Every Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project (CWP) that I have worked is unique, and in
2013, New York City was no different. There were two worksites, one in Queens and one
in Staten Island. I was a Co-House Lead in New Dorp Beach on Staten Island. The CWP
concentrated on rehabilitation of homes damaged during Hurricane Sandy on October 22,
2012. The homes in New Dorp Beach were all in a four-square-block area. We had a central
meeting place where we met volunteers in the morning and had lunch every day.

The house I worked on faced
the beach, which was only
200 yards away. According
to our homeowner, there
was 13 feet of water at the
street in front of his house
at the height of the storm.
You can imagine the amount
of damage that can do to
homes. Most of the homes
had been gutted by New York
City Habitat for Humanity or
by the homeowners. We were
there to install insulation,
sheetrock, flooring and paint.
This is a photo, a few days after the storm, of the home that I helped
rehabilitate in New Dorp Beach, Staten Island.
My Co-House Leader, Miranda Calhoun,
and I faced a new group of volunteers
every day of the build, with two groups
on Thursday. Once people were trained
on hanging sheetrock, they would leave
and we would start our training over the
next day. We did have one volunteer
with us the entire week, Alyce
Matsumoto. She lives in Manhattan
and was a cleaning machine. She kept
the worksite spotless inside and out.

Our homeowner, Rudy Meinert, is a sergeant with the NYPD. He works nights in the 5th
Precinct (Chinatown – Manhattan), and yes, he had plenty of cop stories to tell. He arrived
home every day from work around 8:00 a.m. and worked with us all day until 4:00 p.m. He
bought his house seven years ago and plans to live there the rest of his life. Rudy lived in a
trailer in front of his house for seven months after the storm while getting a couple of rooms
livable. He could not believe the number of people that showed up to help him and the
amount of work that was done in a week. Of course, I wanted to do so much more than we
actually got done.

Habitat, which is almost exclusively reliant
upon the benevolent spirit of those who
care — of those who exemplify, as described
by Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs,
the top level of human advancement: Self
Actualization. Every week I see people give
their time and treasure to build homes which
transforms families and neighborhoods. But
there is so much more to do.
We are all so busy. Yet I pray that your
daily rush does not make you blind to
those in need — families, homes and
entire neighborhoods fighting for survival.
To this end, Trinity Habitat will soon
announce a new holistic neighborhood
transformation initiative. If you want

and help families achieve the American

Carter Work Project (CWP) Family Spotlight: Leandra Johnson
Meet Leandra Johnson – a hardworking, young mom with her precious
four-year-old son, Xavier.
Life is difficult for all single
moms, but when you earn a lowincome wage, it’s an even greater
struggle. Having enough money
for a safe and decent place to
live, healthy meals, childcare,
utilities and other critical needs
is a challenge to say the least.
Many family partners, like
Leandra, face these struggles every day – often for many years.
Fortunately for Leandra, she learned about the Habitat program from
her aunt, who is a current Trinity Habitat homeowner. In fact, several
years ago, Leandra volunteered a number of hours on her aunt’s home
build and helped her aunt obtain her required sweat equity hours.
Leandra soon realized that completing the Habitat program would be
the best way for her family to own a home too, especially since she

The fact that Leandra’s mortgage will be much lower than her current
rent was also an appealing factor. Leandra shared, “With an
affordable mortgage I will be able to save money and better my
financial situation instead of living paycheck to paycheck. I will be
able to give my son greater opportunities, and I’ll even be able enroll
him in T-ball because I’ll be able to afford it.”

• Living in an overcrowded apartment that is very old and in need of repairs, we came to Habitat because we wanted to give our
children more space, stability and a place
to call home.
• The Habitat program brings us great joy
because now our dream of obtaining a new
home is possible.
Leandra looked at various home sites across Fort Worth before
choosing her lot on Van Natta Lane, which is in the Central
Meadowbrook neighborhood of Fort Worth and is our affiliate’s site for
the 2014 Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project. Leandra loves the
neighborhood and is excited that her home build will be a part of this
historic Habitat for Humanity event. She’s ready to dive in and start
building her own Habitat home alongside President and Mrs. Carter
and thousands of volunteers during the week of Oct. 5-11.

From Burma to Fort Worth: The Road to Freedom and Transformation
Several of our CWP partner families are from Burma (Myanmar). They fled their birth
country to make a new home in the United States. As refugees from the Burmese
military junta and the torture and oppression they rein on anyone in opposition to the
government, these families found respite in Fort Worth. Many of the parents in these
families grew up with limited or no education, had little money, and lived in fear for
their well-being and their lives. Some of these families knew each other in Burma
and, by God’s design, found their way not only to Fort Worth and Trinity Habitat, but
also to being future neighbors in Central Meadowbrook – our Carter Work Project
neighborhood! While each family has its unique dreams, they all want safety, stability,
educational opportunities, and a home in which they and their children can thrive.

The Wills Family
• We have been renting a cramped apartment
for many years. The neighborhood has numerous
robberies and we don’t always feel safe. Our rent
and utilities have gone up every year.
• Before we came to the Habitat program, we never
thought that homeownership would be possible
due to financial factors. We did not have perfect
credit but Habitat worked with us.
• Owning a home will help us achieve the American
dream. It is such a blessing to own a home!
