Biannual News from Good Samaritan Hospital
Biannual News from Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation • Spring 2014
A family of givers
Dear Foundation Family:
Every issue of Compassionate Giving keeps you updated on the news and good work of our
Foundation Family. This Spring issue is no exception. We’ve packed it with plenty of photos
and stories, including those taken at February’s Gala hosted by The Good Samaritans. As
usual, the Gala was so much fun, but only after months of behind-the scenes planning and
hard work. We are grateful to all of you photographed here, and to the hundreds of others
that made the evening so much fun for such great causes.
Turn the pages of this issue and you’ll see – we are a generous group that likes to have a
good time! We also are a family of givers, ready to give our time, money and energy to fuel
the mission of Good Samaritan Hospital.
Beginning on page 11 you’ll find the names of dozens of extra-special family members –
individuals, corporations, foundations and organizations – who have demonstrated a habit
of exceptional generosity. These Lifetime Giving Society members have each, to date,
donated $10,000 or more to ensure our patients receive quality, compassionate care.
Some have donated more than $1 million. I have a feeling this kindness will continue –
generosity is a deeply engrained habit!
To every member of the Foundation family, you have my heartfelt thanks. It is a privilege
to be counted among you.

PHYLLIS ADAMS is no stranger to Good Sam. Not only did she deliver both daughters here, “because of the reputation of the neonatal
unit,” in 2009 she helped establish Good Sam’s office of the Healthnetwork Foundation in partnership with other local and national
hospitals. Her vast experience in technology as the now-retired founder and CEO of Professional Data Resources, Inc. led Good Sam
leadership to ask Phyllis to assist a South African charity with a patient tracking system. Impressed with Good Sam’s “collaborative culture
and commitment to health care regionally, nationally and internationally,” Phyllis looks forward to contributing as a Board member
“in any way I can.”
LEON LOEWENSTINE has been managing investment assets for non-profits for more than 30 years and has served on many non-profit
Boards. Since 2002 he has worked for RiverPoint Capital Management and currently is their Managing Director and Chief Investment
Strategist. Cincinnati Magazine routinely names Leon a Five-Star Wealth Manager. He is eager to help make a difference on the Board and
the Finance Committee. “My father was a patient at Good Sam last year and I was able to witness firsthand the outstanding care the
physicians and staff provided. I hope my involvement will make a small difference in someone else's life.”
JODI LOWER MAHON has vast business experience in the U.S. and abroad. She held important positions at Andersen Consulting (now
Accenture) and Kraft General Foods before joining General Cable Corporation where, as vice president, she focused on General Cable’s
business development in the U.S. and Europe. Throughout her career she has learned “that diverse perspectives in a collaborative form can
generate awesome ideas – and advances,” and is eager to help introduce new ideas as a member of the Foundation Board. Her consulting
company JLM Diversified helps small businesses with recruiting, performance appraisals and organizational design.
A “Good Sam baby,” DAN NEYER is President and CEO of Neyer Properties and other real estate companies that provide land development,
acquisition investment, construction, design financing, leasing and property management. As a lifelong Cincinnatian, he says “being part
of the board is a way to give back to the community where I was raised and have received significant blessings.” Having been touched
closely by cancer – wife Kris and daughter Amanda both are cancer survivors – Dan hopes to contribute to the Foundation “by helping out
where I can from a leadership and financial standpoint.”
A busy trial attorney for 30-plus years, CANDI TAGGART is Partner at Porter Wright Morris & Arthur LLP, and is eager to serve as a Board
Member for the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation. “Being on the board gives me an opportunity to encourage others to support Good
Sam’s cancer care services,” she says, a special passion that stems from the death of her son Andy Caress to melanoma at age 24. “I’m excited
about the development of Good Sam’s new Cancer Institute with its focus on compassionate care.” Candi also is an enthusiastic advocate for
accessible health care for people of limited financial means. “I look forward to inviting others in the community to support Good Sam’s Free
Health Center.”

ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE
“ for life, good health, and the reassurance
that things would be OK ”
As TriHealth’s Senior Vice President of Hospital Operations, John R. Robinson MD
has always been aware of the quality, compassionate care that Good Sam provides
patients. But after a serious cancer scare in 2008, he and his wife Sue experienced
Good Samaritan from the other side of the bed, and “I saw from a personal place
all that this hospital provides our patients,” John says. Throughout his cancer
journey, and during treatment that other family members have received at Good
Sam over the years, the pair have come to love Good Samaritan and TriHealth not
just as an employer but, as John describes, “a place that has provided life, good
health, and the reassurance that things would be OK in spite of our fears.”
Their shared experiences have placed them in hospital units, and among staff,
Dr. and Mrs. John R. Robinson
on nearly every floor of the campus. They quickly can list more than a dozen areas
in which they’ve spent time as patients, or family members of patients, over the
last decade. From the Operating Room to the ICU to the Chapel, their experiences have only deepened their
appreciation for a place that has delivered physical, emotional and spiritual care.“Our children will never forget
how well they were treated and supported while visiting here,” they believe.
Before John reached the five-year milestone as a cancer survivor last Fall, Sue says they both worried whether
he would ever see their first grandchild born, or walk his daughter down the aisle. Today John is thrilled to
have experienced both; their second grandson arrived in January and their older daughter was married last
December. “From a gratitude standpoint I don’t know how to be more grateful,” Sue says of the Endowment
they’ve established with the Foundation. In addition, the couple has earmarked a portion of their estate to
the Foundation.
Yet they realize that not everyone is as fortunate. That’s why the Robinsons also routinely donate to Good Sam’s
Cancer Care Fund, which supports needy cancer patients with money for cab fare, bus tokens, and other hardships.“Being treated for cancer can make you so sick,” Sue remembers of John’s experience. “To have to worry
about paying for a cab to the hospital, or how to pay your utility bills at a time like that…it’s just so sad what
some people go through.”
If you’d like to express your
gratitude with a donation to
the Good Samaritan Hospital
Foundation, please contact
John says he has learned,“You can make a difference with any amount of money,” adding that, “The people
who are most inspiring to me are those who don’t have a whole lot, but give what they can.” During his cancer
journey John was especially touched by friends who showed their gratitude to the hospital staff by making
donations. “It was so special to me that people wanted to give back in little or big ways by making a donation
to the Foundation.”

As the hospital’s

Good Samaritan
Hospital Foundation is
charged with raising the
funds to carry out this
responsibility. To crystalize
our plans, the Foundation
staff has developed a
Community Care Initiative.
It establishes these
philanthropic priorities
through 2015:
OUR CANCER

Providing these patients with the best care available – physically and emotionally

MINISTRY
COMPREHENSIVE CARE
In this issue of
Compassionate Giving,
we focus on our
responsibility to provide
Comprehensive Care to the
1,200+ cancer patients who
seek treatment at Good
Samaritan each year.
And we ask you, our
generous readers, to share
this responsibility through
your support.
“EVERY CANCER PATIENT DESERVES TO BE THE CENTER OF ATTENTION
AND SURROUNDED BY A TEAM OF ExPERTS.”
THE NEW CANCER CENTER IS SCHEDULED TO OPEN IN MAY OF 2014.
YOU CAN EASE THE
CANCER JOURNEY
AND IMPROVE OUTCOMES
With significant donor support, we know this dream of a comprehensive journey to cancer survival can be a
reality for the thousands of people in our community who will learn they have cancer this year. You can ease
their cancer journey by making a donation to the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation (see below).
Naming opportunities are available for our most generous donors.
Your donation will help realize the dream of TriHealth cancer experts – to provide each cancer patient with the best care available.

THE GOOD SAMARITANS OF GOOD SAMARITAN HOSPITAL FOUNDATION 30TH ANNUAL GALA
EVENT STIRS UP MORE THAN $531,000 TO
SUPPORT BREAST CANCER – AN ALL TIME RECORD!
The Good Samaritans’ 30th Annual Gala – After Thirty Years...Let’s Roll Dice and Stir Things Up! –
raised more than $531,000 to benefit the development of a comprehensive Breast Cancer
Program at Good Samaritan Hospital and an annual donation to the Medical Education
Research Fund. This amount is an all time record for this annual fundraising event.
More than 760 supporters of Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation gathered at the Horseshoe
Casino, Cincinnati, in the Pavilion Ballroom, where guests were treated to a cocktail reception
followed by a gourmet dinner. After dinner, guests danced the night away to the music of Jayne
Bond and the Pink Martinis. The event was an explosion of pink with flashing necklaces and
rings, blinking noodle hair, princess wands and beads, giant martini glass centerpieces, circus
performers, balloon hats, green screen photography and a martini bar.
Good Samaritan Hospital Medical and Dental staff generously underwrote the Entertainment
and Room Décor, Mrs. Claire B. Phillips underwrote the Dinner Entrée and Hatton Foundation
underwrote the Cocktail Hour. Other corporate sponsors included: AK Steel Corporation, Fifth
Third Bank, Group Health, Macy’s, Phillips Supply Co., SC Ministry Foundation, Sisters of Charity,
and TriHealth, Inc. These substantial underwriting and sponsorship donations had a considerable impact on the fundraising efforts for this annual event.
The Good Samaritans is a dedicated volunteer organization of Good Samaritan Hospital
Foundation and includes members with ties to the medical and business community. The
Good Samaritans have raised more than $6 million in their history. This year’s Gala Chairman
was Pamela Rossmann and her Co-Chairman was Patty Bassano. They worked diligently with
other Gala committee volunteers and with physician champion Jose Barreau, MD.

GOOD SAMARITAN HOSPITAL FOUNDATION
EMPLOYEE CAMPAIGN
Rather than choosing a project and conducting another campaign for the
sake of having a campaign, this year we created something that could be
ongoing/more meaningful. Something that truly has purpose and creates
impact. . . thus I AM Good Sam was born.
I AM Good Sam is about sustaining a legacy handed down to us more than 160
years ago. It is about employees truly understanding and believing in our roles
and responsibilities as Good Sam employees. It is our legacy of serving the
community, the poor, our patients and their families as well as each other.
“I AM Good Sam” is the conduit or avenue that allows employees to actively do
something by aligning their values with the area they choose to support.
Employee donations will help to improve the quality of patient care in the area
of choice or boost a member of our Good Samaritan family who needs a
helping hand.
For more information about I AM Good Sam or to donate, contact
Kelly Rowland at 513-862-3787 or [email protected].
Offering a hand to hold...giving a reassuring smile...
going an extra step...sharing an encouraging word.
SIMPLE GESTURES OF KINDNESS OFTEN MEAN THE MOST TO US.
Through the Spirit of Compassion program at Good Samaritan Hospital, patients and /or
family members can make a donation in honor of a physician, nurse, or staff member who
has made a difference and share a brief note of thanks. The Foundation will deliver the note
and recognize the caregiver with a Spirit of Compassion gift. The money is used to make
improvements that will ensure quality, compassionate care in the future.
For more information about the Spirit of Compassion program or how to honor a
healthcare worker, please call Sister Lynn Heper, SC at 513-862-1356.
“Every member of the Staff is unforgettable
in the way in which they ministered to me with
skill, kindness and compassion.”
Compassion is shown in many ways.
These are just a few of the wonderful
tributes that we have received:
“My husband’s nurse understood the true value
of Nursing which brings compassion and human
comfort to what is often a mechanical environment.”
