DEC Welcomes Guest Speaker
Dr. Michele Egli, DVM
A very sincere
thanks to Dr.
Michele Egli
from Delmarva
Equine Clinic in
Dover who presented information on
Cushing’s Disease at the September 15th
Delaware
Equine Council
monthly meeting. Dr. Egli is a
partner in Delmarva Equine and has been with
them since June 1999. She earned her undergraduate degree at Rutgers University and her
graduate degree at Cornell University College of
Veterinary Medicine.
Cushing’s Disease is normally found in older
horses. Dr. Egli discussed the signs, diagnosis,
and potential treatment. The Delaware Equine
Council sincerely appreciates Dr. Egli taking
time out of her very busy schedule to join our
group. We received a lot of positive feedback
and plan to continue to have more of these informative presentations throughout the year
from local participating veterinarians.
Thank you so much Dr. Egli!

2014 Member Appreciation Day
By Pam Nebel
The Delaware Equine Council held its 2nd Annual Member Appreciation Day event at Redden Headquarters on Sunday, September
28. We wish to thank everyone who attended. Lots of new faces
were in the crowd. We had 78 attendees, received 21 new members along with 14 active members renewing their memberships
that day.
Many thanks to commercial member Mary Bashtarz of “Riding by
Design,” for presenting an educational demonstration on the biomechanics of saddle use. This far surpasses the conventional “saddle
fitting” techniques that we
have learned, or
not learned, and
teaches us the
correct use of
the body with
both the horse
and rider.
Mary’s knowledge of the
structure of a
horse and the
various types of
riders takes saddle use to greater heights. Many thanks to Shirley Mihm for bringing
her Morgan horse, General, and participating in the demonstration.
Shirley rode General in two different saddles to show the difference
in his movement under each.
Thank you to Julie Passwaters (jewelry), Joan Coble (tack sale)
and Mary Bashtarz (Balance saddle education) for setting up their
tables.
The weather was beautiful and many people brought their horses
to ride on the trails. It was a great time to catch up with friends that
you have not seen in a while and for making new friends too.
We cannot say enough about Shorty’s catering. The lunch he
provided was absolutely delicious. Many compliments were shared
and we have already booked him for next year. Thank you, Shorty,
for being a key element in the success of our event.
Our photographers for the day were Charlotte Grant and Amanda
Woodall. Be watching Facebook and our website (www.delawareequinecouncil.com) for upcoming pictures!
Congratulations to all our door prize winners! Thanks goes out to
Barbara Dixon for donating a free farrier service. Door prizes provided by DEC included DEC polo shirts, sweatshirts and a gift certificate for a one-hour Riding by Design consultation with Mary
Bashtarz.
It was great to see everyone and we hope to see you again next
year! Tell your friends about us and encourage them to join.

NOTES
FROM
YOUR EDITOR
As we head into autumn,
there is still a lot going on
within DEC. Now is really the
time to get involved. The
more active members we
have within the organization,
the more we can spread out
all of our good work. Members are currently working
hard to put the directory together. Elections will be held
in November. The newsletter
is an ongoing project. A little
bit goes a long way! Contact any member of the board of
directors if you wish to lend a hand.

President’s Message
Super turn out for Member Appreciation Day on Sep 28. Close to 80
attended and enjoyed the beautiful
weather as well as the great food
provided by Shorty. Several joined
as new members, and many paid
their dues for 2015! Thanks everyone.
Those in attendance at our regular monthly meeting in
September were treated to an outstanding talk by Dr. Egli
on Cushing’s disease. We will continue to have a visiting
vet talk on a quarterly basis.
Remember, deer hunting season is upon us. Be extra
cautious going into the woods this time of the year.
At the November monthly meeting, we will hold our annual elections for several positions. Please come out and
Stan Vonasek
vote.

Red Maple Toxicity in Horses
By Christina Dayton DVM
All Creatures Veterinary Service
Red Maple or Acer Rubrum can cause problems
for equines who live on the East
Coast. This is a disease that typically is seen in the summer or fall
when leaves are dry or wilted.
Fresh leaves do not cause problems. The specific toxin has not
been identified, but the toxin is only
present in the wilted or dried
leaves. Symptoms of Red Maple
toxicity include weakness, lethargy, anorexia, colic,
and fever. Your horse's mucous membranes may
be yellow or brown, and their urine may be red or
brown (coffee colored).
The toxin in the leaves damages red blood cells
and makes them less capable of carrying oxygen
and causes anemia. If your veterinarian suspects
Red Maple toxicity, he or she will do a thorough
physical exam, and run a complete blood count and
chemistry. Treatment includes IV fluids and possible blood transfusion. Prognosis of a horse with
Red Maple toxicity depends on the amount of
leaves the horse eats and how quickly veterinary
care is sought afterward. Death can occur if the
horse becomes severely anemic.
To prevent Red Maple toxicity, avoid exposure to
the plant. Do not plant red maples on your property.
Prune or remove existing trees only when there are
no leaves on the trees. Check for fallen branches
immediately after storms.

DEC Youth Member’s Dream Comes True
Erin Kozielec became a DEC youth member this year
through my sponsorship. I am her riding instructor and a
DEC member. Erin had taken lessons somewhat inconsistently over the years. Early on, when Erin was very
young, she and her family traveled north for lessons. Some years later, they found me and I’m
still working with the sweet horse-crazy little
girl who I first met that is now a sweet
horse-crazy teenager. She is now 14
years old.
Last winter, when Erin and her parents, Rachael and Curtis Kozielec, decided it was time to find Erin a horse of
her own, they started an internet
search that leaves most of us dreaming and frustrated at the same time.
Together, we discussed what Erin was
looking for and combined that with her
known skill set and an approximate
budget in order to begin our search. It
was not easy getting her to describe the
absolute ideal horse breed, color, and
skills of the horse of her dreams. She really wanted a horse even if it was far from
perfect. Thank goodness for networking. The
search ended quickly. DEC member Kayla Rex
just happened to be selling a horse that fit the description of Erin’s “dream horse” including all the other requirements. Kayla’s gelding’s experience, age, breed, color
and even the price was right! Erin and her family soon had

their eyes and hearts set on “Joker.” With Erin paying for
half of Joker’s purchase price from the money had she
earned and saved herself then her parents paying the rest,
Joker quickly became part of the Kozielec family.
Erin’s relationship with Joker actually started out
questionable. He challenged almost everything
she asked of him. Through instruction and dedication, they started to become better friends.
Now their love and respect for each other is
very strong. Joker is an excellent teacher
and friend for Erin. I would say he is the
perfect first horse for her. She is most
likely the best last owner he could have
too. They both feel so loved. Since
Joker is Erin’s first horse, she has been
learning a lot about horse keeping. In
fact, after a recent lesson on Joker, Erin
told me that taking care of her own horse
is much different than taking care of
mine. The horses at my farm serve different purposes and also have a different environment. Neither is wrong. They are just
different. This is why I chose to sponsor
Erin’s DEC membership earlier this year. I
want her to learn all she can about this amazing
animal she bought. I want her to learn what the
equine community has to offer so she and Joker can
grow within it.
Joker is Erin’s dream come true, and he is just the beginning of many more dreams to come.

Wicomico Hunt Club
By Holly Covey
Wicomico Hunt is one of the oldest equestrian organizations still in existence on Delmarva, having been formed in
1939 in Salisbury, MD. The hunt is basically an enthusiastic
group of riders who live in both Delaware and Maryland, of
both sexes, and just about all ages! We enjoy mounted foxchasing during the hunting season at farms and places
called "fixtures" in both states, because, as we all know,
the fox doesn't pay much attention to state lines!
You've probably heard of foxhunting, but here are a few
facts about Wicomico Hunt and foxchasing on Delmarva:
While the hunt is recognized by the Masters of Fox
Hounds Association, the governing body of our sport in
North America, we are really a fun and often informal group
- we do not always wear the traditional black boots and
scarlet coats you remember from the old hunting prints! We
often have informal hunting days, as well as offering our
very popular paper chases in spring and fall. Many of us do
not jump or gallop but enjoy staying together at a slower
pace and watching the hound pack find and follow the line
of the fox. Our hounds are well trained and carefully managed and are
not usually allowed to kill a
fox. Our dues
are low for the
amount of time
we spend going
out each season. We usually
have a great
"tailgate",
called a hunt
breakfast, following our formal hunts, and
our spouses

and non-riders are welcome to be a part of our camaraderie. If you want to jump and go faster, you can - but our
masters control the "fields" (groups of mounted riders) gently so that everyone has a good time. We ride over land
that is truly spectacular and reminds us all of the treasure
we have living here and being able to experience nature up
close and on horseback.
If you would like to ride with us, please contact one of our
