Ruined Program FINAL2
The 2010/2011 Season is made possible in part by the generosity of Joan and Irwin Jacobs Additional support is provided by Helen K. and James S. Copley Foundation Qualcomm Incorporated The City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture November 16 - December 19 Production Sponsors Mandell weiss theatre Bozeman Group LLC WELCOME TO THE PLAYHOUSE Dear Friends: Ruined, Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, personifies theatre’s power to bring the world to our doorstep and make us listen and care. Reports of the wars in the Democratic Republic of Congo rarely make the front pages of our newspapers, and major occurrences have been at a distance from our daily lives. In Ruined, we are immediately drawn into the mercurial world of Mama Nadi’s bar and brothel on the edge of a rainforest, where Congolese miners and soldiers come for respite. The women under her aegis, victimized by soldiers as the spoils of war, are refugees from plundered villages in the region. Savvy and morally ambiguous, Mama Nadi exploits her women but also protects them. She lays down the rules for the men who frequent her tiny oasis: no bullets, no brawling and leave the war at the door. As the plight of the women is brought to the fore, their pain and suffering is given voice. We cannot turn our eyes from the brutal impact of their experiences as they navigate the treacherous line between life and death. The miracle of Nottage’s Ruined is that it celebrates the women’s resilience and victory over despair — they find hope where there appears to be none. Under the circumstances of the strife in the Congo, interactions between men and women are fraught with danger and suspicion. Yet, they drink, dance and sing in defiance of the hellish conflicts that can disrupt their reprieve at any moment. Music, food, drink, sex and an occasional poem become tethers to the lifeblood of the Congo and their humanity. I’m extremely proud to partner with the Huntington Theatre Company and Berkeley Repertory Theatre, where our production will travel after its run at the Playhouse. When I first saw the play, I was riveted and ultimately shaken by its power. It lingered with me for a long time. I hope it will with you. Sincerely, Christopher Ashley Artistic Director Bozeman Group LLC We believe in theatre’s unique ability as a force for change, entertainment and enlightenment. We have long been supporters of the arts and the work Artistic Director Christopher Ashley and Managing Director Michael S. Rosenberg have accomplished throughout their careers. We are proud to join them and you in supporting La Jolla Playhouse. William Steven Bozeman Sr., William Steven Bozeman Jr. and Casey Bozeman P2 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE BOARD OF TRUSTEES Dear Patrons, You are participating in a vibrant time at La Jolla Playhouse! A recent fall evening represented a microcosm of our exciting season. Hundreds of area students and teachers gathered in the Forum to view a reading of the next Performance Outreach Program (POP) tour production of Frida Libre; corporate executives networked at a corporate supporter event Jai restaurant; Inner Circle donors listened intently to a conversation between Christopher Ashley and Limelight Director/Choreographer Warren Carlyle; invited guests attended a dress rehearsal of Notes from Underground; and an inspired audience gave a standing ovation to a performance of Limelight. This diversity of offerings is what makes the Playhouse such a special place. We were also proud to celebrate “La Jolla Playhouse 2010 Tony Award Day” on September 28, 2010, in honor of Memphis winning the 2010 Tony Award for Best Musical. Just a week later, more than 400 leaders of the bio-tech and high-tech industries came together to network and support the Playhouse during the third annual (and sold out) Innovation Night. Tonight we welcome to the stage a socially important play Ruined, which won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. So much of what La Jolla Playhouse has been able to accomplish is because of you — our audience and donors — and the support you provide. Now, we are thrilled to announce a great opportunity for your donations to stretch even further. Thanks to the generosity of a few lead donors, every new or increased donation to this season’s annual fund will be matched one-to-one. By giving generously now, your contribution will double in its impact. Please join us as we aspire to another pinnacle in the life of La Jolla Playhouse. You can make your gift today by contacting Jessica Burger, Individual Giving Associate, at (858) 550-1070 x142. Every dollar ensures that outstanding theatre continues to enrich the greater San Diego community, and indeed the nation. We thank you for working with us to make this happen, year after year. PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE P17 THE COMPANY continued from page 8 Through Life for PBS. Mr. Ashley is the recipient of the Princess Grace Award, the Drama League Director Fellowship and an NEA/TCG Director Fellowship. Michael S. Rosenberg (Managing Director) was appointed Managing Director of La Jolla Playhouse in April, 2009. During his first season, he worked in partnership with Artistic Director Christopher Ashley to produce three world premieres, including two Playhouse commissions and the hit musical Bonnie & Clyde. He was also instrumental in bringing two special engagements to the Playhouse: the international sensation Aurélia’s Oratorio and the Page To Stage workshop of John Leguizamo Diary of a Madman. Additionally, he fostered the growth of the Playhouse’s award-winning Performance Outreach Program (POP) tour, achieving the most performances at local schools in Playhouse history. Previously, Mr. Rosenberg was Co-Founder and Executive Director of Drama Dept., a New York non-profit theatre company, where he produced new works by the likes of Douglas Carter Beane, Warren Leight, Isaac Mizrahi, Paul Rudnick and David and Amy Sedaris. He has been a part of the producing teams for the Broadway productions of Grey Gardens and American Buffalo and the national tour of Little House on the Prairie. Debby Buchholz (General Manager) has served as General Manager of La Jolla Playhouse since 2002. She is a member of the Executive Committee and of the League of Resident Theaters (LORT). In 2009, she received a San Diego Women Who Mean Business Award from San Diego Business Journal. Previously she served as Counsel to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C.. She was a faculty member of the Smithsonian Institution’s program on Legal Problems of Museum Administration. Prior to the Kennedy Center, she served as a corporate attorney in New York City and Washington, DC. She is a graduate of UC San Diego and Harvard Law School. Ms. Buchholz and her husband, noted author and White House economic policy advisor Todd Buchholz, live in Solana Beach and are the proud parents of Victoria, Katherine and Alexia. Des McAnuff (Director Emeritus) served as La Jolla Playhouse’s Artistic Director from 1983 through 1994, and from 2001 through April, 2007. Under his leadership, the Playhouse garnered more than 300 awards, including the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre. Playhouse to Broadway credits: Jersey Boys (four Tony Awards); Billy Crystal’s 700 Sundays (Tony Award); How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (five Tony nominations); director and co-author with Pete Townshend on The Who’s Tommy (Tony and Olivier Awards for Best Director) and Big River (seven Tony Awards), among others. Film credits: Quills, The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, The Iron Giant (9 Animation Society awards) and Cousin Bette. Recipient of the Drama League’s 2006 Julia Hansen Award, Mr. McAnuff currently serves as Artistic Director at Canada’s Stratford Festival. In Memoriam Rita Bronowski (1917 - 2010) The staff, Board and patrons of La Jolla Playhouse are saddened by the loss of our friend Rita Bronowski — founding member, beloved trustee, donor, volunteer and lifelong theatre enthusiast. Rita was an early supporter of the effort to establish a theatre on the campus of UC San Diego, and as a member of the search committee for its artistic director, helped to set the future course of the re-born La Jolla Playhouse. She was active as a member of the Playhouse Board of Trustees, serving on a number of committees. A fervent believer in theatre for young audiences, she also supported the Playhouse’s POP Tour that brings live theatre to young people across San Diego County. Rita was a founding member of the Salk Institute Art and Science Forum, recently renamed the Bronowski Art and Science Forum, as well as a major supporter of The Old Globe and the San Diego Symphony. She was also a member of the Charter 100 Club and the English Speaking Union, where for many years she organized the Shakespeare Competition for high school students. P18 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE A steadfast supporter of the Playhouse and numerous cultural institutions in San Diego, Rita will always be an indelible part of the theatre’s past, present and future.
