Director’s Message
Scott Shoemaker, Sunset Zoo Director
[email protected]
2010 will be a groundbreaking year!
Sunset Zoo will break ground on both the new Zoo Education Center
and the Gibbon Exhibit this winter and early spring. You’ll find the
Gibbons’ new home constructed along the Asian Trail. It will include
elements from Brownie’s former exhibit and the former golden eagle
enclosure. Gibbons are an endangered species of monkey that are
known for their brachiating (swinging) and their elaborate vocalizations.
We will also introduce a Hoffmann’s two-toed sloth into the reed titi
monkey and Geoffroy’s marmoset exhibit. This multi-species exhibit will
be a unique addition to Sunset Zoo and will add opportunities to
observe these species interact.
You’ll also get to meet the new araucana chickens along the Trails of
South America. These unique chickens are not only beautiful, but they
lay green eggs! Look for the striking black and red pheasants, magpies,
and other new species throughout the Zoo this spring!
Our Education Department is crafting new programs and opportunities
for explorers of all ages. Be sure to plan ahead for Spring Break and
register your school-aged children for Piranha School early!
Wine in the Wild is scheduled for June 5 and the planning team is
working hard to continue to grow the event and to keep it fresh. Save
the date as this event is one you will not want to miss!
As always, we look forward to seeing You at the Zoo!

Curator’s Corner:
Giant News at Sunset Zoo
By Mark Ryan, General Curator, [email protected]
New Years’ Greetings!
Most people have just finished stuffing themselves full of
holiday turkey and are only feeling mildly guilty. At Sunset
Zoo, we are ramping up for the New Year! What better
way to start things off than with a present celebrating the
joy of the season? We are thrilled to announce that Sunset
Zoo’s giant anteaters, Angelica and Goober, are proud
parents once again!
Upon arrival at the Zoo on the morning of SPOOKtacular
Sunday, October 25, keeper staff were greeted with a new
baby giant anteater! By the time you are reading this, the
baby will be almost ten weeks old. What kind of baby it is
(male or female) we do not yet know except that it is definitely a giant anteater! Mom is pretty protective at this
point so even staff viewing is limited.
Speaking of giant anteaters, we all know they eat …Ants!
They are mammals, but do you know what makes them
unique among their peers in mammal world? Teeth! Giant
anteaters don’t have any teeth, yet they are still considered
carnivores. They use their two-foot long sticky tongue to slurp their ant-meal and then crush the insects
with hard growths found in their mouths and stomach. Anteaters’ tongues are connected to their sternum
(the bone that runs between the ribs) and can be extended and withdrawn up to 150 times a minute!
Anteaters measure up to seven feet long and are “Threatened” in their native South American home
range due to habitat loss, but even more recently due to “sport hunting.”
Curator Corner:
Not to overshadow other new arrivals, we recently acquired a second turkey vulture who can be seen
with the prairie dogs in the Kansas Plains exhibit. Swing by the Asian Trail to meet our
new male cinereous vulture, companion to Bondi, our long-admired female.
Cinereous vultures are endangered and are managed among Association of
Zoos & Aquarium institutions with a Species Survival Plan.
In December, we received a Hoffmann’s two-toed sloth. This is the only known
mammal to have green in its fur. How, you ask? The Hoffmann’s sloth is so
sedentary that algae forms on the hair follicles, giving it that GO GREEN look!
Finally, the Education Department has received a three- banded
armadillo which joins the outreach program collection. Book a Zoo Animal Program (ZAP) for
your group or school so you can see this armored wonder up close!
Curator’s Closing Caper: What kind of
topping does an anteater like on his
pizza? Ant-chovies!

Conservation Corner:
Asunción Zoo: It Took Only 15 Years!
By Bob Klemm, Ph.D., Director of Conservation & Research, [email protected]
On July 23, 2009, I left Manhattan for Paraguay with side trips to Saenz Pena, Formosa and Buenos Aires,
Argentina. That I arrived in Asunción three days later is another story but if any of you have flown….’nuf said?
While it sounds like an exotic vacation, all of these venues were associated with our sister zoo, Zoo
Asunción. As most of you know, we’ve been working with
the City of Asunción since 1994, consulting on organization,
renovation and animal husbandry improvements at Zoo
Asunción. This was a joint project of Conservation Action
Partnership (CAP) Paraguay, our Association of Zoos &
Aquariums (AZA) connection; Kansas-Paraguay/Comité
Paraguay Kansas Partners of the Americas and FOSZ,
which has funded our program from the start.
Unlike our annual visits of the past 15 years, this was one of
particular excitement owing to the fact that over the past 18
L to R: Bob Klemm, Mayor Evanhy Gallegos, Dr. Nelson Scappini,
months a new “operating group” has been working at Zoo
& Señora Marina Petrovic celebrate the Zoo Asunción’s progress
Asunción. As evidenced by photos and reports I was
receiving, the operating group was making fantastic progress at improving and upgrading the zoo both for the
public but most significantly for the animal collection. Actually, two individuals strongly supported by the
Mayor (Intendenta) of Asunción and the City Commission (Junta Municipal) took over supervision and
“support” of zoo operations. One, a friend of ours of long standing, Señora Marina Petrovic, brought her
foundation, Fundación Ricardo Boettner, in as “consultant/fundraiser/development resource/operational
torchbearer to work with another, a young 26-year old veterinarian, Nelson Scappini. Dr. Scappini was, in
sequence, Zoo Veterinarian, Zoo Director, and Director of the Botanical and Zoological Garden. Together,
these two individuals did what no one or no group had been able to do in 15 years. They began to transform
what was an unkempt, poorly administered, poorly constructed, and poorly supported group of cages and ugly
buildings, located in run-down but potentially beautiful grounds, into a pleasant zoo containing well-housed
animals who are the focus of universally accepted animal husbandry principles.
An example of an updated enclosure that features natural foliage and greater
range for the animals. This photo of a Zoo Asunción tortoise enclosure was taken
July 2009.
6
In 1994/1995, we had prepared a series of
reports which outlined the principles and
guidelines for improving the husbandry and
housing of the Zoo Asunción collection. The
reports lay unused and unreferenced for
many, many years. In some cases the
numerous successions of directors declared
such report and guides to be non-existent
until copies of them were presented to them
both from zoo files and files held in the City
Records! Three articles of these documents
were the most important: A Master Plan for
the Zoo (1995) an organizational chart for
zoo operation (1994) and a 28-page
“Manual for the Care and Housing of
Animals in Captivity” prepared specifically
translated in its entirety into Spanish (1996).

Clockwise from top: 1. Zoo Asunción’s new entrance, 2. old zoo entrance,
3. newly landscaped guest walkway replaces stone walkway abutting row of
small cages which have been removed, 4. old jaguar exhibit, 5. old stark jaguar
enclosure, 6. new jaguar exhibit with natural floor, grasses, and foliage
With dedication and the “go-ahead” from the mayor of Asunción, the team began resurrection of the zoo in
November 2008 and went back to basics using these documents, and the “new” Zoo Asunción was reborn. A
CAUTION….it takes time to effect a major change and there are still “exhibits” (using the term VERY loosely)
which need to be destroyed or renovated. Now, however, many of the animals are in clean, well maintained
exhibits; days-old food is no longer seen, fresh water is available, exhibit floors are natural (not concrete), and
enrichment and enrichment structures (climbing structures, “toys,” and exercise space) are available to occupy
the animals.
I could go on for many paragraphs praising and informing you of the “new zoo” in Paraguay, but the Editor
won’t let me take up the entire next five issues of the Insider. So, I’ve included some “before and after”
pictures to give you an idea of the tremendous change that has taken place recently. If you want to know
more, call me at Sunset Zoo, 785.587.2737, or go to these web sites: www.SunsetZoo.com or to ownerhttp://kansasparaguaypartners.wordpress.com/. The latter site provides a detailed accounting of the
Kansas-Paraguay Partners of the Americas Sunset Zoo/Asunción Zoo project.
Also, see the article in the next Insider describing Ms. Petrovic and Dr. Scappini visits to Kansas as the
byproduct of my visit to Paraguay and our invitation to them to see and learn from our Kansas zoos.

Sunset Zoo Celebrates Accreditation
Sunset Zoo applied for and earned industry accreditation this
year with the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA).
November 16, Jim Maddy, AZA President and CEO, traveled to
Manhattan to meet with Sunset Zoo staff and supporters and to
present the Zoo with its accreditation certificate.
Braving wind and a soaking rain, over 50 Zoo friends and
partners met at the Union Pacific Depot for a FOSZ-sponsored
reception for Maddy and the Zoo community.
Your participation in Friends of Sunset Zoo and as community
partners makes all of the difference. Thank you for your part in
Sunset Zoo’s AZA accreditation!
A Feast Among Friends
FOSZ Appreciation Party
With a fire in the Pavilion’s fireplace and
good company, the Friends of Sunset Zoo
hosted the fall FOSZ Appreciation Party,
November 15, 2009.
Several Friends braved the chilly rain for a
late autumn feast prepared by the FOSZ
board and special discounts in the Safari
Outpost Gift Shop. The latest Sunset Zoo
docent class joined the party as they completed their volunteer training.
It’s good to Walk Among Friends.
New Zoo Bottle Recycling Bins
Thank you Baskin Robbins, Vista Drive In, and
Streeter Enterprises for the new bottle-shaped
recycling bins at Sunset Zoo!
Look for them by the ticket booth, in the
Pavilion, and at La Cocina Concession Stand
during your next visit to the Zoo.

Watching Them Grow
By Al Henry, Friends of Sunset Zoo Member & Photographer
So here I am, staring past my reflection again, looking at two of
nature’s wonders: Sunset Zoo’s snow leopard cubs. Watching them
grow, especially as they are so active, is just another reason why I
believe there is a higher being in the universe. The cubs
are entertaining and they leave you in awe - all in the very
same moment.
Since I first saw the snow leopard cubs in August, I
sensed that they were important. Watching them grow up,
I know for sure that they are important! Though I didn’t see
them open their eyes for the first time, nor take their first
steps, nor leap for the first time, I have seen them develop
into two cool cubs that think they are pretty tough. I’ve
watched them grow, and “cute” and “never-ending stalking” best describes their behavior. They seem to get that
never-ending stalking from their dad, Nanda. The stalking
is what makes me enjoy the little male, Balek, the most.
He manages to still be cute with his small furry face, his
ears laid back, and eyes glaring, trying to be so intimidating.
Kabita, the female cub, has been fearlessly climbing and jumping from
the start! The only problem is that she climbs to places where she has
not yet been - almost to prove a point to her mom. Then the gravity of
her position sinks in and with no plan for coming back down, she cries
to her fast - acting mom, Tanya, for rescue. Tanya is a good mom.
She always looks out for her cubs and at times, seeks them out to
play. Watching the cubs sneak up on their mom is quite entertaining,
especially when Tanya jumps three feet in the air when the cubs
“attack.”
Nothing brings a smile faster than when the Kabita and Balek stand up
on the viewing glass. They will interact with you “face-to-face” or rub
their faces against the glass where your hand rests. It’s hard not to
laugh when they jump in “attack mode” and find the glass instead of
you...or to see their eyes as they time a jump wrong and end up short!
Watching them play in the pool; to see the little male try to pin his
sister while she growls...hmmm, isn’t that like most siblings in life?
The snow leopard cubs are well treated at Sunset Zoo- well known for
animals to live well past their life expectancies.
These cubs are something to behold. When they are playing, they will
run the fence with you. They will make your day better if you give
them the chance. They are half grown now, but still cubs, so if you
have not seen them yet, make the trip to the Sunset Zoo soon.
You’ll be glad you did.

Local Reviews of Wild Music
“Where The Wild Things Are” Soundtrack, Various Artists
Reviewers: Leah & Sarah Cunnick, Sisters of Sound in Aggieville
If music were a time machine, then the “Where the Wild Things Are”
soundtrack would transport you to two wonderful places. The music on
this cd first takes you back to the story of Max and the Wild Things. But
then, you find yourself returning to a care-free time in your own life; when
you were young and full of energy.
Things were simple; you wanted to go out, play, jump, make - up songs,
run around until the streetlights came on, and then head home for supper.
Karen O., lead singer of the band, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, combines
uncomplicated lyrics with some not-so-complex music to create just such a
musically-rich time machine. “Where the Wild Things Are” is crafted with
simple guitar chords, pianos, drums, clapping, lyrics full of kids’ truisms,
and a chorus of voices that sound like your 4th grade
classroom.
Your time travel includes truths like the unconditional love of family.
We would highly recommend this soundtrack to adults and children alike. And if you really
like this type of music and lyrics, one may want to check out artists like Kimya Dawson and
Daniel Johnston.
Snapshots of the JZK Road Trip
By Jessie Roberts, Animal Keeper 1, [email protected]
The 2009 Junior ZooKeeper (JZK) trip was one of my last events as
a Sunset Zoo Education employee, because right after that I
became a relief ZooKeeper. We spent a lot of time on the road
during the trip, but those kids could have fun anywhere! With only
one boy, we thought he would get lonely with all of the girls. We
were wrong. I believe he had the most fun; after a few hours all of
the girls wanted to be his friend. We visited botanical gardens,
enjoyed a boat tour through Oklahoma City, and of course, visited
two other zoological parks! At the Sedgwick County Zoo, we
actually had to limit the kids to three questions apiece or we would
have been there for a week or more! With a few minor hiccups
along the way, we made it to all the places we had planned to see
(and had loads of fun!). I’m going to miss those kids. It was a blast
and I’ll always remember them!
