Mili Gewirztman 2 July 2016 Employee of the Month Resident Spot Light Larry “Pretty Boy Sharpe” Weil Larry started wrestling in 7 th grade. When asked why he chose wrestling he stated “Because I was told to!”. Larry had several local wrestlers who lived close by him in Paulsboro NJ. He kept bugging and bugging them until they took him under their wing and taught him the ropes. Larry attended Paulsboro High School in New Jersey where he held a June 2016 Alexis “Lexi” CostelloPhysical Therapy Tech wrestling record of 13-1-1 and was ranked 4 in the NCAA national rankings. After high school he attended Gloucester County College and Trenton State University with a major in Criminal Justice. In 1974, after graduation, Larry became a police officer in Trenton New Jersey. He worked in that profession for approximately 10 week before the WWWF called his name. He was scouted by Red Beny and Gorilla Monsoon who trained him for a life in professional wrestling. They told me “if you want to be a wrestler now’s the time”. Later that year he made hi s pro wrestling debut in the WWWF as “Pretty Boy Sharpe”. We asked Larry where he got his ring name….”from my mother of course!” He said everyone always asks that. His mom called him that name from the time he was a little boy. Sharpe left the WWWF and went to Canada where he won his first championship while working for Stampede Wrestling in Calgary Alberta. Forming a tag-team with Ripper Collins, he won the Stampede Wrestling International Tag Team Championship on September 24, 1976 just 2 years after his professional debut. A year later in 1977 he returned to the WWWF where he formed a tag team with Dynamite Jack Evans. They were known as “They Hollywood Blondes” and had successful run July 2016 Tamira Webster- LPN Congratulations to our June & July Employees of the Month! Thank you for your dedication to our Center and its Residents. You are both truly appreciated here at Deptford Center! winning matches on TV and at live events. In 1977 the Hollywood Blondes went on to win the WWC North American Tag Te am Championship title against Carlos Colon & Victor Joyica. To his credit, Larry has also went on to win the NWA Pacific International Heavyweight Championship in 1978. He returned to the WWF in 1979 for a short time at the request of Vince McMahon Sr. But he ended up leaving independently and opened a very well known training school. He has a long list of accomplishments and titles to his name. Including being the first human being to beat the 740lb wrestling Bear! But he is most known for creating the Monster FactoryProfessional Wrestling School in Paulsboro NJ, his home town. July 2016 3 Deptford Center 2016 4 July 2016 Welcome Summer Festivities!! July 2016 RESIDENT’S POETRY CORNER 5 Nursing Nugget Did You Know? By: Maryann Thomas Ginny Trickett- DON Heat, Hydration and Suntan Lotion! A fun day outside means plenty of sun, which naturally g iv es your body v itamin D! But exc essiv e and pr olong ed sun exposure can cause sunbur n, skin damag e, pr ematur e skin ag ing, skin cancer, cataracts, uneven pigmentation of skin and heat stroke. Take the right precautions to avoid these hazar ds and enjoy the sunshine in a safer way. The world is full of things we learn each and every day The old, the new, the young, the few The brown, the white and the grey We journey everyday down the passageway that leads us through the night We are then happy once again to reach the dawning light Life is not only a struggle it’s also a fight Just keep on trying until you get it right My advice to you is this, use all your senses… hit or miss Take the right direction and avoid bad consequences The more you’ll do, they more you’ll know Just start again, don’t let it go The more you try, the more you will do After all it all up to you Don’t forget to ask God for help and pray too! Sudden change in temperature can affect everybody especially with lower and higher age groups. These are the two g r oups that suffer from extreme heat during summer. Elder ly people fac e a lot of difficulties in adjusting with the sudden c hang es of temperature. Thus they end up with the c hr onic medic al c onditions like fev er , dehydr ation, heat str oke etc . Some pr ecautionary measures will be actually important to draw for c oping with extr eme heat of summer . Any type of non - alc oholic and non - c affeine dr ink will be adv antageous for health during the summer . Your body will lose water in the form of sweat which needs to be replenished with water. Drink at least 8 g lasses of water every day to stay hydrated during the summer. There ar e juic es fr om natur al fr uits such as lemon, orange, apple, pine apple etc. whic h ar e v er y helpful to replenish lost water within your body. I f you want to get something new, get a juicer and enjoy v ar iety of fr uit dr inks dur ing the hot summer season. Dur ing summer , you skin tends to r em ain unpr otec ted maximum time. Thus, it is impor tant to pr otec t your skin ideally during the summer season. The UV rays that fall ov er your skin will be really harmful as this c an cause the problems like premature aging, sun burn and even skin c ancer. It wi ll be better to apply a moisturizer that is associated with the SPF or sun pr otec tion fac tor . Do not for g et at all to apply the sunsc r een lotion befor e g oing out in the sunlig ht. Always keep a bottle with spr ayer . Allow c old water to g et inside and spray it on several parts of your body whenever you ar e feeling hot. You can also spray it over your fac e to g et a fr esh feeling . This is one of my fav or ite tips to beat the summer heat! 6 July 2016 A note from Kenny Summer is finally here, and as I was thinking about this note, I realized that summer is a season of patriotism. We welcome it in with Memorial Day, a day of barbecues and parades and one that it is the unofficial kick-off of the season. Then there’s Flag Day in June, Independence Day in July and finally, Labor Day in September signals a return to school for the kids and the unofficial end of summer. But do we stop often enough to think about those holidays and what they mean to all of us? Memorial Day is much more than a three day weekend; it’s the day we remember our fallen countrymen who made the ultimate sacrifice on battlefields around the world so that the rest of us could live in freedom. On Flag Day we honor the symbol of our country which shows the collective history of the American people – 13 stripes for the original 13 colonies, and fifty stars, ancient symbol of the heavens, to represent every state. In July we celebrate Independence Day, maybe one of the biggest holidays of the year, where we all recall that despite our differences, our backgrounds, and our status, we are all Americans. And on Labor Day, we salute the men and women who helped make America the greatest economic power in the world, and keep us there to this day. But there’s one more thing that makes this season of patriotism especially meaningful to us at Centers. In every one of our facilities we have the honor of caring for some of our country’s military heroes, the men and women who answered the call, unselfishly and without hesitation. Either as long term residents or for brief visits as rehab residents, we have had the pleasure of serving veterans from WW II, Korea, Vietnam and the Middle East. Today I’d like to take the opportunity to thank them again, and to remind everyone at all of our facilities, that our respective communities are made up of some pretty wonderful people, and our world is a better place for it. Kenny Rozenberg, CEO Sun worshippers beware Everyone looks forward to the bright sunny days of summer, but the sun can be dangerous for people any age. Gaining some level of protection from the sun is a practice that goes back as far as the ancient Greeks and Egyptians, but it wasn’t until the last 30 years that the products we use now were fully developed. Today the American Cancer Society advises everyone to wear sunscreen as it helps to prevent certain types of skin cancer, and the one they recommend is a broad spectrum UVA/UVB type. There are two types of sunscreen, UVA and UVB. UVA absorbs the sun’s ultra-violet rays and radiation and UVB blocks them. Check the label for one that does both, and reapply it throughout the day, especially if you’re at the beach or in the pool where your sun protection could be washing away. July 2016 7 Was that a horse in the hall? Yes it was. Hamlet, a five-year old miniature horse visited the Hammonton Center this spring spreading his special brand of good cheer. It caused quite a stir when Hamlet walked through the front door and into the main lobby, causing a few double-takes. But everyone was thrilled. Hamlet and his stable mate Honor are specially trained therapy horses owned by Laurie Tietjen, who began working with therapy horses after her brother, a first responder, lost his life on 9/11. Laurie was seeking some way to honor his memory while helping others work through a tragedy in their lives when she founded Mini Horse Heroes. These gentle, sensitive therapy horses are so well trained that they have even worked in the intensive care unit of area hospitals. But ne look at this photo will tell you that that both horse and resident found this visit particularly rewarding. Hamlet usually works with children, while Honor is soon to become the country’s smallest police horse. Honor, who was named for Rescue 1 in New York City, works with first responders, veterans, and children who have lost a parent in the line of duty. The visit by Hamlet was another interactive experience arranged for by the Centers Health Care and Hammonton Center recreation teams. No wonder people enjoy living at a Centers Health Care facility. You never know who you’ll meet. To see more pictures of Hamlet at Hammonton Center, visit Hammonton Center on Facebook. Bon Voyage That’s what friends of Mary D. are saying to her. She’ll be taking a much anticipated trip to attend her grandson’s wedding in Atlanta Georgia thanks to a gift from our Buffalo and Waterfront Centers. These two facilities have been supporting Senior Wishes in Buffalo since its inception. Senior Wishes, sponsored by United Church Home Society in Orchard Park NY, partners with community businesses like Centers Health Care to help people in Buffalo achieve a dream they may otherwise find impossible. According to Dave Denny, administrator at Buffalo Center, “We’re a community resource. We see our role here in Buffalo as providing for the care and well-being of all our neighbors, not just those who are in need of full time care.” We wish Mary a safe and happy visit, and a long and happy life to the bride and groom! 8 July 2016 Your Brain Matters The power of Prevention 4th of July 5 Simple Steps to “Maximize Your Brain Health” is an important component of Alzheimer's Australia's dementia risk reduction program, Your Brain Matters, and emphasizes how preventive health measures can benefit your brain health. It shows you how to look after your brain health and has been developed by Alzheimer's Australia based on published research evidence. Being brain healthy is particularly important once you reach middle age as this is when changes start to occur in the brain. To lead a brain healthy life you need to look after your brain, your body and your heart - the earlier the better. Scientific research suggests that leading a brain healthy life may reduce a person's risk of developing dementia later in life. There are no guarantees however, as dementia cannot yet be prevented or cured but evidence does show that people can reduce their risk for dementia and other chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease and cancer by adopting healthy lifestyles. Think of your brain as being on a pedestal and that your role is to guard this most precious asset by making sure it is well nourished with good nutrition choices while enjoying the benefits of physical activity and mental challenges. It is never too late to switch to a healthier lifestyle. You don't need to start doing expensive new brain-training programs either - although they may be helpful - much of what you need to do to enjoy good brain health are simple things that you can easily do in your everyday life to lower your risk of dementia. Step One - Look after your heart Step Two - Be physically active Step Three - Mentally challenge your brain Step Four - Follow a healthy diet The fourth of July is our Country’s birthday. July 4, 1776 was the day our Country’s founders declared independence from Great Britain’s. This meant they would no longer follow the orders of Britain’s King. To do this was extremely dangerous. At the time Britain had one of the world’s strongest armies, and to go against the king was a crime punishable by death. But the king’s laws were unfair and our founders decided it was worth the risk of war to win the freedom to govern themselves. In 1783, the United States won that war, which we now call the Revolutionary War. Each part of our flag stands for something. The 50 stars stand for the 50 States. The 13 stripes stand for the 13 British Colonies, which declared their independence July 4, 1776. Our Flag is a symbol to show the world what we stand for. It also shows that we are connected to one another, that we are on the same team. This is why our Flag is so important and it is always to be treated with respect.
