Introduction to Greenspring Activities
Residents initiate and develop regular activities or special events that enhance the overall quality of life in our
community. The philosophy of residents sharing their
gifts and talents is the foundation of the rich activity program at Greenspring. It is both the individual and
groups of residents who make a difference in our community.
Over 190 activities and groups have started since November 1998. The days
ahead promise to be exciting as new people with vastly different life experiences move to Greenspring and bring with them a broad range of interests, talents, and gifts. New residents will continue to move into our community, providing new opportunities for activities and friendships.
Most of the groups, clubs, and organizations active in the community are listed
in this handbook. Each listing includes a brief description provided by the
Resident Leader. Included also is their name and phone number and they can
give more information or assistance with any questions.
Remember that all groups need and welcome new
members. Most games can use more players and
events can use additional volunteers and participants. As you read through this handbook, if a title appeals to you or you have a special interest,
don’t hesitate to ask. New ideas and new groups
are always welcome. You may be the resident who
starts an activity that will be listed in next year’s
handbook.
This handbook is an annual publication meant to act as a guide for activities and organizations available at Greenspring. Due to the active
nature of our campus, groups and meeting places are frequently
changing. It is very important to check bulletin boards, the monthly
activities calendar and Channel 6 on a regular basis to make certain
that you have the most current information regarding group meetings.

Community Resources Mission Statement
Our mission in Community Resources is to foster and facilitate
a dynamic resident-driven activities program. We empower and
encourage residents to use their talents, gifts and energy to
bring life and fullness to the Greenspring Community.
Who are the Community Resources Staff?
Maureen Davis, VS Community Resources Coordinator, first came to Erickson
in 2000 as a Greenspring Gala volunteer. Until 2006, she was employed by the
community’s Sales and Marketing Department as their Marketing Events Coordinator. Maureen’s educational and professional background has been primarily in
creative arts and graphic design. As an entrepreneur, she headed her own interior
design business in several states; and, with her husband, Gene, started a custom
home building company as well as an ice cream/bakery shop in Myrtle Beach,
SC. Personally, she has been involved with the Washington Regional Transplant
Consortium and served on the board of a foundation benefiting the blind. Away
from work, she enjoys candy making, theatre, swimming, and dear friends especially her dog, “Chelsea”. Maureen’s office is in Village Square across from the
craft room, 703-923-3131 ext. 4035, [email protected].
Sylvia Glover, TC Community Resources Coordinator, joined Greenspring in
July, 2006. Working in the Retirement Community is a second career for her. Sylvia started her professional career in television, working for several stations in
Detroit as a reporter. Her last assignment was with WDIV-TV, the PostNewsweek station, as their entertainment reporter. She then formed her own corporate communications company, writing and producing promotional videos. After volunteering at an assisted living facility, Sylvia changed gears and decided to
go back and finish college. She graduated from the University of Michigan in
2003 with a degree in Behavioral Sciences. She enjoys traveling and photographing where she’s been. She also loves baking, playing the piano and spending
quality time with her 2 cats. Sylvia moved to the Washington area in 2004 to be
near her daughter, Tracey, an attorney for the government. Sylvia resides in Alexandria, Virginia, and when at work can be found close to the Potomac Café on the
second floor of Town Center, 703 923-3131 ext. 4032, [email protected]
7
Christy Groves, HC Community Resources Coordinator, is from Rockville,
Maryland and joined Greenspring in August of 2006. She graduated from Messiah College in May 2006 majoring in Human Development and Family Sciences
and minoring in Gerontology; she is also a Certified Family Life Educator. While
in college, she was a member of Messiahs’ Women’s Basketball Team. She loves
her job, and when she is not at work she enjoys playing basketball/running, baking, hanging out with friends and family, Starbucks, and going on road trips. Her
office is in Hunters Crossing beside Human Resources, so don’t hesitate to visit
her! 703-923-3131 ext. 4270, [email protected].
Elke Martin, Volunteer Program Coordinator, started at Greenspring in November 2004. She comes with a wide variety of professional experience in the
non-profit and business sector. After Elke received her M.A. from the department
of philosophy at the University of Hamburg, Germany, she worked as a writer and
editor for TIME-LIFE books. In the mid-80s, she joined the international environmental protection group Greenpeace. As their executive director she came on
executive transfer to the USA in late 1990. After serving in various capacities for
several non-profit groups, she ran her own advertising and marketing business in
the Springfield area. That was how she learned about Greenspring. When she is
not at work, Elke enjoys being creative in her glass studio or just being outdoors
on her bike or in her kayak. Her office is located on the second floor of Renaissance Gardens, 703-923-3131 ext. 4780, [email protected].

Scheduling a Room at Greenspring
Community space is available for use by Greenspring residents for campus
events, group meetings, clubs, and social events at no cost. To reserve one
of these rooms, please use the following procedure:
1: Decide on the details:
Date
Time
Number of Guests
Type of Room Setup
Special Equipment Needs
Catering Needs
2: Make an appointment with Maureen Davis, Sylvia Glover, or Christy
Groves to discuss the function or meeting.
3: The Community Resources Staff will work with you to determine the room
setup and need for audio/visual equipment. The staff member will complete a request form and email it to dining services for final approval.
4: Dining services maintains the room reservation schedule for the entire
community; all reservations must go through dining services.
5: Dining services is responsible for forwarding the setup and A/V requests to
Housekeeping.
6: Once a work order has been placed by dining services, Housekeeping is responsible for setting up the room.
7: A weekly room reservation schedule is posted outside of each community
room.
A resident leader should arrive at the reserved room 30 minutes prior to the
meeting. If the room is not setup, please go to the front desk and have
housekeeping paged to check on the status of the setup.
9
Starting New Groups
Residents desiring to start a new group or activity should contact the Community
Resources Department. The Community Resources staff will determine whether
the proposed activity is appropriate to Greenspring and does not duplicate an existing activity. The Community Resources staff will serve as a resource for the
residents and as a facilitator. While the residents must arrange for promotion,
scheduling, location, room setup and necessary equipment on their own, the staff
will guide them through the process and direct them to the pertinent staff contacts.
BULLETIN BOARDS
General Guidelines and Policies Regarding Bulletins
Personal ads must be 3 x 5 and include the residents name , apartment number and telephone number. If needed, a Community Resources Coordinator can
provide you with a 3x5 index card.
Bulletins are generally posted for 2 weeks. All expired bulletins will be thrown
away unless otherwise requested by the person posting the notice.
The Bulletin Board Committee Folders (located behind each front desk) will
be checked each day for new bulletins.
Please allow two days for bulletins to be posted.
10
How do I get a flyer posted on our bulletin board?
If you wish to place a bulletin on the board, you are responsible for creating
the bulletin or for recruiting someone to create it for you.
It is preferred that the flyer is made using a “Portrait” Orientation (vertical),
rather than “Landscape” (horizontal).
Posting areas include: Channel 6, bulletin boards in TC, VS, HC, RG, and
video magnifiers in TC, VS and HC. Please submit eight copies of your flyer(s).
All bulletins should be given to a Community Resources Coordinator. If a
coordinator is not present, please take your bulletin to the front desk and have it
placed in the Community Resources mail folder.
The bulletin must be initialed and dated by the Community Resources staff
member.
The Bulletin Board committee member will pick up the bulletins once a day.
ONLYBULLETIN BOARD COMMITTEE MEMBERS ARE AUTHORIZED TO POST ITEMS ON THE BOARD. Please do not add your notice to
the Bulletin Boards yourself.
Only Community-related notices are posted on the GSV Community Bulletin Board.
Residents Needing Help When Making Posters and Flyers
Residents, who start groups and events, often need someone to help them make a
flyer for the bulletin board to promote the event. If you like to use the computer
or other means available to create flyers, please contact Sylvia Glover at 703-9233131 ext. 4032, Christy Groves at 703-923-3131 ext. 4270 or Maureen Davis at
703-923-3131 ext. 4035.

VolunteerOpportunities at Greenspring
and in the Local Community
Elke Martin
Volunteer Program Coordinator
Phone: (703) 923-3131, ext. 4780
Office Location: Renaissance Gardens, Second Floor,Admin. Suite
Email: [email protected]
Would you like to make a difference in someone’s life? Do you like people?
Whether you have a few hours a week or a few hours a month Elke Martin, our
Volunteer Program Coordinator, would like you to contact her. She has many exciting opportunities just waiting for you.
Volunteer Opportunities at Greenspring
If you want to stay on campus, Renaissance Gardens can always use volunteers.
At Renaissance Gardens, you can work individually with a resident or with an entire group of residents leading activities, games, sharing your talents, or just enjoy
a meal together. Also, if you are a part of a group (i.e. The Red Hat Society, The
Blue Jeans, etc), you may sponsor an activity for the residents. For example, your
group may want to sponsor a movie night or a game afternoon. We will make it
possible!
Besides RG, many other volunteer opportunities await you on campus. Several
GSV departments on campus would love to have an enthusiastic office volunteer
to answer phones and assist with clerical work.
Also, our ESL program has been very successful. IL residents teach our staff
from foreign countries how to improve their English language skills.
The Wellness Center is also benefiting from the involvement of volunteers, e.g.
as Balance Class spotters.
If you would like to help out in the Intermissions program, the day program for
IL residents with cognitive issues, we would be grateful.
Channel 6 and the Light&Sound group are very rewarding active places for volunteers.
The Medical Center asks for support from volunteers for the annual Flu clinics.
13
Join the Friendly Neighbor Program
The “Friendly Neighbor Program” was originally established in order to provide
visitation to residents in Renaissance Gardens. For the past year, we have also extended our services to include residents in IL who may need some help in picking
up a meal from the Potomac Café; or who might benefit from a telephone visit.
All participants in this program are residents living in Independent Living. In order to be a part of this program all you need is a willingness to visit your assigned
resident and of course a friendly smile and a kind heart! Contact Elke Martin for
further information.
Volunteer throughout the community
If you would like to work with the surrounding local community, Elke can also
connect you to the many opportunities that exist outside of Greenspring. There
are a number of local agencies that have contacted Elke requesting help, e.g
WETA, the Alzheimer’s Association, MVLE, or various local government agencies.
Local schools need people to be mentors to children, tutoring them in math and
reading skills. Shelters have requested our help also. Maybe you have a talent in
knitting or crocheting. These shelters could benefit from having toys, blankets,
shawls, socks, donated. The local libraries and the Park Service (depending on
the time of year) can use volunteers. Elke is happy to arrange for your involvement. Sometimes the local Chamber of Commerce and GSV team up for a volunteer event at a local business.
Do you know someone who wants to volunteer here at Greenspring?
Some of you may have a grandchild, a neighbor or a friend who would like to volunteer here at Greenspring. If so, they must be at least 14 years old; in some
cases, children younger than 14 can volunteer if they are accompanied by an
adult. Every volunteer (except residents) must participate in a screening interview, a drug screening, TB Test, a background check (18 yrs. or older) and a
three-hour orientation class. All of this is administered on campus and is paid for
through the Volunteer Department. All student volunteers must commit to at least
50 hours of service over a six months period.
Do you want to make a difference in a child’s life?
You may be a former school teacher, or a principal or you may just love children.
If so, come along and participate in our weekly tutoring program. Greenspring
has adopted 5 local elementary schools in the area. Saratoga ES, Hunt Valley ES,
14
Garfield ES, West Springfield ES, and Springfield Estates ES. In the past we have
provided shuttle service to two of the schools; the others are also located very
close to campus and many residents drive over once a week and read with a child
or support their math learning. This is a wonderful program for both the residents
and children. Anyone is welcome, as long as you are willing to commit to this on
a weekly basis. If you are interested, please call Elke Martin at 703-923-3131,
x4780.
Come volunteer at the Ronald MacDonald House!
The Ronald MacDonald House, located in Falls Church Virginia close to Fairfax
Hospital, serves families who have acute or terminally ill children. Many of these
families are from out-of-state and need a comforting place to stay while their child
is receiving treatment. If you are interested in learning about the many volunteer
opportunities that exist at the Ronald MacDonald House, please give Elke a call!
TO LEARN MORE AND MEET SOME OF OUR MANY VOLUNTEERS PICK
UP A COPY OF THE VOLUNTEER HANDBOOK! You can get it from any of
the Community Resources Coordinators.

RESIDENT COUNCIL
The Resident Council is an elected body whose objectives are (1) to act as a liaison between Greenspring residents and management; (2) to advise management
concerning the perceptions of residents regarding the quality of services at Greenspring; (3) to advise residents concerning the purpose behind management policies which affect them; (4) to promote the health, comfort, and safety of the residents at Greenspring and to assist management and staff to improve services; and
(5) to work with management and residents in a spirit of cooperation with the goal
of maintaining a high-quality environment for the good of all concerned.
To help the Council with this work, eleven standing committees have been established. The committee liaisons and chairs are listed in this handbook. If a resident experiences problems living at Greenspring, the resident should first contact
the appropriate staff person, i.e. a supervisor or manager who can do something
about the problem. If this is ineffective, the resident should send a written statement about the problem or concern to the Director of the department with a copy
to the Council. Correspondence for the Council can be delivered to any of the
front desks.
For more information about upcoming Council meetings, a list of committee
members, past meeting minutes, special projects and important announcements
for residents please visit the community bulletin boards and look for the Council
section. We all look forward to another productive year at Greenspring and thank
you for the opportunity to serve as your elected Council.

Office Location: Town Center, beside the Pharmacy

Office Hours: 9:30 am – 4:30 pm
The Special Trips Office provides trips to many wonderful local places of
interest in the Washington area. A monthly calendar of events is distributed
to every apartment cubby and additional copies can be collected from each
community front desk or the Trips Coordinator’s office.
Each month there is an initial walk in sign-up day for trips listed on the new
calendar. The trips do not usually fill up on the first day, so continue to
call-in, visit, or email your trip reservation requests. All trips are billed to
your monthly statement; there is no need for checks or cash.
Occasionally, we have the opportunity to add a trip after distribution of the
calendar. Watch for updates on Channel 6 and the Trip and Travel boards at
each community building. Finally, if you have a suggestion for an exciting
place to visit, let us know.

Friendly Neighbors Group
Edna Brill, CS 503, 451-4075
Quarterly on the 2nd Wednesday, 2:00 pm, VS Craft Room
The Friendly Neighbors group has grown out of the need for RG residents to have
visitors. If you would like to bring some sunshine to one or more of the residents
in Assisted Living, Long Term Care, or the Rehab Unit they would surely appreciate this! In 2005, the Friendly Neighbors group broadened their scope to include
helping IL residents with errands and other occasions where a helping hand is
welcome. If you could see yourself bringing the mail to someone who just came
back from the hospital or the rehab clinic; if you could bring a quart of soy milk
for a neighbor when you go shopping; if you could pick up stamps for a resident
who is not mobile but wants to write some letters – all these are examples of
much appreciated help that the Friendly Neighbors do. The group takes their
leads from the social workers and sets clear boundaries so this does not become a
life commitment! Group members are notified of our quarterly meetings by
cubby note and Channel 6.

around Greenspring, and we have grown the group to
serve 5 local schools: Saratoga Elementary School,
Hunt Valley ES, Garfield ES, West Springfield ES, and Springfield Estates ES.
Some schools take volunteers who drive themselves (or organize a carpool), and
Saratoga and Hunt Valley have our residents shuttled over every week. The shuttle leaves for Hunt Valley on Tuesday mornings, and for Saratoga on Thursday
mornings. Residents are back by lunchtime. The season lasts from the end of October to the beginning of May. It is a very rewarding experience and does not afford any special training. As long as you have a heart for children you’ll be a
