FREESTANDING KORU
Fashioned out of Silica sand from Mount Somers in
mid-Canterbury, these appealing Koru forms are
made by melting silica sand and mixing with other
minerals to form molten glass. Colour is added and
then manipulated to create the Koru forms in vibrant
translucent shades of blue and green.

Dichroic Glass contains multiple micro-layers of
metal oxides which give the glass dichroic optical
properties. Dichroic glass dates back to at least
the 4th century AD as seen in the Lycurgus cup.
Multiple ultra-thin layers of different metals (gold,
silver), metal oxides (titanium, chromium,
aluminium, zirconium, magnesium) and silica are
vaporised. The finished glass can have as many as
30 to 50 layers of these materials yet the thickness
of the total coating is approximately 30to 35
millionths of an inch. The coating that is created is
very similar to a gemstone and by careful control of
thickness, different colours are obtained.

"I love working with hot glass. It is a challenge to
wrestle an object of beauty from a barely
controlled mass of molten glass. When we work
with hot glass we often heat works to a
temperature where we are barely able to control
them, as they cool we are able to coax them into
forms both beautiful and expressive. It takes much
skill and training to bring forth beautiful glass from
barely controlled chaos, flame, steam and smoke.

GLASS PAUA BOWLS
These artistically hand crafted bowls capture the
beauty of our internationally known beautiful Paua
shells.
PAUA is a shellfish indigenous to the South Pacific
waters surrounding New Zealand. As a unique type of
abalone, paua has become a “taonga” (treasure) to
the New Zealand people and the shells are often used
for decorative effect. The shell has an iridescent bluegreen interior and is widely used for jewelry and
ornaments. It is found in rock crevices at extreme low
tide.
The Maori people have had a long tradition of
gathering paua for its nutritional and aesthetic
qualities.

concept of hot river stones that are heated in the Maori
cooking pit called the Hangi.
The process of creating the form involves the blowing
of the base of the vase and layering coloured glass
onto

layer formation.

AROHA BOTTLE
The design within this piece comes from love. The
interior bubble symbolizes the heart with the white
trail being the basket which carries it along its
journey. This vase has a very solid look and feel to it;
it's a process of layering cooling and encasing. I
hope you enjoy this piece as much as I did creating
it.

AROHA FLATTENED VESSELS
Glass is an inviting, amazing medium both in its hot
molten liquid state and its cooled final form. My
inspiration comes from nature’s surrounding and
what I’ve seen and found on my journeys around
the world. Glass gives me an outlet to express my
thoughts and ideas in a physical form.
The technical process involved in making these
forms starts with a furnace of molten glass, which
runs 24 hours a day at 1100 degrees. Tools used are
a blowing pipe, wet newspaper, jacks, a punty and
my brilliant team at Chronicle Glass.

WHIRL PLATTER
I enjoy making the whip whirl platter that starts as
an enclosed vessel. With heat and centrifugal force
I spin it out to make a platter; the fluidity is
enhanced by the addition of the trails. These
platters evolved from my water lily series; they have
a sense of movement that happens in the final
heating process.

background, a further development has

New Zealand’s National Symbol – The Silver Fern
The silver fern is becoming increasingly recognized
overseas as the national symbol of New Zealand.
It was originally adopted by the New Zealand Native
Rugby Team which visited England in 1888 and has since
formed part of the uniform (or badge) of successive
representative sporting teams. From the early 1900s, the
fern leaf has been used as a trademark for meat and
dairy exports.

RECTANGLE SILVER FERN PLATE
On 18 May 1908, to mark the attainment of Dominion status, the
Secretary of State for Colonies approved the New Zealand
Government's proposal to substitute a wreath of fern leaves for
the laurel wreath on the Governor's Ensign. This usage, also,
continued until about 1935. The fern leaf has been used as a
distinguishing badge for New Zealand military formations,
particularly during the Second World War, and was also used to
mark the graves of New Zealand servicemen in overseas
countries. In the most recent revision (1963) of the New Zealand
Coat of Arms, two fern leaves provide a base for the supporters to
stand upon.
