He is one of our friendliest residents. Tom was born in Salt Lake City, UT, and grew up with his 2 brothers and 2 sisters. His mother Doris worked for the LDS hospital as a nurse’s aide, and his father Richard worked for a local Fire Department. When Tom turned 18, he joined the Marine Core and spent 4 years in the service. Tom was sent to Korea when the war broke out. He remembers Korea to be the most difficult time in his life as he lost many of his friends and was wounded while serving. He was an exceptional leader whom the North Korean military feared and even posted a bounty on his head. For his exceptional service to his country and his heroism he was presented with 2 Purple Hearts and a Silver Cross, although in his humble way he says the awards were not necessary. “You should not be rewarded for doing your job and getting hurt,” Tom says. When the war was over, Tom spent the remaining time of his service in Florida after which, he moved back to Utah. Tom began to work for Walgreens store and restaurant. Because of his hard work and the initiative that he took to make Walgreens a better business, he was promoted many times until he became a manager. Tom was asked to travel throughout the country to help improve Walgreens’ stores and at one point in his career was overseeing 85 stores. Tom met his wife Joyce in Salt Lake City when he hired her to work with him at one of his stores. “She had a big crush on me,” Tom recalls. They dated and later were married. Joyce became Tom’s best friend and his soulmate. Tom is a very sociable person and loves chatting with his friend’s either on line or in person. Throughout his life he made many friends, famous and not. Tom loves to cook and is very good at it too. His favorite things to make are soups. Tom has 5 children: Debbie, Tommy, Cindy, Kayleen and Karen. He also has 13 grandchildren, 8 greatgrandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Thank you for your friendship, Tom. We are proud to have you at Golden Living.
