His own education started at Orange School in Waterloo. He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1953. Following graduation, Bob served two years in the U.S. Army. He completed his Master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. In 1961, he became the Assistant Principal at Peet, working with Principal Frank Horn. After a two year hiatus in Charles City, he returned to Cedar Falls in 1967, and became the Principal at Peet Junior High. Bob retired in 1993 after 25 years. According to one of his nominators, “Bob was highly respected by his students, staff and parents during his long time career as a school administrator. He understood that student success came about as a result of an empowered group of teachers and staff. Bob was a ‘behind the scenes’ leader and always said his staff deserved all the credit for the academic and extracurricular success of the Peet students.” “He is one of the most caring individuals with whom I have worked”, shared another nominator. “He had a deep respect for every student and knew then by name…he was serious about education and meeting the needs of each and every student.” Bob continues to serve his community as a 40 year member of Kiwanis and as an active committee member at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Bob, and his wife, Hazel will celebrate 55 years of marriage in June. They are the parents of Ted, Jan, Teri, Kathy, and Scott. They have 10 grandchildren and 1 greatgrandchild. Bob and his family have enjoyed the Sturgis Falls Celebration over the years, but his absolute favorite event is the Parade, which he will be honored to lead! Greg and Lea Ann’s love for the community can be seen in their support and involvement of many local events and organizations. Some of these include: the Sturgis Falls Car Show, Sturgis Falls 50’s & 60’s Dance, UNI McLeod Center, Alternatives Pregnancy Center, Cedar Falls Schools, American Heart Association, Sartori Festival of Trees, Mix Kids, Tornado and Flood relief and the Cedar Falls Community Main Street Holiday Hoopla. Their vision for a beautiful event center for Cedar Falls resulted in the PIPAC Centre on the Lake. This “crown jewel” facility was the dream of Greg and Lea Ann and is named after their successful 30 year-old health and life insurance brokerage business, Professional Insurance Planners and Consultants of Iowa, (PIPAC). Many families, organizations and businesses enjoy the use of this facility. The Sturgis Falls Celebration is one of the Saul’s favorite times of the year. The parade has been a family favorite for many years. It was tradition to meet Bob and Marge Saul, Greg’s folks, in front of the Richardson Funeral Home after grabbing the mini donuts and chocolate milk! Lea Ann believes that floats should be spectacular and has helped created several award-winning floats for her church. Greg loves cars and was instrumental in starting the ever-growing Sturgis Falls Annual Car Show. He is proud to be a part of this event every year and you can usually see one of his trophy cars in the parade carrying dignitaries. Check out the fantastic classic cars at the car show on Sunday! Greg and Lea Ann Saul welcome you to the 2011 Sturgis Falls Celebration. 2011 Cover Artist Todd Smith Todd Smith grew up in Cedar Falls. Attending Sturgis Falls activities were the norm for his family. He has fond memories of spending time with his buddies at Central Park and the nearby creek and wooded area. His favorite Sturgis Falls memories involve “hanging out with friends”. Two of his life-long friends are also familiar faces to Sturgis Falls Celebration; they are John Ashlock and Rob Swiatly. After graduating from Cedar Falls High School in 1986, Todd attended Hawkeye Community College and graduated with an Associate of Applied Arts Degree. He currently resides in Rochester, Minnesota where he has worked since 1995. Todd has experience working in the prepress and graphic design field, including computer and traditional art. Todd and his wife, Linda with their children, Alex (age 10) and Eric (age 6) are excited to return to Cedar Falls to attend Todd’s 25th Class Reunion, which will occur during Sturgis Falls weekend, as well as connecting with family and friends. www.sturgisfalls.org 3 2011 Cornerstone Award Lewellan’s Food Market The Sturgis Falls Celebration is proud to present Lewellan’s Food Market/Lewellan Family, the Cornerstone Award for contributing to the quality of life in our community. Lewellan’s Food Market has been a fixture in Cedar Falls since 1949. The small grocery has stood the test of time at the corner of 8th and Tremont Street. Orlo and Katherine Lewellan, better known as “Mr. and Mrs. Lew”, owned and operated the store for 56 years. The Lewellan’s touched many lives, from the elementary school children who stopped in to buy a snack before and after school, to neighborhood families who would drop in for a quick chat and a gallon of milk, eggs, or fresh meat that Orlo cut himself. Mr. and Mrs. Lew knew that their business was about family and community. While operating their quaint little grocery store, they raised three children: Paul (Bettendorf, IA), Kathe (Jacksonville, FL), and Gail (St. Paul, MN). After Orlo’s death in 1991, Katherine continued to operate the store another 14 years. In 2005, she retired, sold the store, and now lives in Bettendorf near her son. The legacy of Lewellan’s Food Market lives on thanks to former customers, Chris and Carol Lattimer, who now own and operate the store. 4 www.sturgisfalls.org www s org 408 Viking Road, Cedar Falls 319-277-7641 www.martinbrothersfoodmarket.com Open To The Public, No Membership Fees! He and his family have been living in Cedar Falls a couple of years longer than that. Originally growing up in Dubuque, he lived in Florida and California before coming back to school at UNI. While living in the San Francisco area, Dean first experienced juggling by the local street performers. In 1986, he graduated with a degree in Math Education from UNI and also started performing a comedy juggling act around the Midwest. These days he performs around 75 - 100 shows a year for all types of events and venues. He has been performing at Sturgis Falls for over 20 years. Dean is an adjunct instructor at UNI in the Math Department and enjoys teaching as much as performing. In 2010, he won an award for Excellence in Teaching Liberal Arts Core courses. He has also taught several semesters at Wartburg College in Waverly. Dean and his wife, Jolene, live on an acreage north of Cedar Falls. Jolene often joins him in his act. His daughter, Angel, and son-in-law, Jeremy, live in Cedar Falls. No liquor, beer or wine may be brought into the Cedar Falls parks during the Sturgis Falls Celebration Weekend: June 24 through June 26, 2011. NO COOLERS. Weather Cancellation Policy: When inclement weather is imminent, a decision will be made to postpone or cancel activities depending on the severity of the predicted conditions and the public’s safety. Lightning is the biggest factor. Cedar Falls City Council has passed the following ordinance: Dogs and cats are prohibited from public playgrounds or parks during the last Friday, Saturday and Sunday of June each and every year, except if such animals are part of an organized public activity such as a canine frisbee contest. The Franklin Street/Center Street Bridge WILL be open to twoway single lane traffic. Please keep the interior sidewalks in Overman Park clear for emergency personnel. Stopping on the interior sidewalk also impairs the vision of seated spectators. Please be respectful of others! There is NO soliciting of any kind allowed in the Parks during the Celebration weekend! Please obey the reduced speed signs and use the pedestrian crosswalks on 1st Street between Main Street and Iowa Street. Sartori Hospital will have a First Aid/Rest Tent in Overman Park and on The Green in Sturgis Park Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Mosquito control: Professional pest control personnel will use only legally authorized chemicals in line with all local, state & federal regulations. A public notice will be posted. During her high school years, Sarah has taken multiple Advanced Placement classes and exhibited strong academic, athletic, organizational skills and leadership abilities, while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average. She lettered in Academics, Swimming, and Track and Field. Sarah’s extra-curricular activities include: Yearbook (Editor-in-Chief), National Honor Society, and Student Senate. Away from school, she attended Dixie’s School of Dance for 13 years and was a piano student for 10 years. Sarah currently volunteers at: Allen Memorial Hospital, Cedar Valley Hospitality House, Habitat for Humanity, and her church. These opportunities have provided Sarah with a unique perspective about people; “volunteering around the community has also taught me much about the world and the people in it. Working with many different types of people during my various service projects was a challenge at times, but the end result was always worth the rough patches.” In her free time, Sarah enjoys photo editing and graphic design, playing the piano, reading, dance, sports, being outdoors, and time with family and friends. She’s passionate about school. Sarah has enjoyed many parts of the Sturgis Falls Celebration, rather than having one particular event or special memory, she believes the “feeling of community” she gets when attending is her strongest memory. In the fall, Sarah plans to attend Boston College and double major in Spanish and Accounting. Austin Javellana, son of Joby and Tracy Javellana of Cedar Falls, is a 2011 graduate of Cedar Falls High School. Throughout high school Austin maintained a 4.0 grade point average while participating in extra-curricular activities, volunteering at church, working year-round as a life guard, and teaching piano lessons. He was active in Student Senate, Sophomore and Junior Leadership, and as a Special Needs Peer Helper. Austin participated in Track and Field, Cross Country, Co-ed Cheerleading, Cedar Falls Jazz I, and Marching Band. As a member of St. Patrick Church, Austin has volunteered on the Music Committee since 2005 and the Retreat Team since 2009, as well as participating in Mission trips to Mexico and San Francisco. He’s passionate about mission work and hopes to return to a mission base in San Francisco in the future. In his free time, he enjoys sand volleyball in the summer months, and snowboarding in the winter. One of his favorite memories relating to the Sturgis Falls Celebration was when part of his extended family was in town for the festivities and he and about 25 cousins spent time hanging out at Overman Park and his Grandma’s house all weekend. Austin will be attending Iowa State University in the fall and plans to major in Architecture or Landscape Architecture. Eric Neill, son of David and Cheryl Neill of Cedar Falls, is a 2011 graduate of Cedar Falls High School. Eric achieved a cumulative 3.983 GPA, has been in Honors and Advanced Placement classes, and at Kirkwood Community College. During his high school career, he participated in Cross Country, Soccer, Dance Team, Choir, Band, Orchestra, and Theatre as well as holding leadership positions in these activities. Away from school, Eric has been involved in Scouting. He has participated from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts, including earning the Eagle Scout Award. He’s served in every leadership role for his troop over the past eight years. Eric has attended two National Jamborees, and one World Jamboree, and will be a staff volunteer at the 2011 World Jamboree in Rinkaby, Sweden. In his free time Eric enjoys playing piano, camping, sailing, running, and watching the Green Bay Packers. He has studied piano for 12 years and enjoys a broad variety of music, performs at his church, and with several choirs and local small groups. A memorable Sturgis Falls family tradition includes getting the first bag of mini-donuts each year. According to Eric, “tradition may be important, but formality is not. Things get vicious when my Dad eats more than his share (because he usually does). Fortunately, the situation has a simple remedy, we buy another bag!” In August, Eric plans to attend Iowa State University where he plans to major in Biology with a focus on Pre-Med in preparation for fulfilling his dream of becoming a Physician. www.sturgisfalls.org 29 2011 Arts & Crafts Fair Vendors Ac-cents by Beth ........................Jewelry Accessory Studio
