You can see several photos of this activity on page 9 of this edition. Mark you calendars for the Manitowoc car show, Sunday August 12th from 10am – 4pm. Porsche is the 2007 featured vehicle brand. It should be a great time at a low key car show. I hope many you are able to attend. There will be a post show party at the Prellwitz’s, including snacks, beverages, and perhaps a campfire. Read details on page 5 of the newsletter. The Labor Day picnic is still awaiting the Chicago region race schedule. We had requests from last year to have the event on the day that there is track touring during the lunch race break. Details will be in the next newsletter. And on the week-end of September 14th to the 16th, mark your calendars for the 2007 Fall Tour in Michigan and Northern Wisconsin.. Already 9 cars and 17 members have confirmed their participation. This is a good time is time to make your reservations now for a fantastic land and sea fall tour! Read on page 6 for reservations process and details of the itinerary. Please spread the word to your fellow club and zone members and invite them to join us. This will be an ambitious tour, but a great way to wrap up another year of driving our cars! It is hosted by Jim & Laura Prellwitz and Doug & Lori Richter ( Richter's will lead the way and Prellwitz's will bring up the tail). It will be a wonderful fall getaway! We are planning for tech session in October. More details to come soon. Our Holiday Party will be January 12, 2008, at Mackinaws Grill & Spirits in Green Bay. Details to follow. Sincerely, AUGUST 2007 PAGE 4 MONTHLY FROMNOTES—JULY THE EDITOR 2007 July Notes: TROUT SPRINGS WINERY TOUR—( LOOK FOR THE FILMSTRIP VERSON ON PAGE 9) On a sunny Saturday Steve and Andrea De Baker hosted a pot luck lunch at Trout Springs Winery in Greenleaf. While they supplied the meat and wine for lunch, members rounded out the picnic lunch with a nice variety of potato salad, fruit salad, deviled eggs, chips and dip and desert breads. While one half of the group did their wine tasting, Steve led the other half of the group on a tour of the vine yard, hatchery and the upcoming water garden that is currently the front yard. Sharing things they have learned about each area of the winery and hatchery before the groups swapped places from tasting to touring. DID YOU KNOW ? Did you know that swans can live to 60 years old? Did you know that grapes don’t like “wet feet”? Have you ever heard the process for hatching several thousand fingerling fish? Did you know that Trout Springs is built on an Artesian well and supports the eco system of the fish ponds on the property? These were just some of the fun facts we learned on our tour. Congrats to new members, Lori and Bruce Jepson, (who are in their very first year of FVR membership) for winning the July tickets for Road America. And a special thanks to Linda and Bill Bein for their generous donation of those tickets. The club has additional donated tickets to RA races this summer so be sure to attend the August event for your chance to win too! Linda Russo and I (Mary Haen) were the lucky winners of bottles of wine donated by Trout Springs Winery. The raffle brought in $71.00. Be sure to mark your calendars and RSVP for the car show in Manitowoc this August hosted by Laura & Jim Prellwitz. See the newsletter for more details. While the date for the Holiday party has been set, we’re still looking diligently for a volunteer to take over or help with the event. The format does not have to follow past years. Let your imagination run. If you would like to host, please let a board member know of your interest. AUGUST 2007 PAGE 7 MACKINAWS GRILL - DINNER AND SOCIAL On June 12, several FVR members met on an impromptu notice for a great social event and dinner at MACKINAWS Grill and Spirits in Green Bay. Pat Quinn, the restaurant proprietor, is also the proud owner of a vintage Porsche 911 Targa. Pat was delighted to have our FVR club members for dinner at his award-winning restaurant. Great food, good company and lots of fun for all attending. Following dinner, the participant had a private tour of the restaurant. Rick and the owner met and agreed on a room and menu for the January 12 Holiday Party… details to follow. (Photos : Special thanks to Jim Prellwitz) Mackinaws has a most beautiful casual rustic atmosphere with a ton of taxidermy and old world decor. Sunny, warm weather brought a turn out of 18 fellow Porsche enthusiasts together. The restaurant, “Mackinaws”, was recently voted “Best in the Bay” by Green Bay Press Gazette readers. Pat is also our newest member as he joined during our dinner meeting – Welcome Pat! With Bill Hewitt, our tour guide in the lead, we toured Potawatomi and Peninsula State Parks. We stopped for a lunch break at the Mink River Basin Supper Club where an eighth Porsche that was visiting in the area joined us for lunch. After lunch, most of the group continued up the peninsula to visit Whitefish Dunes State Park. While the weather didn’t fully cooperate, we lucked out with a pretty dry day. Other than a few minutes of misty rain, we tra- veled without Targa or Cabbie tops most of the day. Sincerest thanks to Bill Hewitt for organizing this tour. Beginning August 3rd in Moscow, the three Porsche Cayennes will set out on the 3,850-mile route traversing the Ural Mountains, winding through pristine sub-arctic forests up to the rugged peaks of the Altai Mountains, continuing across the sprawling, barren Mongolian plains and through the legendary Gobi Desert, the southernmost point of the rally, prior to reaching the finish line Auggust 17th in Ulaanbaatar, the Mongolian capital. It will be a grueling 15 days, said Peter Schwarzenbauer, president of Porsche Cars North America. I believe that this rally not only demands the most from the driver and co-driver, but from the vehicle as well. It will take power, toughness and absolute dependability to conquer the challenges this rally presents. The three teams, two from the United States and one from Canada, are comprised of some well known names in North American Motorsports. * Team USA 1 Rod Millen and Richard Kelsey Millen has won rally championships on three continents. He has won a class victory at the 24 Hours of Daytona; dominated the Mickey Thompson Off-Road Racing series winning the truck title three years in a row; He is also a multi-time overall winner of the famed Pikes Peak Hill Climb. Kelsey has won both as a driver and co-driver At the Baja 1000, The Pikes Peak Hill Climb and the SCCA National Rally Championship * Team USA 2 Jeff Zwart and Paul Dallenbach Between Jeff Zwart and Paul Dallenbach, the team has accumulated nine overall and class championships at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, the 2nd oldest race in the U.S. In addition Zwart has been U.S. Open Class PRO Rally champion and a class-winner at the infamous Baja 1000. Dallenbachs credentials include being a three-time winner of the Alcan Rally and includes racing in almost every professional road-race series in SCCA and IMSA * Team Canada Kees Nierop and Laurance Yap Nierop has won an overall victory in the legendary 12 Hours of Sebring in addition to numerous other endurance racing wins; Rothmans Porsche Cup champion; Co-drove the Porsche 961 (the racing version of the iconic Porsche 959) for the factory team. Laurance Yap is an award-winning journalist and photographer from Toronto, Canada who writes for such publications as Driven, the Toronto Star and CanadianDriver.Com While the North American teams will compete against entries from Europe, South and Central America and Asia, all of the teams will have to compete again the same unrelenting elements on the plains, mountains and desert of Eurasia. This is an extreme form of competition and with the toll this route could potentially take on the participants, the comfort of the Cayenne will be a tremendous plus as well, said Schwarzenbauer. The Porsche Cars North America entered teams will be competing in all new 2008 Porsche Cayenne S TransSyberias which have been specially built and prepared by Porsche for long-distance rallies and will be making their debut in the TransSyberia Rallye. The modifications are primarily to meet required safety regulations (roll cages and padding; additional seat belts, etc) and to enhance off-road durability (skid plates; auxiliary lighting, etc); the mechanical components of these specially prepared Cayennes remain unchanged including their new 4.8-liter, V8, 385 horsepower direct injection engines. The four Porsche prototypes, entered by Penske Racing and Dyson Racing, now use the same E10 Ethanol fuel mixture as the GT2 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR race cars also entered in the 2-hour and 45-minute contest. The Porsche Cayenne S and Turbo that serve as the official rapid response vehicles of the American Le Mans Series also run on an ethanol-mixed fuel. “We applaud ALMS for their pioneering commitment to raising ecological awareness among automotive enthusiasts,” said Peter Schwarzenbauer, president and CEO of Porsche Cars North America. “This initiative falls in line with the practices we have already established with our standard production models.” Porsche’s complete line of 2008 production cars are all equipped to handle the E10 fuel required by ALMS. The 911, in particular, is a highly fuel-efficient sports car among others in its class, with an extraordinary gas mileage of 26 mpg on the highway and 18 mpg in the city. Additionally, the Cayman and Cayenne S are both certified as ultra-low emissions vehicles. “It is widely reported by the U.S. Department of Energy that the use of ethanol fuel can have huge energy and greenhouse gas emission reduction benefits,” noted Schwarzenbauer. “We are committed to make continuing efforts toward the success of this worthy global cause and encourage our customers to use this fuel when possible. The concerted use of ethanol-mixed fuel in the 911 and other Porsche models is one small, but effective means of protecting the environment.” Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), based in Atlanta, Ga., and its subsidiary, Porsche Cars Canada, Ltd., are the exclusive importers of Porsche sports cars and Cayenne® sport utility vehicles for the United States and Canada. A wholly owned, indirect subsidiary of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, PCNA employs approximately 300 people who provide Porsche vehicles, parts, service, marketing and training for its 213 U.S. and Canadian dealers. They, in turn, provide Porsche owners with best-in-class service. Jill P. There was a total of 44 entries this year and all judges indicated that the quality of the newsletters submitted was impressive across the board. Here are comments from the 5 judges that examined two of our editions (October and December 2007) Judges’ Comments—2007 PCA Newsletter Contest Fox Valley Region (Editor: Denis Grimard) Great event publicity. Love the Whaletales tech forum and new members/ anniversary recognition (cool that car model and year is added) Work on layout of pages – double columns, copy flowing better around photos and a more interesting font for copy would give it more of a newsletter feel. More stories from members Loved 18-year old PCA member’s daughter, Caitlyn Kuck’s article on winning Hot Pit tour at Elkhart Lake! Careful with font mixing Needs a format to follow Needs officer contact info and editorial Easy on the clip art Might be better to put your contact info up front How about thumbnail photos of the officers? Helps newbies Didn’t see an editorial column – would be nice to include a page to do a monthly commentary or whatever. An upbeat, enthusiastic column goes a long way Like your calendar page Good “ads” for future events Oct. looked like a good month for contributors Nice photos, captions Nice variety My Comments: After just a few months of experimenting with formats, graphics, ideas and topics for our Whaletales newsletter, I am very happy and impressed of achieved results at my first PCA National newsletter contest. I will look forward to keep on improving the content and quality of our Whaletales newsletter, requesting your feedback and support from all to provide our readers and members with informative and enjoyable reading material. July was another busy month within the 8 regions located within Zone 13. By the time you read this, the K.I.C. (Kohler International Challenge) will be history. As you may have seen, the Milwaukee Region had been working hard in preparing for festivities within Porsche Park for “Celebrate Porsche”. Not a Zone event but it could be, “Roar at the Shore”, club race and DE was the weekend immediately following the 4th of July, South East Michigan Region (Zone 4) hosted a club race at Gingerman Raceway located in South Haven, Michigan. Based on the large numbers of participants from within our Zone, it could be perceived as a Zone 13 event. Congratulations to Chuck LaMantia, Brian Beierwaltes, Steve Bertheau, Keith Cooper, and Craig Smid for participating as rookies at their first PCA club race. National Notes The second raffle by PCA National was sold out again at 4500 tickets. And the winner is:... drum roll please !!!!! Congratulations to Douris Reed of the Golden Gate Region for winning the 2007 PCA Member Only Raffle Grand Prize- a brand new 911 Carrera! She was surprised by Claude (GGR President) & Cindy Leglise and Vu Nguyen on Saturday, June 30th. Douris currently owns a Cayenne Turbo and is excited about adding the 911 to her stable of cars. We caught the excitement on video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPYPkN_DfR8 Congratulations also go out to Bob Bertbocofpr winning the second prize, a paid trip to the 2008 Porsche Parade in Charlotte, NC. Speaking about Parade, the 2009 Parade to be in Keystone, Colorado the end of June, beginning of July similar to this year. Some 19 Zone 13 parade goers made the trek out to California. Zone 13 and Zone 3 paired up to participate in the Zone Challenge. We constructed the “House of Porsche” out of sand. We were first up in the “tug of war”. After an intense 10 minute battle, our team lost. Disappointing but we didn’t have to participate in two more pulls to win. I could barely feel my fingers after the first try. Congratulations to all that performed well at Parade. Bluegrass Region and webmaster Chris Davis received recognition for 3rd place in the website contest. Congratulations to all the regions that submitted entries within the Newsletter or Website contest. Great job! It’s not the cars, it’s the people. Go out and start enjoying the Porsche Passion!
