SPANISH FOR EDUCATORS
BUENAVISTA, MEXICO
PROGRAMS START EVERY MONDAY
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Our intensive Spanish for Educators program in Buenavista, Mexico combines the
regula Spanish immersion program with specific Spanish and cultural training for
educators. This is a great way to learn both general and specialized Spanish.
Educators at all levels benefit from this immersion experience.
CITY AND COUNTRY INFO
Buenavista de Cuellar is a village located about an hour's drive from Cuernavaca. It is
a charming small town, reflecting the serenity of decades past, with adobe walls and
tiled roofs and a population of 9,000 people, nestled in an agricultural valley, just over
the state line in the neighboring state of Guerrero.
Buenavista is a relatively prosperous community, with cattle raising and production of byproducts (cheese, milk,
leather products) of this as primary sources of income. Many of the village's residents live and work in the United
States during agricultural production periods and return to their homes for holidays or seasonal work. While this
is not a primary focus for the school, many students who have studied in Buenavista have found that their stay in
the village provided insight into the lives and concerns of the large migrant population, giving them a new
perspective not frequently recognized or appreciated in the United States. In addition, talking with members of
the family who have been "left behind" enables students who have interest in these areas to develop a more
complete view of the social, economic, and personal lives of the people who have been forced to choose this
way of life and work.
HIGHLIGHTS OF PROGRAM
In this Spanish for Educators program, students will improve their communicative ability in both speaking and
listening. They will discuss different methods of teaching with the instructors and the other students in the
program, review grammar and other technical aspects of the language, and broaden their understanding of the
culture and region of Buenavista.

ACTIVITIES AND
EXCURSIONS
LODGING OPTIONS
HOMESTAY
A family stay is an integral part of our program, not only for the
hospitality students enjoy, but as an additional first-hand way to
experience the culture of Mesoamerica. Families are carefully
selected and supervised. All homes are within easy walking or
public transportation distance of the school facility. The family
housing program includes three meals per day.
The relationships between the school and the families are longstanding ones, and this dynamic of support and understanding is
critical to the success of this important component of the family
housing program. Many families have been providing care for
students since the school began, but as the school has grown (and
families have grown older), many new families have entered the
program.
Many families are within walking distance of the schools, and
others are on an easy-to-master bus system, at a cost of about
thirty cents per ride. Homes are assigned on a first come, first
served basis, and students are encouraged to register early.
All activities are organized by the
local coordinator and may include:
•
•
•
•
Arts and Crafts
Cooking
Horseback riding
Folk dancing
