple
married in 2012 and a daughter joined
them in 2013. “Working at the same
company allows us more family time
and gives us a better understanding of
what the other is experiencing, which
makes things smoother,” said Trang.
Cupid Must Have Been Hiding in the
Boiler Shop
Our final couple is Pham Thanh Hung and
Nguyen Thi Thuy, both of whom work in
the Boiler Shop and met here at the
company. Thuy was on a Danang
University internship and came to
Doosan Vina expecting to gain some
experience, but not necessarily one that
would change her life. “I was assigned
to the Boiler Shop, and the moment I
laid eyes on Hung, my heart skipped a
beat; it was love at first sight. Cupid
must have been hiding behind one of
the machines; it was like someone shot
me with an arrow. Working here allows us
more time together, so I think it is a good
lifestyle and I heartily recommend it,” said
Thuy.
The next chapter in this story is still
waiting to be written and will happen
when the first offspring from one of
these 43 couples joins Doosan Vina as a
second generation employee and
continues the tradition started by their
parents!

Susanna Tran, Staff Accountant for DIA
Dreaming of Her Own Gallery,
DIA’s Resident Artist Relaxes
Through Artwork
Article by Megan Fraase (Communication Specialist, DICE)
Susanna Tran dreams of one day filling a
gallery with her many works of art, but
for now, her art is just a relaxing hobby.
Susanna is a Staff Accountant for
Doosan Infracore America (DIA) Machine
Tools in Suwanee, Georgia, USA, and has
been with the company since October
2011. Originally from Hong Kong, China,
Susanna moved to the U.S. with her
family as a teenager and has lived there
ever since.
Artistic Family Leads to Double Major in
Graphic Design and Accounting
As a college student in Jacksonville,
Florida, USA, Susanna knew there
weren’t many opportunities for artists,
so she decided to double-major in
accounting and graphic design. “My
hobby is to do traditional art, but I also
needed to make a living,” she says.
“When I was taking all those accounting
classes, I really enjoyed doing art,
Susanna is talented not only in drawing but also in
sculpture. Here are various pieces of Susanna’s art.
because it didn’t feel like I was doing an
assignment. It felt like I was relaxing.”
She finished both of her majors in four
and a half years and later earned an
MBA (Master of Business Administration).
Although she does a wide range of art,
including sculpture, charcoal drawing
and painting, Susanna enjoys doing
colored pencil drawings the best. “I
really like colored pencils, because they
are easy to handle and I can add many
colors to my drawings,” she
says. “I really enjoy shading
and making things look real
through the use of color.”
Susanna’s love of art stems
from her childhood. Her father,
mother and sister all have
artistic talent in various areas.
“My father worked in the textile
industry and had some talent in

art, and my mom likes to make
necklaces and bracelets,” she says. As a
child, her drawings covered the family
refrigerator, and as a high school
student, she’d draw portraits of each of
her teachers to give them at the end of
the semester. She also won multiple
awards at art shows in high school,
including two times as “Best in Show”
winner.
Satisfaction Comes With Finishing a
Piece
Susanna’s husband, David, is also an art
enthusiast and the two often spend time
drawing, sometimes collaborating on
pieces. “If we have a chance to go to
the beach, we sit there and draw and
it’s really, really fun,” she says. “He
doesn’t really like to color in his
drawings, so I sometimes color his
work.” She also enjoys making art for
her church and for special occasions,
such as baby showers* and bachelorette
parties.
Susanna and her husband mostly do
their artwork at their home in the Atlanta
area, but they plan to someday add a
dedicated studio space in their
basement. And, although her dream of
opening a gallery hasn’t yet come true,
Susanna jumps at the chance to share
her art with others whenever she gets
the chance. “On my wedding day, my
husband and I had a little gallery right
next to our reception area for people to
look at our art,” she says. “We also
display all our drawings around the
house, so when guests come over we
show them off.”
She enjoys creating things because of
the satisfaction that comes along with
finishing something. “It’s also really
stress-free when I do art,” she says. “I
sit there and really relax my mind.
Otherwise, I’m the type of person who
likes to talk and be out doing things.
When I do art, I’m calm and focused.”

certification of a
new construction
technique.
There is a rising technology in the construction industry. The
technology, with a rather long name, is called the DownwardConstruction Method, which supports sheathing using double
steel beams and slabs mounted on temporary steel columns
and steel brackets. The best thing about the technology is
that it enables the innovation that construction businesses
strive to achieve: environmentally friendliness, safety, space
efficiency, construction period reduction and cost reduction.
More recently, it received a new construction technique
certification (No. 727) from the Korea Ministry of Land,
Infrastructure and Transport. At the center of the new
technology development, which is praised by many
construction experts, was Doosan, standing tall and proud.
Joint Effort to Address Challenges of Construction Projects in
Urban Areas
The Doosan Engineering & Construction Institute of
Technology and the Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction
EPC BG worked jointly with Baro ConKey, Samoo Architects &
Engineers, Hanwha Engineering & Construction, and Lotte
Engineering & Construction to develop the new technology.
When building an underground structure, in general, columns
for a steel-framed reinforced concrete structure (SRC) are first
installed. In the case of the new technology, however, the
process goes as follows: ▲Temporarily install steel columns
and steel beams ▲Pour concrete and leave it to harden (or
cure) ▲Support sheathing* with the cured concrete (slab). As
most construction work in urban areas is carried out in
narrow spaces in densely populated areas, applying the
method, which serves both as a frame and sheathing,
increases space efficiency, reduces the construction period
and helps cut costs. Also, the technology addresses
environment issues by controlling scattering dust particles
and noise—chronic problems of urban construction—and
enhances safety by preventing the risk of collapse of
sheathing construction.
No Compromise When It Comes to Work
Hyewon Kim, General Manager of the Doosan Engineering &
Construction Institute of Technology, contributed a lot in

making the new technology possible. The process, however,
was riddled with worries and concerns: “How do we secure
the safety of the temporary columns that support the
structure during construction?” “Is it be possible to extract
the temporary columns without any issues?” and more
importantly, “What if there are ground deformations or
fractures when extracting the temporary columns?” There
seemed to be only one solution: Carry out a thorough
structural review by applying variables, such as a load, in
diverse construction environments to find possible errors in
the formula. Then, test it over and over to check for problems
in actual practice. Their persistent efforts culminated in a new
technique certification.
Right after graduating from university in 1993, she started her
career in structural engineering, supporting construction sites,
which continues now. In the beginning, she did not have
much knowledge and asked her boss many questions, but
she became an expert in her field thanks to the guidance of
senior engineers and experience gained over the years. She
was also influenced by senior engineers who always answered
her questions. It is for this reason that she’s open to
questions from colleagues, even during her breaks. Naturally,
her colleagues highly rate her. However, when it comes to her
own work, she becomes more meticulous and punctual. She
said, “If technical support is not provided on time, it may not
only delay the construction schedule, but also cause problems
in construction work, jeopardizing our credentials. That is why
mistakes and errors at work should never be acceptable.” It

was a short answer, but it’s enough to reveal the secret
behind her growth in the profession she’s pursued during the
last 20 years.
General Manager Kim married a classmate in college right
after joining the company, and has two sons. She said she
received a lot of help from her husband, but knowing raising
children is never an easy task, we asked her how she
managed to keep a good work-life balance. “It was not that
difficult, because boys are supposed to be tough, right?” she
joked. She strictly sticks to the following principle: Forget
about home once you are at work. When it comes to her
children, she emphasizes raising them to become wellrounded people who are considerate to others, rather than
receive perfect scores. As she hoped, her two sons have
become independent, diligent college and high school
students.
It seems like she caught two rabbits—career and children—
alright, but she still thinks there is room for improvement.
When she worked as an assistant general manager, she
noticed that people on construction sites worked under
extreme pressure and responsibility in terms of process,
quality and cost; and started hoping her contribution would
make their jobs easier. Maybe her wish came true. People
working at many construction sites expressed satisfaction
with the technical support provided by General Manager Kim.
As a case in point, the new certified construction method
applied to the construction of a public parking lot near
Tanhyeon Sataion, Gyeonggi Province, Korea, successfully
reduced construction costs and completed construction. In
closing, she said, “I wish to do a good job as an engineer
who can adjust the opinions of an owner, designer and
constructor.”

Dobris uses these boards to complete Kaizen workshops—or quick win workshops—that result
in process improvements.
Opened in 2007, the Bobcat manufacturing plant in Dobris was
designed to cater to EMEA regional needs, but in 2013, nearly
40% of its total annual production was exported to other
regions. Roughly 60% of all machines produced in Dobris are
loaders—primarily skid-steer loaders.
2
The plant covers 20,000m and employs 439 people, more than
half of whom are directly involved in production. In addition,
145 employees work at the nearby Design Center. Bobcat®
products currently manufactured in Dobris include the S100,
S450, S510, S530, S550, S570, S590 skid-steer loaders, the
T110 compact track loader, the E08, E10, E14, E16, E25 and E26
mini-excavator models and a range of attachments including
buckets and backhoes.
TQM Activities to Fulfill Plant Visions and Core Values
Total Quality Management (TQM) is a management system for
the realization of Dobris’s TQM implementation plan and for the
fulfilment of its manufacturing plant vision and core values.
TQM is represented by principles, practices and tools to create
precise customer value – goods and services with higher
quality. TQM in Dobris supports the company’s value streams
through TQM tools for having the best Safety, Quality, Delivery
and Cost.
In Dobris, TQM is represented by four main activities: Bobcat
Production System (BPS), Building Excellence with Small Teams
(BEST), Six Sigma and Design for Customer.
A good example of the Bobcat Production System – a
manufacturing philosophy which creates a common structure
for improvement throughout the organization – is a Kaizen
(quick win workshop) that focused on the rebalance of the
loader assembly line and increased productivity. “We improved
direct productivity from 83% to 93% and were able to eliminate
waste like waiting, errors, inefficiency moving during the
assembly process and more,” says Dobroslav Rak, Vice
President Engineering, DICE EMEA.
As far as Building Excellence with Small Teams goes, a real
example from the Dobris factory floor best illustrates this
concept. A team had an issue with a paint leak in the
machining area on undercarriage PHX (a platform-related
project name). The team described the problem, set up a
contingency plan and followed the basic steps: Root cause
analysis, collect and measure data, visualize the data to better
understand the full picture, prepare the IAROD, evaluate the
solution and describe the final result.
Six Sigma is a structured and disciplined, data-driven process
for improving business performance. “It’s all about improving
the bottom line – it costs less to do it right the first time,” Rak
says. In Dobris, the Six Sigma process was reinstated in 2013.
Seven Green Belts were nominated based on the Oobeya
model** and were trained on the proper usage of 6S tools. In
2014, the Dobris facility plans to have 66 Yellow Belts, seven
Green Belts and two Black Belts among the ranks.
Finally, the Design for Customer process delivers value with
minimal waste. “Value means benefits for the customer, our
company, our supply chain, and any other stakeholders affected
by the creation and use of the product,” Rak says.
New, Modern Innovation Center to be Completed in June
Since 2003, the Bobcat Engineering Team has operated at the
Dobris manufacturing plant. In December 2011, the company

made the decision to build a new Innovation Center in Dobris
that would be a modern facility dedicated to innovation, stateof-the-art technology development and a European test center.
Ground work started in mid-2012 and construction started in
June 2013. The construction work will finish by the end of June
2014. The facility will have more than 8,000m2 of prototype and
testing floor space and 1,300m2 of office area.
“The Innovation Center was created as a long-term commitment
to nurture the innovative spirit within our business,” Rak says.
“It opens the opportunity to create an environment and foster a
culture that encourages innovative product design, but also
innovation throughout the company.”
The facility will house Product Engineering personnel (including
the product function groups of Test, Advanced Analysis,
Reliability Growth, Prototype, Compact New Product
Development) as well as selected Supplier Development, Product
Management, Employee Sourcing personnel and Training.
New test laboratories will be built for product validation
assuring a high level of performance, reliability and durability
of products produced in Dobris. The new facility will also
contain an in-house noise test chamber with climate controlled
laboratories and static and dynamic test facilities. A new
manufacturing technology enabling the application of rapid
prototyping methods and development of new manufacturing
processes will also be included.
The total investment in this project will reach $17.6 million. The
Innovation Center will support the EMEA business, but will also
be an integral part of the Doosan Global Engineering and
Innovation facilities network.
Doosan-Bobcat Training Center Delivers Dealer Trainings
Adjacent to the manufacturing plant is the DICE EMEA Training
Center, which includes a modern building nearly 1,500m2 in
area, providing ample space for training. Starting in September
2014, a new workshop of 200m2 will be added along with
additional training rooms.
The Training Center covers the Bobcat, Doosan and Doosan
Infracore Portable Power brands and is equipped with an
extensive fleet of 60 machines and 150 attachments.
In 2014, the training team will deliver more than 200 trainings
to dealers in EMEA. Commenting on why dealers should be
interested in training their staff, Laurent Laval, Director of
Training and Demonstration, says, “Six years ago, when we
started organizing training events, we noticed a correlation
between the number of dealers trained and the growth in
market share in that country.”
New trainings are regularly developed in response to dealer
requests. For example, this year, a new customer retention
course is being offered to dealers to help ensure the retention
of their key customers. A new training is currently being
developed for parts salesmen at dealers in the Middle East to

help them develop sales skills and increase the dealer
aftermarket business.
To ensure that dealer employees are trained regularly and on
relevant subjects, certification programs were launched in three
regions in EMEA last year. The programs were made available
across EMEA this year. Dealer personnel can earn certification
after completing the required number of trainings in their
specialization.
Bobcat Road Shows and Various Customer Events
The Training Center hosts a number of customer events both
on and off the Dobris campus. One example of an off-campus
event is the Bobcat Road Shows. A team of demonstrators
travel from dealer to dealer with a truck loaded with Bobcat
machines and attachments to assist dealers in putting on local
events for customers. This year, there are Road Shows planned
in France, Turkey and the UK.
In the Middle East, one of the fastest growing EMEA markets, a
new dealer support and customer attraction concept is being
developed. The concept includes one to two days of training
for dealer salesmen on attachments and machines, followed by
an “open day” event for customers.
Other types of customer events that have proven to be
extremely successful are Doosan and Bobcat Demo Days and
Doosan Quarry Days. The weeklong Demo Days events are
organized four times a year at the Dobris site, while Doosan
Quarry Days (two weeks per year) take place in a quarry mine
near the Training Center.
The huge success of Demo Days can be explained by the
concept itself. “It is a unique opportunity for dealers to invite
customers to try the full range of Doosan and Bobcat
equipment in various applications, and offers them the
opportunity to talk to other customers as well as product
people and demonstrators,“ Laval says.
One of the highlights of Demo Days is the night demo show.
Each time Demo Days take place, the Demo Team modifies the
choreography, making it a new show everytime. The live music,
laser lights, fog and fireworks make it a spectacular show.
Although the event is targeted at customers, Dobris employees
and their families are also invited to watch the night demo
show.
On average, 300 dealers and customers take part in each
customer event. In 2013, customer events in Dobris attracted
more than 1,500 customers, and similar numbers are expected
in 2014. It has been estimated that 70-80% of the customers
who attend buy a machine in the following six months.

Business Intelligence Focus
Article by Kyungmook Lim (Vice President, Doosan Corporation Global Economic Intelligence Team)
Inflation and the Exchange
Rate
- Exchange rates are on everyone’s minds, but not enough
theories to forecast short-term exchange rates
- Countries with high inflation rates experience depreciation
of currency against the U.S. dollar
The exchange rate is a big variable that affects a company’s
performance, as it is used to convert sales, costs, assets, and
liabilities incurred overseas into local currency. The same
revenues generated as yesterday’s may be much greater or less
today due to differences in exchange rates. This is why
exchange rates are on everyone’s minds. Reflecting this interest
in the exchange rate, numerous economists have drafted
related theories. However, most of them fail to provide an
accurate forecast of exchange rates, as it is influenced by so
many variables. I dare say that if an economist succeeds in
formulating a theory that helps estimate short-term exchange
rates, he or she will be nominated for the Nobel Prize of
Economics.
In the next couple of months, BI Focus will introduce a couple
of concepts that can help enhance your understanding of
exchange rates. This edition will cover the relationship between
inflation and exchange rates, which can help estimate exchange
rates in the longer term.
Exchange rates are linked to inflation as the latter affects the
value of currency. Let us take a look at a Korean example that
illustrates this point. Meet John. He is a businessman who
receives KRW 50 million (approximately USD 48,000) in salary.
A year later, his salary remains the same while the inflation rate
is 10%. What happens then? His purchasing power goes down.
He receives the same salary of KRW 50 million, but can
purchase 10% less goods and services compared to the
previous year. This is referred to as the depreciation of currency,
and when there is inflation, currency depreciation will follow.
Exchange rates are literally exchange rates between currencies
of two countries, which is the relative value of a currency
compared to the other currency. Therefore, if the fluctuation of
price impacts the value of two countries’ currencies in a given
period of time, it will impact the exchange rate as well. If you

understand that inflation will drive down the value of currency,
you will understand that the country that experienced greater
inflation will experience a greater depreciation of its currency.
For instance, if in the last decade, Korea’s inflation rate was
30%, while Indonesia’s was 100%, the Indonesian rupiah has
depreciated much more than the Korean won. This indicates
that the same amount of rupiah can be exchanged for much
less won compared to 10 years ago.
Therefore, in the mid- to long-term, the currency of a country
with a stable inflation rate will be relatively strong
(appreciation), while that of a country with a high inflation rate
will be relatively weak (depreciation). Figure 1 illustrates the
inflation rates of countries in the last 10 years and depreciation/
appreciation of a currency compared to the U.S. dollar. Overall,
most countries are showing negative relationships between the
exchange rate depreciation and inflation, which signifies that
countries with higher inflation experienced greater depreciation
of currency compared to the dollar. This explains why countries
known for stable inflation rates such as Switzerland and Japan
maintain strong currencies for a long period of time.
Using this relationship between inflation and exchange rates
helps one draw out a picture of the direction in which the
exchange rate is likely to move in the longer term. Taking a
look at inflation rates and fluctuation of the exchange rate will
reveal many things. For instance, if a country experienced high
rates of inflation while the exchange rate (against the dollar)
has not increased as much, there is a high possibility that even
the smallest shock will trigger a rapid depreciation (increase in
the exchange rate). For example, countries that experienced
great depreciation of its currency after the U.S. Fed hinted at
the tapering of its quantitative easing policy all share the fact
that they record deficits in their current accounts and that they
have had high inflation rates.
However, there is a catch. The impact inflation has on exchange
rates takes time to show up: more than five years, rather than
a mere one to two years. This is because exchange rates are
affected by not only inflation rates but also a great number of
factors such as stocks, flows of bond funds, and the overall
competitiveness of an economy. Such time gap makes this
notion difficult to apply in making short-term predictions of
exchange rates.
Next month’s edition will cover how the purchasing power of a
currency can affect a corporation’s competitiveness.

TQM Project Streamlines
DIPP’s Remanufacturing
Process
- TQM Project streamlines the remanufacturing process; a
breakthrough process development
- Cut up to a day off the remanufacturing process to meet a
large order
A large order from a rental customer prompted the Lean* and
DIPP (Doosan Infracore Portable Power) Remanufacturing teams
in Statesville, North Carolina, USA, to make a process
improvement that cut up to a day off the remanufacturing
process. The leaders of the project were Danny Acred, Lean
Promotion Officer, and Matt Wilson, Lean Six Sigma Analyst.
*Lean: A production system developed by Toyota Motor Corporation, which has been analyzed
and proven by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) researchers. It implies rapid, agile
and slim manufacturing compared to previous methods.
DIPP’s Remanufacturing Team takes used equipment and
completely refurbishes it to be resold. Some of the units are
purchased at auctions, while others are brought in by
customers looking to refurbish their fleet. “We recondition the
parts that can be reconditioned and replace the parts that can’t
be saved, rebuild the engine and compressor and reassemble
the new and reconditioned parts back together. You couldn’t
look at one and tell the difference between it and a new
machine, other than the sticker indicating it’s a remanufactured
unit,” Danny says.
Article by Megan Fraase (Communication Specialist, DICE)
Big Order Calls for Big Changes
When Hertz Equipment Rental® approached DIPP to
remanufacture 27 HP1600WCU air compressors, the teams knew
they had to streamline the remanufacturing process to complete
the order on time. The main area of concern was the time it
would take to sort and organize the parts for the 27 units. The
biggest shortcoming was the way the parts were checked in
and presented to the assemblers. “There was virtually no order
to the parts at all,” Danny says. “When the assemblers went in
and tried to put the parts together, it was a bit like putting a
jigsaw puzzle together.”
To fix this time-consuming issue, the team first developed an
assembly sequence that was divided into five major
subassemblies and 15 other assembly categories. This list was
developed with help from Mark Simmons, who is an assembly
expert in the assembly of HP1600WCU air compressors. “The
machines needing to be rebuilt covered a wide range of
manufacturing dates, so we developed a comprehensive parts
list to encompass all possible vintages of HP1600WCUs, and
each part was assigned to one of the assembly sequence
categories,” Danny says.
Next, the teams developed a new process to allow the
Remanufacturing parts receiver to instantly resource the proper
category when a part was checked in, enabling the receiver to
build kits arranged exactly in the sequence of assembly. “The
parts were put together in such a way that the assemblers
could put the subassemblies together quickly and easily,”
Danny says. Not only did the new process allow the team to
finish the Hertz order ahead of schedule, it allowed them to cut
up to an entire day off the reassembly process.
The new process was implemented over a period of about six

weeks. “We’d put it out there to try it, review it, see what was
working well and what wasn’t, make modifications and iterate
again,” Danny says. “Once everything was in place and working
smoothly, the assemblers were very appreciative of the change,
because they no longer had to waste time and frustration
searching for parts.”
Creativity Before Capital
Often, making these kinds of process improvements require
expensive outside consultants and/or new software or
equipment. However, the Lean and Remanufacturing teams
made this process improvement without purchasing equipment,
contracting services or adding staff. This goes hand in hand
with the Lean concept of Creativity before Capital, which means
you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get a good result.
“We essentially spent nothing but our time on this project to
reap the benefits,” Danny says. “We created the process in a
spreadsheet, so the parts receiver simply has to scan the
barcode on each part to find out where it needed to go.”
Achieving this positive result was the culmination of teamwork
between the Lean Team and the Remanufacturing Team. “The
employees who actually do the rebuilding had a tremendous
amount of feedback for us. A couple of gentlemen, Mark
Simmons, the assembly expert, and David Beaver, who receives
the parts, went above and beyond and did a really great job
for us. We really had to rely on the process owners to continue
to sustain our efforts.”
Although the process was developed with a specific model of
air compressor in mind, the teams have expanded the process
to other models and will continue to do so in the future.
“Through this effort, our monthly rebuild capacity increased
and we reduced the overall processing time for each machine
by eliminating the non-value-added time of sorting and
organizing parts,” Danny says.

Shared Growth with Doosan
Doosan has stepped up its efforts to systematically cultivate suppliers. Doosan Infracore announced a plan to select 44 suppliers
and make them into leading suppliers by 2018. Until last year, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction had supported 54 suppliers
with activities designed to reinforce manufacturing, design and overall operational efficiency. We will look more in detail at the plans
Doosan Infracore and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction have in nurturing suppliers.
On March 3, participants, including Doosan Infracore Procurement Center Senior Vice President Jeong Ko (fifth from right, front row) and CEO
Wonjai Choi (fourth from right, front row), pledged the successful launch at Leading Supplier Kick Off of Top Metal Works.

From 2014 to 2018, Doosan Infracore decided to select 44 suppliers with the
highest growth potential to become global parts suppliers and focus on
nurturing them into leading suppliers.
This year, six suppliers were selected out of 295 suppliers total. Doosan
Infracore will sign a memorandum of understanding with the six suppliers:
starting with IMB Hydraulics on February 5, and followed by Woojin, Wookwang
Industrial, SSTEEL, Top Metal Works and Sam Woo Tech by March 3. CEO Wonjai
Choi of Top Metal Works, said, “I am happy that we are selected but also feel a
strong sense of responsibility. We will make an all-out effort to become a leading
supplier.”
Doosan Infracore will provide the selected suppliers with tailor-made support
programs to build core competencies, including manufacturing technology,
factory operation and quality assurance. Through the program, Doosan
Infracore plans to secure top-tier competitiveness (quality level 1, factory
operation level 1, on-time delivery at 98%) in the domestic market and also
identify exemplary cases of improvement. After the selected suppliers reach the

suppliers,” stressed the Procurement Center’s
Senior Vice President Jeong Ko. “We will spare
no efforts to nurture leading suppliers.”
Meanwhile, Doosan Heavy Industries &
Construction has sent a competitiveness
enhancement support team to enhance quality
assurance, quality improvement,
manufacturing technology and EHS. From 2011
to 2013, 54 suppliers received external
professional consulting services and achieved
an average of 8.3% in cost reduction, 26.5% in
overall facility efficiency and 13.2% in reduced
lead time (time between the placement of an
order and delivery).
Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction plans
to provide professional consulting services to

Learning about Competitiveness
at Doosan Vina CPE Plant
By Yunghi Choi (CEO, Dong-San E&C, supplier of Doosan E&C)
When I first came cross the news that the delegation of suppliers
was to visit Doosan Vina for four days, I had mixed feelings of
excitement and misgivings. I wondered if we'd learn anything
from them. It felt more right to have Doosan Vina visit the
Changwon Plant to benchmark than the other way around.
When I arrived at Doosan Vina, however, all my doubts vanished
one by one. The clean and neat interiors and exteriors of the
factory and the overall work environment were not something that could be achieved
overnight, but the results of thorough management every day. The uniforms the
employees wore united them, and the bulletin board and status board installed at the
front gate of the building identified the plant, boosting trust in Doosan Vina.
I especially enjoyed a dialogue with the Doosan E&C manufacturing director and
manufacturing/PMO team leaders, who were fully dedicated to bringing us all together.
They kept their ears open whenever and wherever they were, and tried to find a midpoint
between different opinions. It was not a typical buyer-seller relationship but more of just us
being together.
During the visit, supplier representatives, including myself, were surprised to see the
remarkable advancement Doosan Vina made. It was in contrast with the Mecatec BG's
Changwon Plant: We were more intimidated by the complexity of Lean implementation.
After the visit, however, we started to believe that a change in the Changwon Plant can
also be brought about by starting with small changes. Not only that, we even felt a sense of
urgency compared to the remarkable growth of Doosan Vina. The high passing rate of the
radiographic test (RT), an important indicator of welding quality management, also implied,
“What they have is not something superficial. That could be achieved only by faithfully
complying with the regulation process.”
Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction signed an agreement
on the suppliers’ competitiveness enhancement support
activities in the first half of 2014, solidifying its commitment to
build a virtuous partnership cycle.
After the visit, I thought Dong-San E&T should also start making small changes one by one.
A change does not have to be something big. Rather, it would be even more effective by
starting with something small and insignificant. Moreover, I plan to consult with our parent
company Doosan Engineering & Construction for advice on where and how we can start,
and actively follow through with
action. As the old saying goes, “A
picture is worth a thousand
words.” I hope we have more
communication opportunities.

Active Communication Promoted by Building Self-led EHS Culture
Since 2013, DICC has established an EHS culture, led by voluntary employee
participation. Also, in a bid to improve the health management performance
at work, they have launched various activities, including a Safety
Improvement Committee, Safety Observation, EHS Improvement &
Evaluation, and Self-management of EHS Risk Factors. Through these efforts,
they were able to promote active communication among different ranks and
teams. When it comes to zero-accident activities, among others, they have
made significant achievements as follows:
■ Safety Brings Happiness | A letter sent to families: More than 1,000 letters
on the importance of safe production were sent to employees and their
families. As a result, the safety awareness and interest levels were enhanced
not only among employees, but also their families. Employees started
paying more attention to creating a safe working environment, and their
families encouraged them to work more safely.
■ Art Contest on Safety | A cartoon, calligraphy and video contest was held
on the theme of safety, and a total of 4,320 art works were submitted.
■ More than 1,000 workers actively carried out EHS activities, including
identification and improvement of risk factors voluntarily made by workers
in the field, identification of near-miss accidents, emergency training by
region and workplace safety observation activities.
Employees worked hard and competed against each other to be selected as
an exemplary case, and made improvements in many areas, including the
facilities, working environment and awareness levels, resulting in the
improvement of overall EHS management levels. This spring, DICC launched
safe production designee activities under the theme of “Production
enhancement through safety.” Participation, dedication and actual practices
of employees made activities and management methods even more
meaningful.

The Doosan Engineering & Construction EHS
Team developed and disseminated an EHS
screensaver to the entire company in February.
The EHS screensaver was selected as the most
effective way to build a consensus on a clean
and safe working environment, which is
stressed in the Doosan Way and the
importance of EHS throughout the company.
Moreover, it was positively evaluated in terms
of cost reduction.
The Doosan E&C EHS Team first gathered the
content for the screensaver. To this end, they
developed a specific implementation plan,
including an EHS campaign, business initiative,
disaster rate and status, accident cases of
Doosan and other companies, and a message
from management. They also identified health
and health care-related items. When CEO
Hesun Yang first saw the EHS screensaver
plan, he said, “Using a screensaver, which did
not serve much purpose before, as a
promotional tool of EHS culture is a great
idea. This is what the Doosan Way is about.”
Smart Tenacity at Work Brings EHS Message to More Users
The actual process of deploying the program on employee PCs was tough.
After conducting a test, they realized it could run on about 84% of the
computers; but the rest had different PC settings that made standardized
deployment difficult. As they searched for a solution, they came across a
supplier that had a program to make a standard deployment possible. In the
end, thanks to support from the supplier and the Information Communications
Team, they could bring the screensaver to 95% of employee computers,
gradually enhancing EHS awareness among employees.
The Doosan E&C EHS Team updates the screensaver with a new EHS message
every week. Health care-related content, in particular, is composed of
information intricately related to employees’ daily lives, such as ways to
prevent musculoskeletal diseases and eat healthy, to draw more attention
from employees. They also built the process in real time to be able to
immediately disseminate important news to employees.
Moreover, the screensaver replaced the EHS-related information materials
published by each site and shop, and, as a result, had a cost
cut effect adding up to 300 million won per year.

Long Range Planning (LRP) and key initiatives, and shared his commitment to building
a sound EHS environment.
It was followed by a special lecture by Vice Chairman James Bemowski of the Doosan
Corporation Business Division. “We have to carry out our safety and environment tasks.
EHS requires active investment and continuous improvement activities through WHY
(Think WHY, Explain WHY, Ask WHY),” Bemowski said.
In the afternoon, team leaders gathered to review the safety and environment section of
the Doosan Way survey results, and a workshop was held to set an improvement
direction by taking field opinions into consideration.

On March 21-22, an unconventional dental clinic opened on the second floor
of the Technology Training Center in the Changwon head office of Doosan
Heavy Industries & Construction (DHIC). DHIC and the Seoul National University
Dental Hospital (SNUDH) launched “Dentistry of Love” together to provide free
dental services to the employees of supplier companies and the elderly living
in the region.
The Dentistry of Love event took place for the first time this year to provide
benefits to employees of suppliers and contribute to the development of regional
communities. More than 20 dentists from SNUDH, with experience in giving free
dental services overseas, including in Mongolia, Russia and Yunhaju, performed
dental care, and more than 30 DHIC employees assisted the dentists.
A survey was conducted among employees of suppliers and more than 170 senior
residents in advance to properly treat diverse symptoms, including extractions,
cavities, gum disease and scaling. The dentists examined each patient’s dental
condition and performed immediate care needed if their condition allowed.
Specialists handled more serious cases requiring professional care, such as extraction
of wisdom teeth, causing less pain for most patients.
The volunteer workers of Doosan assisted the dentists; and the
dentists informed the patients of their condition and additional care
required, and how to keep their teeth healthy.

Global Report
Compiled by Jueui Hong (Doosan Corporation)
In this issue of Global Report, our reporter Woogun Choi in Chongqing, China, introduces the
brilliant artistry in Chinese language through a statement made by a spokesman during the 2014
sessions of the NPC and CPPCC in March. Ellen Kim from New Jersey, USA, shares her experience
of running a half marathon.

Brilliant Artistry
in Language
Article by Woogun Choi in
Chongqing, China (DIY Marketing
Deputy General Manager)
It is said that language is a compound of
diverse facets in our society, including
politics, economy, society, culture and history.
The 2014 sessions of the National People’s
Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People’s
Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC)
held March 3-13 received attention for an
expression spoken by the CPPCC spokesman
Lu Xinhua: “You know what I mean (你懂得,
n˘d0̆ngde).”
During the session, a reporter from the South
China Morning Post asked a question to the
spokesman: “We have noticed some news
about a former member of the Politburo, Mr.
Zhou Yongkang, and there has been a lot of
speculation.” When it was his turn to answer,
spokesman Lu Xinhua took a moment and
started laughing, and the whole news
conference broke into laughter.
After a pause, spokesman Lu Xinhua

answered, “I know as much as you know. You know what I mean (你懂得,
n˘d0̆ngde)?”
‘你懂得 (n˘d0̆ngde)’ implies a lot of things. Those who do not follow
Chinese politics may interpret it as ‘不懂’ (bùd0̆ng, cannot know) and those
who are more familiar with it would understand it as ‘懂了’ (d0̆ngle, know).
It was an answer you would expect from a spokesman.
That may be the reason? During the news conference on the last day of the
sessions, there was not a single question for Zhou Yongkang. (If you think
about it, ‘不懂’ (bùd0̆ng, cannot know) is not something foreign
correspondents in China can say.)
An Advisor Who Read Cao Cao’s Intention
There are many interesting episodes engendered by Chinese characters
being ideograms (a graphic symbol that represents an idea or concept).
One day, Cao Cao (one of the central figures in the Three Kingdom period)
wrote “一盒酥” on the box of biscuits he received as a gift. His advisor,
Yang Xiu, saw the writing and gave one piece to each person around him.
Yang Xiu interpreted ‘盒’ (hé: box)—composed of ‘人 (person),一 (one),口
(mouth) and 皿 (dish)’—as “one person eat one piece.” Isn’t Chinese fun?
Not to mention the witty comment by Lu Xinhua.

Challenge of the
Run the Reservoir
Half Marathon in
New Jersey
Article by Ellen Kim in
New Jersey, USA (Doosan
Heavy Industries &
Construction)
At one point in my life, I had begun to build
a passion for running. As a teenager, I never
understood why people would actually run
simply for the enjoyment. I used to be that
person who ran only if I was being chased.
When I first started running, it was because it
meant that I could have five Snickers instead
of one and my skinny jeans would still fit.
Now I run because it gives me an incredible
sense of accomplishment. Not to mention
that I get away with buying new pairs of
sneakers and different colored outfits to
match. After years of running on the treadmill
at the gym, I finally decided to try something
I have never dreamed of doing.
Most Exhilarating Part of the Race: Mile 8
In October 2013, I entered myself in “Run the
Reservoir,” a 13-mile half marathon in New
Jersey. Being a social creature, I registered for
the event with a friend, an avid runner of 10
years. When race day arrived, I woke up with
a serious case of butterflies. My husband,
who considers the size of his biceps his pride
and joy, knew a thing or two about the kind
of food I should have before a race. He
prepared a protein-packed breakfast; a
banana smothered with peanut butter and
oatmeal to boost my energy. When I arrived
at the race course, the excitement finally hit
me. The place was swarming with other
runners dressed in full gear looking ready to conquer the world. At exactly 9
a.m., the race officially began and I started to jog at an easy pace, knowing
I should save my energy for the later part of the race. The best part about
running with hundreds of other people was that your speed is determined
by the pack; run or get run over. It felt like I was just being carried along by
this huge organism with thousands of legs. After about five miles, I had
already lost my friend, but trying to compete with her was the last thing on
my mind. I started a courtroom drama with my brain presenting all the
reasons why it would be foolish to slow down. At mile eight, it started to
rain and I realized I was running through a rainstorm. To my surprise, this
was the most exhilarating part of the entire race. The cold rain actually
helped dry the sweat and woke me up from the mindless trance I was in. As
we ran along the highway, drivers honked and cheered at us as we became
soaked from head to toe. The adrenaline rush was unreal.
Biggest Reward is Crossing the Finish Line
What helped most during the race was the occasional cheering from
spectators. Even though they were total strangers, at that moment, the
spectators were the battery of my will to finish. After what seemed like
centuries, I finally crossed the finish line with a time of 2 hours and 23
minutes. Had I known that a celebratory picture would be taken at the finish
line, I would have raised my arms high in the air for the camera, but since I
had not known this, my picture shows the physical, emotional and mental
exhaustion I felt at that moment. I felt as if I had used every muscle fiber in
my legs, but also felt a sense of enormous relief to acknowledge that the
race was finally over. Crossing the finish line was also everything I had
dreamed it would be; and as I received my medal, I felt a rush of an
overwhelming sense of accomplishment.
A lot of people asked me what went through my mind while I ran. The best
answer to that is being afraid of not finishing the race. Crossing the finish
line was the most rewarding feeling and
overshadowed the pain and agony I
experienced during the run. It was an
incredible experience that will never
be forgotten and will forever be
etched into my memory.

Mania
We are living in an era that values work-life balance. To work better, we also need to know how to enjoy our lives. This issue of
Doosan features Doosan people worldwide who have interesting hobbies that give greater satisfaction of life. In the April issue, we
introduce the winemaking secrets of DISD Construction Division Manager Yuejian Yang and fishing ideas of DIMGB Foundry
Supervisor Bogdan Grosu, who participates in international fishing competitions. Also, Manager Kibong Park shares his knowledge
on how to book cheap flights gained from years of overseas traveling.

“You may already know the effects of
grape wine. It has immense beauty and
health benefits. Try to make wine at
home. It is fun to drink and make it.”
Yuejian Yang, Manager in Construction
Division of DISD (Doosan Infracore
Shandong Co., Ltd.), is completely
absorbed in wine making. When he was
diagnosed with high cholesterol at a
medical checkup in 2008, he looked up
remedies online and found that wine
helps lower cholesterol. Instead of
buying extravagant wine, Manager Yang
chose to make his own at home.
Initially, he tried to follow recipes he
found online, but it did not taste right.
He was forced to throw away all 40kg of
wine he made. The following year, he
looked for experts to master the proper
way of wine making. Eventually, he
succeeded in making delicious wine.
The April issue of Doosan reveals the
wine-making secrets of Manager Yuejian
Yang.
Sour Grapes in Autumn
It’s best to select sour grapes, such as
black grapes, that come out in late
October. It is a must that you purchase
grapes wrapped in dust covers, because
much of the flavor of the wine comes
from the white powder covering the
grape skins. Then, grapes can be used
without washing. Make sure the water
on the grape skins is completely
removed, because moisture left on the
skins can turn it into vinegar, not wine.
Next, separate the grapes from the
stems, pour them into a stainless bowl,
and crush them using your hands. The
amount of sugar should be determined
by the sugar content of the grapes. In
general, a ratio of 1.5-3 to 10 is about
right. Fill the clean and dry container
three-quarters full. Seal the container;
and for fermentation, place it in a cool
area with the temperature around 20
degrees and allow air to flow in for about
20-30 days. After filtering out the
sediment, leave it for 30-40 days more for
fermentation. Lastly, separate the clear
juice from the sediment in the bottom.
Then you are left with quality wine.
Manager Yang is happy whenever
winemaking season comes around.
When his heartily made wine is finally
ready, he pours it into pretty bottles for
his relatives and friends. He sometimes
receives orders, which pleases him a lot.
His whole team was once into wine
making due to his influence, including
his immediate boss who has also
reached a level of connoisseur.
Manager Yuejian Yang, a wine
making enthusiast, raises a wine
glass after pouring his homemade
wine.

Bogdan Ionut Grosu of
Doosan IMGB
Article by Alina Viasu (Doosan IMGB HR Team)
Bogdan Ionut Grosu—Supervisor in the
Reclaiming Department of the Foundry
Shop in Doosan IMGB—has been
passionate about fishing since early
childhood, as a follower of the English
school of carp fishing. Now, he is
preparing to become a professional
fisherman and participate in high-class
competitions.
A man of many hobbies over the years—
among which we could name soccer,
music, philately (study of stamps) and
fitness—Bogdan remained faithful to the
one that has always been closest to his
heart, fishing. When asked what fishing
means to him, he answered with no
hesitation, “For me, fishing is about a
true escape in nature, new human
connections, relaxation and, last but not
least, competition.”
Fishing Trips to the Danube River and
Black Sea
Bogdan says he inherited this talent
from his father, who, on his turn, took it
over from his grandfather; so it is not a
passion that appeared overnight, but a
true legacy transmitted from generation
to generation in his family.
He has practiced this sport since early
childhood, at the beginning on the rivers
and lakes around his hometown Onesti
(in eastern Romania), then travelling
long distances to bigger lakes, to the
Danube River and the Black Sea. “I
obtained a fishing permit when I was 11
years old, and I have been practicing my
passion on every occasion together with
my friends, work colleagues and family.”
He is a connoisseur of many types of
fishing, from trout, pike or zander fishing
to carp fishing. The latter captivating
him the most because of its complexity
Preparing to Participate in International
Fishing Competitions
This hobby offered him an opportunity
to meet special people with whom he
developed true life-lasting friendships.
Among the enthusiasts of this sport are
many of his coworkers, and together
with them, he has organized many
fishing trips in the country over the
years. “The relations between me and
my colleagues have become stronger
thanks to this hobby we share,” he says.
Bogdan considers the beauty of this
sport is also the fact that anyone can
practice it, regardless of their age,
gender or social status. The fishing itself
means not only relaxation, but also
development of certain abilities like
patience and resistance in front of the
different changes in weather and
somewhat harsh conditions, study and
hard work. “The development of these
abilities depends on every individual
and the level of performance they want
to achieve.” Bogdan adds that thanks to
this sport he so much enjoys practicing,
he has learned real-life lessons. “I
learned to respect nature and everything
that it offers, which is one important
lesson we should all learn.”
For the near future, our DIMGB engineer
prepares to participate in fishing
competitions, aiming for professional
high-level competitions in the country
and abroad. “Considering my experience
so far in terms of interpersonal
relationships, I think Doosan IMGB
should hold a yearly fishing competition
on one of the lakes surrounding the
capital Bucharest,” Bogdan proposes.
Not a bad idea to build a strong team
for our company.

Travel Begins
with Reasonable
Airfare
- Tips on buying affordable
fares released exclusively
for Doosan family
Article by Kibong Park (Assistant Manager, Doosan
Heavy Industries & Construction BCM T/F Team)
Assistant Manager Kibong Park shares his knowhow on affordable trips gained through various travel experience.
There are things that make your heart
beat faster just by hearing the word:
love, first snow, rose and travel.
Paradoxically, the origin of the word
“travel” is travail in Latin, meaning
“agony” or “trouble.” There is even a
saying, “There is no place like home.”
Many of us may have experienced it
and learned a lesson. However, the
immutable truth is travelling is exciting.
I travel overseas about three or four
times a year. In Korea, 2014 is a special
year, because we have 117 official days
off (including Saturdays and Sundays),
which is the highest since 2002. I think
a lot of travel lovers, including me, get
an urge or even a compulsion to travel.
Airfares Purchased on the First Week of
December are 13.5% Cheaper
Travelling starts off with flight bookings.
Having flights and accommodations
ready may even feel like half the
travelling is done, but it is not easy.
When employees take days off, it is a
chance for carriers to make money, so
they do not offer low air fares. However,
I bought tickets to Istanbul, Turkey, and
Osaka, Japan, for 760,000 won (about
$718) and 90,000 won (about $85),
respectively. Believe it or not, I once
bought three tickets, one for Europe
and two for Japan, at only 1.4 million
Park said family trips are the most meaningful. He likes
to go not with the whole family but with one person at
a time. He went with his younger sister in 2012, with
his mother to Japan in 2013 and with his father on a
one-week bicycle trip to Jeju. This picture was taken on
a train on a trip to Japan with his mother. He was
especially happy to see his mother enjoying her very
first overseas trip.
won (about $1,350), albeit a little bit of
mileage used. Now you may wonder
how this is possible. Let me share my
knowhow on how to book cheap flights.
Generally speaking, a direct purchase
through a carrier or travel agency is the
most convenient route. The downside,
however, is that air fares rise near peak
vacation season or travel dates. In this
writing, the disadvantage of high prices
is fatal. However, there is a way. There
are low cost carriers (LLCs) and
promotions that offer cheap airfares. As
a case in point, you can purchase
round-trip tickets to Europe at 910,000
won (about $860) if you buy it through
“Crazy Early Bird,” a annual promotional
event by Lufthansa, a German airline.
Now, the question is “How?”
Some of the best sites include
Skyscanner (www.skyscanner.com),
Kayak (www.kayak.com) and Hipmunk
(www.hipmunk.com). Skyscanner and
Kayak, among others, are the best
tools. However, you can’t just sit in
front of your computer all day. So, when
is the best time? It depends on when
and where you go. According to an
analysis from 2011 to 2013, airfares are
highest in mid-September and 13.5%
lower than the annual average in the
first week of December. By region,
seven weeks and 17 weeks in advance
for flights to Japan and the U.S.,
respectively, the most popular
destinations among Koreans. It also
varies by carrier type: Nine weeks for
low cost carriers and 23 weeks for
regular carriers.
Once a flight ticket is purchased, you
can decide on your accommodations
and plan the rest of your trip. As Aness
An said, travelling is not about escaping
from work. It is a passage to meet
another self, and coming back to our
daily lives and work with fully charged
energy. I hope many people will be
rejuvenated through affordable and
well-planned trips.
Bon voyage!

DIPP Statesville Plant Reaches Million Hours
Without Lost-time Injury
The Doosan Infracore Portable Power (DIPP)
facility in Statesville, N.C., USA, is proud to
report that it reached one million hours
without a lost-time injury in March. A lost-time
injury is a work-related incident that causes an
employee to miss one or more days of work. In
Statesville, hours worked are tracked monthly.
To calculate the hours worked by non-exempt
employees, the actual hours worked are used.
For exempt employees, the calculation is based
on multiplying the number of hours by the
number of work days in a month and the
number of normal work hours. “This
accomplishment reflects the importance all of
our employees place on maintaining a safe and
healthy environment for the Doosan Portable
Power team,” said Steve Hannah, EHS
Coordinator in Statesville.

An Unforgettable Memory on
Opening Day
Unexpected happenings at a baseball stadium make
the experience even more enjoyable. You may catch
a foul ball, bump into a former classmate or win a
free gift offered by the baseball team. However, it
is not common to come across the Group Chairman
and take a picture with him at Opening Day of the
Korean professional baseball league. The three
men from DICE EMEA (Dobris, Czech Republic)—
Manufacturing TQM & Operation Director Peter
Debnar, Manufacturing ME & Industrial Manager
Premysl Nemec, and Manufacturing Engineering
NPD MX Team Leader Daniel Kocourek—who paid a
visit to Doosan Infracore for two weeks to enhance
manufacturing technology, decided to go to Jamsil
Stadium for Opening Day on March 29. As they
were Doosan Bears fans, they wore Doosan Bears
T-shirts to the game. To their surprise, they ran into
Doosan Group Chairman Yongmaan Park, a moment
they will remember forever. Even better, the Doosan
Bears won their game on Opening Day. Now, the
memory will be forever kept as the photo was
selected as the Photo of the Month for the April
issue.
