Personal: Jeff Bambule has lived through both the good
and bad days of the school’s history. He was a cast member
on Romeoville’s 1985-86 outfit which upset St. Joseph’sWestchester in the first round of the Elite Eight, only to have
to forfeit 27 wins in 33 starts due to having an ineligible player.
Soon thereafter, he guided the Spartans’ frosh-soph squad
for three years and served as an assistant varsity coach
for five more. Those years of service made Bambule the
perfect choice for the varsity head coaching position when
the vacancy popped up eight years ago. He has proven the
pick correct, too, having gone 125-135 since that time for
a program that had won just 17 games against 111 losses
from 1993-99.

Notes
For the first time in their 32-year history of the tournament,
the Romeoville Spartans find themselves on the small school
side of the LCC bracket. It might not have come at a better
time in the fact that head coach Jeff Bambule brings one of his
youngest clubs to the tournament. Only three of the 13 rostered players are seniors on Bambule’s club and the only two
returning starters are still underclassmen in Donte Fuller and
Bo Goshorn with the latter just a sophomore. Both will have
to play at the top of their games to make up for the graduated
Demarius Miller, who averaged 23.3 points and 5.8 rebounds
on his way to first team all-tournament honors last year.

Personal: Bill Koehne initially broke the ice on the Broncos’
11-year dryspell in postseason play back in 2000 and now
returns to carry on the tradition left by his younger brother,
Robert, who closed out his coaching run last year with the
third of three straight regional titles. After a four-year hiatus,
Bill Koehne is back to man the head post, where he hopes
to continue where he left off, following up the 2000 regional
crown with an undefeated Private School League campaign
the next year, a second-place finish in 2001-02 and another
regional finals appearance in 2002-03. Koehne went 154137 in 11 years the first time around at his alma mater,
where he lettered twice in track and cross country and once
in basketball.
Notes
A longstanding member of the Private School League - which
dissolved after last season - Walther Lutheran is playing as
an independent in 2009-2010 before moving on to the newlyformed Suburban Christian Conference next winter. There, the
Broncos will fill the void left by the closing of Driscoll Catholic
High School after last year. In the interim, Walther’s schedule
has run the gamut from small school to large, including the
likes of Chicago-Robeson, making them a strong candidate
to come out on top of the very-even small school division of
the LCC. The strong independent schedule should also help
the Broncos challenge for their fourth straight regional crown
in March.

SENTINELS
Craig Etheridge
Birthplace: Shreveport, Louisiana
Wife: Jennifer
Children: Isabelle
High School: Glenbard East
College: Northern Illinois
University
Personal: Craig Etheridge’s 10 seasons at the helm of the
Sentinel program have been nothing short of strong, netting
him a 177-118 mark, back-to-back 28-win campaigns and a
pair of LCC title game appearances. The first such showing
in 1999 produced Westmont’s first-ever tourney title and catapulted the Sentinels to the Class A supersectionals. There,
Bishop McNamara ended Westmont’s 28-game winning
streak and season at 28-2. One year later, the Sentinels
weren’t to be denied, claiming a fourth-place state finish. A
winner of six regional crowns, three league titles and two
sectional championships as a coach, Etheridge has also
been part of a regional title team as a player for Glenbard
East in 1988.

Notes
The Sentinels may have lost 2009 Suburban Life Player of
the Year, IBCA first team all-state selection and LCC MVP
Tyler Pierce (24.3 ppg/10.0 rpg) to graduation, but head
coach Craig Etheridge’s club is still determined to extend its
string of 20-win seasons to three and its run of regional titles
to four. It may come down to the wire, though, just like the
season has gone, thus far. Through the first eight games, the
No. 4-seeded Sentinels have had six contests settled in the
last quarter with each of those affairs having been decided
by six points or less. Much of the same will be expected in a
wide-open Interstate 8.

ARGONAUTS
Pat Maietta
Birthplace: Berwyn, Illinois
Wife: Colleen
Children: Maggie, Grace
& Maeve
High School: Fenwick
College: Bradley University
Personal: Argo’s basketball heyday came in the late 1980’s
when the Argonauts claimed three straight regional titles
from 1986-88. Since that time, the Summit-based school
has known only one other regional crown, that coming in
2001. Pat Maietta, who made his debut as a head coach at
the varsity level four years ago when he took over the helm
at Argo, has begun to turn back the clock to those glory days
of old and right the Argonaut ship after posting the program’s
first double-digit win total since 2003 last year. A history
instructor at Argo, Maietta earned his undergraduate degree
at Bradley University. He first learned the basketball trade
at Fenwick High School, where he was a four-year member
of the Friars’ hoops program.

Notes
While Richards H.S. may still be the premier team in the
South Suburban Red Conference, don’t be surprised if Argo
sneaks up on the Bulldogs and bites them right back this
winter. Fourth-year head coach Pat Maietta’s club continues to rise with each passing season, parallel to the rise of
Marquis Dotson and Morris Woods, both of whom started as
underclassmen. In fact, the playmaker Dotson is back for his
fourth year in the starting fold, while Woods, last year’s leading
scorer (15.5 ppg) and rebounder (6.2 rpg), is back for season
number three. And don’t forget about Godfrey Brown. All he
did last year as a first-time starter was average 12.4 points
and 4.6 rebounds per game.

Todd Allen
Birthplace: Chicago, Illinois
Wife: Janet
Children: None
High School: Carl Sandburg
College: University of Wisconsin
Parkside
Personal: Todd Allen may have been gone for four- and twoyear stretches, but the Carl Sandburg basketball program
keeps calling him back and he has been more than happy to
oblige. A three-time all-conference and two-year all-area selection with the Eagles initially, Allen left the first time to attend
University of Wisconsin-Parkside, where he was a four-year
letterwinner for the Rangers. Allen returned in 1996 to guide
Sandburg’s program at the sophomore level and produced
a 130-38 mark in seven seasons before stepping down after
the 2002-03 campaign. Two years later, after a stint as the
girls’ varsity golf coach, Allen came back in 2005, this time to
guide the fortunes of the Eagles’ top-level program.

Notes
Carl Sandburg is in a class by itself in that the Eagles are
the lone team in this year’s LCC field not to have a returning
starter back in the fold. The Eagles, however, did not feel
sorry for themselves when the season opened. They were
too busy winning games, as in the first five contests of the
year. That start has warranted Sandburg the No. 3 seed in
the large school division after earning the No. 1 spot in 2008.
Plainfield Central derailed the Eagles in the second round
last year, irritating Sandburg so that its next two opponents
did not have a chance in no less than 23-point blowouts.
The Eagles would like nothing more than a rematchup with
Plainfield on Monday.

Personal: Born on the West Coast, Jim Thomas brought his
hoops game to the Midwest and excelled both in high school
at Wheaton North and in college at Augustana. An all-state
special mention pick his senior year at Wheaton North,
the same year he was named all-conference and all-area,
Thomas went on to earn defensive player of the year honors
three times at Augustana before closing out his playing career
earning third team all-conference accolades. Thomas’ first
venture into the head coaching ranks came at the sophomore
level at his alma mater Wheaton North before taking over the
Trojan program two years ago. With the latter, Thomas has
turned in a record of 21-31.
After a long absence from the tournament, Downers Grove
North makes its return in 2009 and what the Trojans will find
is a very competitive large school field. That, however, won’t
be any different from playing in the solid West Suburban Silver
Conference. For DGN to hold its own both during the tournament and in the conference race, the Trojans will have to get
help from a junior-laden roster. In all, 12 of the 17 players
dotting the squad are juniors. That, however, did not stand
in the way of the Trojans testing league favorite Oak ParkRiver Forest two weeks ago in a 49-40 setback. The return
of Eric Jagielo (a Notre Dame baseball signee) after a year
away is a bonus.

Personal: After an illustrious playing career at both Driscoll
Catholic H.S. and Elmhurst College, Vince Doran is now extending that into the coaching ranks, where he served at the
helm of his high school program for three years prior to taking
over at Hinsdale South nine years ago. A 1988 graduate of
Driscoll, Doran left the program as its all-time leading scorer
producing better than 1,000 points. An outstanding four-year
run followed at Elmhurst, where the three-time captain guided
the Bluejays to the NCAA III tournament (2nd round) in 1992.
He finished holding career records for games played and assists and tallied another 1,000 points there. That led to a spot
in the school’s hall of fame, gaining induction in 1997.
Notes
Can the Hornets make a run at their second LCC title in three
years? Coach Vince Doran would like to think so with four
returning starters back, including 2008 second team all-LCC
pick Lavonte Brown. Brown, an all-area and all-league choice,
as well, last year, posted tournament numbers of 15.5 ppg and
8.3 rpg with a .522 shooting mark. The Hornets also have
three-year regular and all-area honorable mention choice
Karl Ploger back. Nonetheless, the success of this year’s
Classic for the No. 4 large school seed could come down to
6-6 sophomore Brock Benson, who is in his first full season
as a starter.

Notes
After claiming just four victories in his first season as Leyden’s
head coach two years ago, Bill Heisler guided the team to
a 12-14 mark last winter. Now, Heisler and the Eagles are
looking to push the limit even further with returning starters
Mike Woolf and Javi Lazcano serving as the guides. Woolf
led the Eagles from long range last year, connecting on 46.8
percent of his three-point attempts, a nearly 10 percent better
clip than his overall shooting mark from the field. Woolf was
also one of three Eagles to average double-figures in scoring
(11.4 ppg), the other two - Alex Regalado (18.1) and Anthony
Cushion (10.8) - having moved on. Lazcano was next in line
at 5.4 ppg.

Personal: After serving as an assistant coach for much of
the past decade first at St. Charles North High School (three
years) and then the past five years at Plainfield Central,
Steve Lamberti got the call earlier this year notifying him
that the Wildcat basketball program was now his to direct.
A varsity assistant in the program each of the past three
years, Lamberti takes over for Josh Virostko, whose teaching position was cut at the end of last year. Lamberti knows
a little bit about the game having excelled at both the high
school and collegiate ranks. At Streamwood High School,
Lamberti scored over 1,000 points and grabbed better than
500 rebounds in a three-year varsity career that saw him earn
all-conference honors twice.
Notes
Plainfield Central did it once before - winning the LCC on backto-back occasions in 2003 and 2004 - and now the Wildcats
have positioned themselves to do it again. Three starters are
back from last year’s 16-10 club, but two of them saw either
limited (Justin Scanlan) or no time (Winston Williams, injury)
during the perfect 4-0 run. That makes this Wildcat bunch
hungry to go through the experience all over again. With another strong large school field on tap, the No. 2 seed will no
doubt have to win the tight games just like it did one year ago
when it claimed all four contests by seven points or less.
