"Steam bath,"
Bruce Jay
F rie drn an's
bizarre comedy
about life after death, will be.
broadcast Monday, August 23,
at 10 P.M. on KUHT, channel 8
television.
The production, adapted for
TV by the author, stars Bill
Bixby, Valerie Perrine, and Jose
Perez and was directed by Burt
Brinckerhoff.
The setting for the play is a
New York steamroom, where an
odd assortment of characters including an old timer who's seen
and done everything, two gay
dancers, a flighty girl, and a
former art appreciation teacher
at the police academy - are
gathered.
The dialogue is razor sharp as
the group discusses exactly why
they are there, until gradually
they realize that they have died
and are in limbo. Their only
escape lies in the hands of the
Puerto Rican attendant, who
happens to be God.
.
'''We didn't do Friedman's
work for sensationalism," said
execu tive producer Norman
Lloyd, "but because it is enter-
taining, vastly amusing, with a
serious theme.
•
Its milieu is New York, but
its 'appeal is universal. People
everywhere can identify with its
situations, and the characters are
richly drawn."
Bill Bixby, who plays Tandy,
the art instructor,
stars in
the syndicated television series,
"The Magician," and will co-host
"The Puzzle Children," a special
on learning disabilities set to
air on P.B.S. in October.
Valerie Perrine (Meredith)
won critical acclaim for her role
in the movie, "Lenny," and has
recently starred in ''W.C. Fields
and Me." Jose Perez (attendant)
most recently starred in the
television
series,
"On the
Rocks."
"Steambath
stirred controversy when it was first aired
by some public television stations in 1973. In a review
in the Washington Post, Alan
M. Kriegsman said, "Those who
detect profanation
in 'Stearnbath' has missed the author's
intention competely ....
When
you strip away all the sassiness
and the horsing- around, underneath there's nothing but an
old-fashioned
morality
play."
John J. O'Connor of the
New York Times said, "In
addition to being outrageous, it
is serious ....
Mr. Friedman's
comedy of manic despair has
been given an exceptionally
rewarding form in this television
production."
. "Steambath"
is a presen tation of "Hollywood Television
Theater," produced at KCET,
Los Angeles. Executive producer
is Norman Lloyd.

Networks
Will Include
R~gular Gay
Characters
The national television networks are scheduling regular gay
characters in several of the new
. fall TV series.
Both "SNIP" and the "Nancy
Walker Show" will have openlygay people in the episodes
each week.
Several series, notably "Barney Miller," during the past year
had occassional appearances by
gay characters .
. The difference between this
year and last year, however, is
that the gay people are regulars.
"SNIP" on NBC is a situation
comedy revolving around a hair
salon. The star of the show is
straight, but some of his coworkers are gay. The National
Gay Task Force has a representative on the set to observe
each filming, at the invitation of
the producers and NBC.
Back in Houston, Katahdin
Productions
and Steve Fredericks are continuing their efforts
to produce and nationally-syndicate an all-gay program. (Steve

Productions, and Steve Fredericks are continuing their efforts
to produce and nationally-syndicate an all-gay program. (Steve
Fredericks is president. of Katahdin, and not an employee
of Three Star Broadcasting or
channel 26 television, as reported
last week. However,
Katahdin handles certain promotional considerations for Three
Star, producer of the All Night
Show on channel 26, and
Katahdin has asked Three Star
for assistance in the proposed
syndicated gay program.)
Currently, Steve Fredericks is
representing the All Night Show
to potential gay advertisers. He
considers
this a first step:
getting gay advertising support
in an existing program. The
next step: moving on to the
syndicated show.

Gunn
The Montrose Star announces an increase
in circulation effective this issue.
The Star now guarantees -a .weekly circulation of 7000 copies, a 40% increase over-the
previous guarantee of 5000 copies.
The Star can .guarantce this increase with
the addition
'of several new distribution
points, including a dozen convenience stores
in the Montrose. -
Ranking
How do the three pub lications stack up in
weekly Houston circulation?
Here are our
estimates:
Montrose Star -1000
This Week- in Texas -less than 5000
Nuntius - about 4000
Generally
speaking,
the Star reaches just-
about everyone in Houston that is reached by
This Week in Texas and the Nuntius, EXCEPT
the Star reaches an additional 20(,)0 to 3000
that neither This Week or the Nuntius reach.
And despite the fact that the Star has
greater circulation in Houston than either of
our two competitors, our advertising rates are
about the same or even less than theirs. For
example, a 35-square-inch
ad in' the Star
costs $35. A 35-square-inch ad in This Week
in Texas costs $60.
The Star gives you greater circulation
where it counts most: Houston. And for less
money.
We call this EFFECTIVE ADVERTISING.
The Montrose Star.
How can you?
How can you have greater Houston circulation but actually have lower .advertising
y'
rates? Aren't you losing money?
No. Because our major competitor has two
significant expenses ,that we don't.. Shipping
expenses to places like Dallas and Odessa.
And a much greater printing bill for about
the same number of copies. Their type of
publication. requires a printing system that
costs about twice the cost 'of printing a
newspaper. And the advertiser of course must
pay for this printing with higher advertising
rates.
"
Plus, Houston advertisers must foot part
of the bill of the out-of-Houston
free distribution of both of our cornpetitors.
And that is why, despite the fact that the
Star has greater Houston circulation than
either This Week .in Texas or the Nuntius, it
has advertising rates that are ab?ut the same
as the Nuntius and rates that are a good bit
lower than This Week in Texas. '
You get EFFECTIVE ADVERTISING
in
the Montrose Star.

Jeannie, I live in a very small

there are hardly any gays here.
As I don't get out much, it

Somewhere out there is "a

Hope you can be of help.
Take care and have a' beautiful day.
