Don’t Forget Headlights During Routine Maintenance
Veteran and even novice
drivers understand the importance of visibility when
they get behind the wheel
of their vehicles. When visibility is not an issue, drivers can more easily see their
fellow motorists and better
anticipate potentially dangerous situations. But when
visibility is compromised,
drivers and their passengers
are vulnerable to a host of
dangers, including inclement weather and aggressive
motorists.
Many things can affect
drivers’ visibility on the
road, but those who take a
proactive approach to improving their visibility can
put themselves in a better position to handle any
negative situations that may
arise. One of the ways to do
just that is to pay more attention to your headlights.
Often overlooked when
performing routine vehicle
maintenance, headlights
must be maintained to ensure optimal visibility for
drivers.
The following are a few
ways drivers can improve
the performance of their
headlights to make their vehicles safer for themselves
and their passengers.
• Pay attention to the
headlights’ output. Perhaps
the most noticeable indicator of an aging headlight
is its light output. As bulbs
start to dim, drivers may
find themselves struggling
to see during twilight and at
night. That difficulty is not
necessarily because drivers’ own vision is failing,
but may be a result of aging
bulbs whose light output is
gradually reduced by the
effects of humidity, electrical resistance and filament
fatigue. Drivers who notice
their headlights are not
producing as much light as
they once did should know
that reduced output is a telltale sign of aging bulbs that
need to be replaced.
• Say “so long” to the status quo. Recognizing dimming bulbs is just the first
step toward improving the
performance of your head-
lights. The next step is for
drivers to recognize that
all headlight bulbs are not
created equal. Instead of
replacing existing bulbs
with the same type of bulbs
provided by their vehicle’s
manufacturer, drivers can
vastly improve their visibility by upgrading to a bulb
designed to provide more
light than the standard halogen bulbs found in many
of today’s vehicles. Leading
automotive lighting manufacturer Philips produces a
range of Upgrade Headlight
Bulbs that offer up to 100
percent more light on the
road than standard halogen
bulbs. That’s a significant
benefit to drivers, as motor-
ists’ visual acuity is reduced
by 70 percent at night, when
statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration indicate
49 percent of all fatal accidents occur. The NHTSA
also notes that the fatality
rate per mile driven at night
is roughly three times as
high as it is during daylight
hours.
• Find the right fit. The
right headlight bulb can
dramatically improve visibility when driving at night,
but what’s good for the
goose is not always good
for the gander. That’s because motorists drive for
various reasons and on various roads, so the right bulb

for seniors who don’t often
take to the highways will not
necessarily be the best fit for
commuters who routinely
drive long distances. Philips makes a headlight bulb
for every type of driver, and
each Upgrade Headlight
Bulb creates a better beam
pattern that is dramatically
longer than that provided
by standard halogen lights,
ensuring drivers can safely
see no matter how accustomed they are to driving at
night.
• Let there be light. Regardless of how effective a
bulb has the potential to be,
drivers who don’t routinely
clean their headlights will
continue to have their visibility compromised. Certain preventative measures
can help drivers address
headlight issues before they
appear, ensuring their vis-
ibility is not compromised.
When checking your oil in
the driveway or even when
you’re filling up at the gas
station, take a few moments
to inspect your headlights
and address any issues that
arise as soon as possible.
The Philips Headlight Restoration Kit includes a posttreatment that provides
long-lasting UV protection
for headlight lenses. The kit
also includes a cleaner/polish and restorer/protector
so drivers can restore their
headlight lenses to “like
new” quality while increasing visibility and reducing
glare in as little as 30 minutes. Such quick and simple
maintenance can ensure
your headlights are performing optimally.

How To Sell Vehicle With Accident History
Selling a vehicle may
seem easy, but unloading
preowned vehicles may take
some time. While sellers
may already have their eyes
on the prize — a new vehicle — the first step is selling
their current vehicle at a fair
price, especially for those
sellers who need to finance
the purchase of their next
vehicle with the proceeds
they earn when selling their
current one.
Sellers must consider a
host of factors, including potential market for the vehicle
and its potential sale price,
before putting their vehicles
up for sale. The accident history of a vehicle is another
important factor to consider. Buyers are understandably weary about purchasing vehicles that have been
in an accident. Easily accessible vehicle history reports
can make it even more challenging to sell a used car,
but such reports don’t make
it impossible to unload preowned vehicles.
• Be open and honest. Hiding an accident is unethical
and can haunt you down the
road. It is better to be forthcoming about any accidents
a vehicle might have been in.
If you have documentation
of the accident, such as photos and receipts for repairs,
make it available to prospective buyers. If you have certification from an auto body
shop or mechanic that the
vehicle is in perfectly good
condition and was repaired
with quality, manufacturersupplied parts, offer that information as well. The more
information you provide
and the more honest and
forthcoming you are, the
less it will seem like you’re
trying to hide major damage.
• Encourage a vehicle inspection. Inform the buyer
that you have no qualms
about him or her taking the
car to a mechanic and having it thoroughly inspected.
This will show your confidence in the performance of
the vehicle.
• Consider a dealer tradein. Dealer trade-ins may not
earn you as much money
than you would get if you
were to sell the car privately, but trade-ins tend to be
simpler. Dealerships have
almost zero emotional attachment to vehicles and
likely won’t be as concerned
as a private buyer about an
accident on record. Some
dealers farm out used cars
to auctions or salvage yards.
It may be worth it to take the
lower price and not have the
headache of unloading the
car on your own.
• Be flexible on pricing.
The right price will help
prospective buyers overlook minor blemishes or accidents. When coupled with
the truth, the right price can
entice buyers to seal the
deal.
Auto accidents happen.
But while no one wants to
get into a fender-bender,
such accidents should not
prevent auto owners from
selling their vehicles in the
future.

Spring on the Road
Stay Safe When Driving In Wet Weather
Drivers must modify their
driving habits when weather compromises their visibility and makes road conditions unsafe. Rain can fall
any time of year, but tends
to be most problematic in
spring.
According to the Federal
Highway Administration,
wet roadways, and rain in
particular, are the main
cause of weather-related vehicle crashes. The National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that, between 2004 and 2013, rain
caused 573,784 crashes.
To drive safely in the rain
and avoid accidents, drivers
should follow certain precautions.
• Maintain windshield
wipers. Inspect and, if necessary change windshield
wipers regularly to ensure
they are working optimally.
Always test wipers before
driving in rainy weather.
• Turn on lights with wipers. Reduced visibility is a
major contributor to wetweather accidents. Drivers’
views may be hampered by
falling precipitation and
glare from wet roadways.
Cloudy conditions and fog
also compromise visibility. When using windshield
wipers, turn on your headlights as well. This makes
your vehicle more visible
to other motorists and improves your own ability to
see the road and pedestrians.
• Recognize changing
road conditions. Roadways accumulate oil and
engine fluids that can float
in rainwater, creating slippery road surfaces. This is
usually a problem during
the first few hours of a rainstorm or in areas that receive little precipitation and
then are subjected to downpours. These fluids make
rain-soaked roads even
more slippery. Slow down,
leave more room between
vehicles and try driving in
the tracks left by vehicles
ahead.
• Reduce speed. The automotive group AAA says
hydroplaning, when the
tires rise up on a film of water, can occur with as little
as 1⁄12 inch of water on the
road. The group goes on to
say that tires have to displace a gallon of water per
second to keep the rubber
meeting the road. Drivers should reduce their
speeds to correspond to
the amount of water on the
roadway. New tires can still
lose some contact with the
roadway, even at a speed as
low as 35 mph. Therefore,
reducing speed and avoiding hard braking and turning sharply can help keep
the rubber of the tire meet-
ing the road.
• Rely on the defogger.
Use the car’s windshield defroster/defogger to improve
visibility. Turn it on early
and keep it on until the rain
has stopped and visibility
has improved.
• Recover from a skid.
Skids can be frightening,
but when skidding, resist
any temptation to slam on
the breaks. Instead, continue to look and drive in
the direction you want to go
and slowly ease up on the
accelerator.
• Skip the cruise control.
It’s important to maintain
control over the vehicle in
rainy conditions, so avoid
using cruise control.
• Maintain tires. Proper
inflation and tire tread levels can improve traction.
AAA recommends check-
ing tread depth by inserting
a quarter upside down into
the tire groove. If you can see
above Washington’s head,
start shopping for new tires.
Check tire pressure on all
tires at least once a month.
Get an accurate reading
when tires are cold and adjust air pressure accordingly.
• Avoid other distractions.
Distracted driving can be
hazardous during good road
conditions and even more
dangerous when visibility
and other factors are compromised. Switch phones
and other devices off so you
can fully focus on the road
and other drivers.
Rainy weather can contribute to poor driving conditions. Drivers should make
changes to speed and other
factors to make wet weather
driving as safe as possible.

How To Help Young Drivers Stay Safe On Road
Teenagers typically anticipate
the moment they receive their
drivers’ licenses, feeling their
personal freedom increases dramatically in such moments.
While drivers’ licenses may be
liberating for teen drivers, parents may be considerably less
excited when their children pass
their drivers’ tests. Driving is a
big responsibility and one that
requires both concentration and
maturity. Seemingly innocent
things can turn pleasurable car
rides into accidents.
Although driving education
programs, testing and practice
behind the wheel are required
before kids can receive their
drivers’ licenses, it takes more
than classes, tests and limited
practice for teens to become
competent drivers. The National
Center for Health Statistics says
motor vehicle crashes are the
leading cause of death among
15- to 20-year-olds. Statistics
show that teen death rates increase with each additional passenger. Plus, according to the
Insurance Institute for Highway
Safety, 53 percent of motor vehicle crash deaths among teenagers in 2012, the most recent year
for data collection, occurred on
Friday, Saturday or Sunday between the hours of 9 p.m. and
midnight.
Considering one in five
WHITE’S
GARAGE
16-year-old drivers has an accident within their first year of
driving, according to statistics
compiled by DoSomething.org,
teen drivers may need more supervision and instruction. The
following are some risks on the
road to consider when educating teens.
• All calls are risky. Turn off
phones when in the car. The National Safety Council says more
than 30 studies show hands-free
devices are no safer because the
brain remains distracted by the
conversation. When talking on a
cell phone, drivers can miss seeing up to half of their surroundings, including traffic lights, stop
signs and pedestrians. Younger,
less experienced drivers may be
even more distracted by phone
calls.
• Slow down. Crash risks for
teens increase incrementally
with each mile per hour over the
speed limit. Speeding reduces
drivers’ ability to avoid an accident, and new drivers may not
be as capable of avoiding obstacles that come into their paths.
• Go sparingly on passengers.
The risk for automobile accidents increases with each additional passengers teens have
in their cars. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found the
risk increases 44 percent with
one passenger, doubles with
two passengers and quadruples
with three or more passengers.
Friends in the backseat can
prove very distracting or may
even encourage young drivers to
engage in risky behaviors.
• Avoid other distractions.
In addition to phones and too
many passengers, teens are distracted by looking things in their
own vehicle. For example, singing and dancing to music can
distract teens’ attention from
the road. In addition, some teens
may tend to personal grooming
when behind the wheel, further
taking their attention away from
the road.
Getting a driver’s license is
a milestone event in the lives of
teenagers, but one they should
not take for granted. Good drivers are not born, but developed
through practice, avoiding distractions and adhering to the
rules and regulations that govern the roads.

Prevent Bugs, Sap, Other Substances From Ruining Vehicle
Keeping vehicles looking
pristine requires care and
diligent cleaning. So many
day-to-day activities and environmental materials have the
potential to damage the finish on cars and trucks. While
winter weather and chemicals
used to keep roadways passable are often blamed for affecting the appearance of cars
and trucks, winter is not the
only time of year when substances can cause damage to
vehicles.
Spring and summer are
prime seasons for sap, birds

from chemicals used to create the car’s interior.
There are some indications that the smell is generated from more than 50 volatile organic compounds, or

While the potential dangers

Tree sap
According to Cars.com, an

something that will remove
the splatter without removing the paint in the process. A
product like WD-40 may help.
This oily product is normally
used on rust and hinges. When
applied with a cloth and allowed to penetrate the stain, it
can loosen difficult-to-remove
sticky substances. Always test
any product you use in an in-
conspicuous spot first to make
sure it doesn’t damage or discolor your the paint.
Insects or droppings that
are fresh may come off relatively easily with a good washing or hosing off of the car. Retailers also sell specialty insect
sponges to remove bugs and
other debris.
Tar
Soap and water will do little
to remove tar and other petroleum-based products from
vehicles. Commercial tar removal products use a strong
solvent or detergent to loosen
the tar. This may include kerosene, mineral spirits or another item mixed with lubricants.
Go slowly and use caution so
that you remove the tar and
not the paint.
Drivers who are hesitant to
clean their vehicles of common residue can have their
cars or trucks professionally
detailed, leaving the work in
the hands of experts.

On Your Next Road Trip - Enjoy Scenic Roads
Road trips have been
part of popular culture for
decades. Featured prominently in movies and books
such as “On the Road,” “Rain
Man” and “Easy Rider,” road
trips with friends or family tend to leave indelible
marks.
Remarkable road trips are
made more so by the company shared along the way
and the scenic and historical
roadways traversed to reach
a destination. Travelers
embarking on road trips in
Canada or the United States
should consider including
some of the following roadways in their travel plans.
• Haines Highway: If your
adventures take you through
Alaska, there is plenty of

Many auto manufacturers
aspire to build customer loyalty. Once a customer is satisfied with the performance and
durability of a vehicle, he or
she is more likely to purchase
or lease cars produced by that
vehicle’s manufacturer in the
future. Each year, automotive trend reporters categorize
those vehicles that command
the greatest share of the carbuying market. In 2015, certain vehicles moved up the list,
while others maintained their
hold on the top spots. According to data through the third
quarter of 2015 compiled by
automakers and the automotive resource Good Car Bad

trucks and SUVs).

legendary scenery to take
in. The backdrop along the
Haines Highway is sensational, but this stretch of
roadway also offers views of
the largest congregations of
bald eagles in the world. It
has been dubbed “The Valley of the Eagles.”
• Route 66: Now known
as “Historic Route 66,” this
famed road stretches from
Los Angeles to Chicago, cutting a path through a vast
portion of America’s heartland. Some say driving along
66 is an adventure in Ameri-
can history and that the road
embodies the best of the
United States.
• Pacific Coast Highway:
While not the fastest way
to travel, this winding road
that hugs the California
coast owes its popularity to
stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. It’s difficult to
avoid being swept up by the
breathtaking views of rock
formations, waves and cliffs.
• Highway 99: Referred to
as the Sea to the Sky Highway, this roadway in British
Columbia begins outside of

Vancouver and rises up into
the mountains. This road
trip is full of various climate
zones, mountains, lakes and
rivers. The 700-meter rock
face of “The Chief” also is a
popular draw.
• Columbia River Highway: The first paved road
in the northwestern United
States, Columbia River Highway also is the first scenic
highway in America. It is renowned for being a portion
of the original Oregon Trail,
and its 70 miles offers spectacular views year-round.
• Overseas Highway: This
impressive roadway extends
more than 100 miles from
Key Largo to Key West, Florida, linking all of the islands
that comprise the Florida
Keys. The Overseas Highway
includes a seven-mile bridge
across the water.
• Highway 12: This route
in Utah offers impressive
views of natural features. Attractions include the Bryce
Canyon, Red Canyon and
Grand Staircase-Escalante
National Monument.
• Loess Hills Trail: Loess-
es, which are hills formed
from silt, give land alongside
this trail in Iowa interesting
topography and varied flora.
Fall foliage here has been
formally qualified as a National Natural Landmark.
• Highways 44 and 240:
These routes in South Dakota take travelers through the
area known as the Badlands,
giving adventurers a glimpse
of the American West. Badlands National Park, Mount
Rushmore and the Crazy
Horse Memorial are other
attractions to take in while
in the area.
North America is filled
with many scenic roadways
perfect for road trips, which
remain one of the best ways
to explore and experience
the United States and Canada.

Tips Offered For Fun And Frugal Road Trip
Driving vacations are popular for a variety of reasons,
not the least of which is flexibility. Such excursions are
not restricted by flight schedules, and travelers often feel
as though they have more
control over their trips when
traveling by car rather than
traveling by air.
Road trips also can save
travelers money, especially
when traveling in groups of
three or more and expenses such as fuel and tolls are
shared. In addition to sharing the road with a few friends
and family members, road
trip enthusiasts can employ
several other strategies to enjoy a vacation that’s both frugal and fun.
• Downsize your vehicle.
While prices at the pump have
been more driver-friendly in
recent months, road trippers
who drive large sedans, trucks
or SUVs might be able to save
money by driving smaller vehicles during their trips. Especially small vehicles may be
impractical and uncomfortable depending on the number of people who are making
the trip, but mid-size vehicles
with ample storage space tend
to be more fuel-efficient than
large trucks or SUVs. If someone in your traveling party
drives such a vehicle and it’s
in good shape, take that car
instead of a larger alternative.
• Get a tuneup. Another way
to save money on your road
trip is to get a vehicle tuneup
in the days before your trip
is set to begin. Let your mechanic know you are planning
a road trip and ask that a full
diagnostic test be conducted
to make sure everything is
running efficiently. An air filter nearing its expiration date
may be worth replacing, as
a new filter will help to save
money on fuel. In addition,
replace tires with worn tread,
as old or inadequately inflated tires will force the engine
to work harder, wasting fuel
and costing you and your fellow travelers money along the

way.
• Consider various types of
lodging. Road trippers who
plan well in advance may be
able to find great deals on
lodging, but too much planning may cost travelers some
of the flexibility and freedom
they were hoping to enjoy during their vacations. Weather
permitting, campsites can be

unique and affordable places
to stay. When planning your
routes, choose roadways that
are close to popular campsites, avoiding campsites that
are too remote, as such sites
may cost you in time and fuel
what you’re saving on lodging.
If campsites are unavailable,
download hotel website apps
on your phone and use these
apps to find affordable rooms
as you go. Simply showing up
to hotels without reservations
is unlikely to yield great rates,
but apps may offer discounted rates on rooms hotels are
simply looking to fill at the last
minute.
• Bring your own food. Fuel,
lodging and food tend to be
the three biggest expenses on
driving vacations. Travelers
who bring their own food can
save a substantial amount of
money and maintain some
control over what they eat.
That’s a big benefit for men
and women who like to eat
healthy and prefer to avoid
the fast food fare that tends to
be the only options available
at rest stops.
Road trips make for great
vacations, and travelers can
take many steps to make such
excursions more affordable
without sacrificing fun.
