Recommended Use
Bar Chart
Used to examine one or more measures (such as sales and costs) over a
grouping (such as region or quarter)

Used to examine a grouping's proportions (such as the percentage of sales that

Line Chart
Used to examine trends of one or more measures, such as quarterly revenues

looking for possible relationships between the geographical entities (like flight
delays between cities). Use color, size, shape to show 3 metrics. Add cross
node links to show flows and / or relationships. Comes with geocodes.
Data Sheet
Like a spread sheet. Used to examine the underlying raw data and for visually
correlating across multiple measures (for example, does a discount increase as
the transaction amount increases). Right click to export selected data.

Used to examine how two measures relate (for example, which investments
provide a favorable date of return at a low risk)

Heat Map
Used to locate “hot spots” within the cross-product of two groupings (such as
high margin but low volume products within certain regions). Excellent for
viewing portfolios.
Parabox
Used to examine how multiple metrics and/or multiple groupings relate (for
example, how do the offensive statistics of a sports league's highest-paid player
compare to the lowest-paid players, and where within the league are these
players). Displays box plots of mean, 25-75%, and 5–95% distribution of each
displayed metric. Updates upon selection to show the selected population vs.
the whole population across all metrics.
Time Table
Used to examine events over time at a granular level (for example, server alarms
for network intrusion detection; transactions by POS terminal grouped by
stores).
