FCCL (Flexible Copper Clad Laminate) may be an unfamiliar term, but it’s an indispensable material in producing small and medium smart devices. FCCL is used in mobile phones, digital cameras, and tablet computers, and has been growing continuously as the current market trend is focused on compact and light-weight electronic products. As of the first half of 2013, Doosan Corporation’s Electro-Materials BG has the No. 1 global market share in this area. FCCL has also been a cash cow for Doosan Corporation divisions, as it accounts for 10% of the revenue in 2012. This month’s “Our People, Our Tomorrow” story features Youngjin Kim, who has been instrumental in developing FCCL. Kim has had a non-stop schedule as additional factories have been built during the past several years as result of the IT boom. Kim joined Doosan in 1999 and oversaw production and quality control of copper clad laminate (CCL) for 10 years before he transferred to FCCL production in 2010. To meet the high demand, seven production machines were added to the Iksan factory and Kim was in charge of optimizing the process. As Deputy Director, he also participated in the mass production of FCCL-TFT in China’s Changsu factory from March to June 2012 and contributed in manufacturing quality products. Youngjin Kim, Deputy General Manager of Doosan Corporation’s ElectroMaterials Process Tech Team poses for a picture with FCCL at Iksan factory. (Photo/Studio by Photomind) 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 3 “The Iksan factory is in Korea, but Changsu factory is in China, so everything was unfamiliar. After four months of putting together a TFT for the technology, quality, installment, production and management engineers, we were able to manage the raw materials, manufacture the product, conduct quality inspections and send off shipments with the local staff. I believe we achieved our goal in such a short time because of timely decisions and full support by our leadership. Kim’s team has been working in timely fashion to add production machines and even increased productivity during the process. Last year, Kim’s team contributed to an increase in revenue by adding two production machines at the Changsu factory. The Electro-Materials BG’s performance was recognized in 2013 with a Doosan Technology Innovation Award. Secret to Technology Innovation is Cultivating People “Our corporation recognizes employees’ differences,” Kim said. “Rather than sit around and wait for our employees to achieve a goal, we invest in fostering their growth. I believe that’s the secret to continuous technological innovation.” Until last year, Kim was the Parts Leader of the Process Technology Team at Iksan factory. One of his roles was to mentor the less experienced employees. Kim added, “I seek to pass on my knowledge to the up-and-coming employees so we can achieve the growth of the company through the growth of our people.” Kim said, “Because the field of telecommunication moves forward at such a fast pace we need to prepare for the next stage. The existing FCCL is 9um (micro meter; 1um is 1 millionth of a meter) and we are preparing to make 6um FCCL. Naturally, there are many risks involved in producing FCCL that’s one-tenth the thickness of hair (10um), so we need to put our heads together and have a strong will to achieve this goal.” Kim’s spirit to constantly raise the industry bar reflects Doosan’s strength. 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:04 Focus 01 “If You Want to Live the Doosan Way, Make ‘WHY’ Part of Your Life” - Results of the WHY Campaign Contestant Event - Producing a sequel video per participants’ ideas This WHY campaign video included three situations in which Why doesn’t occur and asks the contestants to submit entries explaining why such situations happen and what to do to about them. Doosan’s WHY Campaign Participant Event was held January 15-29. The focus of this event was on what Doosan people need to do to achieve WHY: Thinking when working, Explaining the goal and purpose of the task, and Asking when in question. For this campaign, a video was produced showing three situations when “WHY” didn’t happen. The video was posted on the Doosan portal for employees in Korea to participate in a contest. They were to watch the video and explain why those situations occurred and how to resolve each situation. A total of 183 contestants entered their ideas. WHY Doesn’t Happen Because of Busy Schedules One of the entries was from Baekhoon Kim, an employee of the Doosan Corporation Mottrol BG Hydraulic Purchasing Team. He said WHY doesn’t happen because of peoples’ busy schedules. His analysis was that, “Because everyone is busy, tasks are given out without a full background explanation or purpose. The emphasis is on what needs to be done. Similarly when given a task, you are focused on completing it as soon as possible, so there isn’t enough time to ask questions. I think that's the reason WHY doesn’t happen. He also added, “Asking questions could imply that you didn’t understand the given task fully in the first place, so you are afraid of giving a bad impression to your supervisor. And, sometimes the work environment doesn’t allow you to engage in open communication with others.” Kim continued, “It may take longer to explain the background information when giving a task, but doing it that way can produce higher quality work that exceeds the results when only brief instructions are given out.” Sangyoun Bang’s (General Manager of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Nuclear Business Group RCP R&D) entry showed a well thought out way to give instructions to employees. In response to proposing a way to solve one of the situations in the campaign video (in this video a supervisor gives a task to an employee by saying, “Write a five-page report to give to the Vice President.”), Bang submitted the following answer: “Instead of giving such brief instructions, he could have said, “The first page of the report should include a summary of ___as discussed in ____ meeting, the second page should include the second issue and the last page needs to include such and such. Please let me know if you don’t have the meeting minutes or report on the product development project. Do you have any questions or is there anything you don’t understand? Also, use the following design template for the presentation.” This answer provided much more detail for the worker. Producing Sequel Video Based on Ideas Submitted to Campaign The executive team that organized the event said, “The entries clearly reflected that participants gave a lot of thought to our questions. I think this shows that our efforts to prompt them to think about the WHY campaign through various avenues, such as Doosan Way Time, has paid off. It has had a positive effect.” The executive team selected 60 contestants and gave out prizes, including an iPad mini and Doosan Bears sweaters. A sequel video being produced with the contestants’ ideas is underway, and some of the entries will also be available on the Doosan Way discussion boards. 04 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종1.indd 4 14. 2. 26. 오후 10:10 Focus 02 G2 Engine’s Innovative Technology Recognized in Europe - Doosan Infracore’s G2 Engine Receives Award for Excellence from UK Forklifts Truck Association (FLTA) G2 engine has three models: 1.8 L, 2.4 L, 3.4 L. The one in the picture is 2.4 L model. The efficiency and green technology behind Doosan Infracore’s G2* engine was recently recognized in Europe. On February 6, the G2 diesel engine received the Innovation Award at the 2014 FLTA Awards for Excellence from the UK Forklift Truck Association (FLTA). As one of the UK’s most trusted associations, FLTA hands out its Year of Excellence Awards to industries, people, or technologies that have contributed the most in terms of innovation, environment, ergonomics and safety. Doosan Infracore competed against its competitors and six other companies that were also nominated for the award. Winners were voted by visitors to the FLTA website. The G2 engine sets a new standard in non-DPF (diesel particulate filter) technology, and will be mounted in Tier 4 Final Bobcat® loaders, excavators and Toolcat™ utility work machines. Because of this innovative approach, the G2 engine was also selected as one of the “10 Mechanical Technologies of the Year” at the end of 2013 by the Korean Association of Mechanical Engineering Societies(KAMES). In addition to being used on Bobcat equipment, the G2 engine is also used in 2 to 3.5-ton forklifts manufactured by Doosan Corporation Industrial Vehicle. Because it is mountable on equipment manufactured in domestic and overseas plants, the G2 replaces engines once imported from other countries. Tim Waples, Director of Doosan Industrial Vehicle UK said, “We believe the G2 is a shining example of the applied research and development capability within the Doosan Group and 4 shows Korean innovation at its best. Instead of trying to modify an existing engine to comply with new regulations, our designers made a completely new engine that reduces emissions so much that a particulates filter is no longer needed.” Wonjoon Choi, Vice President of Doosan Infracore’s Engine BG Strategy commented, “This Year of Excellence award is going to be the backbone in securing customers and it will also give us a breakthrough in engine-powered forklifts sales.” He added, “I sincerely thank our staff who have given their all from the design of the engine to production and sales.” *The Doosan Infracore G2 engine is a high-efficiency, environmentally friendly engine that uses Doosan’s Ultra Low PM Combustion (ULPC) to reduce exhaustive emissions. The G2 engine meets the Tier 4 Final emissions standard, which is the most strict exhaust regulatory standard, without using a high-cost diesel particulate filter. Doosan Infracore completed construction of the G2 Engine Production Plant in October 2012 and began producing engines for forklifts. The plant is in full swing to produce engines that will be mounted on select Bobcat compact construction equipment. The market for compact diesel engines is expected to expand to include agricultural machinery, air compressors and forklifts. On February 6, Doosan Infracore’s G2 engine received the Innovation Award at the 2014 FLTA Awards for Excellence. Tim Waples (first from left), Director of Doosan Industrial Vehicle UK, accepted the award. 05 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 5 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:04 Focus 03 Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Corporate PR Receives Commercial Campaign TVCF Award - Oricom and Recent BC Card Ad Showed Off Creativity Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction and Oricom staff pose for a picture after receiving the award. Mixed expressions of nervousness and excitement were clearly visible from the author who just published his first novel. Though he humbly calls his work a beach novel—light reading for a vacation—the book explores human nature and philosophically explains how humans and society respond to fear. Time Trial is about a chase game between detectives and a man in his 60s who hides explosives all over the U.S. The original meaning of the book title is “a way of measuring an individual’s strength and endurance in a race against the clock to secure the fastest time,” but Bull says the term is used more ambiguously in the book. But he adds, “Once you finish the book you’ll know what it means.” Reg Bull holds his first book at his office at Doosan Tower in Seoul 08 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 8 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:04 Thriller, an Unexpected Genre Bull has been a vegetarian nearly all his life, he is always willing to help those who ask for assistance, and he hasn’t had an alcoholic drink since he was 16 years old. How could this kind of a person depict the psychology of a man who kills innocent people and write violent scenes so well? How could such a man write a thriller? “I have been a vegetarian for the past 40 years, but I’m fine with others eating meat. It’s a personal choice for me, not a point of argument with others. Similarly, I haven’t had alcohol since I was 16, but I am pleased to see others enjoy it responsibly. Here in Korea, I know I’m in a minority. It’s these differences between people that attracted me to work in HR in the first place, and it’s those same differences that enable authors to create such rich characters that keep us all addicted to reading.” Bull joined Doosan in 2011 as Global HR Team Leader. He has more than 30 years of experience in HR working for a number of global companies in the UK, China, the U.S., and the Netherlands. Bull is responsible for the ongoing operation of Doosan’s global mobility policies and is working on the rollout of Doosan’s Code of Conduct approach, the design of our Doosan Way aligned selection test for overseas applicants, and many other similar pieces of work with a global character. He also tends to act as a consultant for subsidiaries where they would like another view on “how” to get things done in their global environment. With such a large workload, it’s a wonder he was able to write a novel. “Not only do I never eat meat or drink, but neither do I play golf! That means that every weekend when some of my executive colleagues spend eight hours travelling to and playing golf, I get that same amount of time to indulge my passion for writing. So, just as they can fit their love of golf into their busy lives, I can also enjoy my time in a more sedentary pursuit. As is so often the case in life, it’s all about the choices we make.” You’d think an HR executive would write a book on selfdevelopment, but Bull wrote a novel, moreover a thriller, a genre that’s completely different from his expertise. We wondered why. “I studied literature and politics in college, so I’m not so far away from literary works. But, actually, it was not my studies that made me write the book, it was a man called Denis Waitley. He is what is often referred to as a motivational speaker, and I vividly recall him saying, ‘If you want to do something, you’ll find a way; but if you don’t want to do something, you’ll find an excuse.’ I realized that I sometimes finished reading books saying, ‘I could do better than that,’ so Waitley was my spur to answer back to myself, ‘Okay, then, why don’t you stop moaning and just get on and do it!’ I chose the crime-thriller theme because it best suited some of the characters and messages that I wanted to incorporate. I also wanted to write a book that more people would want to read, rather than the deeply layered, psychological relationship tome that would appeal to a smaller readership.” Success is Giving It Your Best Even though his first book has just been published he still has much to write. He has plans for five novels: the sequel to Time Trial, two other thrillers, and two novels in different genres. He also writes poems in his spare time and he is currently writing one on the Korean War. Once he is satisfied with literary works he plans to move on to sculpture and painting. “I want to work on a piece of sculpture or a painting that’s completely for me and no one else.” What Bull said about success, that “success is not always about being the ‘first’, but it is always about giving the ‘best’ that each person has,” resonated in my head for a long time. “We fail at 100% of the things we never begin.” ■ Time Trial Overview Hidden in peaceable cities and towns across America, a staggering number of explosive devices ingeniously seeded over a dark span of 25 years are set to detonate during the next excruciating 48 months. The architect of this chilling abomination, the silver haired Thomas Paine, has surrendered himself to the FBI promising to cooperate on the curious proviso that he can handpick the case’s investigation team. From a crematorium to a consulate; from a fast-food restaurant to the Hoover Dam—as the dozens of targets slowly emerge, where will the bomber strike next? Can Detective Sergeant Davie Song together with Paine’s selection of other seemingly unconnected individuals unravel what appears to be an old man’s motiveless crime? Will the young team’s ingenuity prove enough to solve the complex clues they have been set and get to the remaining devices in time? Full of engrossing puzzles, twists and turns, along with some truly memorable characters, it is the ideal novel for people who don’t mind accidently missing their train station. *You can find "Time Trial" on Amazon.com and the Barnes and Noble website. 9 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 9 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:04 Article organized by Jaeyoung Lee (Doosan Corporation) Our Answer is in the Doosan Way Our Story! - Doosan Infracore’s Engine BG Productivity Improvement TFT, Doosan Engineering & Construction HRSG BG, and Doosan Corporation Information & Communication BU SMART TFT’s “Our Story” In many sectors of Doosan there are movements to strengthen fundamental competitiveness through advanced processes and systems. For instance, Doosan Infracore’s Engine BG turned a global crisis into an opportunity, and, as result, increased productivity of large-size engines. Doosan Engineering & Construction’s Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) BG completed a guidebook on the steel frame structure of the HRSG and increased customer satisfaction. The Doosan Information & Communication BU’s SMART Task Force Team (TFT) developed an effective mobile application that merged IT technology with conference room culture. As such, the following cases introduce how business and work integrate to meet rising expectations. Teamwork Helps Avoid Crisis - Doosan Infracore’s Engine BG Large-size Engine Productivity Improvement TFT; Prepared to Manufacture 15,000 Engines in 2014 Article and photos by Jongbeom Woo (Doosan Infracore) Since 2012, there were rumors about the low-end engine market, which is what the Engine BG places a high priority in. Because of the global recession in the construction market, top-tier competitors in high-end markets were on the move to the low-end market. As a leading company in the low-end engine market, this was not good news. However, by taking sound measures, the Engine BG turned the tide of the market before the crisis hit. Last year, the Engine BG sold 10,865 units of large-size engines, bringing sales revenue of approximately $227 million. The number of units sold and sales revenue increased 26% and 22%, respectively. Fast, Accurate Execution by Sales Representatives is Key The shift of leading companies to the low-end engine market was correct as expected. To move ahead of the game, the Engine BG did several things. First, a study was conducted to examine 30 manufacturers that take up the majority of the large-size engine’s sales in the industry. Then, the usage of Doosan Infracore’s engines was analyzed along with possible niche markets for Doosan Infracore’s product. BG leaders were also quick to jump into action. Engines BG Director and Executive Vice President Honggoo Lee and other executives visited clients abroad to promise to increase product quality and aftermarket service. Thanks to these efforts, Doosan Infracore secured an annual volume of 2,982 units 10 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 10 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:04 Doosan Infracore Large-size Engine Productivity Improvement TFT (Production); (from left) Chiki Jung (Manager), Donghoon Kang, Junho Park (General Manager), Hyoman Jeong (Foreman), Hyungkoo Cho (Manager), Changho Kim (Supervising Mechanic), Hyunsig Kang (Foreman), Byongchol Lee (Deputy General Manager), and Seongmo Hwang (Manager). (approximately $54.6 million) with the three biggest customers in Turkey at an early stage. These leaders also visited the regional sales headquarters of the clients’ vehicle manufacturers that use Doosan engines to promise quality improvement and prompt attention when issues arise. Once the leaders visited the sites, big and small changes followed. Previously, when clients placed a request for a special engine, the production staff simply passed along the request. Now, Doosan Infracore collaborates with clients step-by-step to meet their requests. As a result, engine delivery now takes 15 days, down from 45-60 days previously. Needless to say, relations between Doosan Infracore and its clients have improved. Passion of Production Line Staff Despite Overtime The increase in sales volume was a good sign, but it didn’t come without challenges. Based on initial orders, the Engine BG expected to produce 10,730 units, a 24% increase over the previous year. This number was far beyond what the production line could manufacture, which was 9,500 units. However, the production line staff was enthusiastic about the sales increase and worked overtime without complaint. The operating system ran 24 hours a day. In addition, to strengthen the competitiveness of the production line, the team worked to increase its productivity. Some parts were outsourced to optimize the production process and possible equipment failures on the production line were pre-analyzed to prevent any possible maintenance system failure. As the failure of equipment significantly decreased, the average equipment utilization rate increased from 61% to 88%. Even when the factory is in full gear there is less equipment failure and it has become much easier to meet delivery deadlines. Since last May, Doosan Infracore has reached its goal of 1,000 units per month, and now has the system to manufacture 12,000 units per year. Members of the Engine BG Large-size Engine Productivity improvement TFT say, “We met often to examine the number of units manufactured each month, changed schedules accordingly, and frequently talked about changes happening in the market. That was what our teamwork was like. We are happy to learn that our team’s success has been shared in Doosan Way’s Our Story and has given much motivation to other teams.” They added, “Due to the high demand, we sold 12,000 units of the large-size engine, an 11% increase from last year. I’m looking forward to 2014. To meet the increasing demand of the market, the Engine BG is planning to manufacture 15,000 units per year.” Doosan Infracore large-size Engine Productivity Improvement TFT. The Doosan Engineering & Construction non-pressure part of Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) Mechanical Design Team compiled a guidebook, “Technical Analysis Design Guide for HRSG Steel Structure,” after six months of hard work. The contributors are Seok Cheol Ji (Deputy General Manager); Dong min Lee (Deputy General Manager); Sung hyun Nam (Manager); Kang soo Won (Manager); Yun hyuk Jung, and Jong sun Yi. The guidebook was compiled in response to increasing inquiries and comments about the technical analysis design of the HRSG steel structure. Now, the company can respond to inquiries quickly and systematically. To guarantee HRSG’s fundamental competitiveness, the team first gathered 101 cases which impacted to calculation of steel structure from 2003-2013 projects. Once the cases were collected and organized, the team analyzed issues that could become potential risks and narrowed down customers’ key interests. Based on the usual requests customers’ make, the team made A, B, and C categories and tried to reflect those issues in the guidebook. The team further categorized content on steel structure, compared and integrated currently available standards of structural design, and compiled a first draft to secure its own design technology. As a last step, everything in the guidebook was verified by team members to ensure the effectiveness of the guide. The deadline for completion of design structure is often delayed, as companies make last-minute changes to their orders, which sometimes means the delivery date gets pushed back. However, as a result of this guidebook, these delays can now be minimized. Moreover, as all the data are now standardized, it is possible to analyze the structure in a uniform manner, which means less time spent analyzing. The biggest accomplishment HRSG has made is creating its own guidebook on structure analysis, the backbone of HRSG. This was possible because the team implemented Open Communication, Tenacious Execution and Limitless Aspiration. This accomplishment was recognized when the team won the Doosan Engineering & Construction HRSG BG’s Doosan Way Project Grand Prize last year. 12 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종1.indd 12 14. 2. 26. 오후 10:10 Stop Searching for Empty Conference Rooms - Doosan Information & Communication BU SMART TFT developed a mobile app to make it easier to search for and reserve conference rooms Way Team, Minho Lee of DI FCM Team, and Moonsung Lee of DWI Team, came together. Minho Lee of the Information & Communication BU, who participated in the development of the mobile app, poses in front of his office. From April to December last year, the Doosan Corporation Information & Communication BU implemented a SMART Task Force Team (TFT) to reduce ineffective work environments. As one of the solutions to reduce work inefficiency, the team launched a mobile app February 10, to make it much easier to search for and reserve conference rooms. The idea for the app began with issues surrounding the “culture of meetings.” Questions like, “Why is it always so hard to find an empty conference room for urgent meetings?” and “Why do people come late for meetings?” were the impetus for the development of the app. Yes, there is an online system to make reservations and check available rooms; however, there are times when users do not cancel unneeded reservations in time. In some cases, meetings finish early enough for other teams to use the room for the remaining time, yet it is difficult to announce such a lastminute change. To improve the efficient use of conference rooms, Information & Communication BU SMART TFT members put their ideas together. The collective input of ideas led to the birth of an app that makes the room search and reservation process much easier. Using the app, users can check in and check out of rooms, giving others the ability to analyze the data as needed. To successfully develop the app, Seongil Han (Assistant Manager), Junyoung Bang of Information & Communication BU DI SCM1 Team, Donghwa Lee (Assistant Manager) of Doosan Check In and Check Out of a Conference Room When users come to a conference room, they can check in by scanning a QR code (Quick Response Code) or tagging NFC (Near Field Communication). Check out is done in the same way. Once the QR code is scanned or the NFC tagged, any remaining time of the conference room changes to available time in the app. When no one checks in to a reserved room for a specific duration of time, the room reservation automatically cancels, reducing the number of unused rooms and encouraging employees to keep their reservations up to date. The data is expected to be used in a variety of ways, such as reducing costs and increasing usage of conference rooms. The results will contribute to improved conference room culture in the near future. Donghwa Lee of the Information & Communication BU, who participated in this project, said, “The development of this app is meaningful in several ways. First, it reduces time spent searching for vacant conference rooms and applies advanced processes and systems to the targeted work environment. Second, we use the data and IoT (Internet of Things), which are both the latest buzzwords these days. Lee further added, “We hope this app changes the company’s meeting culture and increases the efficient use of conference rooms.” A screenshot of the mobile app developed by Information & Communication BU this February. 13 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 13 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:04 Doosan Bears Spring Camp Rigorous Training for V4 at Arizona and Miyazaki - Coach Ilsoo Song: “I will strengthen players’ stamina and level of play to create a well-balanced team” - Three foreign players join the team through Major League connection Since the Doosan Bears came to a close second in last year’s Korean Series, they are working to win V4 in 2014. This year’s training camps are in Arizona, U.S., and Miyazaki, Japan. For the first part of training, the pitcher and catcher teams were in Arizona, while the fielder team trained in Miyazaki before both teams reunited for training in Miyazaki on February 5. Ilsoo Song, a new coach, is constantly talking with the players and giving his all to the team. Song says, “Only when the players practice hard can they survive to play in the first block. My goal is for each player to build enough stamina to play the whole season well and to bring each player’s level up in the process of building a well-balanced team.” Article by Jueui Hong (Doosan Corporation) The players are training in a fun and light-hearted environment. For instance, on New Year’s Day, players enjoyed the game of Yut (a traditional Korean game played on the day of Lunar New Year), and some players voluntarily flaunted their talent during short breaks to lighten the mood. Team Leader Sungheun Hong states, “We are experiencing empty nest syndrome as some of our veteran players have left our team, but I see hope for our future as some players are competing to take over those roles. As of now, I’d say our team atmosphere is very good.” Pitcher Leader Kyungeun Noh says, “This training is focused on effectively reducing pitching counts and increasing endurance that will last a season.” The trio of foreign players, Dustin Nippert, Chris Volstad and Jorge Cantu are also working in tune with the rest of the team at the camp. The trio knows each other from Major League Baseball. Nippert and Cantu played together when the Texas Rangers advanced to the World Series in 2010. Cantu and Volstad played for the Florida Marlins from 2008 to 2009. Volstad says, “I’m excited because the Doosan Bears achieved impressive results last year.” The Doosan Bears are scheduled to play with Nippon Professional Baseball teams SoftBank, Seibu and Rakuten in Miyazaki and are scheduled to return to Korea March 5. The Generation X engine is designed to strengthen output power by lengthening the pistons’ working distance. This engine can reduce fuel costs per ship by about $771,000 and it cuts gas emissions by 7%. The engine is expected to be mounted to a 3900 TEU-level container ship currently being built at China’s state-owned shipyard, DSIC (Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd.), to be delivered to Singapore PIL (Pacific International Line) in June. This issue’s “Professionalism” section focuses on Seung-pyo Ryu, Senior Research Engineer of the New Technology Development Team; Bum-jin Cho, Manager of Marketing & Sales of the Marine Engine Team; and Yang-hyo Kim, Assistant Manager of the Operation Team, who have contributed to engine development, contracting and trial tests, respectively. The Generation X (Extremely Efficient) engine, jointly developed by Doosan Engine and Wärtsilä, a Swiss low-speed diesel engine company, increases output power by 15% compared to existing models. An increase in the number of stokes causes a decrease in engine RPMs, but because of its greater output power, the engine’s fuel economy is enhanced. The engine allows vessels to use large propellers, which, in turn, allows the ship to operate more efficiently. In fact, the Generation X engine brings a 7% improvement in fuel economy compared to existing engines. As a result, gas emissions, such as NOx or SOx were also decreased by 7%. An existing engine of the same level can produce 25,000 horsepower, but Generation X brings it up to 29,000 horsepower. Because of this extra output power, the Generation X can be used in bulk carriers, tank ships and small and medium container ships. The process of developing such an engine was not easy. During the initial development stage in 2011, the plan was to first develop the W-X62 model (with a 620mm cylinder) and then develop the W-X72 model, which has a 720mm cylinder. However, the company was able to draw a contract for the W-X72 model, allowing it to be developed a year ahead of schedule. Seung-pyo Ryu, Senior Research Engineer of the New Technology Development Team, who was in charge of the joint development, says, “As with The trio, which came together to make the Generation X engine possible, poses in front of a low-speed diesel engine at the Low-speed Plant 1 (from left: Seung-pyo Ryu, Senior Research Engineer; Yanghyo Kim, Assistant Manager; and Bum-jin Cho, Manager). 18 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 18 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:05 19 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 19 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:05 A picture of the Generation X engine’s official test run. The Generation X is an eco-friendly, high-efficiency engine developed by Doosan Engine. any new engine, there were a lot of things to examine in terms of the development schedule, production and assembly. We worked hard with the design, purchase, manufacture, trial-test and quality control divisions, and it was such a great moment to see the engine start. I learned that when we come together with a common goal, there is no problem we can’t solve.” Strategic Sales Wins Fierce Contract Deal Drawing a contract for the Generation X engine was also a challenge. The process began when Pacific International Line (PIL), the world’s 14th largest shipping company, placed an order for six 3900 TEU container ships at China’s 4th largest shipyard, DSIC, during the first half of 2012. Because DSIC and PIL have had many business transactions and amicable relations with Doosan Engine, it appeared that Doosan Engine was well-positioned. However, as DMD (Dalian Marine Diesel Co., Ltd.), an engine maker affiliated with CSIC (China Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd.), rose as Doosan Engine’s competitor, the competition looked unfavorable for Doosan Engine. Facing a difficult challenge, Doosan Engine’s Marine Engine Marketing & Sales Team approached the case strategically using customer-focused analysis. Bum-jin Cho, Manager of Marketing & Sales for the Marine Engine Team says, “PIL provides worldwide transportation service and that’s where we got the idea. We made our company’s worldwide A/S service more appealing and emphasized the X72 engine that was being jointly developed with WCH and that won us the contract for all six container ships.” Choi gave a big smile as he recalled the situation. Successful Trial Run and Customer Thank You Message Once the contract was drawn successfully, the Generation X engine was created at the Doosan Engine Lowspeed Plant in two months. Once the engine was put together, only the trial test remained to see if the engine had the horsepower and fuel economy that was requested. Wärtsilä’s existing engine, RT-flex, is an electronic control engine that needs to be controlled elsewhere, but the Generation X is an engine with a self-controlled system, so understanding the system was time- consuming. The preparation process needed to be extra meticulous because this was the initial product. Yang-hyo Kim, Assistant Manager of the Operation Team, who was responsible for the Generation X test trial, said, “There were a number of issues when we ran a test of the first Generation X model. Putting our heads together to solve every single problem we had made me the manager I am today. Our product passing the trial run and our team receiving a thank you message from the customer made our hard work worth it. We had a sense of pride when we saw the Generation X pass the trial test.” Although Ryu, Cho and Kim were all on different teams, they showed optimal teamwork by cooperating to achieve one common goal. Their strong collaboration and execution reflect the Traits of Doosan People. *W6X72: This is a low-speed engine used in vessels and large plants. The “6” indicates the number of cylinders, and “72” indicates the diameter of each cylinder. So, the W6X72 is a 6-cylinder engine and each cylinder is 720 mm wide. The W6X72 has the horsepower of about 3,000 2000cc sedans. The “W” represents Wärtsilä and “X” means engine. *TEU: TEU (Twenty-foot equivalent units) signifies the size of a container. 1TEU is a container that is 20 feet long, eight feet high and eight feet wide. 20 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종1.indd 20 14. 2. 26. 오후 10:11 “I was so happy and proud when I received a thank you message from our customer after the engine passed the test run.” Yang-hyo Kim Operation Team “Winning the contract was possible because all the related divisions cooperated. The European subsidiary of the Doosan Infracore Machine Tools BG, DIG (Doosan Infracore Germany GmbH), is located in Dormagen, Germany. Kyungah Pyun, who works on the Purchasing Team, is a passionate woman with loads of curiosity. She never passes an opportunity to take up a new challenge. Her long-distance relationship with a German ended happily with a marriage in 2010, and, while studying German in 2011, she joined Doosan through a friend’s connection. “I’m responsible for machinery parts and service, and I oversee 70-80 customers from all over Europe, including Germany, Hungary, Italy and Latvia. The production schedule depends on having the right machinery parts, and sometimes those parts malfunction and need to be replaced, so this work is very dynamic.” You can imagine her busy schedule as she receives more than 100 emails every day. However, she uses her 18 years of experience in the overseas Sales Division well as she applies her knowledge to strengthen relationships with suppliers, sometimes bringing her personal life into the conversation. “Last December, I was visiting a company for price negotiation, but we weren’t able to reach an agreement. The negotiation took longer than expected and I ended up missing my flight at the Milan Airport. It was right before Christmas and I had to spend the night at the airport. I was able to smile at the end, because we reached a satisfying result in our negotiation.” When developing a new product, instead of purchasing parts as requested by the R&D Division, which is the normal process, she seeks out new avenues to bring about changes, such as contacting a new supplier to get a better deal. Most DIG employees are very familiar with machine tools, but they are not as comfortable with construction equipment. Pyun has a unique experience in driving construction equipment. During a business trip to Korea in November, she took up a new challenge when she visited the Service Parts Center in Ansan – driving an excavator. “After driving an excavator, my fear of construction equipment disappeared, and I realized how important each and every part is to our customers. I also realized the importance of providing equipment parts within 24 hours so machines can be fixed as soon as possible.” Her colleagues are always amused when they see the photo of her on an excavator at her desk. The photo reminds her of her business trip to Korea and instantly makes her smile. Gwinner Tooling Engineer Paul Lundstrom is a jack of all trades. He has dabbled in pottery, bike riding, various philanthropy projects and now, woodworking. Up until March 2013, Paul made and sold pottery to raise money for the Great American Bike Race, a Bismarck, North Dakota, USA, indoor biking event that raises money to pay for medical services and equipment for children and young adults with cerebral palsy or related disabilities. The Great American Bike Race is close to Paul’s heart because he was born with cerebral palsy, but that hasn’t stopped him from doing anything he sets his mind to. “I treat my disability like I don’t have one,” he said. “Since I’m more active than most people, my friends don’t even notice it anymore.” Paul eventually realized that using a pottery wheel was too strenuous for his arm and had to stop. Needing a new hobby, he began buying the equipment necessary for woodworking. Soon, he hatched the idea for his first project, a small oak box. “Like all my projects, I get an idea and I just go for it,” he says. Because Paul only has the use of one arm, he has come up with creative solutions to get the work done, such as clamps to hold the pieces together and special grooves cut into the wood with his router table. “I’ve been working with one arm for 34 years, so it doesn’t seem that hard to me now,” he says. Right now, he makes the boxes for friends and family and doesn’t have plans to sell them. Paul says one person did offer to buy his first box, but he opted not to sell it since it took four months to complete. Now, he can make a box in a week. “I didn’t really want to sell it because it took so long,” he says. “You’re figuring everything out as you go, and once you make a cut, you’re done if you screw up.” Paul is currently working on a box for a friend’s wife. “I figure if someone else can enjoy it, I’ll get more pleasure out of it too,” he said. Currently, Paul has a router, a router table and a chop saw set up in his twostall garage. “Those tools are pretty one-arm friendly,” he says. To make more space in his garage, he removed the pottery wheel and used the base of it for his router table. “I try to get out there after work when I’m not too tired, and I just go from there,” he says. “I get a lot done, especially since I hooked up my computer to my stereo so I can listen to music.” Paul’s interest in woodworking stems from his childhood and spending time with his grandpa. “My grandpa was a really talented woodworker,” he said. “When I was little, I made all sorts of stuff with his help in his basement.” Now, he uses woodworking as a creative outlet. “I just love the smell of the sawdust. In anything I do, I love taking many parts and creating something new and different and solid,” he said. One of the boxes Paul made. 23 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 23 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:05 People New Employee Training Organized by Kiwoong Lee (Doosan Corporation PR) Explore DOOSAN → Be DOOSAN → Embrace the future Seeing New Employee Training Program Through Photos - Second Half of 2013 – New Employees Dream of Future as Doosan People! Future of Doosan Lies in our New Employees. The 14-day Employee Training was completed in January. The theme of this year’s Training Program was as follows: < Explore DOOSAN > → < Be DOOSAN > → < Embrace the future >. The purpose of the program was to help the new employees become Doosan people. During the < Be DOOSAN > part, which focused on recognizing traits of Doosan people, employees worked the Doosan Way puzzle (to understand the transformation process) and participated in discussions to gain an in-depth understanding of the Doosan Way. This was the first year to implement an online training component prior to the actual Training Program, which allows for more in-depth on-site discussion and debate. In addition, the Training program included a lecture by Doosan Group Chairman Yongmaan Park, the New Year’s concert, and a tour of Doosan’s main business sites in Korea. Doosan introduces the New Employee Training Program for the second half of 2013 along with pictures that show the new employees’ passion and enthusiasm. “We can go where no one can!” New employees practice “Youth Doosan Anthem.” 24 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 24 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:06 1 2 3 1. “We are becoming one by building teamwork!” The new employees build trust by joining hands. 2. “We are the Doosan newbies!” New employees attend the New Year’s music concert. 3. “Being a member of the Doosan family puts a big smile on my face.” New employees smile as they are greeted by friendly staff at a business site. 4. “Put our hands together! Is everyone ready? Let’s have Doosan pride by singing Youth Doosan Anthem!” [Explore DOOSAN]: The first part of the training program is to help new employees understand Doosan’s history, business, and its vision and strategy. In other words, these topics are the core topics new employees need to know about to become Doosan people. The corporate portfolio, which included the process of Doosan’s transformation from its humble beginnings in 1896, to its current state as a global Infrastructure Support Business (ISB), was enough to pique the interest of the new employees. The new employees also learned a song called “Youth Doosan Anthem,” which they performed at the Doosan New Year’s concert. Through song, they expressed how they feel to have become a part of the Doosan family. 25 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 25 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:06 1 “We will be the last piece of the Doosan Way puzzle!” [Be DOOSAN] The second part of the training focuses on the Traits of Doosan People. The first step is to understand what Doosan looks for in its employees through the “Proud Doosan People” course and to learn those qualities through the “D-Challenge” training program. The new employees who came to the training program with prior knowledge from the online course were able to finish the Doosan Way Transformation Model Puzzle. They also took part in an Open Communication session after learning more about the birth of the Doosan Way and a few actual cases. One of the participants said, “I thought we would have to memorize a fixed manual, but we had the opportunity to interpret the Doosan Way on our own and discuss its future direction, which was a really impressive experience. 1. “The Doosan Way starts from listening!” New employees listen to each other’s opinions attentively. 2. “The Doosan Way Change Model puzzle is finished!” New employees complete the Doosan Way Change Model Puzzle based on their online training. 3. “We are two mountains, too!” The new employees use gestures and tools to create a unique way to say “Doosan.” (“Doo” is pronounced similarly to the Korean word for the number two, and “san” has the same pronunciation as the word “mountain” in Korean). 4. “I think that’s a great idea!” Rather than pushing forward their own opinions, they listen to each other. 2 3 4 26 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 26 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:07 1 2 3 “The D-Challenge that strengthens teamwork was also an opportunity to learn about the Traits of Doosan People.” The most active discussions take place during the D-Challenge. The new employees are divided into teams and are given a task to solve. As they work through the task, they become more familiar with the Traits of Doosan People. For instance, teams are given part of a map and must find the best route by deciphering various codes. At first they seemed lost, but with time, each team finished the tasks successfully by using Priority Focus and Tenacious Execution, which are skills and characteristics Doosan people embody in solving problems. 1. “We are on the right track, right?” New employees examine the road map carefully to locate the target. 2. “Everything is going according to our plan!” New employees take confident steps forward as they look for the target. 3. “Jump up to reach a higher goal!” New employees jump up to become Doosan’s future for the next 100 years. “New employees demonstrate what they learned through their talents and passion!” The purpose of this program is to put together all the learned materials and to give a vision to the new employees. During the “Inhwa Doosan” session, employees demonstrated what they learned about the Traits of Doosan People through various performances. They were only given a short period of time to prepare for the session, but employees shared their personalities and unique talents through music, shadow theater and Nanta performances. 1. “People are the future! We are the future!” New employees pose in front of a camera as they promise to be the future of Doosan by practicing the Traits of Doosan People. 2. “Openness! Words can’t express how that feels.” but I was only included in a group scene (laughs).” Have you heard of people who go to the grocery store on horseback? He currently owns 11 horses. His approximately 16-acre horse farm, which he runs with a close friend, is about a half mile from his house. One of his favorite horses is Bong-pal-yi, a horse that’s been with him the longest. Another favorite is Dun-bak-gol, a horse that came from the Netherlands. “I go into town or shop for groceries with Dun-bak-gol. Usually horses can’t find their way home from a crowded place, but Dun-bak-gol is smart enough to find his way. This horse has even been housebroken,” Bongkyun says. His love of horses began about nine years ago. He saw a close friend ride a horse and thought to himself, “This is it! I saw my friend looking awesome on a horse and I’ve been in love with horses since then.” He doesn’t just ride horses for fun; he also rides horses competitively. So far, he has participated in competitions sponsored by the Korea Equestrian Federation and has won five medals. Bongkyun takes riding lessons on weekends. “I ride the horse as fast as I can. The feeling I get when I’m galloping with a horse is exhilarating. Words can’t express how that feels. At first, I fell off the horse a few times. So, I started working out so I could ride better. After work, I usually exercise for about three hours to be for fit enough for horse riding." Horses are Like Family; They Provide the Strength to Go On Bongkyun joined Doosan in 1982 at age 18. He has been with Doosan for 33 years, even when Doosan used to be Daewoo Shipbuilding. He says, “I had a difficult childhood, but now thanks to Doosan I’m able to enjoy my hobbies like horse riding. I’m really thankful. I wouldn’t be who I am today if I wasn’t with Doosan all these years.” Bongkyun says having his 11 horses wouldn’t have been possible if not for Doosan. “Animals never betray men, only men do. I love the loyalty of my horses. I have two wishes this year: The first one is to share my horses with all Geojedo residents and the second one is for all Doosan employees to be happy and successful.” 29 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 29 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:07 People Close-up Article by Yeon jeong Kim (Doosan Engine) and Hyung jung Kim ( Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction ) Changhee Lee, Senior Research Engineer of Doosan Engine’s New Technology Development Team, and Seongheon Yang, General Manager of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction have been included in World’s Who’s Who biographical reference. Lee was included in the IBC (International Biographical Center) of UK Cambridge last year. By being listed in this reference, Lee is also included in World’s renowned Who’s Who list including, the U.S. Marquis Who’s Who and ABI (American Biographical Institute). Yang will be a proud Doosan employee as he will also be included in the 2014 edition of Marquis Who’s Who. “I Want to Develop the World’s No. 1 Product” - Changhee Lee, Senior Research Engineer of Doosan Engine, becomes a listee in all three World’s renowned biographical references How does it feel to be listed in all three of World’s renowned biographical references? Lee received a big Christmas gift last year. He became listed in the UK’s IBC (International Biographical Center) and thus received the honor of being listed in all three of World’s renowned biographical references. However, it’s not his first time being listed. Lee, who is in charge of optimizing low-speed engine SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) and medium-speed engine SCR System Development on the Doosan Engine Future Technology Development Team, was also listed in Marquis Who’s Who in December 2011. Lee says he was very honored and ecstatic to be listed in the IBC again this year and also to be listed in all three of World’s renowned biographical references. Lee has thus far published more than 70 articles in nationally and internationally prestigious journals. He also attends a number of national and international conferences, including SAE (the Society of Automotive Engineers), AVL (Austrian- IBC Dictionary of International Biography where Changhee Lee (Senior Research Engineer, New Technology Development Team) has been listed. based automotive consulting firm for the development of powertrain systems) and Tech Forum, which focus on engine combustion technology. Since 2010, he has been acting as a member of the evaluation committee for the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy R&D project and the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning. Lee says being part of international activities gives him new ideas and insights about the latest technologies in many areas. Family and Mentor Give Him Strength to Continue Lee says he wouldn’t have been able to achieve what he has today without support from his wife. Lee married his wife in 2000 during his first year of the Mechanical Engineering doctorate program. At that time, Lee’s wife earned living expenses by giving piano lessons and playing in an orchestra. During late nights at the Hanyang University lab, Lee’s wife brought food for him and his colleagues. “I’m so thankful for my wife for being there for me and supporting me. I’m also thankful for my daughter, who practically lived in the lab with me the past four years. I’m also grateful for Professor Lee and my advising faculty for supporting me; he even laid a carpet on our lab floor so my daughter could play. I thought the best way to repay my family and mentor was with my research. So, I did the best I could.” His dissertation is entitled “A Study on the Characteristics of the Combustion and the Mixture Distribution of Liquid and Vapor in a Direct Injection Gasoline Engine,” and he has published one or two articles in SCI (Science Citation Index) journals since 2008. “I enjoy thinking and researching. Maeil Business Newspaper Reporter Jae Kwon Son introduces a concept called ‘moonshot thinking’ in his book Disruptor. Moon-shot thinking means shooting for a radical innovation that no one has imagined. My take on research is that it’s far easier to create something that’s 10 times better than enhancing an existing product by 10%, so that’s how I approach my research,” he said. Lee wants to contribute to the company by collaborating with his colleagues to produce the world’s #1 product. His dream of becoming a role model for junior researchers and a researcher who is remembered doesn’t seem far away. 30 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 30 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:07 “I enjoy thinking and researching. I’ll continue working hard.” Since joining Doosan in 1993, Yang has worked in a number of fields including the design and development of turbine/ generator’s bearing, rotordynamic design, vibration diagnosis of high speed rotating system, design of starting & loading and operation of turbine/generators. His research on turbine reliability design and efficiency design have been applied to Doosan products and businesses. In 2007, his work contributed much in developing Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction’s first self-designed turbine Boryung 1 and 2. The first self-designed project was performed successfully without any high vibration from the our own design technology. Yang, who was never a night owl, spent many sleepless nights to fulfill his responsibility as a turbine dynamic reliability expert. Since then his work has been recognized through Australia’s Eraring project, Indonesia’s Cirebon project and Thailand’s Gheco project, as all of those contracts were drawn successfully because of his recognized work in turbine technology. To meet the demands of the changing market, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has independently developed and successfully sold its first cogeneration turbine, and Yang is at the center. Yang is achieving the goal he had when he first joined Doosan, which was to “use his engineering knowledge to contribute to the company and society.” More than 50 articles have been published in top-tier journals, such as SCIE (Science Citation Index Expanded) journals, and he has actively attended international technology seminars and presented at national conferences. He wants to secure the reliability and efficiency of the turbine design and he also wants to be an engineer who is open to two-way dialogue. In addition, Yang has been interested in mentoring junior researchers to make Doosan even more competitive. “I will take responsibility for turbine dynamic reliability!” - Seong heon Yang, General Manager of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction becomes a Marquis Who’s Who listee (Photo by Seulki Lee, Media Part) 32 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 32 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:07 / Doosan’s New Technologies Pave the Way / Field Tour ② / Business Intelligence Focus / Customer Satisfaction / Technology & Innovation Jungmin Kim, Assistant Research Engineer of the Doosan Infracore E&E Validation Team, is about to conduct an engine test. 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 33 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:07 Technology & Innovation Doosan’s New Technologies Pave the Way “Embracing world-class technology and innovation is vital to our survival.” (Excerpt from the Doosan Credo) One of the ways to strengthen a company’s competiveness is new technology. When a company has an original technology it can move a step ahead of the game and dominate the market. This issue of Doosan highlights three of Doosan’s new technologies that have received much attention lately. Doosan’s New Technologies Pave the Way ① Independently Developed Mechanical Wheel Loader Transmission - DISD, Assemble Full-fledged Mass Production Article by Lian qiang Geng, DISD Wheel Loader Team Members of the DISD Development Team that made the DT501, from left: Zhongwei Liu, Peina Huang, Jun wei Song, Lian qiang Geng, and Yuan Wang. The transmission is an important part of a wheel loader, because it determines the machine’s performance. Together with the engine and axles, the transmission forms the power system. When equipment is in operation, the power system changes the engine’s deceleration to suit driving conditions and optimizes engine performance per task, allowing for a smoother ride. In addition, because wheel loaders work in a variety of environments, many global construction equipment companies develop their own parts to guarantee outstanding performance and seek a reliable supply and demand chain. DISD (Doosan Infracore Shandong), for instance, underscored challenges Chinese companies face in enhancing transmission quality and decided to independently develop its own transmission. DISD Stabilizes Supply of Parts and Strengthens Competitiveness of Equipment The transmission used in DISD wheel loader production is a mechanical transmission made up of planetary gears. This costeffective mechanical transmission now accounts for more than 90% of the market share in China. The DISD Development Team started work on developing its own independent transmission in February 2011. The DISD researchers began from the initial design, undergoing a number of procedures, including assembly simulation using CATIA 3D, FMEA (Failure Mode and Effect Analysis), and PPAP (Product Part Approval Process). The completed product is the DT501.This transmission differs from transmissions provided by local suppliers. First, the team had to address an issue with oil leakage in the design stage. To lessen oil leakage, the team replaced the transmission’s internal seal material with high-strength asbestos latex. Asbestos latex effectively prevents oil leakage because it doesn’t mix with oil and has high performance in recovery and compression. Second, the team had to minimize shift shock. To accomplish this, they used two layers of shifting valve structures to absorb shocks. Also, to prevent shift delay, the team optimized the number of holes in the piston rings. Lastly, the oil pan and gearbox were developed in an all-in-one system to avoid potential issues. The assembly method was also developed in an all-in-one system to prevent parts from being damaged. In February 2012, the first prototype of the DT501 was completed. In February 2013, performance and durability tests were completed and a pilot program was mounted on wheel loaders in three separate trials. The DT501 has received positive feedback from customers, as the team encountered few issues during the 2013 pilot period. Mass production of the product has been in full swing since January. However, the DISD Development Team is not satisfied with an independently developed mechanical transmission. It plans to assemble a prototype of an electronically controlled automatic transmission this year that meets the global standard. China’s construction equipment industry is facing its worst recession ever, but the efforts of the DISD researchers to enhance the wheel loader’s performance and quality is bringing hope for the future. *DT501: “DT” stands for Doosan Transmission, “5” indicates five-ton equipment, and “01” signifies displacement. 34 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 34 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:08 Doosan’s New Technologies Pave the Way ② APR+ Technology Will Lead the Nation - Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Enhances Power Generating Capacity to 1500MWe, Strengthens Economic Feasibility and Safety Article by Sehwan Lee (Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction) Toward the end of 2013, the National Academy of Engineering of Korea released its list of the "100 technologies and driving forces that will lead Korea’s industries in the year 2020." The National Academy of Engineering of Korea has selected leading technologies and developments that will lead the creative economy of Korea in the near future. A group of 120 experts worked for 17 months (starting in August 2012) to compile the list. The experts first named visions of the future in 2020 and selected development projects for each vision category. On this list of 100 leading technologies, two Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction technologies have been included: the Advanced Power Reactor Plus (APR+), a next-generation nuclear power plant in the Nuclear Power Category, and large gas turbine technology for the Technology and Thermal Power Category. In addition, Tae Jung Park (General Manager of the Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Steam Generator Design Team) and Jung woo Lee (Deputy General Manager of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Gas Turbine Development Project Management Team) were named driving forces who will lead Korea’s industries in 2020. This issue of Doosan introduces Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction’s APR+ technology. In 2007, the government chose the development of APR+ as the next assignment and implemented a three-stage development plan to be completed by 2015. APR+ will receive SDA (Standard Design Approval) soon, and the third stage will be in full swing. The APR+ is an upgrade of an existing model, the Korean Advanced Reactor APR1400. It has a power-generating capacity of 1500MWe, compared to the APR1400’s 1400MWe of powergenerating capacity, and has enhanced economic feasibility and safety. It also is Korea’s future reactor type to be exported. To qualify for Nu-Tech 2015, a program to develop domestic nuclear Reactor type APR+ is the next generation of Korean Reactor type designed to be an export product; its performance, safety, and transparency have been significantly strengthened. Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction plans to design and provide machinery for nuclear power plants, such as steam generator and nuclear reactor. Tae Jung Park, General Manager of the Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Component Engineering Team, has enhanced the design and production of key components in the APR+ nuclear power plant. power plants for export, the government and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power jointly led the project. Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction is in charge of its design of major component. Based on the design of the APR1400 being constructed in Korea, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction developed the knowhow to independently develop its own nuclear power plant apart from the original design company. As result, it is expected to dominate the Korean and global markets at a fast speed. The APR+ not only has improved power output, but also has optimized the design of key machineries, shortening the construction time from 41 months to 36 months. Safety has also been enhanced. In safety injection and related systems, multiple designs have been put in place. The responding capacity has also been strengthened in case of a power outage due to a passive auxiliary feedwater system design. In addition, an automatic stopping system has been installed to protect against earthquakes. This feature was implemented following the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster of 2011. The design also includes extra protection for the control center in the event of a tsunami. Tae Jung Park (Chief Engineer of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction) has been selected as one of the driving forces that will lead Korea’s industry in 2020. Park’s contribution heightened the quality of design and production of the APR+’s key machineries. In particular, Park designed and applied a moisture separator system,* lightened the weight by selecting high-strength materials, and improved the performance and safety of the equipment. Park has also secured distinctive design technology by developing a computer program that evaluates the integrated performance of steam generator. Park is an expert in designing key equipment for nuclear power plants and steam generators. He has participated in the design of reactor types developed in Korea, from the Westinghouse AP1000 to the APR+. Park has been a key player in developing the APR+, which is expected to shake up the Korean market for new nuclear power plants and function as a new platform in advancing into the global market. *Moisture separation system: As one of the key components in a nuclear power plant, the moisture separation system separates the saturated vapor that comes out of a steam generator. Once the moisture is removed from the vapor, it is transmitted to the turbine system. 35 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 35 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:08 Doosan’s New Technologies Pave the Way ③ Yeounki Bae and the Rexcon Quality Control Team have been putting in much effort to develop special high-performance concrete and improve the quality of the ready-mix concrete industry. High-strength Concrete Creates New Breed of High-rise Buildings - Doosan Engineering & Construction and Rexcon BU: Securing the Root of Competitiveness Article by Haewon Kwon (Assistant Manager, Doosan Engineering & Construction) ©윤준환 Doosan Engineering & Construction successfully pumped UHPC 120MPa to 300m high to build high-rise residential building, Doosan “We’ve the Zenith” (80 floors) in Haeundae, Busan. ©윤준환 As humans pursue beauty, humans also desire to enjoy a view. One cannot deny that the size of Korea influenced the construction of high-rise buildings in Korea. These high-rise buildings are possible because of high-strength concrete. Building a high-rise building without high-strength concrete requires more support columns, which means the building has less space for tenants. Hence, high-strength concrete must be used in buildings higher than 40 stories or in buildings that need to be durable. The standards of high-strength concrete differ per country, as shown in Figure 1. In general, as determined by KS F 4009, Korea has set high-strength concrete at 40-60 MPa (Mega Pascal) and ultra-high performance concrete at 100 MPa or above. In 2007, through consistent research and development, Doosan Engineering & Construction Rexcon BU proposed the readjustment of KS F 4009 ready-mix concrete’s high-strength concrete level and the establishment of an authenticity verification standard. Doosan Engineering & Construction received Korea’s first KS certificate in high-strength concrete (August 2007) and a KS certificate in light-weight concrete (November 2011), becoming Korea’s first company to obtain all The standards of high-strength concrete per country Standard Per Country ACI 363 (U.S.) JASS 5 (Japan) Japan Society of Civic Engineers JIS A 5308 BS 8110 (UK) Concrete standard specification KS F 4009 High strength range Greater than 41 MPa 36 N/m2(=MPa) 60-100 50-60N 30-50 MPa Greater than 40 MPa 40-60 PMa 0~18Mpa 18~40Mpa 40~60Mpa Low-strength Normal-strength High-strength 60~100Mpa Ultra-high performance Greater than Especial 36 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종1.indd 36 14. 2. 26. 오후 10:11 the KS F 4009 certificates in all categories. In December, Yeounki Bae, Deputy General Manager of the Rexcon BU’s Incheon factory, received a Minister Award from the Korea Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy at the 2013 Concrete Technology Competition and Recognition of Veterans, which is the most recognized award for veterans with the highest skills. Bae and the Rexcon Quality Control Team have put much effort into developing and commercializing high-strength and lightweight concrete. The team is also working to develop special high-performance concrete to improve the quality of the ready-mixed concrete industry. The advance of high-strength concrete has developed with admixture (e.g., mineral admixture, chemical admixture). Korean 1) high-strength concrete generally uses fly ash , mineral 2) admixture such as blast furnace slag , and polycarboxylic 3) superplasticizer . However, more is needed to make ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). Hence, to create an optimal 4) mixture considering the degree of compaction in unit volume and chemical mixture repeated tests of mineral admixture, such 5) as silica fume , were conducted. Also, tests with different mineral admixture per place of production and type were also conducted. Finally, a UHPC with improved bonding of physical and chemical mixtures was born. Based on this mixture, Doosan Engineering & Construction successfully developed Korea’s highest performing UHPC at 250MPa (December 2008). Doosan Engineering & Construction’s Rexcon BG commercialized its new UHPC to a number of Korean construction sites. In March 2011, it successfully constructed Korea’s highest residential building, Doosan’s “We’ve the Zenith” (Doosan’s apartment brand) in Haeundae, by pumping 120MPa UHPC to the highest floor (300m) at the placing speed of 30m3/h. In addition, UHPC has been used in “We’ve the Zenith” (59 floors/207m) in Ilsan, AID Reconstruction Apartments (53 floors/170m) in Haeundae, and Songdo’s representative residential building, POSCO The # 1st World (64 floors/250m) in Incheon. Currently, it is being used at the construction site of “Doosan We've Gwell City” (45 floor/152m) in Cheongju City. As such, UHPC technology is a must in constructing high-rise buildings. However, because there are no national and international guidelines in designing the mixture and construction performance, Doosan Engineering & Construction Rexcon BU’s technology and experience has secured the root of competitiveness. 1) Fly ash: Coal ash generated during the combustion of coal. It reacts with Ca (OH)2, which is the main component in making concrete. 2) Blast furnace slag: Nonmetallic waste that develops simultaneously with iron in a blast furnace. It has a secondary reaction with the main components of concrete to form C-S-H. 3) Polycarboxylic superplasticizer is a light acid agent with superior performance in dispersing cement particles at smaller dosages and retaining concrete slump without a prolonged setting time. The electrostatic repulsion plays a role in the dispersing mechanism. It has higher performance than the existing superplasticizer. 4) Degree of compaction in unit volume: The degree of compaction in a unit volume when dominating power mixtures. 5) Silica fume: A byproduct of producing silicon metal or ferrosilicon alloys. Because of its chemical and physical properties, it is a very reactive pozzolan. It is mixed as a very fine powder with concrete’s main components to produce C-S-H. When mixed with concrete, it is quite strong and durable. However, Jungmin Kim, Senior Research Engineer of the Doosan Infracore E&E Validation Team, worried the weather wasn’t cold enough. Even when jumping up and down to stay warm, Kim said nonchalantly, “The weather needs to get colder than 20 degrees below zero to test all functions of the equipment. We need to wait a few days because the weather is not cold enough now.” In Korea, Cheorwon is famous for its cold weather. During its 39 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 39 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:08 Indong Kim, Vice President of Doosan Infracore Performance Integration checks the testing situation with Hyungchul Kim, Chief Researcher of Doosan Infracore Thermal/Fuel T&D Part. They were determined to find every single problem the cold weather could cause in the equipment. During the testing period, the local temperature fell to 15 degrees below zero. Until now, low-temperature tests were performed in the cold chamber at the Incheon Reliability Center laboratory, but this environment did not reflect all the conditions a customer could face in the field. Indong Kim, Vice President of Doosan Infracore Performance Integration, who organized the field test said, “We temporarily rented a ready-mixed concrete plant in Cheorwon to conduct this test. The main purpose of this test is to see for ourselves the problems our customers can face in the field. Cold weather can cause problems with the fuel system, fumes, and electrical and electronic systems.” “Our frozen faces gave way to rosy cheeks each day. We repeated this for more than 20 days.” Starting each day at 5 a.m. for three straight weeks, the Technology Division Team worked to address customer issues while enduring the cold. Geosun Hwang, Doosan Infracore Total Performance T&D Team Research Engineer, while preparing for the engine test said, “How do you think our customer working on a mountain in the freezing cold reacts when our equipment stops working?” Hwang explained the significance of this test with this question. He said, “We had to test our equipment by putting them in similar situations as our customers deal with; that was our thinking. We collected data on the engine oil, coolant, fuel and oil temperature over several days, because many of our customers put aside the equipment for days.” During a break, Hwang took a seat near a heater to warm up and his cheeks quickly turned ruby red. By his side were T&D team employees writing up and organizing data with curled up fingers; their 20 days in the cold weather evident. “This is going to be a great learning opportunity and stepping stone for our less experienced researchers.” A total of 17 machines were tested in the cold weather, including some still in the development stage and competitors’ equipment. Hwang said, “During winter, the temperature at Cheorwon falls to 20 degrees below zero. Not only does Cheorwon provide the temperature we need, but we are also able to test our equipment in a large open space. That is the 41 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 41 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:08 Doosan Infracore R&D Technology Division conducts cold weather testing of construction machinery with engineers from Sweden. 42 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 42 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:08 biggest advantage of this location. As far as I know, this cold weather test station is the first in Korea. It’s going to be a great learning opportunity and stepping stone for less experienced researchers.” Ian Hooper, Project Manager from Scania® of Sweden, also visited the site to test Scania engines. Cold weather testing for construction equipment is also new for Scania engineers. Hooper said, “We conduct cold weather testing for trucks and buses, but conducting cold weather testing with excavators and wheel loaders is new for me. This was a great learning experience.” Kwangsoon Kwak, Assistant Research Engineer of the Doosan Infracore Total Performance T&D Team, said, “I heard many things from our customers during this testing period. Their feedback is hard to understand when you only work in laboratories. When I get back to the office I plan on continuing to resolve possible customer dissatisfaction quickly.” “I’m so proud of my colleagues for working in an orderly fashion every dawn,” commented Assistant Research Engineer Kim. “I was concerned because we hadn’t done this before and we had to make the most of our time. This experience allowed us to hear the concerns of our customers and we now have a clearer idea of what to do when we get back to our office. This has been helpful in a number of ways.” “Customer satisfaction is related to our personal growth.” The majority of the engines tested are for the Europe and U.S. markets. Because of the large number of customers in those regions, it’s important to prevent problems that could occur in the field. Hyeongho Kim, General Manager of the Doosan Infracore Total Performance T&D Team, said, “We will gather and analyze data and experiences for the purposes of enhancing our work performance. We also plan to conduct virtual testing in the future.” He also added, “Our team of researchers have now experienced the field and have a new perspective on customer satisfaction.” The cold weather testing period officially ended January 24. However, when the temperature in Cheorwon dropped to 20 degrees below zero, 10 or so researchers went back to Cheorwon to conduct additional tests. Vice President Kim said, “Our hands, feet and even our mouths froze, so we had trouble speaking, but we never lost our nerve.” Kim added, “With the mindset that the performance of our equipment is our responsibility, we pour our hearts and souls into our products.” On January 16, after testing equipment early in the morning, Doosan Infracore employees gather in one place to show their will to bring forward the best technology in the world. 기념사진을 촬영하고 있는 C/S 산하 고객지원팀과 워런티(Warranty)팀 직원들(사진 | 신원용) 43 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 43 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:08 Technology & Innovation Kyungmook Lim, Vice President of the Doosan Corporation Global Economic Intelligence Team Business Intelligence Focus Why Does Tapering in the U.S. Bring Crisis to Emerging Markets? The U.S.’s tapering, which can bring financial crisis to developing nations, has been in the news recently. What is tapering and why are developing nations being mentioned along with the crisis? Also, countries like Turkey and Brazil that have low current accounts are being identified as crisisprone countries. What is this current account that identifies countries vulnerable to crisis? As a result of the global economic crisis in 2008, the U.S. central bank, the Federal Reserve, drastically lowered the benchmark interest rate. The interest rate cannot fall below zero, but as the economy showed no signs of recovery, the U.S. Federal Reserve created a monetary policy called Quantitative Easing (QE). This policy uses the power of central banks to issue currency to buy Mortgage Backed Securities (MBS) and government bonds on the market to avoid the market rate going up, and bring liquidity in the market. QE used to bring liquidity in the market is said to have contributed to the economic recovery in the U.S. The problem is that the liquidity supplied by the U.S. Federal Reserve flowed into emerging markets. To investors expecting a high return of capital, emerging markets in developing countries were more attractive than the U.S. market, which brought the crisis in the first place. As a result, the domestic market enjoyed great prosperity. When the economic cycle is booming there is a tendency to spend more than a nation can produce, which brings deficit. In economic terms, this is called a current account deficit. When a household is in deficit, it uses savings or takes loans; similarly, when a country is in current account deficit it borrows currency from abroad or uses its foreign assets. In other words, to a country in current account deficit, it is important to attract foreign assets home as there are insufficient foreign assets. When the U.S. Federal Reserve released funds with low interest rates it was easy for developing countries to borrow money. However, as the U.S. economy is recovering, the U.S. Federal Reserve is reducing the QE. Such a reduction in QE is referred to as tapering. As asset purchases are being cut down, the liquidity of the global market is gradually decreasing. As liquidity decreases, the bond agencies apply more stringent standards in lending money. Here, the most important thing is the current account situation. A country in debt may not have issues if the country’s current account is in surplus, but, it becomes an issue if a country is in current account deficit, because it may not be able to pay off its debt. Equally, it’s not easy to give a loan to a household that has debt and is spending more than it is earning. If a country loses its trust in the global financial market as a result of a current account deficit, then stock and bond investors pull out their money, which shakes up the financial and foreign exchange markets. This phenomenon can cause crisis in developing countries. As the situation gets worse it becomes more difficult to get an extension (in paying debt) or to take out a new foreign loan. A lack of foreign currency means that a country cannot import necessary raw materials and essential goods, which causes the exchange rate to soar, prices to rise, and the whole country to face a crisis. Korea’s 1997 financial crisis was the result of a lack of foreign currency. Of course, having a current account deficit is not always a bad thing. A household with stable income can take out a loan to buy a house or car. Thus, for rapidly growing countries with stable future revenue, having a current account deficit is not a problem. So, it’s important to understand the nature of a current account deficit. When the global financial market is at unrest it becomes hard to make a rational judgment. When anxiety spreads among investors the global financial market is bound to fluctuate. Until it becomes possible to judge the emerging markets clearly, the global financial market will continue to rise and fall. 45 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 45 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:08 Technology & Innovation Article by Hyun jung Kim (Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction) Customer Satisfaction The Customer Support and Warranty Teams of the C/S Division pose for a picture. (Photos by Wonyoung Shin, Administration Center Media Part) “CS includes customer service as well as service, support, and marketing” - Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Manages Customer Support Team and Warranty Team Under C/S First, we provide customer value from the start of warrant until the disposal of a power plant all the way through the power plant’s lifecycle. Second, we have a customer-oriented consciousness. We seek to meet customer expectations at the point of contact and provide value that far exceeds our competitors. As such, our vision to be a “Global Leader in Power & Water” means we aim to provide greater value to our customers, which is Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction C/S’s core strategy. Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction recently created the C/S division to manage customer relations comprehensively and meet customer satisfaction leading to After Market Business, both of which were previously taken care of by each business group. There are two teams under C/S. The Customer Support Team is in charge of setting up CS strategies, executing customer satisfaction projects and Aftermarket. The Warranty Team is responsible for defects-warranty of domestic power plants. Both teams consist of members who have extensive experience in planning, process control and production at home and abroad. Sanghoon Park, C/S Division Vice President, said, “Many think C/S means customer satisfaction, but our principle is to provide higher value to our customer. Because of this, C/S includes all sectors that relate to our clients, including service, support and marketing.” Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction’s C/S Division plans to accompany its usual annual survey with client interviews to better understand and respond to their voices and heighten customer satisfaction. Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction C/S Division is currently establishing its management system, but the division is soon expected to create a positive cycle where increased customer satisfaction brings new business opportunities. Vice President Sanghoon Park says, “Customer service needs to change constantly to reflect the market and the voice of the customer.” 46 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 46 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:08 / Shared Growth with Doosan Doosan Yonkang Foundation provides recipients of “Annual Science Teacher Award” opportunities to experience scientific technology and educational fields abroad. This issue of Doosan introduces how Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction and Doosan Engineering & Construction have accomplished Shared Growth with their suppliers. Article by Hyun jung Kim (Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction) and Jinhee Kwon (Doosan Engineering & Construction) Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Ties Together Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Suppliers to Make Smart Factories Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has implemented a Shared Growth Program in four ways: Competitiveness Support, Financial Support, Overseas Expansion Support, and Communication Support. In particular, through Shared Productivity, which is a part of Competitiveness Support, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction is in the process of constructing a Smart Factory and Industry Innovation 3.0 Business Plan with secondary and tertiary suppliers. This case study covers the creation of a Smart Factory in detail under the theme of “secondary and tertiary suppliers transform with EM Korea.” EM Korea is one of the primary suppliers, as it supplies largesize generator unit parts and nuclear power construction materials to Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction. EM Korea has been a major supplier for Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction for 10 years. Through Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction’s support, EM Korea has accomplished consistent innovation and is moving forward to reach a global standard. While functioning as the main axis of the Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Cooperation Council, steadily growing EM Korea is achieving multidimensional shared growth. In particular, EM Korea’s Smart Factory project has been more meaningful this year as the project brought innovation to secondary and tertiary suppliers. The Smart Factory project is an innovative project launched to improve product quality. The Smart Factory project ties primary, secondary and tertiary suppliers into one to improve the work environment and production process. Experts examine the production process and work environment and provide guidance for technical issues to bring quality improvement to enhance overall product quality and productivity. Adjunct Professor Gu ju Hwang of Changwon National University’s Dept. of Industrial and Systems Engineering, The “2013 Shared Growth Compilation of Excellent Cases,” published by Korea's National Commission for Corporate Partnership, includes 10 cases of shared growth, including success stories from Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction and Doosan Engineering & Construction. 48 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 48 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:08 was invited to be an external consultant on the Innovation Team, which launched last July. EM Korea brought its secondary suppliers together: Gyeongcheon Machines, Samhyun Precision Manufacturing and Woobong Tech. Since the Innovation Team was officially launched, EM Korea worked on the 5S initiative for three months until early October. 5S stands for “Sort, Straighten, Shine, Standardize and Sustain,” which means that all materials in the factory should be in the right place in the right amount and in the right container. It also means the work environment should be organized and clean. This initiative has brought big changes to the secondary and tertiary suppliers that participated in this initiative. When the EM Korea Innovation Team reported its accomplishments after 13 weeks, the results far exceeded expectations. Gyeongcheon Machines decreased its inventory materials, reduced the time to prepare tools and materials, and significantly reduced material transport time. Not only did work productivity increase, the work environment became more pleasant for employees and the company culture changed positively. Samhyun Precision Manufacturing had similar results, but one of its biggest accomplishments was that employees became more confident in innovative activities. Woobong Tech increased the quality of its product by 80%. The participating companies shared their aspirations to continue to address issues and make even smarter factories. When Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction created a small window of opportunity, the suppliers transformed that opportunity to positive results. As they become more competitive on their own, they, in turn, help Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, which brings even greater possibilities. Through the initiative, the companies discovered that they too can make a better future. Doosan Engineering & Construction Recognized as Industry’s First Company to Implement Shared Growth Initiative Doosan Engineering & Construction’s Shared Growth Initiative is equally as diverse as Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction’s programs. Since 2007, Doosan Engineering & Construction has been participating in Habitat for Humanity® with suppliers in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, Korea. Doosan Engineering & Construction and its suppliers (that have been in partnership for more than a decade) have created a self-sustaining organization called Doowoo Organization, and the Habitat for Humanity project is one of their activities. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that builds homes for people in need, which fits in well with the strengths of Doosan Engineering & Construction and its suppliers. Doosan Engineering & Construction is also concerned with suppliers’ employee benefits. Since 2011, Doosan has partnered with Chung Ang University Hospital to provide low-cost health screenings to suppliers’ employees, which has helped save lives. In one case, an executive of a supplier was diagnosed with early stage colorectal cancer. After two surgeries he was able to return to work. He says, “I wouldn’t have gone for a health screening if Doosan Engineering & Construction didn’t provide the service.” He was grateful for the health screening when he first heard the diagnosis. This experience strengthened Doosan Engineering & Construction’s partnership with that supplier, and Doosan Engineering & Construction was able to establish stronger relations with other suppliers as a result. The Shared Growth Initiative is a program launched to share profit with suppliers when new technology is developed. When the cost of production is reduced or profits increase (depending on the actual outcome), contributing companies are compensated up to 50%. Thanks to these consistent efforts, in May 2012, Doosan Engineering & Construction received the industry’s first certificate for implementing the initiative. In addition, to boost morale and bring safety awareness to employees, Doosan Engineering & Construction holds an annual “Safety Patrol” event for field employees, and, to comply with fair trade laws, Doosan voluntarily performs a Fair Trade Compliance Program. Doosan is the flagship company, as it provides financial support along with the Competitiveness Support Team to help suppliers improve their technology. Students who participated in the Doosan Children Art Program look at their photos taken during “Photo Expedition Time.” Bringing Out Creativity Through Culture & Art This year’s Children Art School was focused on “Art Gallery and Performance” and “Art and Photo Production.” On the first day, students visited the National Museum of Contemporary Art to see the contemporary art exhibition, and afterward watched a musical, the “Wedding Singer,” at the Doosan Art Center. On the second day, students participated in “I am a Portrait Artist,” a class where they drew a picture of a friend on an OHP film which was then colored in. Their art work was hung in the Doosan Art Center lobby. Students also learned to take photos during “Photo Expedition Time,” by taking photos based on a theme of their choice. They used the camera’s view finder to look at the subject they were taking photos of. On the last day of the program, students visited the Doosan Gallery to enjoy art pieces and while there, learned some etiquette. Their last stop was Yonkang Hall, a musical theater, to see “Space 111.” Students learned about special stage effects and etiquette while watching the theater performance. - Doosan Yonkang Foundation Invites Local Elementary School Students for Culture & Art Education “This is my first time visiting an art gallery and watching a musical. I learned about theater etiquette. I think I’ve grown up a bit!” Doosan hosted its 5th annual Doosan Children Art School January 26-28. This year, 40 students from Chunbuk Elementary School in Boryeong, Chungnam, participated in the program. The Doosan Children Art School is hosted by Doosan, and jointly organized by the Doosan Yonkang Foundation and the Korea Mecenat Association. The purpose of the program is to provide culture and art education and experience to elementary school students who attend schools in areas with relatively less culture and art programs. Students Explore Independently to Build Self-confidence One of the biggest strengths of the Children Art School is that it encourages students to engage in exploration on their own so they can build selfconfidence. A student who participated in the program this year said, “I saw a musical for the first time. It was impressive to see [performers] sing and dance at the same time. I think it was more memorable because we watched the musical and got to look around the theater and the stage and take pictures.” One of the teachers who attended the program said, “I’m happy to see our students learn, see and feel new things through this opportunity. They were able to experience art with their whole body, which isn’t always possible in a classroom.” Such a comment resonated among the teachers. 50 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 50 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:08 Article by Se-Hwan Lee (Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction) Bringing the Latest CSR Trends and CSR Strategies Article by Eunjoo Kim (Doosan Infracore) Thank You for Sharing - Doosan Infracore’s 2nd CSR Award Ceremony - Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Published the First CSR Intelligence Clipping “CSR (corporate social responsibility) seems to be the basis of our corporate management initiatives. How is CSR different from local community service or volunteering? What’s the extent of CSR?” Corporate social responsibility has become a popular term. People agree that term is important but have difficulties in understanding. To promote CSR awareness and active engagement amongst our employees, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction is now publishing a newsletter called CSR Intelligence Clipping. This newsletter will be released bimonthly in Korean and every quarter in English in a PDF format and will be shared via e-mail with not only the employees here in Korea at Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, but will be sent to our overseas subsidiaries as well on a regular basis. CSR team plans to have it constantly upgraded by covering the recent CSR activities carried out each quarter and reflecting the readers’ opinions. The coverage will mostly be about the Doosan Group and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction’s CSR strategic framework, activities and major CSR trends, all of which will be provided to help our subsidiaries plan the direction of their CSR initiatives. A CSR glossary will also be included to help provide a better understanding on the subject, as well as a cartoon strip and other various information, such as recent developments or changes in the CSR team and a section to give special thanks to the people who helped with creating the clipping. According to CSR Intelligence Clipping, CSR is defined as a business activity based on stakeholders who build long-term coexistence relationship, and take responsibility for company’s mid and longterm raising value. In line with the CSR strategic approach, the goal is to become the ‘Fortune’s Most Admired Global Company in 2020’. More specifically, it is proposed to be 1) people-centered, to 2) establish reliable management, and to be 3) (engaged in) responsible participation in order to support sustained growth with responsibility. The clipping also includes some contents like regional CSR trends (policies, legal regulations, other companies’ best practices & results). The publication of such a clipping will help to promote the sharing of information and support our company’s proactive and continuous CSR efforts. ‘CSR Intelligence Clipping’, published by Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction both in Korean and English, includes CSR strategy as well as internal and external latest CSR trends. Son said, “Through the Dream School mentoring program, I have a better understanding of my own children. I’m happy to have received this award, and I hope to motivate more people to become mentors.” Son received the Individual Division Award last year for participating in a Junior Engineering School, where he taught principles of science to children at a children’s hospital. “I was worried the children at the hospital would be worn out, but they followed the program well. It was a very rewarding experience.” The Corporate R&D Division HR Team that received the Club Division Award is made up of employees who joined the company in 2012. They take turns and visit study groups of nearby communities every other week. Hwang, who received the award on behalf of the team said, “We will spend this award on buying materials for the study groups.” 51 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 51 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:08 With Doosan Doosan Yonkang Foundation Takes Science Teachers on Academic Field Trip “People are the future, Science is the future, Education is the future!” - The 8th Doosan Yonkang Foundation Academic Field Trip for Science Teachers - Field trip to Changwon Doosan Industrial Park, and Osaka, Japan, Science, Technology and Education centers “People are the future, science is the future and education is the future,” shouted science teachers who participated in the 8th Doosan Yonkang Foundation science teacher field visit program. Since 2007, Doosan’s Yonkang Foundation has invited the recipients of the “Science Teacher of the Year” to participate in an Academic Field Trip Program that takes them to experience science, technology and education overseas. This program is hosted by the Korea Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and is supervised by the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science & Creativity. This year, 36 teachers were invited to visit Doosan Industrial Park in Changwon, Kyungnam and various science-related museums and high schools that specialize in science in Osaka, Japan. <Editor’s note> Chairman of Doosan Yonkang Foundation, Yong Hyun Park, gives a welcome greeting to the participating teachers at the Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Guest House. Proud Teacher! Proud Doosan! - Minyeo Lim /Jeonbuk Bongdong Elementary School Science Teacher Blacksmiths’ Chorus Full of Workmanship Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, Doosan Engine, and Doosan DST, are all located in Changwon, Korea. After putting on safety helmets, we started our field trip with a tour of the Doosan Industrial Park. As soon as we walked into the Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Welding Plant, Verdi’s rhythmical and grand “Anvil Chorus (Chorus of the Blacksmith)” filled my head. Watching workers weld a piece of steel with pressure that weighs more than 200,000 adults was enough to capture our attention. During the tour around the nuclear power plant, we were told it takes three years to create the steam generator and two-and-a-half years to develop the reactor. When employees told us how they feel when they send out a finished product they have spent so much time and effort on, I could sense their workmanship. We felt proud as we rode in armored vehicles at Doosan DST and when we saw an engine the size of a playground (an engine for large ships) at Doosan Engine. During the welcome dinner and orientation held on our first night, Chairman of Doosan Yonkang Foundation, Yong Hyun Park, greeted and welcomed us with a warm smile. Chairman Park and the rest of the Doosan family treated us like neighbors. Warm welcomes made the teachers shout, “Proud Teachers! Proud Doosan!” from the very first night and from that day on, we fell in love with Doosan. Osaka Science Museum Tour Returns Teachers to Childhood Our full-fledged program began when we went to Japan. The Osaka Science Museum provides space to experience our knowledge on the cosmos, chemicals, electricity and energy. The curator informed us that 700,000 people visit the museum annually and that one-third of the visitors are On the first day of the Academic Field Trip for the science teachers, the teachers visited Heavy Industries & Construction’s Office of Public Relations. Her ceaseless passion and ideas have contributed to the development of Education on Invention, development of teaching materials on invention, textbooks on experiencing invention and many others. Her school also won the 35th Jeollabukdo Student Science Invention Contest. Chairman of Doosan Yonkang Foundation, Yong Hyun Park, accompanied the teachers from the very first day to the last day and engaged in in-depth conversations with the teachers, emphasizing the importance of education. students. When I turned back to look at our group upon hearing this, I saw members of our group transforming into young children. Their eyes were beaming and they clapped hands occasionally with amusement. In one corner, a group of Japanese children experienced how force changes in varying degrees depending on the number of pulleys. Others built an arched bridge to learn about the center of gravity. These children were learning principles of science in such a natural way. Bernoulli’s principle—an increase in a liquid’s speed creates a pressure decrease—is somewhat difficult to understand, but this principle was demonstrated with an easy to understand model (a fan hooked to the top of a long pipe and a quickly turning fan forced a ball on the bottom of the pipe to move upward). What makes adults and children alike want to visit this place? Yes, state-ofthe-art equipment is important, but I was moved by the explanation provided by the museum curator, who stressed the importance of providing opportunities to experience principles of science and continuously researching to achieve this goal. While touring the museum we admired equipment that seemed to have been there for a long time, yet was still fully functioning. We wondered how that could be. At that moment, we saw an elderly employee on his knees fixing equipment with great care. While we were told that the museum’s principle is to immediately fix broken equipment, the scene spoke volumes. Japanese Schools Recognize Individual Differences A teacher wearing a white gown opened the gate of Osaka Kochi Super Science High School and welcomed us with a big smile; this marked the beginning of our high school tour. Osaka Kochi SSHS is a prestigious high school founded about 100 years ago. With its motto, “Freedom and Creation,” the school emphasizes an education that teaches students to have responsibilities while allowing them to express their individuality through a relaxed dress code. Perhaps for these reasons there were active student organizations and many events were run and organized by the students themselves. We also had an opportunity to visit a classroom that was carrying out a project. At SSHS, students are allowed to select a project of their choice at the beginning of the year. When we visited the class, students were having a discussion on the “Condition of sunlight on red bean growth.” Students’ notepads were filled with data and graphs. Another team of students worked on experiments where they adjusted independent variables (changing the values of independent variables influences the outcome of a given model or experiment). While observing students’ activities, I could see that this was a true self-directed learning process. One of the students said her dream is to be a “composer who loves quantum mechanics.” That evening, after observing an education system that acknowledges students’ unique differences, I became lost in thought. Wrapping Up the Field Trip During the Academic Field Trip, we were able to thoroughly enjoy what Osaka has to offer courtesy of Doosan’s Yonkang Foundation. They took great care of us. Thanks to the foundation, we were able to try Japanese steamed rice cakes backed by 300 years of tradition, delicious ice cream after exploring the Osaka Castle and hot chocolate at the Golden Pavilion. They even made 54 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 54 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:09 Science teachers visit Osaka Kochi Super Science High School, a prestigious private high school that specializes in technology, science and math, and discuss science education with SSHS teachers. A surprise birthday party was held for a teacher on the last day dinner banquet. sure we had souvenirs to take back after the trip. I was especially impressed to see Chairman of Doosan Yonkang Foundation, Yong Hyun Park, accompanying us throughout the whole trip. His free and easy style made us at ease and his dedication made me proud to be a teacher. Now I look forward to going back to our school to share what I experienced through this trip; reflecting back on what Doosan has done for us, I want to share with my students as much as possible. The day after I came back from the trip, I visited a nearby library to check out A Compass to Fulfillment: Passion and Spirituality in Life and Business. I wanted to learn how the author keeps his words consistent with his actions. I wonder if this change is as a result of Doosan’s corporate philosophy, “People are our future,” and the positive thinking the Chairman emphasized: “Your thoughts create all things.” Reconnecting to Childhood Dreams and Building the Future - Juchang Kim, a teacher at Gifted and Talented Institute affiliated with the Office of Education Support in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, Korea; he is currently working at the Office of Education Support in Suwon. Raising Nobel Prize Laureates from an Early Age So far, Japan has had 19 Nobel Prize laureates. There are seven laureates in Chemistry; seven in Physics; two in Physiology or Medicine; one in Peace; and two in Literature. The Fields Medal, referred to as the Nobel Prize in Mathematics (awarded once every four years), has been given out to three Japanese mathematicians. Such a record is unprecedented in Asia. I often read in the news about Korean students winning awards at various international math and science competitions. Among three East Asian countries, Korean students’ performance does not fall behind that of Japan and China. However, Korea has yet to produce a Nobel Prize laureate. Why is that? I found the answer during the Doosan Yonkang Foundation Academic Field Trip. < About the author > Juchang Kim, for the past three years, has participated in the Research Association for Teachers in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics) of the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science & Creativity. His interests lie in popularizing mathematics education as well as preparing students in science and invention competitions. 55 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 55 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:09 Teachers check out an exhibit at the Osaka Science Museum. I was able to find the answer to my question while visiting the Osaka Science Museum and the Kobe Municipal Science Museum for Youth. At first sight, with both buildings being much smaller and less elaborate than science museums in Korea, I set my expectations low. However, while taking the tour inside the museums, I quickly realized I was wrong. When I take students to science museums in Korea, I always lament the lack of experiential learning. It’s great to have many types of equipment to look at, but I always thought there could be more facilities in which students can learn by doing. The two science museums in Japan have equipment that allows students to have hands-on experience in science. Students there were learning about the pulley principle and sound waves with their bodies. Almost all the equipment could be learned through experience and students could confirm what they’ve learned by reading the manual next to the equipment; it was as if a science class had been transferred to a museum. Children at the museum looked both amused and serious while learning. Science education in Korea takes a spiral approach; in other words, what students learn in elementary school repeats in middle and high school, the material differing only in breadth and depth. But even if it’s the same content, depending on how students learn, the learning outcome can be entirely different. A Korean student in fifth grade will learn that magnets and currents have magnetic fields by conducting two separate tests. Japanese middle and high school students are able to predict the direction of the magnetic field by conducting the two tests; this is because hands-on experience allows for more in-depth learning. The experimental apparatus that shows the magnetic field of the magnet has been used in Science Festivals in Korea. Although such an apparatus is interesting, the effects are short-lived. An environment in which students can play with the equipment and learn by doing is what we need. I believe this small difference is what makes science education in Korea and Japan different. The Place I Found My Childhood Dream: Shimadzu Factory The Shimadzu Factory Entrepreneurship Memorial Museum in Kyoto, Japan, is a museum where you can feel the spirit of entrepreneurship and invention. Science teachers look around the facilities at the Kobe Municipal Science Museum for Youth. Teachers visiting the Shimadzu Factory at the Kyoto Entrepreneurship Memorial Museum observe demonstration of a tool displayed in the museum’s resource room. 56 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 56 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:09 Teachers take a picture in front of the Science Museum at the Kobe Municipal Science Museum for Youth. Hearing an explanation from the director and seeing more than 100 medical devices that the Shimadzu family (father and son) have collected put us in awe. When we were left to explore the museum on our own, a poster caught my eye. There was a Japanese child wearing a Kimono looking inside a DeLorean® (the time-traveling car featured in the “Back to the Future” trilogy). The director of the museum explained that the poster was designed to show Shimadzu’s curiosity when he was a child. The first of the “Back to the Future” movies came out in 1985, while the last “Back to the Future” movie was released in 1990. This trilogy is about a man who travels in time. I dreamed of becoming a scientist when I saw this movie in elementary school. Even now, when I have a problem or run out of new ideas I go back to these movies. So, I was ecstatic to see a “Back to the Future” poster, a movie that gave me a dream to be an engineer, in an unexpected place. I, too, liked to assemble machines like Shimadzu; at the museum, I was able to resolve a question I had about the movie. In the movie, the DeLorean gets hit by lightning and a scientist who goes by “Doc” says, “No wonder this circuit failed. It says ‘Made in Japan.'” The other main character says, “What do you mean, Doc? All the best stuff is made in Japan.” At the time, I didn’t know why the main character was talking about Japan-made products. I thought, “Products made in Korea are pretty good too.” But, after 20 years, and coming to work for Doosan, I came to realize what that main character meant. I came to dream about becoming a scientist after watching a movie; similar to my case, my students will also make a small discovery on their own or run into a new experience that will make them want to become scientists. I came to envy the Japanese educational environment that acknowledges children’s curiosity and provides full support so they can pursue their curiosity. Knowing that transformation begins from small steps, from me and our group of teachers who participated in this field trip as well as all educators in Korea, I became lighthearted. With small changes I believe we can provide a sound environment where our children can keep their dream of becoming future scientists. This poster hangs on a wall in the Shimadzu Factory at the Kyoto Entrepreneurship Memorial Museum. You can see a DeLorean, a car featured in the “Back to the Future” trilogy. The poster was designed by the Shimadzu Factory. 57 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 57 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:09 With Doosan Organized by Jueui Hong (Doosan Corporation) Global Report In this edition of Global Report, Hosung Kim, a reporter from Belgium, introduces the Frameries Edition, a quarterly newsletter published by DIEU. Reporter Eun Sook Lee from the United Arab Emirates explains Saudi Arabia’s wedding culture. [Belgium] Frameries Edition Newsletter Connects DIEU Employees and Families By Hosung Kim, DIEU Operations Deputy Manager To help readers understand the Doosan Way, English and French versions of the animation were also added. Doosan Infracore’s Frameries, Belgium, plant (DIEU: Doosan Infracore Europe S.A.) not only shares the corporation’s news with employees, but also shares it with their families. For this purpose, DIEU began to publish a quarterly newsletter called the Frameries Edition starting in December 2012. DIEU staff volunteer to write articles for the newsletter. The Frameries Edition is about 10 pages long and each issue is mailed to employees’ home addresses. Below is the table of contents for an issue published in November 2013. The Frameries Edition is DIEU’s quarterly newsletter that allows employees and their families to engage in open communication. 1. Message from the Primary Plant Manager 2. Doosan Way Guide 3. EHS Letter from Group Chairman 4. Primary Plant Maintenance Team and Message on Accident Prevention 5. Results of Process Improvement Activities and Interviews 6. Task of Material Management Team 7. Production Process 8. Introducing a New Wheel Loader Model: K-Model 9. Origin of Halloween 10. IT Trends The day the DIEU newsletter arrives in the mail, DIEU employees and their families gather around the dinner table. The newsletter generates much conversation about the Doosan Way. Kids ask their parents about the difference between the Material Management Team and the Maintenance Team and the structure of the wheel loader. They also look to see if their family members are included in any of the photos. Pictures of familiar faces prompt kids to ask about the acquaintances’ latest news and ask their parents if they can see them. Looking through the latest IT trends section, kids beg their parents to get them the latest gadget. The DIEU families get so into the newsletter they forget that the food on the table is getting cold. The Frameries Edition has become an exciting medium that connects coworkers and family members alike. 58 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 58 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:09 [UAE] Saudi Arabian Style Wedding, Separate Reception for Male and Female Guests Eun Sook Lee reports from the United Arab Emirates (Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction EPC BG Middle East Operation Center Manager) A few years ago, I was invited to a friend’s wedding when I attended high school in the Middle East. One of the unique characteristics of the wedding was that all guests were women and I was the only Asian. It was interesting to see how a wedding could only have female guests, but I was more surprised to learn that I could not see the groom. Turns out, the wedding culture in Islamic countries like Saudi Arabia is very different from Korea’s wedding culture. In Islamic countries, religious leaders preside over the ceremony and only about three witnesses, along with the bride and groom, attend the main ceremony (typically the witnesses are three men or two women and a man). A reception follows the main ceremony at a nearby hotel, but there are two separate receptions for male and female guests. Once the female guests enter their reception hall, they take off their Abayas (loose overgarment women wear to cover their body) and show off their colorful dresses and accessories. Their colorful dresses are gorgeous, but what stands out more is their makeup, which emphasizes their facial features and enhances their beauty. When guests enter the reception hall, they give cheek kisses and nose-to-nose kisses to the bride and groom’s families. The family of the bride and groom enters the reception hall long after they greet the guests. Food is served once all the guests arrive. A popular menu is Mandi, which is a traditional Arab dish made of meat and rice (the meat is usually cooked in a tandoor, which is a special kind of oven in the ground). Once guests finish eating, male and Male wedding guests chat at a Saudi Arabia wedding reception. female guests celebrate the wedding by dancing the traditional dance, separately. The wedding ends when the bride and groom leave the reception. As the female guests leave the reception, they put their Abayas back on. My curiosity about the men’s side of things was resolved after Jung Tae Kim, General Manager of EPC BG Middle East Operation Center, attended a Saudi Arabia branch employee’s son’s wedding. He too was unable to see the bride and was only Jung Tae Kim, General Manager of EPC BG able to participate in the men’s reception Middle East Operation Center (left), takes a picture with a member of the host family with other male guests and the host during a wedding. families. The wedding Kim attended was the groom’s wedding with his third wife, but nothing in particular was different from other weddings (Saudi Arabia allows polygamy and men can have up to four wives). Wedding culture varies depending on religion and locations, but the one common thread through all weddings is that it’s a day for families and friends to come together to celebrate the unity of a couple. If you remember this fact, any wedding is a day of celebration, wherever you are. Mandi, a traditional Arab food, is served at the wedding reception. 59 두산사보영문 2014.02내지-최종.indd 59 14. 2. 26. 오후 9:09 Doosan News “The Doosan Way is Real Now!” Conducting Day-to-day Operations with the Doosan Way - Board of Directors Attends Workshops, Awards Best Practices and Designates CORE Agents - Conducting Doosan Way Survey for Factory Staff appointment the new second term CORE Agents (CAs) January Doosan Infracore held a workshop and ceremony to 21-22 at Doosan Tower.
