“The teeth and jaw area of the body is a complex, interrelated
mechanism that affects not only oral health but also a person’s overall
well-being,” explains Dr. Martin.
“For example, a misaligned jaw joint can cause headaches and even
migraines. A poor bite (how the teeth meet) can cause difficulty in chewing
as well as wearing away teeth through grinding. It’s vital that these factors
are taken into account when planning someone’s treatment.”

“It is the type of care you would like to have anyway,” says Dr. Martin.

gum disease and the bite mechanism magnify, especially if a person
loses teeth and intervention is needed to stop all teeth from being lost.
This is complex care dentistry.

The advent of lasers in dentistry has created

contouring gum or bone, cleaning out
diseased root canals, stimulating healing

Treatment
Using the Lightwalker laser, featured to
the left, Dr. Martin treats gum disease
(periodontal disease). The laser removes
calculus from the root without any force,
making the procedure extremely fast,
efficient and comfortable.
The laser also effectively sterilizes the
gum pockets, helping prevent the return of
the gum infection.
Digital X-Rays use

What is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is an artficial tooth root
made of titanium. It is placed in the jaw
bone and a crown is placed on top.

ana Souders had neglected his teeth for a while

Starting with taking 3-D x-rays of the
mouth, Dr. Martin plans Alan’s complete
course of implant placement and
restoration. Using 3D virtual software,
he can plan ahead of time the exact
location and angle in which to place the
titanium root.
For mouths with insufficient bone
to support an implant, he uses a
revolutionary bone regeneration
technique. Once the implant is placed,
Dr. Martin lets it bond completely with
the jawbone, and during that process
can provide the patient with a temporary
tooth. At the end of the integration
process, he places the new tooth. n

Typically teeth are whitened with in-office and at-home teeth

These can be handled with dental bonding, the application of
tooth-colored material, or for more permanency and a beautiful
appearance, porcelain veneers.

These can be closed with porcelain veneers or crowns.

Along with orthodontic solutions, crooked teeth can be given
a uniform appearance with porcelain veneers. This is a very

Until recently, the preparation for veneers has been similar to that for dental crowns. With new high-strength
porcelain materials now available, Dr. Martin can place veneers without any shaving down of the teeth.
A
veneer is a thin porcelain facing placed over teeth to
effect an immediate and, sometimes, dramatic change in a
person’s smile.
Typical conditions changed with porcelain veneers are chipped
teeth; stained, discolored or yellowed teeth; gaps in teeth; the
shape of teeth or mildly crowded teeth.
A long-time Hollywood favorite, porcelain veneers can give a

cutting down of the teeth and anesthetic.
“What has revolutionized veneers,” explains Dr. Martin, “is the
development in the last twenty years of a porcelain that is strong
enough to be cut into contact lens-thin facings and still be durable,
and have that natural, translucent look of teeth.”
With the new extra-thin veneers, not only can veneers be placed
without any preparation or anesthetic, they are also completely
reversible.
