President’s Message Winter Glow Ball Raises over $240,000 Full Story on Pages 4 & 5 Neil Fleischman I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and your 2012 is off to a great start! Here at The Arc of Monmouth, we are off to a busy and productive start. As we plan the year’s events, I am thrilled to report we have new things on the horizon. First up is our 14th Annual Step Up For The Arc Walk, but we are not only walking this year. This year, we are also having a 5K Race prior to the walk, so start training now! We will be having all of our traditional Walk activities, but this will also be a health and fitness day. Be sure to look within this issue for more information! Also coming up quickly is our Arc Golf Classic. Due to the closing of Bamm Hollow Country Club, our new home is Jumping Brook Country Club. Jumping Brook has an award-winning course and I have been there for many Arc functions. I’m sure everyone will enjoy themselves. There is also The Music Man at the Algonquin Arts Theatre and our second annual Wine Tasting. Your participation in these events greatly helps The Arc of Monmouth. Personally, I am entering into a season of advocacy for the agency. In April, I will be attending the Disability Policy Seminar in Washington, DC. I’ll be taking part in sessions to learn about the federal policy issues that impact on persons with developmental disabilities and visiting legislators with Associate Executive Director (Continued on page 2) Commitee members Phil & Arleen Fina, Chairman Anita Roselle, Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno and Joe Roselle A Very Special THANK YOU to all sponsors, donors and attendees of the Winter Glow Ball and all fundraising programs at The Arc of Monmouth! Levy, Assistant Secretary D. Roderick Webster, Assistant Treasurer Philip Fina Julie Lin Bill Mirkin Joyce Quarles Anita Roselle Randall B. Smith Rachel Weiss “Change is inevitable - except from a vending machine.” Robert C. Gallagher Change happens. Some of it we welcome, some we regret. The Arc of Monmouth has continually changed and evolved throughout its 63 years of existence. For various reasons The Arc has stopped offering certain types of services throughout our history. We no longer provide a camp or early intervention services as we did earlier in our history, for example. Meanwhile, we have added new services and supports for individuals and families. Soon we will be closing another program, our Dorothy B. Hersh High School. The school has provided an excellent education for decades. Most of the current students are graduating in June, and we will close the doors at the end of the school year. There are always tears of pride at the high school graduations, and now they will be mingled with tears of sadness. I cannot offer our school employees enough thanks for all of their fine work over the years. Change is also coming with the addition of new services. As of July, we plan to offer the Achievement Zone, an exciting new service to support young persons transitioning from high school to adult life. We are also very pleased to be a part of the affordable housing apartment project to be built next door to The Arc Center in Tinton Falls. Up to 16 apartments in the new building will be earmarked for persons served by The Arc. This provides a wonderful new opportunity for us to serve people in need of residential services. Hopefully construction will start this spring and the units will be ready in about 18 months. Watch for more news of this project, known as Meadowbrook II, as the months go by. Honorary Members Thomas J. Mitchell John P. Murray 4 Executive Director Mary E. Scott Associate Executive Director Kathleen Mullery Assistant Executive Director Suzanne Liberi The Turning Point Editor Tara A. Luft Brett Colby President’s Message Same Program, New Name for The Arc of Monmouth, Kathy Mullery. I am eager to learn all that I can about these issues, in addition to conveying my thoughts to our government. But I cannot speak for everyone. Please remember to act on the action alerts that you receive from The Arc on the local, state and national levels. Our mission becomes stronger with each voice, email or letter. In keeping with The Arc’s theme of “Achieve with us”, we are changing the name of our Adult Training Centers to (continued from page 1) March is Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month! 2 Achievement Centers. The new name reflects the commitment of The Arc to provide many opportunities for persons attending the centers to learn and grow. Winter 2012_New template.qxd 2/17/2012 11:18 AM Page 4 March Is the Month to Make Your Mark Thanks to the advocacy efforts of The Arc in the 1980s, President Ronald Reagan officially declared March to be Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. For nearly a quarter of a century, The Arc and its network of 700+ chapters across the country, including The Arc of Monmouth, have fostered respect and access for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). We have made tremendous progress in promoting and protecting the rights of people with I/DD and creating opportunities for them to live, learn and work as valued members of their communities. But there is much work left to do. In 2012, a pivotal national election year, we are fighting to protect support systems in the face of tough economic times and drastic budget cuts. Since many people with disabilities rely on publicly funded services to fully participate in their communities, policymakers and candidates need to know you are concerned about continuing these vital services. Take advantage of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month to make your mark on this election by getting involved and getting active today. What Can You Do? • Jump in. Contact the Development Office to volunteer or donate. Call (732) 493-1919 ext. 125. • Speak out. Contact your legislator or candidate today and let them know you expect them to support public policy to assist people with I/DD. • Spread the word. Educate yourself about issues important to the I/DD community then tell the world what you found out. Use March as a great excuse to post your positive thoughts about the I/DD movement on your Facebook page or Twitter account. Follow The Arc of Monmouth on Facebook and Twitter and express yourself. Or go “old-school” with a good, old-fashioned letter to the editor of your local newspaper explaining to your community why they should care about I/DD. Join us during March to help raise awareness. Find out more about I/DD and what you can do at www.thearcofmonmouth.org today! Walk, Run and Golf - Register Now to Support The Arc! Spring is upon us, which means that its time for two of our largest fundraising events! First up is the 14th Annual “Step Up For The Arc” Walk on S a t u r d a y, May 5. This year, we are adding a 5K Race for you running aficionados! May 5 Schedule 7am: 5K registration/8am: 5k Race 9am: Walk registration/10 am: Walk 5K registration fees are $20 before April 30, and $25 after April 30. You can also register the day of the event! All runners will receive a t-shirt! Although there is no money required to walk, a contribution of $25 will get you a free t-shirt! For walkers who help us raise funds by collecting pledges, we have some wonderful additional prizes. Pre-Registration brochures will be arriving soon, or you can visit www.arcofmonmouth.org/walk to: - register for the Walk, 5K or both! - pledge money for a participant - become a sponsor! As always, the Masons will be serving up free hot dogs for lunch! On Monday, June 11, the 3rd Annual Edward M. Rosell Memorial Arc Golf Classic will take place. This year, we are thrilled to be playing at Jumping Brook Country Club in Neptune. The Golf Classic is a wonderful event, featuring a BBQ lunch, modfied scramble tournament, raffles, prizes, cocktails and dinner. NOW is the time to register as a sponsor or player! For more details, sponsor information or to register for these events, please contact the Development Department at (732) 493-1919 or [email protected] Complete details and online registration can also be found at: www.arcofmonmouth.org/golf www.arcofmonmouth.org/walk Both events are critical to The Arc of Monmouth, because the funds raised help to sustain a wide array of programs and services for individuals with I/DD. 3 Winter 2012_New template.qxd 2/17/2012 11:18 AM Page 5 45th Anniversary Winter Glow Ball It wouldn’t be the first Friday of December without a Winter Glow Ball, and this one was no different. The month was kicked off on Friday, December 2nd with the 45th Annual Winter Glow Ball at the gorgeous Shore Casino in Atlantic Highlands. Over $240,000 was raised at the event. The affair honored Eric Hinds of Holmdel, co-founder of Hope for Children Foundation New Jersey, which has raised over one million dollars for local non-profits including The Arc of Monmouth. In January of 2011, he was sworn into the Holmdel Township Committee. Honoree Eric Hinds with Senator & Mrs. Joseph Kyrillos Performance artist Tim Decker wowed the crowd by creating two of his famous “speed portraits” – large scale paintings completed in less than five minutes each and then auctioned off at the start of the live auction. In addition, the ever-popular silent auction was held, and the Infernos band kept everyone on the dance floor. Ball Chairman Anita Roselle commented, “Despite the persistently shaky economy, we feel truly blessed to witness the outpouring of support from sponsors and attendees.” Eric and Karen Hinds The Arc of Monmouth would like to thank Anita Roselle and her committee for their tireless efforts to make this event a success. Mark your calendars for Friday, December 7, 2012 for our 46th Winter Glow Ball where we will honor Peter Cancro of Jersey Mike’s Subs.… a party not to be missed! The Lakewood BlueClaws have partnered with The Arc of Monmouth for a very special fundraising program. The Arc of Monmouth has a block of great tickets for games on Saturday, June 30 and Friday, August 24. For every $10 ticket purchased through The Arc of Monmouth, a donation is made to our charity! If you attend the June 30 game, be sure to visit the concession stand, where you might be served by some familiar faces from The Arc of Monmouth! Purchase tickets online at www.arcofmonmouth.org/blueclaws, or by mailing a check (made payable to The Arc of Monmouth) to The Arc of Monmouth, 1158 Wayside Road, Tinton Falls, NJ 07712. If you are interested in helping as a ticket seller or concession volunteer, or have any questions, email [email protected] or call (732) 493-1919 ext. 125. 76 Trombones! On Sunday, April 22, join us for a special performance of The Music Man, at the historic Algonquin Theatre in Manasquan. Prime seats to this classic musical comedy are only $27 each when purchased through The Arc of Monmouth, and each ticket purchase results in a $10 donation to support our programs and services! The Music Man tells the tale of Harold Hill, the lovable con man who convinces a town full of stubborn Iowans that salvation can be found by buying instruments for a boy’s band. His attempts to swindle the town out of their money are thwarted when he falls in love with Marian, the town’s Librarian. The role originally made famous by Robert Preston will be performed by The Arc of Monmouth’s own Brett Colby. Before coming to The Arc, Brett led a 15 year international career as an opera singer and actor. Tickets can be purchased securely with PayPal at www.arcofmonmouth.org/theatre, or by mailing a check (made payable to The Arc of Monmouth) to The Arc of Monmouth, 1158 Wayside Road, Tinton Falls, NJ 07712. If you haven’t been there in a while, or you’ve never been there, make a point to get there soon because there is only one word that can be used to describe it … GORGEOUS! It’s like a whole new store! It was time for a clean up and clean out! With such a small space, and so many generous donations, the store was becoming difficult to shop in, let alone keep organized. So this past spring, The Arc of Monmouth held our own version of Clean House and spent a week cleaning and organizing the store. The result is a wellorganized, clean atmosphere where you can see everything! Don’t be mistaken, for those of you who love the thrill and search for hidden treasure, they are still there, they are just a little easier to find! The store is chock full of house wares, clothing, books, linens, collectibles, knick-knacks and decorative items all waiting to be found and purchased. Donations arrive every day so there is always something new!! So come on over to 154 Main Street in Matawan. We’re sure you’ll become a regular! The store hours are 9:30 AM to 4 PM Monday through Saturday, and. Thursday until 5 PM. Donations are accepted during business hours. Unfortunately, we are not able to accept the following: furniture, toys, stuffed animals, baby items (car seats, pack and plays, cribs, swings, etc.), sporting equipment, Christmas trees, electronics. Look for a Grand Re-Opening this Spring! Winter 2012_New template.qxd 2/17/2012 11:18 AM Page 8 Shore Center Seeking Referrals The Shore Achievement Center, a component of The Arc of Monmouth’s Adult Services Department, is a place where miracles happen. This Center supports individuals with severe intellectual and physical disabilities, and persons in declining health. Many of the individuals require intensive training and support in completing daily living skills including toileting, food preparation, feeding and mobility assistance. Health conditions for some persons served at Shore are of a more severe nature and require monitoring blood pressure, blood sugar levels, seizure activity and skin integrity. Many individuals receive health-related services such as injections, breathing treatments and tube feedings. A nurse is on staff. However, when you walk into Shore, you find it is a lively, fun and exciting atmosphere, helping the individuals there to reach their highest levels of achievement. They are motivated to push themselves to attain their goals, and increase independent functioning through a variety of activities. To accomplish this, computer skills, sensory stimulation, reading groups and personal care are incorporated into daily programming. In addition, the Center hosts the Dental Clinic, Podiatry Clinic and visits from the Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired as “I can’t say enough about the Shore well as a non-verbal comProgram. There are openings in this program, and we are actively seeking referrals. If you or someone you know might be interested in finding out what this wonderful program can do for someone you love, call 732-938-2525. National Sibling Council Earlier this month, The Arc announced a new partnership with the national Sibling Leadership Network (SLN) and formed The Arc’s National Sibling Council to foster the active involvement of siblings of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The sibling relationship is unique, and siblings are critical to ensuring the full inclusion and participation of their loved ones in all aspects of life. The partnership with SLN and the National Sibling Council will connect siblings with each other and offer them opportunities to impact policy, service delivery and the quality of life for millions of Americans with I/DD. The programs will also offer support for those looking for answers to questions unique to their families. Visit the “I Am A Sibling” page at thearc.org to get involved. Your membership in The Arc of Monmouth (which also gives you membership at the state and national level) entitles you to membership in the National Sibling Council. If you are not already a member of The Arc of M o n m o u t h , see page 11, visit arcofmonmouth.org/membership or call 732-493-1919, ext. 122. Employment Services Receives United Way Grant For the second year in a row, The Arc of Monmouth’s Employment Services Department was awarded an Income Impact Funding Grant from the United Way of Monmouth County. The funded program is designed to address and overcome barriers to employment, develop skills and enhance independence. Four new individuals were carefully selected to participate and joined the program in October. Since then, they have been getting to know each other and familiarizing themselves with the program and its requirements. They are beginning to gain confidence, and recognizing their abilities and skills through employment assessments. In addition, they are starting to develop interview and travel skills. The next step will be exposure to places of employment that match the individuals’ skills, interests and talents. We are confident that at the end of the program, these individuals, like the previous group, will be ready for community employment and a successful career. 7 Winter 2012_New template.qxd 2/17/2012 11:18 AM Page 9 Work Opportunity Center Provides Emergency Kits to State Office of Homeland Security (OHS) Would you like to save us a Stamp? The Arc of Monmouth’s Work Opportunity Center (WOC) is helping the State of New Jersey be prepared should disaster strike. Since September of 2011, WOC has produced 27,000 emergency kits for the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security (OHS) on set-aside through ACCSES-New Jersey C.N.A. Services. We will be happy to email a PDF copy of The Turning Point! Individuals served at WOC package sets of nine disposable bath towels into ziplock bags and place them with other toiletries such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, and hand sanitizer into a heat-sealed, heavier gauge bag. A label with the OHS seal is placed on the front of the kits and packed for shipment. All hands were truly on deck as all of the individuals served at WOC worked on the emergency kits. WOC Director Linda Porter reported, “WOC individuals really got a sense of the availability of help in the event of an emergency in the state through this job.” The New Jersey Office of Homeland Security & Preparedness responds and helps with recovery for the consequences of intentional or unintentional emergencies, disaster, or catastrophic events within our state. Visit the OHS website at www.ready.gov. Be informed, make a plan, build a kit, get involved. WOC did! Eatontown Achievement Centers Make a Difference at Lunch Break The Centers at Eatontown (Meridian and Eatontown) spent time this summer volunteering in the community at Lunch Break in Red Bank. Each week during the month of August, a group of served individuals would venture to Drs. James Parker Boulevard in Red Bank to volunteer at Lunch Break, a flourishing soup kitchen and food pantry. The group primarily worked on the clothing giveaway project, putting donated items out and assisting customers with bagging, prior to sharing a wonderful meal. After lunch, the group bagged, labelled and stored away the leftover clothing and other items. On some days, there were other projects such as bagging candy and tea bags, sorting hangers, cleaning surfaces in the dining area and folding cutlery into napkins. Wonderful working relationships have been established between these volunteers and the Lunch Break staff. The experience of helping in the community hands-on and face-to-face was valued by the volunteers. To their delight, they were asked to extend their volunteering at the conclusion of their time and will be helping at Lunch Break through the winter months. 8 Help The Arc of Monmouth reduce printing and postage costs by asking to “Go Green”! Hersh High School at the end of the 2011-2012 school year due to declining enrollment. “We are very sorry to see the end of the school, where the staff has provided exceptional individualized services for students with intellectual disabilities for many years, helping them transition to adult life”, said Executive Director Mary Scott. Over the years, the philosophy regarding education of young persons with disabilities has evolved, and school districts in New Jersey and across the country have more often kept students with disabilities of all ages in schools within their home districts. The fiscal climate has also led school districts to find the most cost-effective ways of serving their students, and this has increased the development of programs within local schools. Referrals to many private schools have fallen. “I want to express sincere appreciation to the employees of Hersh High for the wonderful education they have offered to the many graduates of the school”, stated Mary Scott. “They are an outstanding group and have had a very positive impact on the lives of the students and families they have served.” Though the high school will be closing, The Arc of Monmouth has a strong continued commitment to working with young persons and their families. The Arc offers assistance with transition of students from high school to adult life, education advocacy, the Keep Achieving (KACH) program at Brookdale Community College, recreational opportunities for teenagers, and more. Please contact The Arc’s Department of Individual and Family Supports (732-493-1919) for information. The Achievement Zone: A New Option for Transition to Adulthood Effective July 2012, The Arc of Monmouth will be offering a new transition option for students aged 18 to 21 who have completed their academic requirements, and for young adults who have graduated high school within the last few years and are in self-directed services (pending approval by the Division of Developmental Disabilities). Known as The Achievement Zone, the program is designed to offer young persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities an individualized experience that is fully focused on each person’s transition to adulthood. The Achie veme nt Z one Learning experiences available through the Achievement Zone will be varied, and will include preparing for and entering jobs and/or volunteer work, self-advocacy, use of today’s technology, using community businesses and resources, getting around by specialized and public transportation, consumer economics, leisure and recreation, household management and maintenance, the arts, preparing for college and auditing college classes. Associate Executive Director of The Arc of Monmouth Kathy Mullery said, “The Arc is very happy to be offering this new opportunity for young adults and their families. Transition from high school to adulthood can be challenging, but is also very exciting. The new center will enable young people to select their path and takes steps forward.” To learn more about the zone, call (732) 493-1919 ext. 600 or visit www.arcofmonmouth.org/zone. 9 Winter 2012_New template.qxd 2/17/2012 11:18 AM Page 11 Annual Appeal Donors The following were received since the last issue of The Turning Point went to press.
