Tokyo Story [U]
Japan 1953 • 136 mins • Japanese with subtitles
One of the classics of world cinema
Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu’s masterpiece
is a deceptively simple tale of an older generation shunned by their children, only for the
siblings to realise the debt they owe their
parents. The perfect distillation of the concerns
that dominated much of Ozu’s work, and
digitally restored to its former glory, ‘Tokyo
Story’ is a poignant rumination on the
importance of family.

The Last Station [15]
Late Autumn [PG]
UK, Russia, Germany 2009 • 113 mins
Japan 1960 • 129 mins • Japanese with subtitles
An engrossing period drama
‘The Last Station’ details the turbulent final days
of Leo Tolstoy’s (Christopher Plummer, ‘The
Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus’) life. Although the
writer adores his wife, Countess Sofya (Helen
Mirren, ‘The Queen’), he is conflicted by the demands of the scheming Vladimir Chertkov (Paul
Giamatti, ‘Cold Souls’), who seeks to control his
inheritance. The accomplished cast give weight
to this sumptuously designed drama.
Ozu’s late masterpiece
Tokyo widow Akiko (Setsuko Hara) worries about
her grown-up daughter Ayako (Yoko Tsukasa),
who seems determined to stay single. A series
of suitors attempt to woo both women, who have
no choice but to face up to the reality of their
situation. Yasujiro Ozu’s effortless approach
draws us into these women’s lives, resulting in
an emotionally engaging drama, leavened by
tender and often surprising humour.

A white-knuckle ride through downtown
Baghdad
Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass
(‘The Bourne Supremacy’, ‘United 93’) re-team
for this taut thriller set in the chaotic early days
of the Iraqi conflict. Chief Warrant Officer Roy
Miller (Damon) is on a mission to find Saddam’s
WMD supply, but instead uncovers an elaborate
cover-up. Investigating the lies and dead ends,
he discovers that the most elusive weapon in
Iraq is the truth.
A powerful evocation of family life
Grégoire (Louis-Do de Lencquesaing) is a film
producer whose pressures from work and home
prove increasingly hard to deal with. Balancing
a successful professional career with a full
and happy private life is a familiar challenge
for most. Director Mia Hansen-Løve takes this
commonplace dilemma and turns it into a loving
but bittersweet portrait of a family whose world
comes apart under these conflicting strains.

New Orleans to the Palestinian segregation
wall in the West Bank.
A riveting adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s novel
In the first screen instalment of the best-selling
‘Millenium’ trilogy, journalist Mikael Blomkvist
(Michael Nyqvist) is hired to investigate a
powerful family’s past. Assisted by the feisty,
tough computer hacker, Lisbeth Salander

USA 1960 • 109 mins
Hitchcock’s classic digitally restored
After fifty years, Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller still
shocks. When Marion Crane (Janet Leigh)
absconds from Phoenix with her boss’s money,
little does she realise that the deserted motel
she has booked into is the worst place to spend
the night. Based on Robert Bloch’s novel, with
a stunning score by Bernard Hermann and
that shower scene, ‘Psycho’ remains one of
cinema’s greatest heart-stoppers.

relentless assault on the home, from moving

A new kind of hero…
‘Kick Ass’ is Mathew Vaughn’s (‘Layer Cake’)
kinetic adaptation of Mark Millar’s violent comic
tale of wannabe superheroes. Donning a mask
and a painted baseball bat, Aaron Johnson
(‘Nowhere Boy’) aims to fight crime – and win
the heart of Katie Deauxma (Lyndsy Fonseca) –
even though he has no super-powers. Nicolas
Cage lends heavyweight support as an ex-cop
who trains his daughter to be a lethal vigilante.
An exploration of the mysteries of faith
A winner at the Venice Film Festival, Jessica Hausner’s intriguing drama follows one
woman’s journey to the Christian shrine in the
foothills of the Pyrenees in the hope that she
will be cured of her disability. Hausner’s sensitivity as a director is matched by Sylvie Testud’s
remarkable performance, resulting in an often
intriguing and original cinematic experience.

Stunning digital presentation of a timeless gem
One of the great Hollywood musicals, featuring screen legends Marilyn Monroe and Jane
Russell, ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ is about
two “Little girls from Little Rock” who make their
way to Paris in search of true love, money and
diamonds. Director Howard Hawks (‘His Girl Friday’, ‘The Big Sleep’) entertains with a film that
features Monroe’s unforgettable performance
of “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend”.
The Romans are coming!
Neil Marshall (‘Doomsday’) lets rip with a fullblooded action film set during the Roman invasion of Britain in A.D. 117. Michael Fassbender
(‘Hunger’, ‘Fish Tank’) excels once again as the
sole survivor of a Pictish raid on a Roman frontier fort, who marches north with General Virilus’
(Domninc West, ‘The Wire’) and his legendary
Ninth Legion, to face a brutal foe.

A sumptuous family drama from Italy
A resplendent drama that looks back to the great
works of Italian maestro Luchino Visconti, ‘I Am
Love’ details one wealthy family’s realisation that
modern life has made their world redundant.
Sumptuously shot and featuring an excellent performance by Tilda Swinton, Luca Guadagnino’s
powerful film is a reminder of how great the best
of Italian cinema can be.
Frederick Wiseman’s new masterpiece
A fascinating insight into the Paris Opera
Ballet by America’s greatest living documentary
filmmaker, Frederick Wiseman (‘Titicut Follies’).
Detailing the day-to-day activity of the organisation, from administration, technical support and
classes to the rehearsal and performance of
seven ballets, Wiseman’s engrossing and beautifully shot film shows the demanding routines
placed on all those involved in this art form.

The Wolfman
The Wonder of Burton
As Tim Burton releases his adaptation of ‘Alice in
Wonderland’, Ian Haydn Smith explores the visionary
director’s previous worlds…
W
hether Tim Burton’s films are set
in the past, present or future, in
this world or the next, they are always ‘his’ worlds; a strange mixture
of innocence and menace – fairy tales on the
big screen.
Burton excels at blending the absurd,
surreal or fantastic with the everyday. For
instance, Edward Scissorhands is not the only
strange character in Burton’s 1990 film; his vision of suburbia is no less odd and, ultimately, a
great deal more threatening. Adam and Barbara
14
Maitland (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) may
scare with their ghoulish personas in ‘Beetlejuice’, but the real horror are the out-of-towners,
who threaten the tranquil life – and death – of
the film’s pastoral idyll. Likewise, Batman, Charlie Bucket and Ichabod Crane might all seem
somewhat removed from reality, but that is only
because reality itself is a very peculiar place.
Burton credits his upbringing in
suburbia with his cinematic view of the world:
“There was a subtext of normalcy. I don’t even
know what [suburbia] means, but it’s stuck in
hmvcurzon.com
A Single Man
Shutter Island
my brain. It’s weird… Just a quiet, kind of floaty,
kind of semi-oppressive, blank palette that
you’re living in.”
Living close to Hollywood also nurtured an interest in film; “I don’t know what it
was, maybe the movie theatres in my immediate
surrounding neighbourhood in Burbank, but I
never saw what would be considered A-movies.”
A love of B-movies is one of the major influences on Burton’s work. As he puts it, “There’s
a roughness and a surprising nature to most
B-movies that you don’t get in classic films
– something more immediate. I never chose
those movies to leave impressions in my brain,
they just did.”
A spell as an animator at Disney,
whose outlook contrasted starkly to his own
darker view of the world, finally gave Burton
the jolt he needed to forge his own way in Hollywood. Now, with the success of so many films
behind him, he can ensure his vision reaches
the screen almost entirely intact.
Burton’s originality has attracted an
impressive roster of stars. In particular, there
is his relationship with Johnny Depp. Who plays
the Mad Hatter in their seventh collaboration
and portrays him with all the gusto that Burton
has come to expect from his leading man: “He’s
really willing to take risks that don’t have to do
with image or money. And each time is just
different and better. It’s great to find people
that you can communicate with on an almost
subconscious level.”
It seems only natural that Burton
should turn his attention to Carroll’s fabulous
tale. Those who know his work will see some
familiar themes in ‘Alice in Wonderland’. But in
choosing a mix of live action and animation, the
director is once again pushing himself to find
new ways of bringing his fertile, vivid imagination to the screen. Suffice to say, Alice’s journey
down the rabbit hole this time is likely to be a
very wild trip.
Alice In Wonderland in 3D opens 5 Mar (Tbc) at Wimbledon.

Combining liberty with eastern exoticism, this

Pasha Selim.
Roméo et Juliette
Widely regarded as one of the greatest and
most influential of documentary filmmakers,
Frederick Wiseman’s career stretches back
over forty years. His latest film, ‘La Danse’, a
look at the workings of the Paris Opera Ballet,
highlights the defining aesthetics of his work:
the avoidance of leading characters in favour
of multiple subjects, the absence of narration,
and unobtrusive filming techniques. Jason
Wood spoke with the filmmaker about his film.
Jason Wood: Movement is perhaps the primary motif of
La Danse. Was this your initial impetus to make it?
Frederick Wiseman: It is perhaps repeating a cliché to say
that all movies are based on movement and I am happy to repeat
that cliché. I suppose I would not be interested in movies if I were not
fascinated with all the issues surrounding how to tell a story in movie
terms. The choreography and the skill of the dancers in realising
the ideas of the choreographer are examples of the successful
deployment of movement. The filmmaker has to then find a way of
transmitting the work of the dancers and choreographers in ways
that work on film. This is further complicated by the fact that the
choreography is already an abstraction created from the wish to
express some aspect of human emotion, thought or experience.
JW: What sort of profile did you hope to offer of one of
France’s principal cultural institutions?
FW: I hoped to offer whatever profile I discovered as a
result of spending 12 weeks with the company and 13 months editing.
I did not know what the film would say about the company until the
editing was finished. This is, I believe, true of all my films; I try hard
to avoid imposing preconceived views on the experience.
JW: Has your approach to documentary filmmaking
undergone modifications or refinements?
FW: I like to think I have learned something about filmmaking since I started in 1966, although whether I have or not is not really
for me to evaluate. In each new work I try not to repeat the mistakes
of the previous films to the extent that I am aware of them. Technology
has not really altered my approach because my work has not been influenced by developments in this regard other than the fact that many
of the films were shot in colour because the black and white film stock,
alas, was not sufficiently fast for some low light situations.
La Danse opens 23 Apr at Wimbledon.
