Past Perfect Past Perfect Continuous 1. The Past Perfect. FORM I / You / He / She / It / We / You / They HAD + PAST PARTICIPLE USE 1. We use the Past Perfect to talk about actions that happened BEFORE other actions in the past. 2. A habit. 3. A permanent job. 4. Verbs expressing a feeling or verbs expressing a state . The Past Perfect Continuous. FORM I / You / He / She / It / We / You / They HAD BEEN + ING-FORM USE We use the Past Perfect Continuous to talk about actions that had been happening BEFORE other actions in the past. We put the STRESS ON THE DURATION of the actions. Examples for the use of the Past Perfect Continuous: - The police had been interrogating the other guests for two hours. They had been waiting for him for fifteen minutes before they decided to leave. They had been shopping all afternoon. He hadn't been smoking since last month but he relapsed.
