Southeast Asia
declared Polio Free!
Thanks, Rotary!
Schoolchildren participate in a rally organized by Rotary
members in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, India, celebrating the country’s achievement of polio eradication.
The World Health Organization certified on 27 March its 11-country Southeast Asia region has eradicated polio, a
long-awaited declaration given that five years ago India represented nearly half of all polio cases worldwide. The region’s last
wild polio case was reported in West Bengal, India, on 13 January 2011.
“This achievement is an important milestone for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative [GPEI],” said Rotary Foundation Trustee chair Dong Kurn Lee at the WHO’s South-East Asia Regional Certification Commission for Polio Eradication
meeting in New Delhi, India, on 27 March. “We have beaten polio in Southeast Asia, and now we must do the same in the
rest of Asia and Africa.”
The region includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Timor-Leste. Its more than 1.8 billion people represent over 25 percent of the world’s
population.
Densely crowded cities, migrant populations, and poor sanitation posed daunting challenges to eliminating the disease from Southeast Asia.
More than 1,500 Rotary members will be celebrating India’s and the region’s achievement at the Polio Free Conclave
in New Delhi 29-30 March. The event also focused on strengthening the commitment of the GPEI partners to ending polio
globally, including sharing lessons learned in India with other polio-infected countries.
The GPEI’s challenge now is to eradicate polio in the three countries where the disease has never been stopped:
Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nigeria. And recent outbreaks in the Middle East and Horn of Africa are stark reminders that polio
anywhere is a threat everywhere.
“It is India’s responsibility now to share our lessons and best practices with our colleagues in the countries still fighting polio in order to protect their children, and ours as well,” said former Rotary International President Rajendra Saboo. “We
already are doing this, assisting in any way we can… India’s victory over polio and the certification of Southeast Asia occur at
just the right moment to provide a resounding rallying cry for the final push needed to wipe polio from the face of the earth.”
Numerous members of the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen contributed financially to the End Polio
Now Campaign on World Polio Day and had their
photo’s taken and entered into the worlds largest
commercial.

BOHUSLAV RATTAY, MUSIC DIRECTOR
Czech conductor Bohuslav Rattay is a busy ambassador for classical music,
working with orchestras across the globe to produce symphonic works of all kinds
to a diverse audience. The newly appointed music director of the El Paso Symphony Orchestra also serves as music director for the Midland Symphony Orchestra in Michigan and the Lake Charles Symphony Orchestra in Louisiana. As he
gains a reputation as one of the finest young talents of his generation, Mr. Rattay
combines impassioned and virtuosic musicianship with a determination to bring
great music into the lives of all people.
An enthusiastic promoter for classical music, Mr. Rattay strives to bring the traditional and innovative together in a manner exciting and fresh for his audience. He is renowned for his unique concert programs, incorporating special audience
discussions and including multi-media elements. He is also appreciated for his passion for the classics, with special appreciation often given to his insightful understanding of the music of his native Bohemia. Rattay has been praised for his
ability to communicate the depth of a diverse range of music to his audience, for the classics, “Rattay is certainly the man
for Tchaikovsky’s fourth” (Charleston Today, 2011), and for the fashionable, “Maestro Rattay was clearly at home in this
popular style,” (Duluth News Tribune, 2012). His intelligent and vast programming allows him to connect to a broad range
of audience, creating new symphony-goers while entertaining the enthusiasts.
Rattay’s talents and abilities are highly praised. He is internationally acclaimed by critics and audiences alike for his fresh
and inspired musical interpretations. He has received accolades for his “vibrant” performances and his “elegant panache,”
(Charleston City Paper, 2009), his ability to lead the orchestra with his “infectious zest and physicality,” (Midland Daily
News 2013), and his one-of-a-kind artistry, bringing “personal perspective… that will be remembered for many years,”
(Duluth News Tribune, 2012).
His overflowing passion for classical music is highly solicited, recently appearing as guest conductor with the Colorado
Symphony, the Duluth-Superior Symphony, the Hilton Head Symphony, and the Teplice Philharmonic. Other recent engagements include the Virginia Symphony, West Michigan Symphony, Prague’s Dvořák Symphony Orchestra, and the
Charleston (SC) Symphony, where he received several critical accolades. He has also conducted the National Symphony
Orchestra as part of the National Conducting Institute, and was selected by the American Symphony Orchestra League to
participate in its Conducting Fellowship Program.
Believing in the power of education, Mr. Rattay is a committed pedagogue of the younger generations. He has been a music faculty member of the College of William and Mary, Ball State University, and is a frequent guest conductor of All-State
and youth orchestras across the United States. The combination of his youthful energy along with his conducting skills
make him highly valued as an inspirational mentor.
Mr. Rattay holds degrees from the Prague Conservatory, Rice University and the Peabody Institute of Music. He names
Gustav Meier, Larry Rachleff, Benjamin Kamins, and Neeme Jarvi as his most influential teachers.
Bohuslav divides his time between the United States and Europe, always continuing his quest to find new ways to bring
great music into the lives of people on both continents.

FIRST NATIONAL CONVENTION OF THE ROTARY CLUBS of AMERICA
HELD AT THE CONGRESS HOTEL, CHICAGO, ILL. August 15, 16 and 17,1910.
FIRST SESSION, Monday, August 15, 1910.
The Convention was called to order at 10 o’clock a. m., in the Green Room of the Congress Hotel, by
Mr. Paul P. Harris, Chairman of the National Board of Commissioners, Mr. Chesley R. Perry, Secretary of the National Board of Commissioners, acting as Secretary. Paul Harris’ first words to the first
Rotary International Convention follows:
Chairman Harris. “Delegates from North, South, East and West, delegates from all parts of the
United States: We have been called here to organize a national association of Rotary Clubs,
and we have a great deal of business to transact. It will not be an occasion of long addresses.
We of the Chicago club do not believe very much in oratory. We believe that an orator is a man
who intoxicates himself with his own emotions and is likely to say a great many things he had
not intended to say.
This is going to be a convention in which we will get down to business and endeavor to
launch the National Association of Rotary Clubs. We need the best thought and co‑operation
of every single man who is here. We are going to try and have a good time as we go along,
that is, we are going to intersperse enough good time so that you will not remember it as a sad
occasion; but nevertheless, the primary purpose of this convention is to transact business.
We hope you have had a chance to reflect upon the prospective business and that every man
who comes here as a delegate comes with some mature thought on this subject.”
