“ You can do nothing with

their confidence and love by
bringing them into touch with
yourself, by breaking through
all the hindrances that keep

Congratulations to the Class of 2014!
Graduation Remarks from
President Gordon Oliver
(Edited from full original speech)
Congratulations to the Class of 2014.
On behalf of our office of advancement and alumni relations I welcome you to the Saint John’s
Alumni Association.
You are our first class to complete a full academic year at our new campus. You received offers
of over $4.5 million in college scholarship offers. This averages out to an impressive $68,000
per student. Some of you will be attending outstanding public institutions of higher learning and
some of you outstanding private ones.
Andrew Riley receives his diploma from
Mr. Gordon Oliver during the 2014
Commencement Ceremony
Before I continue I want to thank the members of our Board of Directors for their dynamic
vision and exceptional stewardship of our school. Thank you!
I also want to recognize our Principal Mr. Minsker and our faculty and staff whose unwavering
commitment to our students and to a Christ centered Catholic education remains unsurpassed.
A caring, committed, and competent faculty, staff, and coaches are key to our schools success.
I would also like to acknowledge Mrs. Pieklo for her 32 years of service to Saint John’s.
A special welcome to the many grandparents and relatives of our graduates who are with us this afternoon to share in this special occasion.
To the parents of our graduates: Thank you for entrusting your son’s and daughter’s secondary education to Saint John’s.
To the class of 2014: You are tomorrow’s leaders. I do not know what that will mean for each one of you. But I do know that you will need
to embrace and continue to develop the leadership skills you learned here at Saint John’s that will guide our nation forward. You will be
tasked with solving challenges that my generation of baby boomers have been unable to resolve. I hope and trust that the decisions you
make will be prudent and just; informed by Roman Catholic moral, and ethical teachings -- to always do the right thing when it may not be
the popular thing!
Doing the right thing and working together collaboratively to solve problems and implement positive outcomes has been a hallmark of our
school’s 185 year success story:
Teachers and students, administration and board, the Church religious as well as our parents and alumni collectively working together in
unison. Another word for this is of course team work. Teamwork and collegiality are characteristics not only of the class of 2014 but is also
representative of the spirit and backbone of the broader Saint John’s community. We know that great things can be accomplished with a
unified vision and action.

Psalm 133 says “How good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity.”
Richard Hassett ’67, Treasurer
The notion of “Unity” as a means of achieving success and overcoming obstacles is a recurring theme in history. It is found not only in
sacred scripture but in the ancient texts and writings of many cultures.
Pam Zusi, Secretary
Kathleen Costlow D’Amore
Patrick Crowley
In the vignette in Tales from Jakata, retold in the Knights to Christ booklet published by the Knight’s of Columbus whose hallmarks are
Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism, a fable is recited under the auspices of the “Unity.”
The story begins that ages ago a flock of a thousand quails lived together in a forest in India. They would have been happy, but they were
in great dread of their enemy, the quail hunter.
Kateri Delaney ‘74
He would trick them by mocking their call and then capturing them with a great net.

The wise quail said, “Brothers” when the fowler throws his net over us, let each one put his head through a mesh in the net and then we
will all lift up together and fly away with it!
The next day the fowler threw his net, and the birds escaped as they had planned. This continued for many days and the fowler’s wife
grew very angry. He explained “the trouble is that all the birds are working together and helping one another.”
A few days later, one of the quails accidentally trod on the head of one of his brothers. Then they began to argue about who was lifting
most of the weight of the nets. The fowler saw his chance and cast his net over the quails once more. They were still boasting and
quarreling, forgetting to work the net together. So the hunter lifted the net and took his catch home.
The point of this story is of course “Unity” through teamwork and cooperation triumph. Without it there can be paralysis and
divisiveness.
At last Sunday’s Athletic banquet we bore witness to “Unity” in action when we learned about the amazing feats and accomplishments of
our spring athletic teams. While we had many outstanding individual athletic efforts it takes many members who don’t care who gets the
credit to be championship team material.
If I may, I would like to digress for a brief moment to recognize our baseball team who on Tuesday won the conference championship.
Because the championship game was played after last Sunday’s sports banquet due to make up games because of all the rain we’ve
had the school did not get a chance to recognize their accomplishment. Two of our graduates were on that team: Jonathon Mahalchick
and Maciah Thomas. I would like Jonathon and Maciah to please stand up and be recognized. It is the baseball team’s third conference
championship in four years. Congratulations!
Also, because of the rains, members of the tennis team will not be able to complete their matches until next Tuesday.
Michael Schultz, Director of
Enrollment Management
Kristi Hallman, Counselor
Tom Whedbee, Counselor
Laurie Orlowski, Business Manager
I would like to recognize Aric Bosser who will be competing in number one singles and Madi Middeke competing in number two singles.
I ask that Aric and Madi please stand up and be recognized.
Good luck next Tuesday.
In concluding my remarks on the theme of “Unity” I would like to quote His Holiness Pope Francis who said in an address to Brazil’s
Bishops in July 2013 on the Church as a “Unity of Diversity” that the Church needs a network of regional testimonies which speak the
same language and in every place not unanimity but true unity in the richness of diversity.
Leanne Elsemore, Director of
Technology
In closing I want to wish the class of 2014 all the best for the future, at your respective colleges and universities, in your choice of careers,
and beyond.
Dawn Miller, Director of
Campus Ministry
Congratulations, good luck, and God Bless each one of you!

As we approach the second anniversary of our new campus in Buckeystown, I sometimes find myself asking the upperclassmen what
they miss about “old Prospect Hall.” More often than not, it seems that the students are at a loss for words, unable to provide a quick
and immediate response. Occasionally I hear “Agnes” or “the Mansion” but for the most par t, the students don’t vocalize any resounding
memories. Perhaps this is due to the idea (from writer William Gibson) that “Time moves in one direction, memory in another.”
Saint John’s is moving forward in the right direction, with an emphasis on enhancing our curriculum/course offerings and expanding
services for students. In regards to the curriculum, we are offering more AP courses than ever before: a total of 16 AP classes. These
are taught by our talented faculty, all of whom have attended College Board workshops. Looking ahead, we anticipate the addition of
two more AP courses in the 2015-2016 school year including Music Theory and Computer Science. We continue to exceed Common
Core standards in every subject area; this is monitored by our new Curriculum Coordinator, Mr. Tim Van Schaick. In conjunction with
our Academic Council, Mr. Van is working with teachers to document and ensure that we are surpassing Common Core.
In regards to expanding services for our students, we are thrilled to unveil the Kane Program this year : a program that gives suppor t to
students who have a mild to moderate diagnosed learning difference (as documented by a current psycho-educational evaluation) and
who have demonstrated the ability to learn in a classroom of approximately 20 students. Our new learning specialist, Amy Siegel, is
working closely with students both during the day and also in afternoon sessions. Through Kane, we believe that we can provide better
suppor t for students who may struggle in one or more academic areas based on their learning differences.
I anticipate a productive and fulfilling year, not only in the classroom but on the field, in the community, and on the cour t. Prospect Hall
will always have a special place in our collective hear ts, but our future in Buckeystown promises great things for our students, faculty, and
staff who continue to “live for others” as Christ taught us, while at the same time, cultivating a lifelong love of learning.

Planned Giving
“Philanthropy has the potential to inspire a personal
legacy and allow us to leave a lasting mark.”
Charles W. Collier, Senior Philanthropic Advisor at Harvard University.
As you may know, many non-profit organizations – including Saint John’s
Catholic Prep, rely on charitable donations and planned giving strategies
implemented by generous donors to help fund operations and support
the organization’s long-term financial needs. Planned gifts of life insurance,
appreciated holdings, charitable trusts, and bequests are among the many ways
to support the future of Saint John’s. Planned gifts are strategic charitable
contributions that can provide the donor with important tax benefits now and
in the future.
An attractive planned giving strategy is donating appreciated stock or other
securities. Many taxpayers may have appreciated stock that would be ripe for
donation. This strategy offers an immediate income tax deduction for the fair
market value of the securities and avoids capital gains taxes.
There are many other planned giving options that offer a wide array of
immediate and long-term tax benefits, which is a great way to reduce your
tax burden while helping your charity of choice. We encourage you to please
consider Saint John’s. Please check with your financial advisor to see what
works best for you.

33rd Annual Soirée - Successful and Fun!
The 33rd Annual Soiree held on March 29th at Musket Ridge Golf Club was a
successful and fun event. The attendance, sponsorships and donations increased
over last year and the event generated over $53,000, which includes $10,800 for
our growing Music Program. The Hawaii Raffle was a big hit – 90 tickets were sold
and the lucky winner is a woman in the Frederick community. The auction and raffle
items had something for everyone and were beautifully displayed. The class baskets
were creative with a fun spin and the room was decorated in a festive “March
Madness” theme. Saint John’s wishes to thank all the parents, grandparents, alumni
and friends who attended the Soiree and also those who suppor ted the Soiree
with a sponsorship, cash, or item donation. The Soiree Committee of parents did
a fantastic job. We especially want to thank the parents for their hard work and
dedication in serving on the Soiree Committee.

Mock Trial Recognized
Spring Honors Assembly
Saint John’s Catholic Prep celebrated the academic achievements of our student body
at the Annual Spring Honors Assembly. Over 200 students were recognized based on
their 2013 fall semester grades. The three different Honor Rolls announced were:
Second Honors: awarded to students who earn a cumulative grade point average
of 3.1 and who pass all subjects. Two grades of C or lower disqualifies a student
from consideration of Second Honors.
First Honors: awarded to students who earn a cumulative grade point average of
3.5 and achieve no grade lower than a B in any subject.
The President’s List: awarded to students who have achieved all A’s or a
cumulative grade point average of 4.0. This is the highest academic achievement at
Saint John’s Catholic Prep.
Members of the Mock Trial team were recognized for their hard work and
making it to the semi-finals. Students were given cer tificates and legal pins for
their par ticipation.
Students Support Heartly House
The students from each grade level with the highest GPA’s in the school were also
recognized: Haylee Orlowski from the class of 2017, Finn Mayhew from the class of
2016, Shannon Bernier from the class of 2015, and Kelsey Bealmear from the class of
2014. Kelsey also has the honor of having the highest GPA in the entire school.
Congratulations to all of our honorees!
The National Honor Society selected the Hear tly House for their Spring semester’s
collection drive. The Hear tly House is a local organization in Frederick County that
addresses issues of domestic violence, intimate par tner violence and sexual assault.
Over the course of several weeks, the classes at Saint John’s competed over who
could bring in the most cleaning supplies to help the Hear tly House perform their
impor tant work for the community. This healthy competition produced over 200
bottles of laundry detergent along with an impressive amount of towels, diapers,
wipes and bleach. Way to go NHS!

2014 Junior-Senior Prom
The Junior and Senior classes held the annual Prom at Hollow Creek Golf Club in
Middletown. The event was a rousing success and students had a grand time from
beginning to end.
Directed by Kelsey Carper, Wilde’s famous comedy, The Impor tance of Being Earnest,
was first performed in London in 1895. This comedy draws a parody of Victorian-era
morality and its endless concern with status and respectability. With elements of a
typical farce, the plot is a complicated stew of false identities, misunderstandings, and
relationships which turns the standards of British society on its head.
The two performances on March 29th were both met with thunderous applause
and positive reviews from all in attendance. The cast consisted of Kevin Dolan as
Algernon Moncrieff, Sarina Sofia in the role of Lane and Merriman,Tim Johnson in the
role of Jack Wor thing, Shannon Bernier as Lady Bracknell, Sarah Vandegrift in the role
of Gwendolen Fairfax, Mandy Quarantillo as Miss Prism, Cecilia Bracey in the role of
Cecily Cardew, and Finn Mayhew as Rev. Chasuble. Congratulations to everyone on a
great performance!

2013-2014 HONOR ROLL OF DONORS REPORT
“Extraordinary things are accomplished by the giving hearts of volunteers” – Kristi A. Dyer, MD
A Message from
The Chairman of the Board
and
The Executive Director for Advancement
On Behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to thank you for your generous
support of Saint John’s Catholic Prep.
Last year was our first full year in our new school building at our Buckeystown Pike
Campus. This was a seminal moment in our school’s history. And because of the
support of families, alumni, and friends of Saint Johns, we were able to successfully
transition to our new campus and make the experience a positive one for our students.
Total cash contributions from all sources of income amounted to $622,796 with an
additional $38,943 in in-kind donations. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a
giving community.
This year we will enhance our new campus with the development of several additional
athletic fields, including baseball, softball, and football fields. These new facilities will
greatly improve the experience for our current and future student body and allow
for increased participation in athletics. We will continue to raise money for the
development of the fields, and we appreciate your financial support to this cause.
Thank you again for you generosity and your continued support of Catholic education at
Saint Johns Catholic Prep.
Jim Plamondon
Chairman
Board of Trustees
In an effort to conserve expenses, again this year, the Honor Roll of Donors Report
is combined with the Fall Newsletter. It was another exceptional year for Saint John’s
Catholic Prep. Please take a few moments to read through the report.
The faculty, staff, and students at Saint John’s are tremendously grateful for the enthusiastic
support of our entire community of parents, alumni, board members, alumni parents,
grandparents, and friends. Thank you, one and all, for your generosity.
It was our first full year on the new campus and a great year of fundraising for the Saint
John’s school community. The 33rd Annual Soiree was another fun and successful event,
raising over $70,600, with $10,800 of the funds being applied to the music program. For
the third year in a row, the Annual Fund exceeded its budgeted goal, ending the year with
$171,779. New this year was a Grant in Aide Program to assist the financial aid program,
which raised $39,700.
The generosity from our donors allows us to help close the gap between the true cost of
a Saint John’s education and the funding available from tuition. Your financial commitment
is never taken for granted – every donation is greatly appreciated.
