NEWSLETTER
From The Principal
Dear Parents, Friends and Students,
Students and staff from Nyangatjatjara College in Yulara and Docker River in the Northern
Territory are currently visiting us as part of our College Immersion Program. Each year our Year 11
students visit the College in Yulara in Term 4 as our other immersion
group travel to St Joseph’s College, Mabiri in Bougainville.
The immersion program at Pagewood is centered on learning and
spiritual formation. The students travelling to Bougainville are hosted
by a very Marist community at St Joseph’s. They pray and sing with the
Mabiri community as they undertake their own studies and assist with
the learning of the students in that community.
The boys travelling to Yulara experience a strong sense of Aboriginal
Spirituality, with its connection to nature, land and family. Again
learning provides the basis of the immersion with the spiritual
experience providing the context.
Having travelled to both communities I sense a very strong connection
between my Catholic faith, Aboriginal Spirituality and the stories of the Dreamtime.
The College staff last week participated in a Spirituality Day which included an Aboriginal walking
tour of La Perouse followed by Mass, celebrated by Father John Hayes and a talk by Auntie Elsie
Heiss, at the Reconciliation Church.
Both Father John and Auntie Elsie impressed upon us the need for connectedness. Connectedness
to one another, to Our God and to nature. We were encouraged to nurture our spirit of self, of
family and of others.
So this week at school, as we witness the excited faces of the fellas from Yulara as they go about
their learning in Pagewood classrooms and experience the sights of Sydney, we give thanks to Our
Father for connecting us with this community; for providing us with the richness of this
relationship and the benefits that it provides both Colleges.
Aboriginal Our Father
You are Our Father, you live in heaven We talk to you, Father you are good (repeat)
We believe your Word Father We your children, give us bread today (repeat)
We have done wrong, we are sorry Help us Father not to sin again (repeat)
Others have done wrong to us And we are sorry for them, Father today (repeat)
Stop us from doing wrong, Father Save us all from the evil one (repeat)
You are Our Father, you live in heaven We talk to you, Father you are good (repeat)

MADIGAN HOUSE NEWS
As part of our community celebration of Champagnat Day, the Madigan
House chose to support the charity “Youth Off The Streets”. This charity, run
by Father Chris Riley, made us all in Madigan reflect on how fortunate our
lives are.
The boys were introduced to the aims of this charity in our House Group
Meeting and were clearly moved by the deprivation and sadness of the lives of
the children Father Chris helps.
The boys gave generously to assist the “Youth Off The Streets” fund raising
goals. We were asked to donate items that the children could take to school –
things we take for granted, such as basic stationery items and non-perishable
foods. The Madigan boys filled the large yellow tubs left in House Groups with
stationery, pens, post it notes, erasers, books and pencil cases, non -perishable
foods that the children can take to school for recess and lunch such as Up & Go’s,
muesli bars, poppers, milo tins etc. The tubs were overflowing with donations for
YOTS.
These items will help make a difference to the over 70,000 children who sleep on the streets. What broke our hearts and helped
motivate our boys was the fact that 75% of the children who sleep on the streets attend some sort of schooling each day with no
books, no stationery, no lunch or snacks.
On Champagnat Day, Teresa Tree, who works for YOTS came in and spoke to our boys about their
organisation and how they help so many under privileged kids. The facts and statistics, the sheer
number of children who live in such horrific conditions was very confronting for both staff and
students.
We were able to present to Teresa many large bags of stationery and non-perishable foods and she
was extremely grateful that other young people were so willing to help. She told the boys that they
really said had no idea of
how the donations will
make a difference to so
many children.
The Madigan boys by their generosity and
compassion demonstrated the values and qualities of
Marcellin Champagnat. It was a heartening as
Madigan House Coordinator, to see the boys support
such a worthy cause with great spirit and genuineness.
A huge thank you to all the Madigan boys and their
House Group teachers who encouraged the boys and
also to the staff of Pagewood who donated to our
worthy cause.
Melissa Daley, Madigan House Coordinator

FROM THE LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT
il Capitano wants a wife!
Once again, the Melbourne based company, Cultural Infusion, visited our school, performing for the Year 8 Italian
classes.
The show was called “il Capitano”, one of the main “stock” characters in Commedia dell’Arte, a very early form of
improvised theatre which started in Italy in the 16th century and quickly spread through Europe.
It is popular because although the characters are mainly stereotypes, the scenarios are unscripted and very funny.
In this episode, the cowardly army captain wants to get married and will stop at nothing to get his girl!
The interactive and unpredictable nature of the performance kept the Year 8 boys on their toes and ready to take part.
Ms Nigro, Italian Teacher
CONGRATULATIONS!
I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Kane Pickard from Year 9 who has recently
been sponsored by Quiksilver for his talent in the sport of Surfing. I asked Kane some
questions about his passion for surfing and how Quiksilver’s newest acquisition.
Q. How long have you been Surfing for?
Kane: I have been surfing since I was around 3 years old. My dad would push me into waves on his old
boards, but I didn't properly get into it until I was 11.
Q. Who inspired you to start Surfing?
Kane: The people who inspired me to surf were those who don't compete in competitions much, but instead
are subjects for surf documentaries. These people I think enhance the sport in innovative ways by doing
different manoeuvres like airs.
Kane Pickard Year 9
Q. How did your sponsorship with Quiksilver come about?
Kane: I got sponsored by Quiksilver through an email from the manager of the Quiksilver surf team, asking me if I was interested in a
sponsorship. My surf coach from Port Macquarie was helping set this up over the last year or so.
Q. Where is your favourite place to surf?
Kane: My favourite place to surf would be Indonesia. I have been there about 6 times before and I like the warm water and reef breaks. I am planning
to go there in August.
Q. If you have any advice for someone who wants to pursue a Surfing career, what
would you tell them?
Kane: To surf as often as you can. Practice things you think you are not very good at but also remember to
enjoy it.
Kane will be competing in the Skullcandy Oz Grom Comp in Lennox Head-Ballina during
the first week of the school holidays. The Pagewood community wishes Kane all the best in
his upcoming competition.

HOUSTON HOUSE NEWS
On Champagnat Day the Houston House competed in the
inaugural ‘Houston Amazing Race’ to raise funds for Marist
Asia Pacific Solidarity’s ‘One step at a time” campaign.
Students were asked to make gold coin donations and
purchase pizzas to support fellow Marist schools in regions
such as Bougainville, Fiji, India and Samoa.
House Groups competed against one another through a series
of stages that included riddles, word puzzles, physical obstacles
and the much coveted eating relay. Here students had to
consume tim tams covered in vegemite, dry weetbix and the
very HOT birdseye chili. The race was completed by a 7 team
Tug-of-war which was won by the victorious Houston 5 team.
A great day had by all with over $300 raised for our charity.
Thanks to all staff and students from Houston for your
ongoing generosity.

HAYES HOUSE NEWS
Hayes students celebrated Champagnat
Day with an inter House challenge of
soccer, touch and paper plane making.
Boys applied their skills over the
various games in what was a highly
competitive tussle. Hayes 3, 6 and 7
were the winners on the day and were
rewarded with drink bottles, high
bounce balls and mini footballs as
prizes. All proceeds raised from the day
will go towards Marist Youth Care,
supporting homeless and disadvantaged
young people.

History Teachers Association Study Day
On Saturday the 11th of June, while the rest of the 2016 cohort were enjoying the long weekend, Year 12 Ancient
History students were at Sydney University, attending the annual History Teachers Association Study Day.
The day involved a series of Ancient History lectures and practical workshops run by experienced university lecturers
and HSC markers. The seminars provided students with an invaluable opportunity to learn from experts who
provided new perspectives relating to the eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 79AD, established new and conflicting
arguments about the Julio-Claudian Period and
presented the boys with a wide-range of new
sources to be used in their writing.
In true fashion and what is testament to the
level of maturity and collegiality exhibited daily
by these students, the boys created their own
timetable for the day, splitting up and attending
different lectures so they could maximise their
access to the content presented.
Overall, the day was a tremendous success and
helped to consolidate and affirm much of the
hard work already undertaken by the Ancient
History cohort.

FROM THE SENIOR SCHOOL LEARNING COORDINATOR
On Tuesday 14th June Dr Prue Salter from Enhanced Learning Educational Services (www.enhanced-learning.net) ran
a study skills session with Year 11 and 12 students, building on the work done with the boys in previous years.
The session focused on helping students identify changes and improvements they could make to their approach to
their studies in order to maximise their results in their final years of school.
In the session students looked at advanced research about the brain and how that could be used to make their study
more effective. The focus on the session was looking ahead to the busy examination periods and how students can
ensure they are well-prepared. Steps to make effective study notes were highlighted and students also examined the
study techniques they traditionally used, exploring new techniques they could try this year. The students also
discussed how much time they should allocate to school- work during term time (2-3 hours per night) and the type of
independent learning they should consistently be doing throughout the year.
Parents can also find extra study skills tips on the following website: http://studyskillstoptipsparents.com/.
If you have any questions regarding study skills or would like to know how you can best support your son
academically throughout the final stages of his learning please contact Mr Ferry at the College.

MCC Sport
The MCC Winter competition continued a fortnight ago with fixtures against Marist College Kogarah. This round
was also named Champagnat Round as Marist schools played against each other to mark the celebration of the
Champagnat feast day only a few days later. While it was a very successful day for Rugby League teams our Football
teams found the going a little tougher in what is traditionally a very competitive round in the winter season.
In Rugby League it was a frustrating day for our A Grade team as they were decimated prior to kick off with a
number of boys succumbing to injury. Subsequently a small group of players were called up from the B Grade team,
and with Pagewood taking the field with very few reserves and a wealth of experience missing, it was always going to
be a struggle. In the end the score line reflected this leaving the team in fourth spot on the ladder needing to win one
of their last two to make the semi-finals. B Grade were involved in a tough, tight, low-scoring contest with only three
tries being scored in the match and no goals kicked. Thankfully it was Pagewood who scored two of these tries
leading to a narrow 8-4 victory which was enough to keep the team unbeaten and in second spot on the ladder, only
one point behind Randwick in what is turning out to be a memorable season. The Under 15’s enjoyed the bye while
the Under 14’s got their campaign back on track following their loss against Ryde with an emphatic 50-6 victory,
keeping them in equal second spot on the ladder and only one win behind the leaders. The 13A’s were involved in a
very exciting game with the result being decided after the siren as goal kicker Harrison Marsh piloted one through
the posts to lead the black and gold to a narrow two point victory. This was a very important result in the context of
the season with the boys now in with a good shot of making the semi-finals. The 13B’s yet again completed a shut
out of their opposition playing very impressively to win 38-0, and in the process catapulted themselves to the top of
the ladder as they continue their march toward the Grand Final and a defence of the title won by our 13B’s in 2015.
In Football our A Grade team came up against a Kogarah outfit who were undefeated, having won four out of four
and with a defence that had only conceded two goals all season. Pagewood tried their very best but found the gulf in
class a little too great to handle as Kogarah stamped their dominance on the match from the outset. B Grade also
came up against a team sitting pretty at the top of the ladder and despite conceding early the team fought valiantly to
work themselves back in the game. The depth of quality in the Kogarah Football ranks is well known, especially in
the Opens, and in the end it proved too much for our boys that afternoon. The Under 15’s played well early in their
match, keeping the game close as goal keeper Alex Danilatos did his very best to keep the opposition at bay. As has
been the case too often this season, however, a flurry of goals in the second half blew the score line out. The Under
14’s started strongly scoring a goal early as they dominated their opponents. The lead was taken into half time but,
just as they had done earlier in the season against Lewisham, it was relinquished as Kogarah scored an equaliser, and
then a winner, to snatch the three competition points and leave our boys undeservedly with nothing. Wins in their
final two games, however, should be enough to see this team make the semi-finals so plenty still to play for. The
13A’s also were up 1-0 in their game, scoring early as they worked really well together to frustrate their opponents. A
change in momentum midway through the first half, however, saw Kogarah put three into the Pagewood net by half
time to take a healthy lead which they maintained for the rest of the match. The loss leaves the team needing to win
their last two matches to have any chance of making the semi-finals. Finally the 13B’s were brave in their match with
the final score line not a true reflection of the closeness of the match. While Kogarah started on fire scoring three in
quick time, Pagewood were able to pull one back right on the stroke of half time to reduce the margin. The break
seemed to halt our momentum though as Kogarah scored two early goals in the second half to drive home their
advantage, but a spirited effort from the boys nonetheless.

Representative Touch
Congratulations to Zac Pitscheider
(Year 12), Mitchell Pitscheider and
Bailey Collins (Year 10) who were
members of the MCC Opens
Touch Football team that
participated at the NSWCCC
selection trials at Dubbo last week.
The team only had eight players
available with a number pulling out
at the last minute, however, the
team overcame this adversity well
as they went on to win four of
their six matches. Victories came
against Canberra Goulburn (4-0),
Wagga (2-1), Armidale (8-0) and
Lismore (4-3) while losses were
against Maitland-Newcastle (1-3)
and MCS (1-5). All three boys
played starring roles and
represented the MCC Association
well, especially given the team was
down on troops. Well done to all
three boys!
Representative Cross Country
Good luck to Oliver Jones (Year 8), Brooklyn Norton (Year 9) and
Anthony Gutierrez (Year 10) who will be representing the MCC Cross
Country team at the NSWCCC Cross Country Championships at
Homebush this Friday. Details of their performances will be included in
the final newsletter of the term.
Representative Rugby League
Congratulations to Ned Hicks (Year 9), Cameron Winder and Zach Maling
(Year 8) who represented the Under 14 Junior Bunnies in Smithtown and
Forster over the long weekend. The team defeated Smithtown Group 2
convincingly 48-0, and Forster/Tuncurry Group 3 18-12. All three boys
played exceptionally well. Special mention goes to Zach Kambos (Year 9)
who made the squad though unfortunately could not play due to injury,
but did find the time to be there to support his teammates. Well done boys
and we look forward to your performances against teams from Sydney
coming up.

College Athletics Carnival
A reminder to all that the College Athletics
Carnival for 2016 will be held next Friday 24th
June (Week 9) at Hensley Athletics Field in
Pagewood. This is a compulsory College
event and students are expected to attend.
Boys are to meet at the venue at 8.30am for
roll call unless competing in one of the earlier
Championship events commencing at
8.00am. The Carnival will conclude at
approximately 2.30pm. All students will
receive an information note this week with
more specific details regarding the event. The
note can also be viewed in the Sport section
of the College website. Following on from
the successful Swimming Carnival held at the
start of the year it promises to be another
wonderful event. Parents of course are
welcome to come along and support their
child on the day.
Internal Sport
As House and Free Choice commitments for
Term 2 come to end students are encouraged
to ensure they continue to follow teacher’s
instructions, enjoy their Sport and finish the
term on a positive note. As always there is a
tendency for students to become a little more
carefree in their behaviour leading up to the
holiday period. Hopefully there will be very
few episodes of this occurring.
Aside from this it has been great to see our
non-MCC students immersing themselves in
the Sporting life of the College and every
effort will be made to include photos of these
boys in the final edition of the newsletter for
the term in week 10.
All students in Years 9, 10 and 11 will receive
via email a Free Choice options form in the
coming days. Boys are encouraged to fill this
form out quickly and accurately so it will be
possible for Sport to commence without any
hesitation at the start of Term 3.
Community Service
Last Tuesday 7th June a group of 32 students from the College,
mainly from Year 11 along with a few from Year 12, assisted at
the Eastern Region Football Gala Day held at Heffron Park,
Maroubra. The day involved approximately 800 primary students
from 40 primary schools in the local area participating in a round
robin Football tournament in which the focus was not on
winning, but on participation and enjoyment.
The boys who generously volunteered their time to help on the
day are currently studying Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation (SLR)
and Fitness Studies, and the day was a wonderful opportunity for
these students to gain great experience in the management of
games, assist the community in a sporting context, and allow the
Fitness Studies students to accumulate some Work Placement
hours.
Throughout the day the Pagewood boys were required to referee
Football games being played by teams of girls and boys. The boys
paired themselves up with each couple being required to referee
on one of the 16 fields, taking it in turns to officiate the match.
An intricate knowledge of the rules was not essential which
meant that a greater number of our students could be involved
regardless of their sporting background. Event organiser Sasha
Juric was very grateful and appreciative of the school and the
students’ support, describing the boys as “professional” in their
handling of the matches.
The College has assisted the Eastern Region at a number of
sporting events in the past including Swimming and Athletics
carnivals, and hopefully this will form a part of a long and strong
relationship between the College and the Association for many
years to come.
Each boy received a Certificate of Participation for their
involvement on the day and were also treated to a Subway lunch
to help keep their energy levels up. Well done to all these
students on representing the College so magnificently.
Let us Know!
If you have news of sporting success achieved by any of our students outside of the College’s own sport program
please do not hesitate to email this information to myself at [email protected]. A lot of
achievements by our boys go unnoticed when they deserve to be made aware to the College community. Please send
