Feast of Our Lady
I
n the ancient tradition that the early part of 1400 will be seeking the solemn celebrations of
Our Lady of the Star that from August 29 until September 16 has attracted the attention
of militellesi not.
Attention to make a difference with the one just passed that of the Holy Savior.
The festival part as always crowded with "cantata" who followed all the way marked by the
final bomb that closes the song; shame that this has disappeared in Piazza Sant'Agata and
Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, while it has disfigured the entry of the picture with the
fires tended by the company Fireworks Alessandro Spina.
Parish priests in the early days of September have focused the attention of the liturgical program with the pilgrimage of the relic of St. Hannibal Mary Di Francia
(1851-1927) who in 1907 witnessed the rites of the feast of Our Lady giving him
his watch.
The week before the party, we have seen a successful 26th edition of the film festival "Cinema under the stars" which saw projected on days 1, 2, 3 and 11 September the following films: "Let's go to
hell" of Ficarra and Picone , "Cinderella", "Next to me" and "Fast & furious 7".
Also in these first days of September (exactly 4) there was a beautiful and exciting concert offered by the Corps Band "Antonino Montecassino" conducted by Graziano Lo Presti who presented an opportunity for the new generation of music Militello.
From the morning of the sixth day we will start the tour de force of the festivities in fact before the relic then Eve with a ceremony orchestrated with the usual parade Baroque and the "usual" representation of the principles and then immediately opening the chapel and exposure of the statue to the people Militello.
To pay homage to Our Lady Stella Maris choir, conducted by Alfio Penna, after the first
song was interrupted by the great bell and immediately after the fireworks.
All finished, the people moved in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele to see the concert of the cover
band Modà while advertised Sonohra gave forfeit.
The day of the eighth saw the celebration of the Eucharist at two at 9:30 and 11:00 hours in
the afternoon all looking at the sky as precipitation is expected and so the statue is equipped
with a protective film and ready to come out even if the rain started its course; miraculously
around 17:00 the sky turned blue and so all under baiardo and off for the procession.
The procession after the stop in Piazza Municipio started by Gulinello with the now traditional descent of the angel of President Maria Pollina, but as before the rain resumed incessant
made you decide to pick up the statue to the church to revive the whole day 16.
The rain blew not only around but also the gathering of the Committees Parties and especially the fireworks of the Company La Rosa International Fireworks from Bagheria.
Sport also was featured during the festivities with the Memorial "Pippo Messina" Soccer 5
with the final between "Bar Di Lorenzo" and "The Wolves" with the victory of the first 9 to 4
and a display of volleyball thatIt was held in Piazza S. Maria della Stella by ASD Sporting
Militello.
Another important event was to Monday, September 14 where in Piazza Santa
Maria della Stella was organized a conference on the theme "Educating for legality" based on the figure of blessed Pino Puglisi, who was killed by the Mafia. They
were attended by important figures such as the Bishop of Caltagirone Mons. Calogero Peri, President of the Antimafia Sicily Honourable Nello Musumeci, Doctor
Michelangelo Patanè, Public Prosecutor of the Court of Catania, Doctor Marcello
Ariosto, Deputy Public Safety Commissioner Quaestor Caltagirone, Mirko Viola,
Free association, Michael Artale the Centre Don Pino Palermo.
Evening very participatory and very interesting for the thickness of the interventions but also
in memory of a priest who has spent the legality.

The last two days have been memorable, starting with the Tuesday 15 XVIII Review Poly
"Militello Chori Cantates" and award of the "Orpheus" to Master Marcello Giordani. Around
midnight the statue is left to bear the ancient site of Our Lady of Vetere. A long procession
that on arrival at the destination of the Virgin was moved to the beautiful atmosphere that has
been created. The Madonna was guarded all night and then at 19.00 has resumed the interrupted journey 8th.
A party in growing with some usual deburring, accustomed, but ended in the best possible
way.

aria Pollina (pictured) Chairman of the celebrations of Our Lady of the Star. Tell us about the experience lived.
Was a great thrill to chair this festival, as a child that I carry in my heart. When I proposed for this
office I am now well accepted and tried right now to do everything possible to make it unforgettable. So I made one of my dreams.
It will make history this year in your opinion?
Certainly, the vigil in the church of Santa Maria la Vetere, as well as the investment and also with
the presence of many foreigners, has allowed us to admire the beautiful statue on the porch of the
old church; personally being behind the statue upon arrival in the square in front of surprised me given the time (it was 1:15) all those people.
What do not you like about this party?
I did not like the day of the party but the rain could not risk damaging the statue. It seemed logical return the
Madonna in the Sanctuary and postpone everything.
Even with the rain the way Gulinello and the descent of the angel who for years has characterized the first part of the
tour could not miss?
The Lady waiting for this moment and on arrival the rain magically stopped then the singing of the Ave Maria
made it magical.
A well-structured party where he saw the active participation of Alfio Penna, wants to give us a thing?
I was one of the first to know the problems of Alfio started the day of centenarians (July 21), what a wonderful
person, very helpful and great attention to detail. Every day we felt to exchange opinions and ideas. I really
miss, I can not believe she disappeared because for me it was a brother. A person who will not only Marian
Community but to the entire city.
We close with thanks for the party?
First of priests who supported me and helped me in the choices; Municipal Administration active initiatives and

The birth of the three keys
A

from my governor, who riscontrommi have made them my orders, I respond as estimated for
the present in the same capacity of the disengagement of which I do not meant to show me a
carelessness I would all regret.

RECALLING THE PAST FESTIVAL
I
mportant milestone for the event for years is the event most anticipated of the year and
later. In these 25 years we have things to talk about and especially people who have
made the success of this event. Not everyone knows that the first edition started in 1987
exactly on 24 and 25 October and was organized by the City, the Province of Catania,
by the Provincial Tourism, by the Local Cooperative and Sun City with the help of
Antonino Cantarella that began in exhibitions many tools and objects of civilization,
centuries before the birth of the ethno-anthropological museums.
The festival continues in 1988 and then stop waiting for new ideas and leaders. In 1993, thanks to the Municipal Administration, led by Salvatore Troja, from the Province of Catania, led by Mr Nello Musumeci, and
the Pro Loco, headed by Paolo Russitto, attempts were made to revive this tradition by placing it permanently in the 2nd week October.
From this edition apart from the winning format that continues today that on Friday
and opening musical performance, the musical attraction on Saturday and Sunday
day folk with a parade of carts.
The edition of 1994 is instead the gathering of campers and party for a few editions were organized conferences on Ficodindia organized under the direction of
responsible ESA Sopat Filippo Ruscica.

numerous Cover Band, except those in which the various organizers have decided to aim for the success of the

For many, the festival highlight was the 2000 where in addition to the good weather we had so many visitors
while the most expensive was the 2002 edition with a performance by
Gigi D'Alessio has increased exponentially costs.

He left the last of the great
H
e died on 7 September, at the age of 90 years, Paolo Eremita Ruscica, for all the "uncle Paolino". A fervent Catholic and human traits and kind, belonged to a me perhaps more roman c than the current, where human rela onships and social rela ons were in first place; a me when the problems of the community and care for the weakest and the last had priority over personal interests and par san.
And in this spirit, Don Paolino, had formed, and from an early age he joined the Catholic school of thought that had
found its highest expression in the Chris an Democrats, was born according to the teachings and the dictates of Don
Luigi Sturzo, his friend and mentor.
Here he developed his passion for poli cs, his deep humanity and a%en on to social issues and the needs and moods
of the people, much to spend much of his me in the salon shaving allocated to it and that she saw him always serving
the needs and the needs of all, always ready to spend themselves in the service of the community, always ready and
willing to meet the demands of all un l recently before his big heart stopped.
His poli cal ac vity had led to a commitment intended as a service and not as a command, enough to cover for about
30 years as Party Secretary-crusader shield. This allowed him to hold various posi ons in the en ty public during most
legislatures, as to be called to cover, in 1990, the highest office of the mayor, honor and responsibility entrusted to

In the liturgy and ecclesias cal remember his commitment in the bodies of the Mother Church parish St. Nicholas-the
Holy Savior, where he held various posi ons of responsibility;We remember him mainly for his commitment uninterrupted for 41 years as Governor of the Arch of the Blessed Sacrament of which had
treated various aspects related to the decorum of the cemetery chapel, economic
management and secretarial and in the care of the rela ons between the Church and
the City. Regular subscriber and reader of the newspaper "La Sicilia" for more than 50
years, he had done reading the newspaper in his living room shaving, a ritual to share
with friends and acquaintances; we want to remember him for his deep sense of duty,
for his helpfulness and friendliness towards all; all turned to him and to everyone he
had a word of comfort and hope.
He wanted to celebrate his 65th wedding anniversary surrounded by the love of children and grandchildren and, during this event had wanted marital renewed promises, ensuring every mutual cooperaon and dedica on for the challenges ahead.
He's gone so the last of the great, on a rainy and dreary a2ernoon of September; maybe heaven wanted to greet him
so, with her tears, perhaps moved by his famous and passionate public speeches and his noble soul, perhaps mindful
of the last kiss that he wanted to give the white flag shield-day crusade in the historic breakup of his beloved party,
that same flag that had covered the coffin on his farewell.
Goodbye and thank you for everything, uncle Paolino.
REMEMBERING MR. GIOVANNI BURTONE
P
aolo Eremita was for me, for his great friendship with my father, one of the historical figures of reference in
my poli cal commitment. As secretary of the Chamber, as an administrator, as a ci zen has always declined
in the most sober and mild his poli cal passion. Civic a%en on to its unique community, a capacity to mediate, to synthesize, to overcome divisions while being
firm in his convic ons.
He went through the changes without them ever would change.
He did it without regret and without nostalgia if not for the costumes and behaviors among men who have changed. He faced important choices that had to do
with the development of Militello constant a%en on to the weakest, I think, for
example the orphanage.
It would be many things and anecdotes that I could men on but I am assailed by
a great void. And I remember the words of the song by Ligabue (One Life to median), "with specific tasks, to cover certain areas, to play generous, there always there, in the middle".
It was him. We will miss him, we have lost a friend, a very good person. A warm hug to the family.

SoduringthecelebrationsofOurLadyStarcreatesagatheringofchoirsSicilianstopayhomage to our patron saint who takes the title "Militello Chori Cantates" and simultaneously
establishedtheprize"Orpheus".
AfterafewyearshehasmanagedtomakethiseventsoastoreceivetheNationalMedalofrepresentingthePresidencyoftheItalianRepublic.
LastSaturdaywaselectedbyacclamationasthenewPresidentSalvatoreScirèRisichella,to
whomgoourGoodlucktothelegacythatisgoingtosupport.Scirèbeganwiththesewords:
"Al io lives and will always live within the Association"; It continued in the memory of Al io in

ariagrazia Cusumano born in Militello in Val di Catania in 1947.
Since the school is passionate about poetry
and began writing in a diary his emotions,

Militello . . . to throw back

aroque ... starting point.
When this city was included in the World Heritage List (UNESCO) thought
that, from this point of departure, would take place the revival of quality places
in all those aspects that it contains.
And we were at the same time happy to savor and greet this event as an eventthat would restore our light and color, so loved, a city that for decades languished, dying a slow death at the hands of the disorganized planning technicaladministrative-free forward thinking and has only turned into reality by the peculiarities in that virtue, call nepotism that escapes the city and promotes their
own backyard where the fall in that poetic justice, much feared by free spirits
deployed to defend the Militello.
Making, so, in that what would make pitied the urban and extra through the revaluation of monuments and artistic offered to UNESCO.
After a few decades there are no signs of improvement in these areas whose immediate impact from the tangible idea that something you want to do to reverse
