St. Valentine, the Real Story
Ribbon Cutting of Expansion at Northford Ice Facility
Northford Ice Pavilion LLC, Marty Roos, John Lashar, Al Secondino
and Michael Belfonti have just completed construction of a $4.5M expansion of their existing 2,000 seat ice skating facility at 24 Fire-Lite Place in
Northford, CT. The new facility has more rinks under one roof than any
other Connecticut ice skating venue.
A ribbon cutting ceremony took place on Friday, January 29 and the
Grand Opening will be held on February 6, 2016 from 12:00 to 3:00
p.m., with free public skating to be offered during those hours.
The Northford Ice Pavilion originally opened in 1998 after
the four partners saw a need for an ice rink facility in New Haven county which could service neighboring communities. “We
originally chose Northford because of its close proximity to many
towns that did not have their own ice skating rinks,” said partner Marty Roos. “The Connecticut economy has improved over
the last several years and the popularity of ice hockey has increased, and we experienced a stronger demand for ice time. We
recognized that a third rink was necessary,” added partner John Lashar.
The original two ice surfaces of the Northford Ice Pavilion, as
well as the new third rink, were built by one of the partners, Al
Secondino, and his company A. Secondino and Son. Mr. Secondino’s company is a full service general contracting company that has
been in continuous operation for over a century. In fact, its founder
(AI’s grandfather) built the NY Metropolitan Opera House. (above photo

History gives us many different legends on Valentine’s Day. Why, where, how
and when it was started. This story is simply one of the many that has been told
and followed by many Christians throughout the years. It is said that St. Valentine
while in prison cured the emperor’s blind daughter. On the day he was beheaded
(February 14) he sent her a final letter and signed it “your Valentine”
The origin of this holiday for the expression of love really isn’t romantic at all
-- at least not in the traditional sense. Father Frank O’Gara of Whitefriars Street
Church in Dublin, Ireland, tells the real story of the man behind the holiday -- St.
Valentine.
“He was a Roman Priest at a time when there was an emperor called Claudias
who persecuted the church at that particular time,” Father O’Gara explains. “ He
also had an edict that prohibited the marriage of young people. This was based on
the hypothesis that unmarried soldiers fought better than married soldiers because
married soldiers might be afraid of what might happen to them or their wives or
families if they died.”
“I think we must bear in mind that it was a very permissive society in which
Valentine lived,” says Father O’Gara. “Polygamy would have been much more
popular than just one woman and one man living together. And yet some of them
seemed to be attracted to Christian faith. But obviously the church thought that
marriage was very sacred between one man and one woman for their life and
that it was to be encouraged. And so it immediately presented the problem to the
Christian church of what to do about this.”
“The idea of encouraging them to marry within the Christian church was what
Valentine was about. And he secretly married them because of the edict.”
Valentine was eventually caught, imprisoned and tortured for performing marriage ceremonies against command of Emperor Claudius the second. There are
legends surrounding Valentine’s actions while in prison.
“One of the men who was to judge him in line with the Roman law at the time
was a man called Asterius, whose daughter was blind. He was supposed to have
prayed with and healed the young girl with such astonishing effect that Asterius
himself became Christian as a result.”
In the year 269 AD, Valentine was sentenced to a three part execution of a beating,
stoning, and finally decapitation all because of his stand for Christian marriage.
The story goes that the last words he wrote were in a note to Asterius’ daughter.
He inspired today’s romantic missives by signing it, “from your Valentine.”
“What Valentine means to me as a priest,” explains Father O’Gara, “is that there
comes a time where you have to lay your life upon the line for what you believe.
And with the power of the Holy Spirit we can do that -- even to the point of death.”
Valentine’s martyrdom has not gone unnoticed by the general public. In fact,
Whitefriars Street Church is one of three churches that claim to house the remains
of Valentine. Today, many people make the pilgrimage to the church to honor the
courage and memory of this Christian saint.
“Valentine has come to be known as the patron saint of lovers. Before you enter

into a Christian marriage you want some sense of God
in your life -- some great need of God in your life.
And we know, particularly in the modern world, many
people are meeting God through his Son, Jesus Christ.”
“If Valentine were here today, he would say to married couples that there comes a time where you’re
going to have to suffer. It’s not going to be easy to
maintain your commitment and your vows in marriage.
Don’t be surprised if the ‘gushing’ love that you have
for someone changes to something less “gushing” but
maybe much more mature. And the question is, is that
young person ready for that?”
“So on the day of the marriage they have to take
that into context,” Father O’Gara says. “Love -- human love and sexuality is wonderful, and blessed by
God -- but also the shadow of the cross. That’s what
Valentine means to me.”
Happy Valentine’s Day

State Representative Vincent Candelora
Connecticut’s Spending Cap
In 1992, the Connecticut voters,
by a margin of 4 to 1, approved an
amendment to the constitution to
implement a spending cap. The
purpose of the “spending cap” was
to limit the increase in year-to-year
spending by tying it to inflation and
economic growth. When the legislature had approved the $1 billion
income tax, this measure was meant to prevent runaway spending. The
cap served as a trade for the state taking more money from residents with
the income tax and to demonstrate that it would be more controlled in its
spending of those funds.
In order to bring force and effect to this constitutional amendment, the
General Assembly by a three-fifths affirmative vote was required to define
in statute the elements that contribute to the spending cap calculation, which
involves factoring in “increases in personal income”; “increases in inflation”; and “general budget expenditures”. Over twenty years has passed
and these words still remain undefined; and recently the Attorney General
ruled that without these definitions, the constitutional spending cap has no
force and effect.
During deficit mitigation this past month, Republicans insisted on a vote
to define the spending cap as part of our long term structural changes for
Connecticut. Public Act 15-1 fell short of creating such a definition, rather
the Democrats agreed to form a commission which will make recommendations and report back next year, after the election. We need to start the
conversation now.
As we approach the start of a new session, Republicans will renew this
debate. It is critical that we implement these definitions through the public
hearing and committee process. We need to begin the process of bringing
long term stability to Connecticut’s fiscal health. Without it, I fear that more
businesses like GE will leave. I am hopeful our legislators have learned
from this move and will take the important step in bringing meaning and
force to our constitutional spending cap.

“Please Don’t Feed the Storm Drain”
Storm drains are designed to only carry rainfall runoff from our streets
into our local waterways. Anything but water can contribute to water
pollution and drainage issues.
You can help avoid potential flooding by clearing leaves and brush in
the fall and snow and ice in the winter months from around storm drains.
Snow, ice and debris can interfere with drainage and clog storm drains
causing hazardous street flooding and freezing.

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE
By Attorney Marc P. Guertin
Many of my clients have what I would call an “If I die” attitude (at least
in the beginning of our relationship). They plan or don’t plan based on the
fact that they “might” die (that’s where the “if” comes in). The conversation
typically goes something like this: “Well, if I die I would like my house to
go to my daughter.” I chuckle a little bit and usually say something like,
“If you die… Oh, you’re going to die!!”
In a way we are no different than a carton of milk in that we all have
an “expiration date.” Ironically, many people plan more for the expiring
carton of milk than for their own expiration date. I have a few clients who
honestly believe they are not going to die at all. They seem to be quite
rational in all other ways but on the question of death they are swimming
in denial. My question to them usually is “If you are immortal, why have
you chosen New Haven county to live… forever?”
Death should not be dealt with as a distant abstract possibility, a dark
horse candidate or a long shot. Your estate plan should reflect what happens
when you die, not if you die.
So what happens if you like swimming in denial and you don’t make a
plan? Fear not, the State of Connecticut has a plan for you. Because you
left no direction, the State’s intestacy laws will dictate where your assets
go; and your assets may not go to who you think they would. Assuming
that you do not want the State of Connecticut to do the planning for you,
a properly drafted Last Will and Testament or a Trust will ensure that your
final wishes (regarding what happens to all of your stuff) are honored. It
is important to acknowledge that you have a finite amount of time in this
world and to plan accordingly.
Looking for a way to get started? Guertin and Guertin, LLC will be hosting a workshop on February 27 at 10am titled Coffee, Donuts and Trusts.

Carbon Monoxide, What you need to know:
Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas that interferes with
the delivery of oxygen in the blood to the rest of the body. It is produced by
incomplete combustion of fuels that include coal, wood, charcoal, natural
gas, propane, and fuel oil. Problems can arise as a result of improper installation, maintenance, or inadequate venation. The symptoms are sometimes
confused with the flu or food poisoning. Infants, elderly, pregnant women,
and people with heart or respiratory illness are particularly at high risk from
the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning. Nationally an estimated 300
people a year die as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning and thousands
of others end up in the emergency room.
What you need to do: Ensure that all fuel burning appliances are properly adjusted and maintained. Have annual inspections of heating systems,
chimney and flues. Never leave a car running in the garage. Install a carbon
monoxide detector near your sleeping area.
If your CO detector goes off, or if everyone in the house are experience
flue like symptoms that improve when you’re not home, call 911 and get
out of the house.
Fact 3: Abraham Lincoln is the only president in American history to
hold a patent.
Fact 4: Lincoln lost five separate elections before being elected
president.
Fact 5: Lincoln risked his life while fulfilling his duties as
commander-in-chief of the American military.
Fact 6: Lincoln violated some civil liberties to further the war effort.
Fact 7: Lincoln proclaimed all persons held as slaves in states of the
rebellion “forever free.”
Fact 9: Lincoln desired a forgiving Reconstruction.
Fact 10: Lincoln was not the only member of his administration to be
attacked on the night of April 14, 1865.

participated by leading
class presentations/interactive exhibits about
aspects of health and
wellness. Topics presented by
the students included healthy foods, the
benefits of water, hand-washing, germs, sleep, mindful breathing, yoga,
karate, physical activity, food groups, the dangers of sugar, and many
more. Students and classes presented and taught throughout the day to
visiting parents, community members, teachers and students; the North
Branford Community was impressed with how knowledgeable and articulate our
students were about their topics. Each student also left the event with their own bag including
items/information about wellness thanks to the support of the
PTO. The event was also supported by the JHS “Dream Team”,
which is a committed group of North Branford High School students that
serve as mentors to JHS K-2 students. Additionally, the Quinnipiac
University’s Women’s Track and Field Team participated in the event and
educated students on the benefits of physical activity through an
interactive activity. By the end of the day over 300 visitors came to the
event to celebrate wellness and learn from our students. The event was
organized by JHS First Grade teacher, Katie Ayotte and the school wellness
committee. The event is another way that the school continues to showcase
student learning and invite the community to partner with education.
Health and Wellness is certainly alive on North Branford and at Jerome

PreSchool Role Model Screening
February 19, 2016
Project PRIDE is a special education preschool located at Jerome Harrison School, North Branford, CT. The program incorporates children
without disabilities to model appropriate social, language and play skills
within preschool activities. This program meets four days a week (Monday through Thursday) with two sessions (morning 9:00-11:30, afternoon
12:45-3:15). The program is seeking three and four-year-old children with
typically-developing skills to serve as role models in our classes for the
2016-2017 school year.
To be enrolled as a role model peer, children must pass a preschool screening which assesses cognitive, speech-language, motor and social skills. Role
model peers must be toilet trained. If parents are interested, please contact
Mrs. Kohler at 203-484-1235, to schedule a screening appointment. The
screening will take approximately 30 minutes.
The names of children who pass the screening will be placed in a lottery
that will take place in February or as soon as enough candidates have applied. Parents will be notified by phone in February if their child is selected.
Children who are selected will participate at no cost. However, transportation must be provided by the parent.
