While occurring in Dublin 3,000 miles away, it is proper and fitting that we as Americans mark this date. The Rising and Ireland’s fight for freedom could not have occurred without “Ireland’s Exiled Children in America”, just as America’s Independence could not have been achieved without the nine Irish American signers of the Declaration of Independence, the twenty generals and 25-35% of Washington’s Army that were Irish. Five of the seven signatories of the Proclamation had traveled to America in the decade prior to the Rising. Two, James Connolly and Tom Clarke had lived in America for a considerable period of time. Tom Clarke was an American citizen when he was executed by a British firing squad on 3 May 1916. The Proclamation of 1916 they fought for contained the very American principles of religious freedom and civil rights, and well in advance of even America, universal suffrage for men and women. The men and women of 1916 did not fight to subjugate or impose their values on others, but for the right to choose their own destiny. In 1916, it was the men and women of the Rising who were fighting for the right of “Small Nations to be free” at the GPO, not the tragic Tommies at the Somme. In this 54th Rockland County St. Patrick’s Day Parade we salute the men and women of 1916, not simply because of the Irish connection, but as Americans who value freedom and admire those of any nation willing to defend that most basic right no matter what the personal sacrifice. Neil F. Cosgrove, Irish American Heritage Month Committee Chair In Memoriam On this Saint Patrick’s Day, we remember our dedicated and faithful Hibernian, Terence Greenan. Terry proudly represented Rockland County as Grand Marshal in 2009. May he Rest In Peace.
