Step Five: Add the Borders Step Six
Step Four: Assemble the Quilt R1 A) Sew a sashing strip to the right side of the first five pinwheel blocks in each row. Press seams toward sashing. Sew the blocks together in rows. R2 B) Next, on your design surface, arrange the horizontal sashing strips and cornerstones under Block Rows 1-7. Important: the cornerstone fabric must match the fabrics that form the pinwheel in the four adjoining blocks to maintain the pinwheel illusion. See Diagram 3. Sew the horizontal sashing/cornerstone strips. Press the seams towards the sashing. R3 R4 C) Sew the sashing rows to the block row above, matching the cornerstones to the vertical sashing. Sew the rows together. R5 Step Five: Add the Borders R6 Pinwheel Sunriseās borders are made up of three fabric strips. For the top, bottom and side borders, match the center points of each strip, then sew the three fabrics together as shown in Diagram 4. (The ends will not be even.) For your top and bottom borders, press seams toward middle strip; for side borders, press seams away from middle strip. R7 R8 Diagram 3: Assembling the Quilt Lay your top border horizontally across the center of your quilt, matching quilt center to border center. Using a right-angle triangle, mark the miter on both ends of your border as shown. (The wide border will always be the longest!) Repeat for the bottom border. Repeat the process for your side borders, placing the borders vertically along the quilt. Pin a border to the quilt, matching the center and ends, and easing fullness as necessary. Sew the border to the quilt, stopping and starting 1/4" from the edges. Repeat for remaining borders. Sew the miters at each corner, beginning at the inside seam and sewing to the outer edge of the border. Step Six: Finish the Quilt Layer the quilt as follows: backing (wrong side up), batting, quilt top (right side up). Baste layers together. Quilt as desired. When quilting is completed, trim backing and batting even with edges of quilt top. Make binding strips using reserved Fabric 27 and bind using your favorite binding method.
