W e’ve often heard people say
“Time flies when you’re having fun”.
But I think we could also say,
“Time flies when you’re busy”! And
sometimes we can probably say
“Time flies when you’re having fun
being busy”!
It seems to be the last
description could be said about
many on the Vacation Dinner
committee. Mimi Lodoen seems to
have enjoyed coordinating the
planning of that event, Jana Ellis
always seemed excited about the
decorating plans, Maureen Boa was
passionate about the wine and poker
chip raffle, Joanne Kachur designed
an eye-catching brochure, and on it
goes... As you read this article,
another successful Vacation Dinner
has come and gone. Thank you to
Mimi Lodoen and her hard-working
team for providing an elegant
atmosphere and entertaining
evening for the “Divas of Las
Vegas”. It seemed to be that we had
the right people in the right jobs,
and that’s what makes being busy
fun!

I’m sure the summer flew by as
you were having fun! As usual the
summers seem too short – and this
past summer didn’t have enough
warm sunny days to suit me! But I
managed to have my share of fun,
visiting friends and family, having
the grandchildren at the cabin,
camping near Radium Hot Springs,
golfing – and even walking a
marathon! It is always interesting
to hear about all the things we do in
the summer, and the variety of
things that bring us enjoyment.
Again, it was a busy summer, but it
was also fun.
Many of us are back at work
after taking holidays, and are
probably finding that time is flying
by as we try to catch up on all the
work that piled up while we were
gone. We are also busy getting into
all of the programs and committees
that take up our extracurricular
time, and sometimes we can get too
busy and it’s no longer fun. When
that happens, time is not only
flying, but we feel as if we’re not
keeping up with time and we’re just
flying in
circles.
There’s
nothing
wrong with
time flying
by as you’re
having fun,
or even when you’re busy if you’re
enjoying what you’re doing. But
when it’s no longer enjoyable, and
you feel as if you’re flying in circles,
then it’s time to take a break, and
make time stand still while you
glide for a while and catch your
breath Think of the lyrics of this
song to help us keep life in
balance:.” Time Flies so fast - Seize
the moment, make it last. Time
Flies away - So let's do what we can
today.”

Table Talk
Thanksgiving is almost here. Can you identify what you’re most thankful for in
a) your personal life
b) your family life
c) your professional life?
DENINE HANSEN
Radisson Hotel
In my personal life I am most
thankful for my wonderful family, my
friends, my health, and my passion for
food (ie. Icecream - Can't get enough
of those awesome SKOR blizzards
these days!...) In my family life I am
most thankful for my loving husband,
my amazingly beautiful and bright
little girl, my smooth and relatively
painless pregnancy thus far, and for
love that seems so easy to give away
with such wonderful people. In my
professional life, I am most thankful
for a great crew of people to work
with, both in our office (Radisson
Hotel), and in the relationships that
are established with great clients who
really make coming to 'work' a lot of
fun. I really have a lot to be thankful
for, I feel very blessed.
NAOMI KREUTZWIESER
Kidney Foundation
My personal life - I am most
thankful for my health - something
that should never be taken for
granted. Working in an industry
where I see everyday how disease
affects individuals and families, I am
reminded how very fortunate I am.
My family - The two loves of my
life - my always thoughtful, loving
husband (and an amazing father to our
son) and my adorable son (who has
taught me that miracles do come in
small packages!)
My work - My job gives me the
opportunity to make a difference in
people's lives. I am very proud of
what I do - I raise funds so that others
can have a better quality of life.
DONNA THRASHER
Usana
In my personal life I am most
thankful for good health and in light
of the Katrina disaster a safe and dry
place to live. In my family life I am
most thankful for a wonderful life
partner, two loving sons and two
delightful grandchildren and to still
have my Mom and Dad, ages 87 and
89. In my professional life I am most
thankful for the freedom of being my
own boss working from home and a
product and opportunity that has a
powerful impact on peoples lives.
Happy Thanksgiving!
GAIL MORGAN
Brian Mallard & Associates
Everyday I am thankful for being so
blessed in my life but at Thanksgiving
we tend to be more vocal about it.
First and foremost, I am thankful that
I have my health. I am thankful that I
have a wonderful husband of 40 years
who shares my goals and interests in
life. I have 4 beautiful grandchildren
who I hardly get to see but get to
spend time with in the summertime
where we can create memories for
myself as well as their cousins. The
gift of friendships is another blessing I
cannot overlook. I am so thankful to
be working for a employer I consider
my friend who
treats me with
respect and
understanding.
One cannot
overlook the fact
that we live in a
part of the world
that doesn’t suffer
through the disasters we have seen
recently. All in all, life is good!
JOANNE FENRICH
Lady J Creative Design Inc.
As Thanksgiving approaches it is
always a great time to sit back and
reflect on how everything has gone
through the year and what we are
most thankful for. As I watch the
autumn colors come to our part of the
city I am personally thankful that I am
surrounded by a loving family and
friends. After the disastrous year that
so many people have experienced
around the world I am grateful that we
have remained safe and healthy. We
must never take for granted all that
God has provided in our lives. My
business has experienced some
growing pains this past year and at
times I have thought that getting a
"real job" would be easier. But it
would never afford me the
opportunities that I have had this year
to meet so many terrific people. My
students have been an uplifiting and
eager group. It has been a wonderful
experience for me to see them grow in
their skills and see them overcome
their fears. I am very thankful that I
had such a patient teacher in my
Mother so that now I am able to pass
along what I have learned to others.

What is the value of donating a prize to the many SWN functions
and how does it impact my business or service?
It seems that as members of the SWN,
we are always being asked to donate a
prize for the many events that the SWN
has. There is the lunch and breakfast
meetings, the vacation dinner, the
Christmas gift bags, the Christmas party,
the curling funspiel, the golf
tournament and other special events.
Some members have asked “what is the
value to my business if I donate?”
The benefit of donating a gift at the
lunch and breakfast meetings is so that
you can hand out flyers, etc. to the
members at that particular meeting.
The SWN asks that the gift has a
minimum retail value of $25.00 at these
events, so you as a member can
advertise an event, a sale or a
fundraising event to a number of
members for very little cost.
As was mentioned in the last newsletter,
the value of donating a prize to the
vacation dinner is immense. For
donating a prize with a minimum retail
$50.00 value, your name and business is
listed in the program that each attendee
(usually over 550 attendees) can take
home as a keepsake and, in most cases,
the individual will review all the prizes
that were donated. The recipient will
remember your business every time they
use the prize that they won. The donors
are also listed in the Star Phoenix after
the event for even more exposure. We
cannot think of anywhere else that you
get that much exposure and advertising
for a minimum $50.00 value.
The Christmas gift bags, the Christmas
party, the curling and golf, and other
special events do not have a minimum
4
value for a prize. Therefore, you can
donate a small useful prize that a
member or guest can enjoy and
remember the event and your donation.
For example, last year Karen Luiten
donated small magnetic calendars, so for
a full year, we have seen Karen’s smiling
face every time we open the fridge or
need to check the date.
The purpose of the Saskatoon Women’s
Network is to network and get your
business recognized. What better way
to remember another member’s name
than to win a prize that they have
donated. A great example is the
breakfast and lunch prize donations
from Glenda Potter of Figures. If you
have been to the breakfast and lunch
meetings in the past year, you have seen
prizes donated by Glenda many times.
The exposure her business has received
has been immeasurable. She doesn’t
have a product to give because her
business is a fitness centre, she has a
service to promote, but she donates
beautiful gift baskets that catches
everyone’s attention.
So next time you are approached to
donate a prize for one of the SWN
functions, don’t think of it as an extra
cost of being a member of the SWN.
Think of it as an inexpensive
advertising opportunity to promote your
business or service. All donators are
always recognized in one way or
another. You may not always receive a
thank you from the prize winner but
remember the prize donations are an
advertising tool more than a gift to the
recipient.

B
uilding relationships is a major
focus in the life of our new
Membership Chair, Brenda Strelioff.
Professionally, Brenda started off
in restaurant management, but after
an accident that kept her on
disability for a year, she sought a
new direction working as a temp
with Kelly Services. Her very first
placement started a new career
relationship for Brenda in the world
of financial services. Now, fourteen
years later, she has advanced to
become a financial services advisor
with Assante Financial
Management, complete with her
Certified Financial Planner (CFP)
designation. Now, she works to
build long-term relationships with
her clients by using a wholistic
approach to their finances. She
looks at all aspects of their finances
from day to day banking and
investments, to tax planning,
personal insurance and estate
planning. Recently, along with her
partner, Brenda has branched out
into developing corporate
relationships through the
development and presentation of
seminars to the employees of their
corporate clients as part of their HR
package.
and continue
to build a
new strong
relationship
with each
other. To
add to this, Brenda herself has
sought out her own birth family
over the past few years and has been
reunited with them also.
Over the past five years, Brenda
has also been building wonderful,
somewhat new, relationships in her
personal life as well. Years ago,
faced with a teenage pregnancy,
Brenda made the extremely difficult
decision to give her baby daughter
up for private adoption. As an
adopted child herself, Brenda was
confident that adoption would give
her daughter more opportunities
than she herself was able to offer at
that time. Four years ago, when her
daughter turned 18, she sought
Brenda out. Since then, they have,
Other important relationships in
Brenda’s life include Bob, her
husband of 12 years (together for
20), their long-term homerenovation project, gourmet
cooking, the piano, and a fairly
recent passionate relationship with
the game of golf.
When asked how she feels about
her involvement in the SWN, guess
what Brenda loves the most? No
surprise really … it’s the
relationships she has built with
fellow members!

September Luncheon Speakers
By Laura Dutka, Paramount Day Spa Salon & Boutique
MAUREEN BOA
My Travel Sinfonia
My Travel Sinfonia has been in
business in YXE (that’s travel talk for
Saskatoon) for 50 years with long-term
experienced staff that can provide
complete travel advice.
Working with a qualified travel
consultant offers many advantages.
They have no bias towards any particular
airline or tour company. They will
check all options available and present you with a variety of
options that best suit your needs. Maureen expressed the
importance of looking for a consultant that you feel
comfortable dealing with. The best way to do that is by
asking friends and family for a referral to someone they
enjoyed good service from.
A good consultant will take the time to get to know
your needs and preferences. They will consider the style of
vacation you are looking for and advise you of any legal or
medical requirements you may need to consider. They
should also offer ideas and tips about the particular area you
are visiting and what to see and do. Maureen’s travel team
also specializes in group travel, especially weddings.
Watch for their on-going travel information seminars.
SONIA KUCEY
Camaryl Enterprises INA Associate
Sonia approaches life with the
philosophy of “You can have everything
in life you want, if you will just help
enough other people get what they
want first”. Born with a life-threatening
heart condition and not expected to
even live, Sonia learned early on to
make every moment count. She
believes that LIFE is ATTITUDE.
Five years ago, Sonia joined the referral marketing
business by becoming involved with the I.N.A. association
and it’s team of leaders. Her strong spiritual faith kept her
going as she found herself in a huge learning curve, but
ultimately a successful one none-the-less.
INA offers member benefits through independent
business ownership. You shop for your personal needs from
the comfort of your own home, with a 100% money back
guarantee. If you like the products and enjoy the shopping
experience, you tell your friends about it, and they will do
likewise. Your business operates from a website, so it’s very
simple, no inventory, deliveries or accounts receivable to
worry about.
Sonia believes that the opportunity she offers with INA
has very simple requirements. Have a DREAM, have a
teachable ATTITUDE, and an unconditional loving and
caring HEART. You get to be in business for yourself, with
the freedom to do what you want, when you want, and with
whom you want, while still working within a team.

August 23rd Breakfast
By Linda Epstein, U of S Division of Media and Technology
Outside, it was a gray and rainy
morning, but the friendly banter and
good food inside the Willows created
a sunny atmosphere. It was the
SWN’s August breakfast.
After the usual spate of
announcements…62 golfers attended
the Golf Tournament, ads are
encouraged for the newsletter,
reminders to go to the website to
check your profile, and the Vacation
Dinner is coming up (get your tickets
soon), the networking exercise for
the morning was introduced with a
quote: “Life is not measured by the
breaths we take, but by the moments
that take our breath away.” We were
to discuss those moments that have
taken our breath away…Judging from
the buzz in the room, there were
many of those moments.
At our table, there were, of
course, references to babies and
grandbabies, and amazing travel
experiences. The Northern Lights,
the amazing variety of golf courses in
Saskatchewan, and the wonderful
“job” of working on a cruise ship and
suddenly realizing how lucky you are,
all came up. But the prize must go to
Sonia Kucey who has had her
medical issues over the years and
truly feels that every day takes her
breath away. “I thank God for life, I
treasure it,” she says.
What a great attitude…and what
a great way to start the day!
September 27th Breakfast
By Liz Chabassol, Saskatoon Health Region
On Tuesday, September 27th
2005, a large number of members
enjoyed fruit, pancakes & sausages,
as well as spirited conversation at
The Willows. We then enjoyed two
interesting speakers:
Carole Collins is a multitalented
member with experience in massage,
laughter & aroma therapy, who
recently ran the "Lunch &
Learn"workshop on laughter. She
gave us an intriguing talk about the
benefits of laughter on the whole
body. These include relief of negative
stress [whose symptoms can be high
blood pressure, headaches, depression
& insomnia], muscle relaxation, as
8
well as increased oxygen supply &
endorphins. World Laughter Day is
celebrated the first Sunday of May.
Laughter in the workplace can
reduce absenteeism & stress &
increase productivity. Plan a daily
laughter break!
Nicola Lawson, the executive
chef & owner of PickNic's
Restaurant downtown on 22nd
Street has so far led an interesting
life. Born in England, she has lived
in Northern Ontario, Alberta &
Beaver Creek in the North. She has
travelled extensively through Africa,
& has worked as a pastry chef in
both Cape Town & Bermuda. She
relocated to Saskatoon to be closer
to family, & opened her own business
downtown. She can supply catering
for 4 to 2000 people. Her restaurant
is even available for up to 70 people
for private functions in the evenings.
The menu has an international &
varied flavour & there are daily
lunch specials available at a
reasonable price.
There were several new members
introduced & a large number of door
prizes given away, to get us in the
mood for the Vacation Dinner to be
held the next day.
Random Profile
Karen Cranston -
agriculture grad, financial assistant, national cycling
official, traveler, supportive friend, loving aunt, and proud
founding member of the Saskatoon Women’s Network.
By Linda Epstein
B
orn in Saskatoon, Karen and
her family moved to a farm near
Vanscoy when she was 13. Although
she hadn’t particularly thought
about going to University, she did
return to Saskatoon, to the U of S
College of Agriculture. “I just
went…my friends were going. So
did I.”
After University, she worked in
laboratories for nine years before
walking away. “I left it totally,” she
states. Following stints in chemistry
sales, card sales, and even at the zoo,
Karen entered the world of financial
planning and investment. She has
been a financial assistant since
1994, and is currently with CIBC
Wood Gundy.
It may seem a big shift – from
lab technician to financial assistant
– but Karen insists that both require
the same skills. “Both require you to
be detailed, organized, and a
problem solver.”
At 27 Karen married Scott, a
brakeman at CP Rail, and an avid
cyclist. The couple divorced 9 _
years later but not before Karen,
too, had fallen in love with the
sport of cycling. She began to
officiate at events and, for five years,
she organized the biggest race in
Saskatchewan. She has become a
commissaire (judge) at the national
level for road cycling, and will soon
also be accredited as a national
mountain bike official.
Growing up, Karen was taught
that if she was going to do
something, she should do it well. It
raised her expectations of herself
and others. But it also made her
seek out the genuine. “Nobody has
to pretend around me,” she says,
“and I personally just put it out
there – this is me.” She is able to see
through to the good in people, and,
when she connects with those
special people whom she calls
“friend” she nurtures those
relationships through the ebbs and
flow of her life.
Karen is truly proud of her longtime connection with SWN. “Its
philosophy [women helping women]
is my philosophy. I would be a
different person if I hadn’t joined
SWN…and I believe that SWN is
fundamentally different because I
was there early, willing to work
hard, and willing to learn new
things. It was all new back then.”
Karen was president in the 1985/86
term. “There were lots of major
changes during that time. We
started in each others’ homes with
fewer than 12 of us.”
“Saskatoon Women’s Network
(provides an opportunity for)
camaraderie that will lead to actual
business,” she says, “but it also leads
to a sense of sisterhood. It is
important for women to know that
women out there are doing and
feeling the same kinds of things.”

August Lunch
by Karen Millard, Write-up Communications
Those who attended the August 9th
luncheon were asked to fill out a questionnaire prepared by the Program Committee,
which hopes to learn more about why
members do, or do not, donate prizes to the
SWN’s various events. The six questions
posed (see sidebar) provoked some spirited
discussion around the tables, as everyone
explored their motivations for donating prizes,
or their reasons for not doing so; explained
which events they were most likely to contribute to, and why; and considered whether
or not they felt their generosity was
appreciated.
Filling out the questionnaire also proved
to be an effective networking exercise. Members were prompted to offer their opinions on
the most enjoyable events, and to share a
little of their own history in the SWN.
The Program Committee will be reviewing
the responses at its next meeting and plans to

Joanne Johnston -
Pacific and Western Bank of Canada, Weekenders Ladies Wear
By Shawna Ens, Paramount Day Spa Salon & Boutique
Joanne Johnston returned to the
SWN in 2004. She first joined the
organization in 1995.
Joanne’s home at heart is right
here in Saskatoon, where she grew
up. In her early high school years she
discovered a lot about who she is and
what she could be. Her methodical
nature, organizational skills and
attention to detail resulted in straight
As. She was not only interested in
results and conclusions, but also
thrived on the technicalities of a
problem. It is these qualities she feels
led to her interest in accounting.
Joanne’s first accounting job was
with Deloitte and Touche, where she
worked as the audit senior. After five
years, she decided to make a change
and moved to Quality Cutting and
Tools where she worked as the
Controller. Five years later, wanting
to broaden her horizons and expand
her responsibilities, Joanne joined
Pacific and Western Bank of Canada.
Her duties went beyond crunching
numbers to include regulatory
reporting, financial reporting and
even taking part in the creation of
new computer systems. She has been
with the bank for almost six years and
enjoys the new challenges she faces.
Joanne’s talents don’t stop at
accounting. As an Independent Team
Leader with Weekenders Canada she
teaches women how to get the most
value out of their wardrobe, whilst
looking and feeling their best.
When she has time for extra
activities, Joanne enjoys working in
her garden. She has cultivated her
green thumb by joining the
Saskatoon Horticultural Society
where, as membership director, she
helped create a
computerized
membership
listing. As much as Joanne enjoys
being a part of the Horticultural
Society, she has stepped back from
her responsibilities to allow time with
her adorable eight month old son,
Logan.
Joanne loves to travel. Last
summer she and her family went to
Jasper, where they went on a Laden
boat tour that included Malign Lake
and a sight of the glaciers. Future
travel plans include a second visit to
Australia, and she hopes one day to
visit Europe.
A motivated, confident and
inspiring woman, Joanne has
achieved many of her goals and
ambitions.

Despite a strong breeze and some threatening clouds, the rain
stayed away, allowing more than 60 members and guests to enjoy
nine holes of golf at The Willows on Thursday, August 18th.
Afterwards, a barbeque was held at The Barn. Entertainment was provided by karaoke-singing foursomes, demonstrating
varying degrees of talent and some interesting modes of dress!
Thank you to all the members of the committee who helped
organize and run the tournament. A particular thank you, as well,
to our MC, Maureen Boa. Thank you to all who donated prizes.
