Annual report
fiscal year 2015
Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends,
This is an exciting time to be part of the St. Mary’s Ryken community. This year we
celebrate our 35th graduating class! Our annual report is my opportunity to reflect
on the previous school year and look ahead with optimism and hope to the upcoming
year. It’s also an exciting time to celebrate the accomplishments of our recent graduates.
Did you know? The Class of 2015:
• completed over 15,000 service hours
• was awarded over $17 million in college scholarships
• earned the highest average SAT scores in the tri-county area
• received acceptance to 189 colleges and universities
We are very proud of their achievements and wish them continued success through their young-adult lives.
At SMR, we continue to find ways to improve and update our campus, including becoming a fully Wi-Fi-enabled
campus and installing a robust campus security system. The security system includes an alert function to quickly
communicate to individual classrooms or the principal’s office, the ability to broadcast overhead announcements
and a badge entry system. We also expanded our media center to create a learning commons that includes study,
research, collaboration and meeting spaces for students. The casual areas of the center encourage camaraderie among
our students.
As you know, the foundation of our school is centered on our academic excellence, strong spiritual development
and the leadership within our faculty and the students themselves. As the 2015–16 school year begins, we will focus
on the Xaverian Brothers’ very important value of trust. This theme will provide a framework to strengthen communications among the faculty and staff, help support teacher-student relationships and also provide guidance with
our students’ relationships with God. With the focus on trust, we also aim to emphasize the importance of trust in
our students’ high school careers and beyond — especially as it pertains to our evolving high-tech world and their
family and personal relationships.
st. mary’s ryken mission statement

2015–16 Annual Fund
What is the SMR Annual Fund?
The SMR Annual Fund helps to fill the annual funding
“gap” between tuition and the actual cost of educating
a student.
Did you know? In 2014–15, the per-student gap
at SMR was $2,857.
Almost all Catholic high schools have a gap, which is
mainly due to our desire to keep tuition as affordable as
possible for all families.
Help support the next 35 years!
Each year, we ask all members of the SMR community
to support our students and our mission by committing
to donate to the Annual Fund. Each donation — from
parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty/staff and community
members — strengthens our efforts to provide a premier
college preparatory Catholic education to our students.
Over 700 students per year are counting on us!
How will your gifts to the SMR Annual
Fund impact our school and our students?
The Annual Fund is used exclusively for the current
year’s operating costs such as:
• Tuition assistance
• Fine arts programs
• Academic programs
• Campus ministry programs
• Science and technology programs
• Athletic programs
• Security and facilities maintenance
• Faculty and staff professional development
Our Annual Fund is a yearlong appeal that forms
the cornerstone of all of our fundraising activities and
gives everyone in the school community an opportunity
to contribute.
“As a SMR alum and now a SMR parent, I am
happy to support the SMR Annual Fund.
It is my small way of saying “Thank You”
to SMR for providing a “world-class”
education to my daughters.”
— John Collins, SMR Class of ’88
By contributing to
the SMR Annual Fund,
you are helping us:
• Meet mission-critical
operating costs
• Provide tuition assistance for those families in
the greatest need
• Build revenue for development of new programs
• Improve our classroom and athletic facilities
Please visit our website to give online at smrhs.org/giving
or return the envelope in this magazine, including your
gift of support and updated contact information, to St.
Mary’s Ryken.
The Annual Fund is the cornerstone of our
annual fundraising efforts, and we are counting
on your support!
FAST FACT
39% of students receive
financial aid from SMR.

Share of St. Mary’s. He and his wife, Margaret, were part
of a missionary team that for 20 years provided medical

achievement, service to the community and a need for
financial assistance.
The John T. Buffington Scholarship
Established by the Buffington family — wife Carolyn,
daughters Kathleen ’85 and Karen ’91 and son, Sean ’87
— in memory of their husband and father, Jack, a
passionate advocate for education and a friend and
defender of young people. Mr. Buffington devoted
his life to the children and young adults of Southern
Maryland. He was taken from his family and the
community he served far too early. This scholarship
stands as a permanent monument to his memory and
the causes he fought for.
The Crossroads Scholarship
Established by alumni Matthew ’00 and Britt Farrall ’00
Murphy, who met at St. Mary’s Ryken. For both, their
SMR experience changed the trajectory of their lives
through the forming of lifelong friendships, fostering
of spiritual beliefs, and forming one’s true character.
The scholarship will be awarded to students with a strong
academic background to provide them the opportunity to
build a solid foundation at this crossroads in their lives.

St. Mary’s
Ryken Legacy
Society
The members of this giving society seek to
ensure the continuation of Catholic education
in Southern Maryland through a legacy gift to
St. Mary’s Ryken.
Members:
Mr. Thomas and Mrs. Carla Cavanaugh
Mr. John (’56) and Mrs. Annette Madel
Mr. Leonard (’74) and Mrs. Suzanne Rale
Mr. Joseph and Mrs. Mary Lynn Stone, Jr.
Legacy, or planned, gifts hold a variety of benefits for the donors. With a planned gift to
St. Mary’s Ryken, you can establish a named student scholarship, provide a gift to the
SMR Annual Fund, or leave a gift to a specific department or program.
The easiest and most common way of making a planned gift is through
a bequest in your will, but there are a variety of other ways as well.
For more information, please contact 301-373-4182 or [email protected].
