New Historical Society
The Historical Society of Toronto,
Ohio, is in its infancy. A group of
people are acting on the need to preserve our heritage.
Carolyn Motter Walker ‘64 recently
spoke to the chamber of commerce
about the historical society and how
preserving and interpreting our past
will help the future of Toronto.
“History is lifeless if you don’t have
stories,” said Walker, adding she is
seeking to preserve the city’s past
through those who lived it. “While
there are several books written about
Toronto’s early beginnings, there is
not much written about the 1940’s,
1950’s and 1960’s. People living during those eras are still with us today,
but as the months go by, we see
memories of these times and events
leaving us.”
The ultimate goal of the historical
society is to open a museum in
Toronto. The history of Toronto
really encumbers all of northern Jefferson County. A lot of Toronto artifacts in homes around the area are
lost, destroyed or sold on eBay as
people die or relocate. We need to
protect these items and, more importantly, we also need to interpret and
preserve the memories of our citizens
with written accounts.
The organization is supported by the
Chamber of Commerce, Mayor John
Geddis and the Jefferson County Genealogical Society. Genealogy
research has become big business in
America. People researching their
family histories are interested in

Toronto Chamber Banquet Honors Veterans
Local veterans, citizen, business and
organization of the year were honored during the annual chamber
banquet.
The banquet and awards presentation went beyond the usual this year
as veterans from all eras were honored during a special ceremony,
after the awarding of citizen of the
year to city resident, Bill Hagy
(father of Karen Hagy Mortland ‘72,
Tom ‘’75 and Ken ‘80); organization
of the year to the Toronto American
Legion Post 86 and Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post 6906; and business of the year to Margaret’s Café,
owned by Terry and Karen Cologne
Scalley ‘68/69. Lifetime achievement awards were presented to four
World War II veterans; including
Edward Rock ‘37, Ted Troski ‘37,
Nick Mihalik ‘41 and Joseph
Mulholland.
The evening also included speeches
by U.S. Representative Charlie Wilson and state Senator, Jason Wilson,
patriotic songs by Jefferson County
Commissioner, Dr. Thomas Graham
‘73 and Rich Coburn ‘99 , and a special recognition of all local World
War II veterans in attendance at the
event.
Charlie Wilson said he was impressed with the Gem city’s devotion
to its veterans and the ceremony.
“Toronto gets it. This is as good as
I’ve ever seen. It makes you proud
to be an American.” Wilson went on
to praise the men and women who
fought in World War II as the greatest generation, and that “America is
what it is because of our World War
II veterans. “ Wilson also paid tribute to Toronto natives Nathaniel
Rock ‘97, who was killed in battle in
Iraq three years ago, and Nathan

Dairy Dinor
Olive Kinkade Symons ‘35 said
goodbye to her beloved Gem City
this past March as she moved to
Kent, Ohio, to be nearer to her son,
Richard ‘67. “Tillie” as she was
known to the many she served during the 1950’s, celebrated her ninetieth birthday in April. She made an
indelible impression on longtime
residents, who still remember her as
the operator of the former Dairy
Dinor on North Fourth Street. She
leased the dinor and was the sole
operator, cook, dishwasher and waitress of the new business which
boasted twelve stools and four
booths.
She recently reflected on the many
happy memories and good times she
shared with those who frequented
the dinor. “Hamburgers were a
quarter then,” she said. “I sold footlong hot dogs for 20 cents. I made
tons of ice cream. I hated ice
cream.” But her customers loved it,
and the business thrived through a
combination of workers constructing
the Sammis power plant, students
from Toronto High School and those
traveling what was then State Route
7. Her mother, Florence Kinkade,
helped her with the morning breakfast shift which was always a busy,
hectic part of the day. She said people ask her if she still makes chili
liked she use to serve at the dinor”
Good luck to you, Tillie, as you start
another chapter in your life. Thanks
for all the memories—KnighTimes
Staff.

by the gathering.
The Rev. Mike Bongart, Vietnam
veteran and pastor of the Toronto
First Presbyterian Church, along
with Bob Cowles, Legion Post 86

veterans who were prisoners of war
or were missing in action. Bongart
described the empty chair and place
setting at a small round table. “The
chair is empty, they are not here.”
