Piedmont Horticulture A Newsletter for Friends of www.cienerbotanicalgarden.org January 2014 A View from the Garden... Hello, it is with great pride that I greet you from the Garden as the new Executive Director and look forward to meeting and working with all our volunteers, donors, supporters and friends. We have much to do in 2014 and I am eager to get our plans underway. My primary focus for 2014 will be to seek out ways in which all of us can live out the core of the John Wisnant Executive Director Garden’s mission to “inspire, educate and connect” folks to this beautiful space and to create new spaces as well. As you may know, there are so many things going on at the Garden and each of them provides a special way for you to “connect”. Once here, either for the first time or as a return visitor, please let us know one way we were able to “educate” you and what feature(s) served to “inspire”. Each of these is very important to us. Please take a moment to note your calendar of the upcoming events and programs we offer and plan now to attend. Chip Callaway joins us again on February 13th with a great program of jaunts in the English Countryside, the Chelsea Flower Show and in his latest gardens. It is a program not to be missed. What a fun way to launch the Valentine Day weekend. Also, coming on March 13th is Ms. Douglas Thomas, the owner of a 400 acre Connecticut estate, for a brunch and lecture. The last couple weeks of 2013 were an especially busy time at the Garden with Holiday party rentals, installation of a water retention cistern at our Nursery and preparation for and planting of thousands of bulbs in the Pattern Garden for our glorious Toast of the Tulips spring display. Stay tuned for more information on how you can “connect” with the Garden to enjoy that special time of the year. In closing, I want to thank former Executive Director Kitty Lyon for her outstanding job over the last few years in leading the Garden. Her work leaves us well suited for a bright and growing future. 215 South Main Street Kernersville, NC 27284 Phone: 336.996.7888 Fax: 336.996.7884 2 Calendar of Upcoming Events... Roethling Garden Curator Though it seems winter has finally taken over, it’s hard to imagine that bulbs will be blooming right around the corner. This season, our good friends Brent and Becky Heath of Brent and Becky’s Bulbs invited us back again to gather bulbs in continuation of our wonderful spring display. We brought back a donation of 31,000 spring blooming bulbs. The spring bulb display is in peak performance during the month of April. But, let’s not forget the early season bulbs that begin blooming in February. Half of the 31,000 bulbs begin to bloom in late February and last all spring season while others bloom out in a matter of weeks. To really appreciate the scope of the donation, one must visit the gardens repeatedly. Of the early season bulbs, spring ephemerals such as Scilla, Anemone, grape hyacinths and more are included as well as the early tulips and daffodils. You can expect to see over 4000 spring ephemerals blooming throughout the entire display garden. Anemone blanda or windflower naturalizes over time and grows 6 inches tall. Daisy-like flowers come in shades of blue, purple and white and sit above the deeply cut leathery-green leaves. Scilla, commonly known as squill, has narrow green leaves giving rise to 4” spikes of blue flowers. Lastly, Muscari or grape-hyacinths begin blooming in February and will last well into April. The average height of grape hyacinths are 6” and pair well with early blooming daffodils. The daffodil mixed with the grape hyacinth in the above photo is Narcissus ‘Barrett Browning.’ This daffodil is considered a small cup (division 3) with its glowing white petals giving way to a bright orange-red cup maturing to orange. Both the grape hyacinth and daffodil make great perennializers for the Piedmont region of NC. Of the early blooming tulips, and my favorite, are some of the species tulips. Species tulips are far underused in the garden. Commonly known as lady tulips, Tulipa clusiana var. chrysantha have yellow interior petals with bright red exteriors. Lady tulips as well as the many other species average at 12” in height and begin blooming in March. Tulipa clusiana varieties also come in red with white interior or pink with white interior. In addition to planting them in the Pattern Garden, they also have been showcased in our Perennial Border since 2009. Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden continues to promote the Bloomin’ Bucks program through Brent and Becky’s Bulbs. Bloomin’ Bucks is a program which supports organizations by taking 25% of your purchase and giving it to your favorite non-profit. When you place your order, don’t forget to click on Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden in the drop down menu of the website, http://www.bloominbucks.com/. You can find the fall 2013 catalogs in our Gift Shop so that you can record your favorite bulbs or combinations while strolling through the Pattern Garden, as well as Brent and Becky Heath’s revised editions of their “Tulips” and “Daffodils” for North American Gardens. Each book features over 300 color photos, including planting and care information for hundreds of varieties of tulips and daffodils. www.cienerbotanicalgarden.org 4 The Dolores and Wyatt LeFever Garden Shop Kim Babyak Garden Shop Manager Garden Shop Hours Tuesday - Friday 10 am - 4pm Saturday 11 am - 4 pm Contact Kim Babyak at 336.996.7888 As I write this, it is cold and rainy outside, but when I look into the Garden Gift Shop, it is bright, cheerful and welcoming! We had a wonderful holiday here at the Garden and we hope you did, too! Congratulations to Barbara Lehman! She won the drawing for our Christmas Gift Basket. Thank you to all those who did enter, we will have another Gift Basket drawing soon! [email protected] with any questions Shopping is probably the last thing you want to think about so soon after the holidays, but there is always a special occasion or person that you need just the right gift for and we probably have just what you are looking for! We now carry Napa pottery in the Shop. We have the mini urn and cache pot in celery green and white. The glaze is rich and gorgeous and has some slight distressing. Both the cache pot and urn are ideal for small plants or hostess gifts. Also made by Napa is our flying pig! He (or she!) is just waiting to fly into the arms of someone special! Our flying pig has a beautiful green glaze, with some distressing as well. It is never too early to think about your spring garden. Wouldn’t a moss-finished musical angel provide that unique and special touch? She would look gorgeous inside until the danger of frost is over, and then she can move to that perfect spot in your garden. We know how the cold weather wreaks havoc on our skin and we have the perfect solution! Our Naked Bee products are wonderful for soothing dry skin. You can try the Hand and Body Lotion that comes in three sizes, convenient for your pocket, purse or home. We have the Hand and Cuticle Healing Salve and Lip Balm as well. All Naked Bee products are 70% Certified Organic and made in the USA. The Orange Blossom Honey scent is amazing; all it takes is one sniff and it will be going home with you! We still have a few half price items left to sell. We have some scented candles and some 2013 dated Christmas ornaments. We also have some puzzles and goodies for children. Come by and check it out before it is gone! We invite you to visit the Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden and when you do, please stop in the Dolores and Wyatt LeFever Gift Shop! We look forward to seeing you! www.cienerbotanicalgarden.org 5 A Fond Farewell... On December 17th, friends, family, volunteers, Garden supporters, Board of Directors and fellow co-workers gathered to wish Kitty all the best in her retirement as Executive Director of the Garden. Board President David Ciener cited Kitty’s hard work and dedication to the Garden and presented her with a gift certificate as a show of appreciation from the Board. Kitty expressed her deep appreciation for the support of a great Board, the work of a dedicated staff and the friendship and involvement of many volunteers, supporters and friends of the Garden during her tenure as Executive Director. She informed those gathered that rest, relaxation and grandmother time were on her most immediate agenda, but she would not be far away and assured everyone she would be volunteering back at the Garden in the very near future. With that comment, Program Coordinator Toni Hays presented Kitty with a Volunteer Registration Form as her parting gift. At the staff luncheon on the 23rd, her co-workers presented Kitty with gift certificate as a token of their esteem. At both events, fond farewells were exchanged and plans were discussed for continue interaction with the Garden and its friends. ...A Note From Kitty It has been my greatest pleasure to serve you, our Friends, Volunteers and Board of Directors, in leading the Garden over the last 2 ½ years! I have had the opportunity to work with the most dedicated and talented staff assembled, and I am very grateful. Each of you has made your mark on this vibrant Botanical Garden, and it shows. We have all taken great pride in establishing this prominent landmark in the Piedmont Triad. I am confident that we will expand our significance under the creative leadership of our new Executive Director, John Whisnant, and I look forward to supporting John’s efforts in the future. As I have encouraged so often, please visit the Garden and watch for the new developments as they unfold. I hope to see you here! Volunteer Covered Dish Dinner On Tuesday, December 10th the Garden hosted a Volunteer Covered Dish dinner. Volunteers brought their favorite dish to share. The evening began with everyone enjoying beer, wine or punch and appetizers while they socialized with their friends. We had a bounty of food that was delicious and enjoyed by all. The contributions that our Volunteers made during the year were recognized. The best dressed and wackiest Christmas sweater winners were chosen. Finally, the Garden Guild presented Kitty Lyon with a beautiful crystal bird bath that they made in honor of her retirement. A fun time was had by all! Thank you Volunteeers. We appreciate everything you do for the Garden. www.cienerbotanicalgarden.org 6 Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden Volunteer of the Season We recognize one volunteer each season whom we feel has done an outstanding job for the Garden. Volunteers are the heart of Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden. They generously give their time both here at the Garden and at the nursery. Some volunteers come occasionally and some come to volunteer on a weekly basis. Those who come on a weekly basis have truly been helpful in many ways and have been flexible with their time as well as our needs. Our Volunteer for this season jumps in to do any task that needs to be done. He volunteers at our nursery propagating and repotting, and at the Garden mulching, Marc pruning, and weeding. He helps maintain our large planting beds such as our Newman Perennial Border and our newly expanded Tropical Garden, and helps with major seasonal installations in the spring. This past summer, he formed the committee that developed the 3rd Grade tour program that meets the Essential Standards. He also works with the CBVT students (Community Based Vocational Training for high school students). Our Volunteer for this season is Marc Newman. Please join us in thanking him for all of his hard work and support of the Garden. As a small token of the Garden’s appreciation, Marc will receive a gift certificate to a restaurant here in downtown Kernersville to enjoy! Thank you Marc for helping us recognize a special person. Congratulations Marc and thank you for all you do for the Garden!
