GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT PROFILE:
PRESERVE GOLF CLUB AT SANTA LUCIA PRESERVE
CARMEL, CA
PRESERVE GOLF CLUB AT SANTA LUCIA PRESERVE & COMMUNITY
The Santa Lucia Preserve (“The Preserve”) is a private community nestled in the Santa Lucia Mountains and is
just minutes from California's fabled Highway 1 and popular tourist destinations Carmel-by-the-Sea, Monterey
and Big Sur.
Considered by Travel & Leisure to be one of the nation’s most treasured communities, the Santa Lucia Preserve
encompasses the last of central California’s great Mexican land grants.
The Preserve is an owner-governed community that is dedicated to appreciating and respecting the natural
beauty of The Preserve and its geographical, historical, and cultural setting. The Preserve’s 20,000 acres are
home to a lively community of 300 families and property owners.
They relish living, learning, playing and sharing with family and friends in the middle of this unspoiled land.
They are sheltered from the ocean fog by the surrounding mountains; the pleasant year-round climate allows the
families to enjoy a rich diversity of outdoor recreation, entertainment, cultural events and quiet relaxation.
This is a closely-knit community, which shares stewardship of the land and its traditions. Part of the community
is the Santa Lucia Conservancy, which protects the Preserve’s landscape through permanent conservation deeds
and easements on 90 percent of the land. These 31 square miles of oak woodlands, savannas, grasslands,
wetlands, redwood forests and stands of Monterey pine rise from 100 to 3,000 feet above sea level. They hold
54 distinct habitats virtually hidden from outside view by the surrounding ridges of the Santa Lucia Range,
which plunges into the sea at Big Sur.
The Preserve has a strong culture, the cornerstones of which are a reverence for the majestic landscape of
California’s coastal foothills, a respect for the rich Spanish/Mexican traditions of Monterey history and a joy in
the pleasures of sharing unique experiences with family and friends. It is unlike any other residential
community in the Nation.
The challenging, Fazio-designed, top-100 golf course is carved out of The Preserve’s natural terrain. Members
and their guests play challenging golf on a walk through the full spectrum of nature. Throughout 365 acres the
course wanders by towering oaks, through rolling savannahs, around wetlands and across seasonal streams
framed by the majestic Santa Lucia range. Golfers can rarely see the next hole, let alone other golfers and tee
times are not required. As Tom Fazio has remarked about the course layout, “This is as good as it gets; you
really don’t need me. The course is already here.”

and Tiger Woods. The club hosted the Houston Champions International (now the Shell Houston Open) five times between 1966 and
1971, counting among its champions Roberto De Vicenzo, Hubert Green and Arnold Palmer. Additionally, two Southern Amateurs
have been conducted at Champions, with future major champions Ben Crenshaw and Bob Tway earning victories in 1973 and 1980,
respectively.
Our Facilities – Champions Golf Club consists of two, 18-hole championship golf courses located on the Northwest side of Houston.
The Cypress Creek Course, designed by Ralph Plummer, opened in 1957 and is regularly touted as one of the best golf courses in the
state of Texas. The turfgrass consists of 419 bermuda rough, tees, and fairways, and Champion Ultradwarf greens. The Jack Rabbit
Course, originally designed by George Fazio in 1964 and completely renovated by Tom Fazio in 2002, offers a very unique playing
experience for this region. By introducing some elevation changes and depth to the property, Fazio and his crew brought more of an
Australian Sandbelt style that provides a welcomed contrast to south Texas. The turfgrass on this course consists of TifSport bermuda
rough, tees, and fairways, and TifEagle Ultradwarf greens.
Our Future – Champions was recently selected as the host site for the 75 th U.S. Women’s Open in 2020.
Considered the world’s premier women’s golf championship, the U.S. Women’s Open is one of 13 national championships conducted
