We are undergoing some changes with our Member’s Only website. We are looking at a brand new launch just after the first of the year and we need your help. The Member’s Only website has needed some updating for several years and we have taken on this task over the past few months. We are in the process of upgrading our software, working with a new design, making sure our information is updated and providing training for our staff to make sure they know how to work and update the new site. This is where you come in with your help. Please take a few minutes over the next few weeks and look at your Membership Roster information. Log into the Member’s Only site and go to Roster. If you have never logged onto the members site you can find a link at the bottom right of the main page at www.chartierscc.com and select Members. Your Member # needs to have two zeros in front and a total of five digits need to be entered. You can also create a password if need be at this time as well. Once logged in, the Roster link is at the top of the page in-between Calendar and Newsletter links. Find your name either by search or first letter of last name that will then display a list that you can choose. Once you have your information please review to make sure it is updated and correct. If not, there is a link at the top right of the page which says “click on this link to update your personal information.” Once you enter the editing screen you can change Personal, Home and Business information. When finished please click Update at the bottom of the screen. Your information is updated. Along with updating your Membership information, we are asking everyone to collect a digital photo of yourself that will be used for the New Member’s Website. Each member will be able to add a photo to their profile in the new site. This will be very helpful for the staff that has been asking for this feature for a long time as well as for other members to put a name with a face. We want to continue to make the Club a larger family and personal photos can go a long way to help create that family. There will be other changes and instructions once the site goes live after the first of the year so keep a look out for additional information in the near future. Enjoy and please let me know if you have any questions. (pc@patrickconnolly. com). Patrick Connolly, Chairman Information Technology Notes From Herb Hyland Can you believe it??? December already!! Well, as I start my term as the WGA chair I would like to reflect back to the past year and give a huge thank you to Teri Dunn for her over the top service that she gave to the WGA. She was on top of every event and made some awesome changes in the schedule. She made it very fun and exciting to be part of the WGA, and we just want her to know how much she is appreciated. Thank you Teri! Probably before this newsletter hits your mailbox, we will have held our holiday luncheon. Every year we pick a charity to sponsor, and this year we voted on the Women’s Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh. We will have a guest speaker from the center to fill us in on what is happening at the shelter. The Women’s Center and Shelter offers high quality, confidential and free programs to women in a crisis. Please feel free to check out their website www.wcspittsburgh.org because this truly is a good cause. Also, there will be a holiday bazaar to kick off our holiday shopping. We will be able to purchase some gifts for the special people on your list or pick a special something for yourself. We will have 5 different venders sharing their wares from kitchen and cooking supplies to jewelry or coffee. There will be something for everyone and a percentage of the sales will go toward our selected charity, the Women’s Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh. There is nothing like retail therapy to lift our spirits, so happy shopping. Also once again we will have the round robin gift exchange which offers a bunch of laughs. This is always a good way to put a smile on everyone’s face. We’ll let you know of the success of our fundraising for this worthwhile charity in Explorers Plan First Event, Tour of Clayton, Lunch Those of you who could not attend The Explorers’ launch party missed a very good party and a fun afternoon! Want to come? the next newsletter. Stay tuned. I would like to welcome the new officers into the fold for the coming year. • Judy Gates – Vice chair • Ann Coffaro – Secretary • Missy Smith – Treasurer Missy has been our treasurer for two terms, which is 4 years and this is her last year. Thank you Missy for keeping the WGA financially secure and all the time that you put into your role. As the holidays quickly approach us and we trudge through the winter weather ahead, we keep that twinkle in our eye for the warm weather and a new season of golf. Stay warm around a cozy fire and spring will be here before we know it. Jamie Speakman WGA Chairwomen Grounds Update Early onset of frigid temperatures and record snowfall has shocked areas all over the country. Our Department was very fortunate to have taken an early, aggressive approach towards winterizing our golf course. Please see below the fall and winterizing work that has been completed along with some insight on our winter projects ahead. Fall/Winterization Tasks Irrigation and H20 winterization This year we pulled the trigger and blew out all water lines on the golf course a week earlier than normal, ensuring that there is no water to freeze and expand in the pipes will aid in the prevention of cracked water lines. As mentioned we performed these procedures one week early which allowed us to avoid the early deep freeze where we experienced temperatures in the single digits. The items winterized included: 1. Irrigation system 2. 2” line to our water fountains 3. 2” line to the 10 tee (half-way house) 4. 2” line to the restrooms on the course 5. Cart Barn H20 6. Pool & pool house Pesticide Applications 1. Snow Mold: With the weather being as unpredictable as it’s been, we have added an early season snow mold application to our agronomic program. This application, made in early November, allows us some breathing room when trying to plan for our last possible treatment of the year (Usually in the first week of December). It acts as an insurance policy in the event that the weather is not conducive to make that December application. 2. Soil Amendment: Annual soil sampling done in October has allowed us to amend our playing surfaces with fall applications of soil amendments. These applications correct any soil nutrient deficiencies allowing for all available nutrients to be used in the spring. Sand Top Dressing Over the last 3 weeks we have made 3 sand topdressing applications to our putting greens. Larger than normal amounts of sand applied to the greens will act as a blanket, which insulates the crown of the turf plant. We will possibly make one more application in order to reach our desired amount of sand protection. Native Area Mowing & Pesticide Treatment All native grass areas have been mowed down, as done on an annual basis. This year we added a fall application of both a pre and post emergent herbicide in order to eliminate undesired grasses and weeds. Come spring we will make another pre and post emergent application just as the grass “wakes up” and begins growing. EarthQuake (Slicing) All 27 acres of fairways have been sliced at a depth of 6”. This is the first year we have been able to accomplish all of our fairways surfaces. This is largely due to the fact that we now own the machine, and can perform the work when the timing is favorable. Fall slicing allows for water to penetrate our tight clay subsurface. When water freezes and thaws in the profile it is subject to fracturing which helps soil structure and permits room for root growth. Winter Work As always, the majority of our winter will be divided between the following projects: 1. Tree Work We will continue to add to last year’s aggressive tree pruning program. The work completed last year really helped in terms of aesthetics and playability. We must also perform minimal tree removal on the property for the following reasons: • Over-populated groves which compete with a healthy turf stand • Dead or declining trees which pose safety concerns • Trees that compromise the design or layout of a golf hole 2. Drainage Our first major drainage project this offseason will be on the bottom of #12 fairway at the green side of the golf hole. Existing drainage consists of old terracotta pipe which has deteriorated and altered the integrity of 7 the drainage system. This work will include: • Removal of terracotta pipe and replacing it with 24” solid corrugated pipe • Rebuilding 2 catch basins • Adding 4” catch basins on the fairway This Drain is vital to the infrastructure of other drains located throughout the back 9, specifically holes 13-17. We are starting on # 12 because this is where the water exits the property. Once this segment is completed we can work outward repairing and replacing drainage on the back (#13-#17). 3. Equipment Repair and Maintenance Each off season, all of our equipment undergoes annual inspection. This inspection includes, but is not limited to: a. Reel/blade sharpening b. Bearing replacement c. Fluid Changes (Oil, Hydraulic, Transmis sion, etc.) d. Brake inspection and repair e. Safety Lights & Feature repairs and inspection f. Power Wash and Detailing g. Small rebuilds 4. Accessory Refurbishing Of course there are the days when it is not feasible to perform work on the golf course due to inclement weather. During these times, all of our golf course accessories are refurbished for a fresh look for following golf season. With the holidays quickly approaching, our Department would like to wish all A Safe & Happy Holiday Season. Please stay tuned for future winter updates, as these times can be just as difficult for the turf as the summer months. Our Department is very pleased with the decisions we have made thus far to prepare the golf course for the winter months ahead and will continue to be proactive.
