Dear Colleagues:
I am delighted to introduce to you the upcoming Ph.D. graduates of the Columbia School
of Social Work.
Since its inception in 1950, our doctoral program has provided its graduates with a
timely, rigorous educational program of study and research in an unparalleled learning
environment. The program’s mission has consistently been to train scholars capable of
initiating and carrying out the most innovative research and scholarship. Our faculty are
among the most innovative and productive scholars in the country, with research projects
that present students with opportunities to immediately engage in cutting edge research.
The students graduating this year specialize in a broad range of important topics
including child and family wellbeing, immigration and international social welfare,
adolescents involved in the criminal justice system, and intimate partner- and genderbased violence. What they have in common is rigorous training in academic scholarship
and teaching.

RESEARCH PROGRAM
My research focuses on adolescent resilience. This program of research examines
methods of engaging future orientation and identity beliefs to strengthen selfregulation, increase engagement in social services, and promote positive outcomes
in adolescents involved in criminal justice systems.

Leading a team of graduate and undergraduate research assistants in a grounded theory study
exploring the process of how future-oriented self-concepts (possible selves) lead to behavioral
action for adolescents who are court ordered to probation.
Spring 2015 Research Consultant. Raising Voices. Kampala, Uganda Conducted literature review concerning
school-related violence against children.
2010–2014 Graduate Research Assistant. Community-Family Integration Teams (C-FIT) Project. Columbia

Community-Family Integration Teams (C-FIT) is a UNICEF-funded project aimed at improving
Ministry capacity to meet the needs of children in institutional care, and the development and
testing the region’s first formal therapeutic foster care and community-based diversion programs to
provide alternatives to institutional care.
2013–2014 Research and Programming Consultant. Inwood House. New York, NY
A project to develop and pilot test an intervention based on possible selves theory to promote
positive outcomes and engagement with services for pregnant and parenting girls in residential
foster care.
Spring 2014Research Consultant. Raising Voices. Kampala, Uganda
Conducted a baseline evaluation of knowledge, attitudes, skills, and behaviors concerning violence
again women among activist organizations in Africa.
2013–2014 Research Consultant. Trócaire Irish Aid. Kampala, Uganda
An evaluation of the knowledge, attitudes, skills, and behaviors concerning women, violence,
power, and activism of priests, catechists, and laypersons in Uganda.

Managed a team of five research assistants in recruiting and interviewing youth and their families
as part of a longitudinal study to examine relationship processes between probation officers and
youths who are court ordered to probation to identify patterns associated with higher levels of
youth participation and cooperation.

Led a team of four Jordanian interns in conducting a community-based survey (n=320) using
experimental vignettes to examine public stigma toward alternatives to detention for juveniles,
foster care, and mental health treatment in Amman, Jordan.

An exploratory study on families choosing to homeschool their children using ethnographic
observation, qualitative interviews, and document review.
2008–2010 Research Associate.Vera Institute of Justice. New York, NY
Comprehensive Transition Planning Program, Program on Substance Use and Mental Health.
Evaluated enhanced reentry planning program at Rikers Island, conducted mixed method
interviews with incarcerated individuals on the topic of re-entry needs, emotional well-being,
substance use & attitudes toward an enhanced reentry planning program.
Women’s Life Course Pilot Study: Pathways of Incarcerated Women with Mental Illness, Program
on Substance Use and Mental Health.
Developed and conducted a mixed methods pilot study exploring detailed life histories (e.g.
substance use, criminal history, mental health history, and trauma experiences) of women at risk of
criminal justice involvement with a mental health diagnoses.
The Animation Project (TAP), Program on Child Welfare, Health, and Justice
Provided program development assistance to TAP, including an evaluability assessment, design
recommendations for formative and summative evaluations, developing a program logic model,
and a comprehensive best practice and technology with at-risk adolescents.
Child Protective Services Practice Core Evaluation, Program on Child Welfare, Health, and Justice
Facilitated focus groups and administered group surveys as part of an evaluation of the training
curriculum for new child protection specialists.
Program on Prosecution and Racial Justice
Conducted research examining the presence of patterns of racial disparity at county-level district
attorney offices; designed an early warning system for district attorneys to identify potential racial
disparity during the prosecutorial process.

A study developing international indicators for assessing the rule of law; conducted opinion
surveys about police and courts in New York City neighborhoods and observed police precincts;
