Teacher’s notes
This pack of documents and transcripts will allow you to prepare your students for the videoconference /
virtual classroom session. It is vital that all students complete the preparatory work beforehand, so that they
are fully prepared for the session.
This videoconference introduces pupils to Noor Inayat Khan, a member of the Special Operations Executive
during the Second World War. Pupils will develop their understanding of the role of the SOE, as well as the
experiences of Noor Khan and the betrayal that led to her arrest. During the videoconference, pupils will be
encouraged to answer Noor Khan’s questions about their own SOE training as ‘trainee agents’. They will also
have the opportunity to ask Noor about her experiences as an agent.
Preparation activity
In preparation for this session, each student will need to complete the following activities:
• Watch a short film clip of Noor Khan talking about wireless training (http://www.youtube.com/
watch?v=dVOi3RfvIMk), and examine documents HS 7/55, INF 2/488 and INF 3/502 to complete the
‘Trainee Agent Notebook’.
• Find out more about Noor Khan by examining all the documents in this pack to complete the ‘Who was
Noor Khan?’ worksheet.
Background Information
Noor Inayat Khan was born in Moscow in 1914 to an American mother and Indian father. Her family moved
around a lot when she was a child; first to London and then to Paris where she was educated at the Sorbonne
and later became an author of children’s stories. In 1940 Noor Khan escaped to England after France fell to the
Nazis, and joined the Womens Auxiliary Airforce. She joined the Special Operations Executive in 1942, and was
the first woman to be sent to France to work as a wireless operator. At this point, she had not completed her
training and some in SOE had doubts about her suitability as an agent.
Noor Khan joined the Prosper network. Shortly after her arrival in Paris, the network collapsed and key
members were arrested. She asked to continue to work in France transmitting her wireless messages, in spite
of the danger this placed her in. In October 1943, she was betrayed by a Frenchwoman and captured by
the Gestapo. She had unwisely kept a notebook of all the messages that she had sent, which the Nazis were
then able to use along with her radio, to continue to transmit to London. They tricked London into sending a
number of new agents to France, straight into the hands of the waiting Gestapo.
Noor Khan was sent to Pforzheim Prison in Germany and refused to reveal any further information to the
Nazis. In September 1944, she was transported to Dachau Concentration Camp and executed on the 13th
September.
Noor Khan was posthumously awarded the George Cross in 1949. Maurice Buckmaster, Head of F Section in
the SOE, wrote about her ‘A most brave and touchingly keen girl. She was determined to do her bit to hit the
Germans, and poor girl, she has.’

Study the two paintings of SOE agents in action (INF 3/488, INF 3/502).
What types of things do these paintings show SOE agents doing?
Why do SOE agents need to carry out these activities? How does it help our country during
the war?
Good luck with your training!
