In addition to her position as Professor of Music at USA where she teaches flute, music history/literature and chamber music, she is the principal flutist with Mobile Symphony Orchestra where she has been a featured soloist on several occasions. Her newest project is the CD Clinton on Clinton, the culmination of a research project which has been to rediscover the music of John Clinton (1809-1864), an Irish flutist, composer and flutemaker who was a major figure in the nineteenth-century flute design controversy. For this project, she performed Clinton's music on seven flutes manufactured by Clinton & Co. over 150 years ago! This research has been presented to the National Flute Association and the British Flute Society. Her chamber ensemble for flute and strings, the Silverwood Quartet, has performed throughout the United States and in Japan, including a performance for the National Flute Association. The group specializes in exploring popular and world music in addition to the classical repertoire. Also the group’s primary arranger, Andra’s creative charts capture the musical essence of styles ranging from Irish traditional to Tibetan Chant and alternative rock and roll. Their newest project, A Celtic Mosaic, explores a variety of unique and original music from Celtic sources including music from Riverdance, Lord of the Rings, Ballykissangel and a trilogy of tunes by Loreena McKennitt. The Classic Rock Album, was released in 2005. Rock icon Ian Anderson, flutist and leader of Jethro Tull, said, "Many thanks for the CD. I enjoyed it very much and especially the variety of musical styles it incorporated. Keep up the good work and help bring the worlds of pop/rock and the Classical traditions together." She also performs on Irish and other folk flutes with her group Mithril, a high-energy Celtic/world music band, which has released four CDs which have been featured on NPR's syndicated show "Celtic Connections." Mithril is currently being featured with symphony orchestras for “Celtic Christmas,” "Celtic Halloween" and "Celtic Celebration" pops concerts. Andra performs and records on flutes of all shapes and sizes (classical, traditional wooden, baroque and a variety of ethnic instruments), as well as Celtic harp. Wilfred Delphin holds the B.M., M.M. and D.M.A. degrees in piano. For many years he performed in partnership with New Orleans native, Edwin Romain (deceased). The Delphin & Romain piano duo enjoyed an international career performing regularly in the United States, Europe, South America and Asia. Their New York debut was in Carnegie Hall with the Symphony of the New World, Everett Lee conducting. Subsequently, they appeared with many of this country’s major orchestras and conductors - among them the New York Philharmonic with Zubin Mehta, the Minnesota Orchestra with Sir Neville Marriner, the Chicago Symphonetta with Paul Freeman, The New Orleans Philharmonic with Werner Torkanowski and Zednic McCall, The Cleveland Orchestra and the Atlanta Symphony. As a result of their recital debuts in the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall, Delphin and Romain were invited by President Jimmy Carter to perform a solo recital in the East Room of the White House. Since his partner’s untimely death, Dr. Delphin has continued to teach and to perform as a collaborative pianist. Individually and as part of the team he has received awards and recognitions from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Music Teachers National Association, the Phi Mu Alpha and Mu Phi Epsilon national music fraternities, the New Orleans Black Chorale and the New Orleans Creole Heritage Society. The State of South Carolina awarded him its highest recognition, the Elizabeth O’Neal Verner Award for contributions to community arts and the Baldwin Piano Company named him to its artist roster and its list of “Celebrated Artists.” He presents master classes and adjudicates for various music organizations. He has been a grants panelist for state arts councils in South Carolina and Illinois in addition to serving on panels for the National Endowment for the Arts and National 9 Mississippi Music Teacher Collegiate Competitions 2016 Endowment for the Humanities in Washington, D. C. In 2005 Dr. Delphin took an early retirement with the title of Professor Emeritus from the School of Music at Southern Illinois University – Carbondale. He joined the Peace Corps and was posted in Senegal, West Africa. However, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, he returned to Xavier University in New Orleans as a volunteer for two years and then in 2008 assumed the position which he currently holds of Artist in Residence/Professor of Music. He performs regularly with many of the areas finest vocal soloists, the Patriotic Project Children’s Choir and the popular ensemble, Opera Creole. Dr. Delphin is this year’s recipient of the Gambit Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Jeff Kensmoe is the Chair of the Music Department and Associate Professor of Voice and Opera at Birmingham-Southern College. Dr. Kensmoe has had an extensive performance career singing in opera and musical theatre productions throughout the United States and around the world. Some of his work includes Einstein on the Beach, Killer of Enemies, The Magic Flute, Hänsel and Gretel, The Secret Marriage, The Ballad of Baby Doe, Trial By Jury, Street Scene, Camelot, Sayonara, She Loves Me, Phantom, The American Phantom, Phantom of the Opera, I Do, I Do, and Bending Toward the Light: A Jazz Nativity. He has been a bass-baritone soloist in Masses and oratorios across the United States, including Bloch’s Sacred Service, Stravinsky’s Les Noce, Brahm’s A German Requiem, Fauré’s Requiem, Mozart’s Requiem, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Schubert’s Mass in G and Mass in E Flat and Handel’s Messiah. He has appeared on television in the Sondhiem Gala at Carnegie Hall on PBS, the Guiding Light on CBS and has been a guest artist at the New Zealand and former West German Embassies. Dr. Kensmoe is currently the Vice President of the Alabama chapter of NATS, and holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Northern Colorado. Daniel Lelchuk was appointed Assistant Principal cellist of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra in 2013 by music director Carlos Miguel Prieto; he holds the same position with the New Orleans Opera Association. Described by The Washington Post as a “dazzling virtuoso,” he is the recipient of an award from the Angela Prokopp Foundation of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Having played throughout North America, the Middle East, Asia, and Europe, he was invited as visiting cellist with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra in Doha and also performed as principal cello at the Royal Opera House Muscat (Oman) with the Castleton Opera. He has performed at numerous international festivals including those of Baden---Baden and Salzburg, and has given chamber music concerts with such musicians as Alex Kerr, Jorja Fleezanis, Steve Wryczynski, and members of the Vienna Philharmonic. He also serves as cellist for New Orleans based chamber ensemble Lyrica Baroque. At the invitation of Prince Nicolò Boncompagni Ludovisi, he presented a series of solo cello recitals at the famed Villa Aurora, Rome. Originally from New Hampshire, Daniel Lelchuk studied with Eric Kim at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music (Bloomington) where he received the Eva Heinitz scholarship and played as principal cello of the Indiana University Philharmonic and Opera orchestras. He began cello when not yet five, studying for ten years with Donna Denniston, followed by studies with Sato Knudsen (Boston Symphony Orchestra), and, for a year in Rome, with Francesco Strano (‘I Musici’ and the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia). A founding member of the Castleton Chamber Players with violinist Eric Silberger, Daniel Lelchuk served from 2010-2014 as principal cellist of the Castleton Festival under Maestro Lorin Maazel. 10 Mississippi Music Teacher Collegiate Competitions 2016 2016 MMTA COLLEGIATE COMPETITIONS 2016 MMTA COLLEGIATE COMPETITIONS Participants Teachers Participants andand Teachers STUDENTS Minji Kim TEACHERS Jung-Won Shin SCHOOL Delta State University Laura Root Pitts Phyllis Lewis-Hale Hillary Watkins Phyllis Lewis-Hale Jackson State University Jackson State University Kayla Wilson Phyllis Lewis-Hale Jackson State University Aja Brimm Phyllis Lewis-Hale Jackson State University Kennedy Jarrell Meri Newell Tanner Crabtree Meri Newell Reagan Arnold Susan Smith Stephanie Harris Jones Susan Smith Gabrielle Paricka Joanna Burnside Jones County Community College Jones County Community College Jones County Community College Jones County Community College Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Christopher Cunningham Rachel Heard Millsaps College Angela Powell Rachel Heard Millsaps College Abby Weisnstein Janette Fontaine Mississippi State University Jairo Garcia Ellen Elder Leo Moreira Nicholas Ciraldo University of Southern Mississippi University of Southern Mississippi 11 Mississippi Music Teacher Collegiate Competitions 2016 Andrei Jan Hoffman Uller Nicholas Ciraldo University of Southern Mississippi Holly Stokes Elizabeth Moak Nick Joslin Brian Murphy University of Southern Mississippi William Cary Rebecca Robinson Brian Murphy Ryan Cobb Rosangela Sebba William Cary Mississippi State University Andrea Restrepo Alexander Russakovsky Valerio Pajon Ellen Elder Shih-Ting Shao Hsaiopei Lee Nicolas Mendoza Garzon Hsaiopei Lee Ana Maria Diaz Herrera Hsaiopei Lee University of Southern Mississippi University of Southern Mississippi University of Southern Mississippi University of Southern Mississippi University of Southern Mississippi 12 Mark Your Calendar April 2 -6, 2016 – 2016 MTNA National Conference, San Antonio, TX April 2, 2016 – Group A MMTA 2016 Pre-College Auditions – Goodman, Hattiesburg, Jackson, Oxford, and Tupelo April 9, 2016 – Group B MMTA 2016 Pre-College Auditions – Columbus/Starkville, Ellisville, Gulf Coast, Vicksburg April 16, 2016 – Mississippi Valley State Piano Festival, Itta Bena May 21, 2016 – MMTA Pre-College Finals – The University of Mississippi, Oxford Do you have an event you would like to be placed in the Mississippi Music Teacher?
