Contact / Information
The conference hotel offers the opportunity of common
lodging and dining facilities and an informal atmosphere to
foster communication among the participants. Interlaken
itself is situated in the beautiful Bernese Oberland in the
heart of the Swiss Alps between Lakes of Thun and Brienz
and at the foot of the famous peaks Eiger, Mönch and
Jungfrau.

COST 535 – THALU
Aluminides are a class of intermetallic compounds that are
becoming increasingly important in materials science as a
result of their highly beneficial physical properties. The
intrinsic complexity of these materials requires that a thorough understanding at a scientific level and application
in an industrial context can be best achieved through the
combination of advanced experimental and theoretical
techniques. COST Action 535 on the Thermodynamics of
Alloyed Aluminides (THALU) began in 2003 as a European
collaborative project to investigate the thermodynamics
and phase equilibria in the core system, Al-Fe-Ni-Ti. A
major goal of the work was the provision of a complete
self-consistent thermodynamic description of this quaternary system. In order to address this, a programme of work
was initiated covering not only assessment of the constituent binary and ternary systems but also of experimental and ab initio studies. The programme was conducted
through a number of collaborative group projects that
allowed scientists from laboratories in different European
nations to work together on particular aspects of aims of
the Action. The successes of this project are not only to
the credit of the scientists involved, but also to the COST
organisation (as part of the European Science Foundation)
who facilitated the collaboration.
COST 535 MC
Like its predecessors (2004: Düsseldorf, 2005: Toulouse,
2006: Mettmann), the meeting will provide a forum to present and discuss the current status of research and development of iron aluminium based alloys which have been
identified as an interesting addition to conventional iron
based materials such as cast iron and steels for structural applications. Iron-aluminium alloys offer a lower density
and good corrosion resistance in combination with high
strength at ambient and intermediate temperatures. Important advantages are the low material costs and the possibility to produce ingots or parts by techniques which are
readily available within the industry.
The meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 24, 2007
with related sessions already held over the two preceding
days. Topics of the discussion meeting include:
• Novel light-weight steels
• Alloys for high-temperature applications
• Constitution, phase transformations, defects
(experiments and modelling)
• Fundamental aspects/properties
• Microstructures and mechanical properties
• Processing and joining
• Coatings
• Environmental resistance and oxidation
