OAK VALLEY (OV) students got an unusual reward for their fundraising efforts….the chance to duct-tape their principal to a wall.
Pound for Hounds: Pounds for Hounds was an Oak Valley school wide
fundraiser for animals in the Gloucester County Animal Shelter. The 6th
grade was inspired by the story about an abandoned dog called Stray,
by Cynthia Rylant. They wanted to help the cause, so they made it
public and started open donations throughout their school. The teachers at OV asked the students to set a cash goal. Inspired students in
every class decided that their goal was $500. To give children that
extra push to donate, a competition was made

Shady Lane (SL) changed it up a little this year and focused their efforts
on the American Heart Association with their Jump Rope for Heart event/
series!
They began their program with a kick off assembly introducing Branden, a
15 year old boy born with a heart defect. His message during the opening
assembly was inspiring and impactful. Shady Lane wanted to raise
awareness of healthy heart living. So, throughout the month of February
they focused on nutrition, mindfulness, and the importance of physical
activity. February was filled with fun and important information… all while
raising money for this very important cause.

Mom always said, “Get a good night’s sleep so that in the morning you don’t say”, “ I AM Not
Going To Get Up Today”. So at night you read “Dr. Seuss’s Sleep Book” to get a good night’s
sleep. As you get dressed for school the next morning you find a “Fox in your socks” and “The
Cat In The Hat” . You then shout ,“There's a Wocket In My Pocket”. You start laughing out
loud as you “Hop On POP” down the stairs to the delicious aroma of “Green Eggs and Ham”.
As you leave the house you start thinking of, “Oh, The Places You'll Go”, “If I Ran The Circus”
or “If I Ran The Zoo”. What a wonderful, wonderful whacky world of Dr. Seuss it will be,
because my dad, “Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?”!
The above is a little silly but so is the wonderful whacky world of Dr.
Seuss. So, in celebration of Dr. Seuss’ Birthday and all the wonderful
critical thinking books that he wrote for young and old alike, we thank
him and celebrate his contribution to reading.
Oak Valley, Good Intent, Pine Acres, Central, Shady Lane, and Lake
Tract schools invited the community to come into the classrooms and
read to their students. Mayor Paul Medany, Superintendent Dr. Ford,
Jr., Freeholder Jim Jefferson and parents came in to read.
Lake Tract was very lucky to get a very special husband and wife
team who retired from the Deptford school district but continues to
give back, Mr. & Mrs. Colusi (center photo).

members thanks all those who participated in the 2016 Read Across

Mr. Schilling, the principal at OV, said if they hit their goal of $500 he
would be duct-taped to a wall in front of the whole school!
Well, a picture speaks a thousand words.
The Pounds for Hounds helpers were:
Skylar Cooper (she was a HUGE help and spearheaded this. She also designed the bulletin board and updated it weekly); Julia Riendeau; Emma Dajnowski; Isabella Yheaulon; Billy Viereck; Mohamed Mosad; Jazmeli Cruz
(designed the “pounds” that were sold school wide for 50 cents a
piece); Bradin Vinciguerra (who came up with the name) and Brooklynn Hewitt
The whole school was involved, however, the 6th grade raised
the most funds, hence them being the primary tape applicators.

Alicia Rose Victorious Foundation (ARVF)
To bring a week of recognition and fundraising to an end, a gymnasium filled with students wearing
the color of purple was a beautiful sight to behold. The Monongahela Middle School held a week
long recognition to bring awareness of Teen Cancer and the Alicia Rose Victorious Foundation
(ARVF) which fuels this cause.
“ARVF’s goal is to create as much awareness as they can to hospitalized adolescents who fit a
different population than the traditional younger child that goes to the hospital,” ARVF co-founder
Gisele DiNatale said.
Gisele DiNatale is Alicia’s mother and foundation founder who travels around speaking at events
to help bring awareness of the challenges that teenagers with cancer go through.
AVRF was founded 12 years ago after Alicia Rose DiNatale, daughter of Gisele and Voorhees
Deputy Mayor Mario DiNatale, passed away from cancer at the age of 16.
Since then 61 teen lounges at hospitals throughout the country were created. The foundation
continues to support these lounges by improving the time spent there through several methods of
social events, teen kits and caring. Caring is the core idea of the ARVF. Letting the families know
that they are not alone and people care about the fight and their quality of life.
Through the dedicated staff at MMS a check in the amount of $1,049.16 was presented to the
Alicia Rose Victorious Foundation at the school board meeting in April 26, 2016.

pun intended, at the assembly held that Friday.

Lake Tract’s creation of 101 Dalmatians was a Disney inspired production and a Lake Tract Success!
The whole school participated in this Read Across America event. The third and fourth grade teachers
came up with the FUN idea of dressing up as Dalmatians! Before asking the staff to join their
“pack” a late email was sent out and by the next morning half of the staff was dressed as
Dalmatians! Everyone worked together to make this idea come to life!
Dalmatian ears and tails and Cruella’s wig were ordered on Amazon. Felt was cut for dog collars. White t-shirts, black fabric paint, and sponges were purchased from AC Moore. Some of
the women even cut 100 yards of tulle to make white and black tutus! Mr. Scott and Mr. Rose
surprised us all by being dressed as the puppy thieves, Horace and Jasper!
Everyone came together to make Read Across America Day
even more special and exciting for the students!

It ended with a Jump Rope for Heart event on February 26th. The whole school participated in various jump rope stations!
As an incentive to meet their goal of $5,000, Mrs.
Scerbo agreed to allow herself to be “duct taped”
to the wall of the All Purpose room by the children
who raise at least $85.00! In addition, the class
who raised the most amount of money received
their OWN playground equipment along with extra
recess time.
The event/series was an awe-inspiring
and overwhelming success because
they surpassed their goal of $5,000.00
and raised over $10,000.00 for the
American Heart Association!!.

On Thursday, April 14, Central Early Childhood Center teachers Mrs.
Morrison & Miss Gewertz’s kindergarten class invited Tyler Severance,
the World YoYo Champion in their classroom to do a presentation.
Tyler Severance has traveled to over 20 countries teaching students
about the applied sciences of YoYos, and showing everyone the benefits
that come with learning to play with such an mentally and socially enriching toy.
At Central, Tyler talked about the value
of perseverance when learning something new. He explained to the class
the hours, thousands in fact, that he
dedicated to perfect his game. He said
to keep trying no matter how difficult the
task may be….never give up. The students were excited and asked very good
questions.
Tyler now lives in New Jersey and started his own company, Recess. So besides being an motivational speaker,
Tyler is now designing, making and distributing his personal brand yo-yos.

Oak Valley students and teachers took the time to have some fun
and celebrated the 100th day of school by dressing themselves up
as if they were 100-years-old.

Katie Thomas – Second Grade Class
The 100th-day celebration featured walking canes, gray hair,
walkers, reading glasses perched on the end of noses, shawls,
bent backs, hair rollers, bathrobes, fluffy bedroom slippers, costume jewelry, and
more. It was amazing to see
what each student thought
what a 100 year old person
looked like to them. In fact, it
was delightful and humorous
to see the students mimicking
a 100 year old person.
John Schilling, principal of
OV, said, “Kids were excited
and couldn’t wait to show
their more experienced side.”
He further added, “It was a
fun day and both the students
and staff had fun with the
activity.”

Monica Marino, 4th Grade teacher at Shady Lane
Elementary School was awarded a grant to conduct The Author/Illustrator Meet and Greet program at Shady Lane . This program was provided to all the students of Shady Lane through a
grant from the Deptford Township Foundation for
Educational Excellence.
Michael Dooling is an author/illustrator who
through his drawings brings life to stories told in
books. To prepare the students for Mr. Dooling’s
visit, all classrooms were provided with copies of
several of Mr. Dooling's historical fiction books that
he provided the illustrations. On the day of the
visit, Mr. Dooling met with students in 3 sessions.
He provided a behind the scenes look at creating
a picture book. He illustrated to the students how
to make a story come alive with pictures.
After the sessions, Mr. Dooling sketched 10 students. In the library. Following the sketching, Mr.
Dooling had lunch with 15 students as he continued with a Q&A with them. Monica Marino, teacher at Shady Lane and coordinator of this program
said, “Mr. Dooling’s visit reinforced language arts,
social studies, and art curriculum standards in a fun and informative way”.
She further stated that “Mr. Dooling's lessons are sure to inspire creativity and
challenge students to reach new goals!”
Thanks to Mrs. Marino for providing a unique and fun way of teaching and inspiring students.

Each year the Deptford Township mayor and
council embraces the opportunity to honor and
celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with a contest
at the local Deptford schools.
This year, Central Early Childhood Center, Pine Acres, Shady
lane, Lake Tract, Good Intent, Oak Valley and Monongahela
Middle School students participated in this township collaboration with school and municipality. Each student received a
certificate and a plaque for their contribution of either poetry,
poster or art from mayor and council. There were well over
500 parents students, teachers and family members that
attended. The talent displayed and the creative sides of the
Deptford students were unmatchable.
After the presentation, pizza, Chick-fil-A, pretzels, cookies and
assorted beverages were available for all who attended. This
portion of the event was sponsored by South Jersey Federal
Credit Union .
A big THANK YOU to Mayor Paul Medany, Councilmen: Wayne
Love, Phil Schocklin, Ken Barnshaw, Tom Hufnell, Joe Scott;
Freeholder Jeff Jefferson and South Jersey Federal Credit Union's
President/CEO Rahul Kachru for their support and contributions.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. believed that not standing up for what is right is just as bad as doing wrong.
How can we stand up for what is right?
A day of service, a day of giving, a day of love, this is just one of many of Dr. King’s dreams. Monongahela Middle
School students brought the dream to reality and answered the call of service by visiting a senior citizen home on Monday, January 18, to serve those who needed it the most….our seniors.
Kudos to Chinmayee Narayan, Camryn Ransom; Casey Tirado; Brendan Meekins; Alexis Murphy; Marlene Gonzalez;
Paige Bailey; Hailey Regen and Kaylee Bailey for their service.

Deptford 5K Run/Walk for Veterans was held on Saturday, April
23, 2016. Several participants
from the Monongahela Middle
School including Mrs. Tammy
Bitting, MMS 7th Grade Science Teacher, came out to help raise money to benefit the Deptford Township Veterans Memorial Fund. Of course, the day had nothing to do with science homework or a challenge made by Mrs. Bitting with any
student that can beat her. The day however, was filled with fun, community involvement and success. Congratulation to Mrs. Tammy Bitting and all the students who participated in this annual township event.
