BUILDING WHAT MATTERS GALA
A LASTING LEGACY-A NEW ERA
The past year has been a time of transition and transformation for the Westport Weston Family YMCA.
On Oct. 6, 2014, we opened the doors of our beautiful new facility, the Bedford Family Center, on our
Mahackeno campus. Months before, on June 11, we celebrated the opening of our YMCA Gymnastics
Center in Norwalk, our Y’s first off-site facility.
The hard work of so many dedicated volunteers, members and staff has ushered in a new era for our
YMCA and the communities we serve. Our talented young gymnasts are thriving in their modern new
home, which has also become a warm and welcoming place for many other Y members and guests,
especially new families drawn to inclusive YMCA programs like the daily Toddler Adventure Open Gym.
We’re so pleased that our new YMCA facility on Allen Raymond Lane has been embraced by our long-time
members as well as new friends and neighbors, in ever-growing numbers. More gratifying is the fact that
many of these new members and visitors are those we are able to serve for the first time — seniors with
mobility issues; mothers with strollers; families whose children have special needs.
We owe a lasting debt of gratitude to so many for helping achieve our long-held dream of Building What
Matters.
To Rob Reeves, we thank you for your six years of service as CEO and wish you Godspeed in your
retirement following a 30-year YMCA career filled with achievement;
To Philip Dwyer, our interim CEO over the past eight months, we will miss your expert guidance and
good humor, and we thank you for the lasting impact you have made on our Y in such a short time.
And to Patricia Riemersma, we say “Hello!” and welcome you to our Y family. May your tenure as Chief
Executive Officer be rewarding and productive as you help lead our YMCA in continuing to fulfill its
charitable mission to develop youth, promote healthy living and foster social responsibility.
This new era begins not only with new leadership and new facilities, but also with the incredibly generous
endowment of $40 million from the estate of Ruth Bedford, YMCA Trustee Emeritus and granddaughter
of Y founder Edward T. Bedford. We are truly blessed - and humbled by the trust that the Bedford family
continues to place in our YMCA to be good stewards of this long-term financial support.
As we begin our 92nd year of service to all who live and work in our communities, we especially extend
our gratitude to the members, volunteer leaders and supporters who share the Bedford family’s faith in
our YMCA as a center of community life, wellness and fellowship – today, over the coming year, and for
generations to come.

HELPING US MEET COMMUNITY NEEDS
Contributors to the Annual Campaign, through December 31, 2014
To ensure access for all who want to participate in programs, camps, classes and activities, the Family YMCA, a charitable nonprofit organization with
a 501(c) 3 tax status, provides financial assistance to individuals and families unable to afford membership or program fees. And we collaborate with
social services organizations in the area to extend the benefits of Family YMCA membership and programming to all segments of the community.
Not all of our costs are covered by membership and program fees, so through our Annual Campaign we rely on the generosity of our members and
supporters to help us to fulfill our obligations in the community. With the support of those listed below, our Family YMCA made the following impacts
on lives in 2014:
Family YMCA Members Who Received Financial Assistance or Scholarship Aid in 2014 Direct Financial Assistance and Subsidies
Community Outreach Programs and Indirect Support of Nonprofit Partners
2014 Total Community Support

Gymnastics Director Sally Silverstein expresses her thanks to the many YMCA members and
supporters, especially the YMCA Gymnastics families and friends, for contributing to the campaign
to fund the creation of the Gymnastics Program’s wonderful new home.
And we all wish the best of luck and safe travels to the 25 members of our Family YMCA’s acclaimed
Showtime Exhibition Gymnastics Team, who will fly will fly to Helsinki, Finland, to participate in the
15th World Gymnaestrada, the largest gymnastic event in the world. They will be accompanied by

IN MEMORIAM 2014
ALLEN A. RAYMOND
Admired and respected by all who were privileged to know him,
“Mr. Westport” passed away, peacefully, at his Westport home on
May 1, 2014 at the age of 91. Allen Raymond was born in Buffalo,
N.Y., in 1923, and as a child spent summers at his family’s vacation
home on Compo Cove before moving full-time to Westport in 1949,
where he and his wife, Barbara, raised their family of five children.
Over the next 60 years, Allen, a successful executive in the
publishing industry, devoted countless hours to the betterment of
our community, serving in leadership positions with the Westport
Library, the Westport Historical Society, Earthplace, the Norwalk
Symphony, the Westport Republican Party and the Family YMCA,
among other local organizations touched by his time and talent.
Allen was the youngest President of the Westport YMCA Board
of Directors, leading the Y from 1962-64. He remained a vital
presence at the Family YMCA for the remainder of a long,
productive life. Named a Y Trustee Emeritus in 2011, Allen was
instrumental in spearheading the campaign to build our new Y
facility. In 2013 we were honored to name the entrance road
leading to our new Y, Allen Raymond Lane, in lasting gratitude and
appreciation.
LUCIE C. McKINNEY
Lucie C. McKinney, the greatgranddaughter of Y Founder
Edward T. Bedford, passed away
on May 10, 2014. She was 80
years old. She was the daughter
of Lucie Bedford Cunningham
Warren and Briggs Cunningham
and widow of U.S. Congressman
Stewart McKinney. A soft-spoken,
unpretentious woman with a
love of animals and ladybugs,
Lucie followed her family’s great
tradition of philanthropy and
civic involvement, generously
supporting our Y and other local
causes throughout her life. She is
the mother of five, including John
McKinney and Libby McKinney
Tritschler, both of whom serve
on the Y’s volunteer governing
boards.

RUTH BEDFORD
Ruth Bedford, the last surviving grandchild of Edward T. Bedford, died June 14, 2014, at the age of 99.
A lifelong supporter of the Y, Ruth was a Y Trustee for many years. Along with her older sister, Lucie Bedford Cunningham
Warren, Ruth was instrumental in leading the campaign to expand the Y’s original downtown facility, generously funding
the conversion of the Central Firehouse into the Y’s Fitness Center in the 1980s. Over the years, Ruth made numerous
contributions to the YMCA’s Endowment and Annual Campaign, which allows our Y to make programs and services
available to local individuals and families in need.
In April 2015, the Family YMCA announced an amazingly generous bequest from the estate: A $40 million gift that will be
used to endow our Y for generations to come.
“She was brought up with the idea that you don’t need more money than you need to live on, and you have a responsibility
to give back,” said her great-niece, Libby McKinney Tritschler, herself a member of the Y’s Board of Directors.
“Ruth Bedford’s family has been indispensable to the YMCA for more than eight decades. We are determined to make
the family proud of how we will use this generous bequest,” said Pete Wolgast, Chairman of the Family YMCA’s Board of
Trustees, which oversees the organization’s investments and endowments.
“We will strive to increasingly to quicken the public sense of civic duty …
We will transmit this town greater, better and more beautiful
than it was transmitted to us.”
– Inscription on “Torch” mural by James Dougherty, to be displayed in the Bedford Family Center Lobby.
The mural was donated by Ruth’s father, Frederick, and restored with funds provided by the Bedford Family.
