Sunday, August 19, 2012, 3:00 PM
This performance will not include an intermission.
The taking of photographs or use of recording devices is strictly prohibited.
BIOGRAPHY
ENGELBERT HUMPERDINCK, “The King of
Romance,” has wooed generations of fans worldwide with
love songs such as the No. One The Last Waltz, Am I That
Easy to Forget, A Man Without Love, and I’ll Walk Alone. His
Top 10 hit, After the Lovin’, was nominated for a Grammy
and achieved Gold status. In all, Humperdinck, whom
Billboard called “a sensitive lyric interpreter with excellent
vocal technique,” has recorded 63 Gold albums and 24
Platinum records throughout the course of his career.
Romance has long been at the core of Humperdinck’s
repertoire and lasting success. Born Arnold George Dorsey,
the crooner changed his name to Engelbert Humperdinck,
after the 19th-century Austrian composer. With a three-anda-half-octave vocal range, the singer worked his way into
hearts and charts with an endless string of hits that included
Help Me Make It Through the Night, The Way It Used to Be,
and There Goes My Everything.
Humperdinck’s Pop-ballad version of Release Me
(And Let Me Love Again) rocketed to the top of the British
charts, selling more than a million copies and eventually
landing on the Top 10 in the United States. Other hits
for Humperdinck, who won a 1988 Golden Globe for
“Entertainer of the Year,” include This Moment in Time and
Til You and Your Lover Are Lovers Again.

Colin Mochrie
& Brad Sherwood
Friday, August 24, 2012, 8:00 PM
This performance will not include an intermission.
The taking of photographs or use of recording devices is strictly prohibited.
BIOGRAPHIES
After years of successful solo tours, COLIN MOCHRIE
and BRAD SHERWOOD joined forces in 2002 to expand
on the appeal of the critically acclaimed Whose Line Is It
Anyway? comedy series, creating wacky characters, funny
scenarios, and songs on the spot. This novel concept and
innovative format has turned the duo into one of the hottest
improv-comedy teams around. Mochrie and Sherwood’s
success is a strong testament to the experience and unique
comic chemistry that the two friends share.
Mochrie is an alumnus of Canada’s prestigious Second
City comedy theater troupe, for which he co-wrote, directed,
and headlined in numerous productions. The award-winning
stand-up comedian – who has appeared in the popular
Emmy-nominated television sitcom The Drew Carey Show
and Jackie Chan’s box-office hit comedy The Tuxedo – also
hosts Canada’s version of Fox’s popular game show Are You
Smarter Than a 5th Grader?
Mochrie is like “a walking Far Side cartoon,” says his
stage buddy Sherwood. “You never know where he’s coming
6
from.” Mochrie credits Charlie Chaplin, the Marx Brothers,
Jack Benny, Monty Python, John Cleese, Woody Allen, and
Bob Hope as major influences in his comedy career.
Like Mochrie, Sherwood was also a regular on The
Drew Carey Show. The comedian, who began performing at
age 8, graduated with an acting degree from Wright State
University in Dayton, Ohio. He discovered the art of improv
comedy during his college years and was immediately drawn
to the genre’s originality and the avenues it provides for
collaborating with the audience.
Sherwood has appeared on L.A. Law, the revival of To
Tell the Truth, and The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. He has
hosted My VH1 Music Awards and the televised game shows
The Big Moment and The Dating Game.
Due to the popularity of Whose Line Is It Anyway? and
the positive response to their two-man comedy tour, both
men now juggle rigorous performance schedules on ABC,
Comedy Central, and the Lifetime Channel.

SALLY WILFERT, SOPRANO
MICHAEL WINTHER, TENOR

This performance will not include an intermission.

12
BIOGRAPHies
For nearly 20 years, ROB KAPILOW has brought the
joy and wonders of Classical music – and unraveled some
of its mysteries – to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
Characterized by his unique ability to create an “aha”
moment for his audiences and collaborators, whatever
their level of musical sophistication or naiveté, Kapilow’s
work brings music into people’s lives – opening new ears to
musical experiences and helping people to listen actively
rather than just hear. The Boston Globe said, “It’s a cheering
thought that this kind of missionary enterprise did not pass
from this earth with Leonard Bernstein. Rob Kapilow is
awfully good at what he does. We need him.”
The reach of his interactive events and activities
is wide, both geographically and culturally – from native
American tribal communities in Montana and inner-city
high school students in Louisiana to wine tasters in the
Napa Valley. From tots barely out of diapers to musicologists
hailed from Ivy League programs, his audiences are diverse
and unexpected, but invariably rapt and keen to come back
for more.
Kapilow’s range of activities is astonishingly broad,
including his What Makes It Great? presentations (now
in their 16th season in New York and Boston), his family
compositions and Family Musik events, and his Citypieces.
His popularity and appeal are reflected in notable
invitations and achievements; he appeared on NBC’s Today
Show in conversation with then-host Katie Couric, and
presented a special What Makes It Great? event for broadcast
on PBS’s Live From Lincoln Center in 2008. He has written
two highly popular books published by Wiley/Lincoln
Center: All You Have to Do Is Listen (2008), which won a
PROSE Award for “Best Book in Music and Performing
Arts,” and What Makes It Great? (2011), the first book of its
kind to be specially designed for the iPad with embedded
musical examples.
A documentary film – Summer Sun, Winter Moon,
named after Kapilow’s choral and symphonic work of the
same title – aired nationwide on PBS. He also wrote a
piece for the Marin Symphony commemorating the 75th
anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Kapilow’s career has been marked by numerous major
awards and grants. He won first place in the Fontainebleau
Casadesus Piano Competition and was the second-place
winner of the Antal Dorati Conductor’s Competition
with the Detroit Symphony. Featured on Chicago Public
Radio’s prestigious Composers in America series, Kapilow is
a recipient of an Exxon “Meet-the-Composer” grant and
numerous ASCAP awards.
Kapilow has conducted many of North America’s
finest orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra; the
National Symphony; the St. Louis, Atlanta, Toronto, and
Detroit symphonies; and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.
He is an exclusive Schirmer composer and his compositions
have been performed by almost every major American
orchestra as well as ensembles in Europe, Asia, and
Australia.
SALLY WILFERT has appeared on Broadway
in Assassins, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and Walt
Disney’s King David. She performed in the first national
tour of the Tony award-winning The 25th Annual Putnam
County Spelling Bee. Her Off-Broadway credits include See
Rock City; The Lady in Penthouse B; Make Me A Song: The
Music of William Finn; The Mistress Cycle; and The Prince
& The Pauper. At Carnegie Hall she has appeared in Cole
Porter’s Jubilee, South Pacific in Concert (featuring Reba
McEntire), and Sondheim: A Musical Tribute. As a soloist
performing with the New York City Ballet at Lincoln Center,
Wilfert was featured singing Somewhere for the company’s
performances of West Side Story Suite. She has performed
at the La Jolla Playhouse, Cincinnati Playhouse, Baltimore
Center Stage, Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, New Haven’s
Schubert Theatre, Barrington Stage, Northshore Music
Theatre, Hartford Theatreworks, The Fulton Opera House,
Connecticut Grand Opera, and the Ensemble Theatre of
Cincinnati (Little Miss Sunshine, Marry Me A Little, Les
Miserables, The Last Five Years, Amadeus, Into the Woods, and
The Threepenny Opera). Wilfert has appeared with Kapilow
in What Makes it Great? in major venues throughout the
country, celebrating the songs of George Gershwin, Cole
Porter, and Leonard Bernstein. Her other concert credits
include William Finn’s Songs of Innocence and Experience;
Broadway in South Africa; Jeff Blumenkrantz Songbook;
Elegies: A Song Cycle; and New York City Christmas. Wilfert’s
recording credits include Sweet Little Devil; Kitty’s Kisses;
13
New York City Christmas; Make Me A Song; Assassins; King
David; The Prince & the Pauper; A Christmas Survival Guide;
South Pacific in Concert; and Sondheim: A Musical Tribute.
Wilfert’s television credits include The Americans, Loving,
and Law & Order Criminal Intent.
Acclaimed by The New York Times as “a theater
singer of unusual refinement” and “impeccable taste” with
“a voice that traverses genres,” MICHAEL WINTHER

Vocal Group Hall of Fame honoree THE LEGENDARY
TEENAGERS wowed fans universally with the million-selling
single Why Do Fools Fall in Love. The song still “stands as one
of the key records by which the Doo-Wop style is defined
and remembered,” hailed the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,
which inducted the band in 1993. The group’s chart-topping
hits include I Want You to Be My Girl, Who Can Explain?,
The ABCs of Love, and Goody Goody.
LEWIS LYMON, who once performed with The
Legendary Teenagers, made his mark on the music world
with The Teenchords and the hits I’m So Happy and Your
Last Chance. The band’s other hits include the up-tempo
Honey, Honey; the popular ballad Please Tell the Angels; I’m
Not Too Young to Fall in Love; and Falling in Love.
With a string of hits – including I Only Have Eyes
for You, Lovers Never Say Goodbye, Love Walked In, and
Mio Amore – TERRY JOHNSON’S FLAMINGOS was
“the best of their era,” raved Rolling Stone magazine. The
group, whose tunes are featured in the Oscar-winning film
Something’s Gotta Give and the television shows Buffy the
Vampire Slayer and Jeopardy, was inducted into the Grammy
Award Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
JIMMY GALLAGHER & THE PASSIONS rocked

the Doo-Wop world with the million-selling single Just to
Be With You, Gloria, I Only Want You, This Is My Love, and
Made for Lovers. The group has appeared at major venues,
including Radio City Music Hall, Madison Square Garden,
The Nassau Coliseum, and the Paramount Theatre.
Variety magazine hailed JIMMY CLANTON, saying,
“This ageless entertainer sings as if he were a universe
of music.” The man who belted out hits such as Another
Sleepless Night, Venus in Blue Jeans, and the Top 10 Go Jimmy
Go was declared “truly a star in any era” by The Hollywood
Reporter. Clanton was inducted into the Louisiana Music
Hall of Fame in 2007.

Shimmy Like Kate, and The Bounce.

SPIRITUALS TO FUNK
Featuring
DR. JOHN &
THE BLIND BOYS
OF ALABAMA
Wednesday, October 10, 2012, 8:00 PM
This performance will not include an intermission.
The taking of photographs or use of recording devices is strictly prohibited.
BIOGRAPHIES
In SPIRITUALS TO FUNK, Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame inductee DR. JOHN and five-time Grammy winner
THE BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA build on a legacy
that started with Dr. John’s appearance on The Blind Boys’
Grammy-winning album Down in New Orleans.
Grammy winner Dr. John’s colorful musical career is filled
with collaborations with some of the industry’s greatest talents,
including Sonny and Cher, Van Morrison, Aretha Franklin,
Eric Clapton, and The Rolling Stones. Dr. John’s musical love
letter to New Orleans, N’awlinz Dis Dat or D’udda, garnered
the prestigious Académie Charles Cros 57ème Palmarès Award
in France. It was the first time since the 1970s that a North
American entertainer received the honor.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Dr. John
released City That Care Forgot, which won a Grammy for
“Best Contemporary Blues Album.” Other albums include
the acclaimed Sun, Moon and Herbs; Sippiana Hericane; and
In the Right Place, which features the hits Right Place Wrong
Time and Such a Night.
Since 1939, The Blind Boys of Alabama have sung
a fervent blend of traditional and contemporary Gospel
music. A master at bringing out the most spiritual aspects of
mainstream music, the group has won legions of loyal fans
and widespread acclaim with a repertoire of soul-searching
songs and four-part harmony sound. The band, inducted
into the Christian Music Hall of Fame, has won Grammys
for the albums Spirit of the Century, Higher Ground, Go Tell It
on the Mountain, and There Will Be a Light.
With its critically acclaimed album, Down in New
Orleans, the long-running ensemble proves it is still shaping
music history. Recorded with a stellar cast of local singers
in the Big Easy, the album is a celebration of the city’s
Gospel-influenced soul. Rolling Stone magazine called the
compilation “a superweapon of Roots-music uplift.” The
Washington Post praised it as “inspired and relevant. ... [It]
borders on the miraculous.”
